Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I always thought the madness was in the tilt of the head. Anyone can look mad when glaring from under their eyebrows.

[–]Hannarchist 2 points3 points ago

What film is the third still down on the right hand side from?

[–]dukentre 3 points4 points ago

Psycho

Warning: Tv Tropes link

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here

[–]TheSoleWitness 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, if you have very important things to do, please avoid this link.

It's more like a gateway drug than it is a curiosity quencher.

[–]firefae83 0 points1 point ago

cool, didn't know it had a name, thanks :)

[–]specialk16 -1 points0 points ago

I'm not tall enough to pull this off. Fuck.

[–]slow56k 0 points1 point ago

Wait... shouldn't it be easier if you're short?

[–]experts_never_lie[!] 1 point2 points ago

Bowed head of submission, alert eyes not submitting at all -- the body language screams duplicitousness or rebellion.

[–]e5x 95 points96 points ago

Malcom McDowell as Alex in A Clockwork Orange

Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight

Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden in Fight Club

[–]SrsSteel 45 points46 points ago

I am horribly jealous of Brad Pitts looks.

[–]rasputine 29 points30 points ago

If someone convinced me that drinking the blood of living virgin polar bears in the wild would grant me his looks, I would seriously consider purchasing a bear-suit and airplane.

[–]sicsemperTrex 9 points10 points ago

Coming soon to a theater near you...

[–]Ragss 2 points3 points ago

I like it because the bear-suit is foreshadowing.

[–]Runefist_Smashgrab 2 points3 points ago

I can grant you this wish of looking like Brad Pitt. However, a side affect will be that you have explosive diarrhea at 2AM every morning. You do not wake up until halfway through.

I will accept applications by way of courier Velociraptor, to my secret hideout in Olympus Mons.

[–]opfgt 4 points5 points ago

WHERE IS THIS PLACE? I CANNOT FIND IT ON GOOGLE MAPS

[–]HippieWizard 1 point2 points ago

Asleep by 2 am? Um i go to sleep at about 3 every night. Doesn't everyone on reddit?

Why is this even a question?! Take my money now!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

Haven't seen A Clockwork Orange. Is it as good as the other two?

[–]PapauNewGuinea 59 points60 points ago

Clockwork Orange is exceptional. One of the best movie adaptations around.

By best movie adaptation, I don't mean most accurate to the book, I just mean well done.

[–]Master_Of_Penguins 14 points15 points ago

It lacked the ending of the book however.

[–]PapauNewGuinea 18 points19 points ago

Yeah. I didn't mean to imply it was the best in terms of accuracy to the book, I just meant in that it was well done.

sidenote: Wasn't the final chapter omitted in some versions?

There's an interesting bit on Wikipedia about Burgess's thoughts on the film. Also about his relationship with Kubrick

Anthony Burgess had mixed feelings about the cinema version of his novel, publicly saying he loved Malcolm McDowell and Michael Bates, and the use of music; he praised it as "brilliant", even so brilliant that it might be dangerous. Despite this enthusiasm, he was concerned that it lacked the novel's redemptive final chapter, an absence he blamed upon his American publisher (this chapter being omitted in all US editions of the novel prior to 1986) and not Kubrick.

Burgess reports in his autobiography You've Had Your Time (1990) that he and Kubrick at first enjoyed a good relationship, each holding similar philosophical and political views and each very interested in literature, cinema, music and Napoleon Bonaparte. Burgess's 1974 novel Napoleon Symphony was dedicated to Kubrick. Their relationship soured, however, when Kubrick left Burgess to defend the film from accusations of glorifying violence. A (lapsed) Catholic, Burgess tried many times to explain the Christian moral points of the story to outraged Christian organizations and to defend it against newspaper accusations that it supported fascist dogma. He also went to receive awards given to Kubrick on his behalf.

Burgess was deeply hurt, feeling that Kubrick had used him as a film publicity pawn. Malcolm McDowell, on publicity tour with Burgess, shared his feelings, and, at times, spoke harshly about Kubrick. As evidence, both novelist and actor cited Kubrick's uncontrolled ego manifest in the film credits: the only author credited is "Kubrick". Later, Burgess spoofed Kubrick's image, firstly in the musical version of A Clockwork Orange, where a Kubrick-like character is beaten; then in The Clockwork Testament (1974) novel, where the poet F.X. Enderby is attacked for "glorifying" violence in a film adaptation; and, in 1980, as the crafty director Sidney Labrick in the novel Earthly Powers.[citation needed]

[–]Lindsay1987 4 points5 points ago

The 21st chapter was only released in the British version. So for quite awhile, the US only had the version where Alex kills himself, and there is no happy ending. I know quite a few people who read the American version without the 21st chapter and thought it was still a good book, and then read the "added" chapter and thought it ruined the book. I only read the full version and thought it was extremely relevant to the story, as it shows that Alex would have eventually outgrown his "childish" (violent) ways on his own, without the state intervening. Also, this is my favorite book.

[–]thisguyinc 2 points3 points ago

And the last chapter is very important! It reinforces Alex's coming-of-age.

The movie left me feeling like Alex "beat the system."

[–]Croatian_Sheepdog 2 points3 points ago

no love for a quick in and out with the old Ludwig van?

[–]jpellett251 0 points1 point ago

I read that it was the production company that made Kubrick give it the more happy ending. Disappointing, whoever is at fault.

Edit: now I think I'm mixing it up and that the book had a happier, redemptive ending, but I don't remember. It's been many years since I read it or saw it.

[–]JammaPants -1 points0 points ago

The movie had a very redemptive ending. The book, in its original form, had spoiler the main character relapse back into his old ways, sort of.end spoiler It's been a while. Anyways, it also happens that some versions of the book left out the original chapter and just ended after Alex wakes up in the hospital.

[–]jpellett251 0 points1 point ago

Oh, that's right, though now I remember that's the opposite of what happened. The original version had a redemptive ending where he realized the error of his ways. The movie was based on the version published in American that left out the redemptive chapter. I only ever read the incomplete American version.

Edit: should have looked it up to begin with. Wikipedia confirms this account.

[–]Dead_NOTsleeping 0 points1 point ago

Can you please explain the fuck out of that movie? I didn't understand it at all. x.x

[–]stillnotking 8 points9 points ago

Let's put it this way: Alex makes Tyler Durden and the Joker look kindly and well-adjusted.

If you have issues watching rape or extreme violence portrayed realistically (rather than cartoonishly, as is the norm in many modern films), I'd stay away. But it is an exceptional movie, as all Kubrick's movies are.

[–]D-Speak 5 points6 points ago

It's a fucking dark movie, mostly because of Malcom McDowell's Alex. He's one of the greatest cinematic and literary characters around. I strongly recommend the film. Just don't ever plan on listening to "Singin' in the Rain" with positive feelings afterwards.

[–]e5x 3 points4 points ago

I've never seen it, but the book is really good and the movie is directed by Stanley Kubrick, so I would imagine the movie is really good as well.

[–]Philthese93 0 points1 point ago

Netflix was streaming it :( Got to go buy it on blu-ray now.

[–]luciddr34m3r 3 points4 points ago

The movie made me uncomfortable. I hesitate to recommend any movie to someone that has multiple rapes on screen.

That being said, it was a good movie. Just... be prepared...

[–]digdugsmug 1 point2 points ago

It might be my favorite of the 3 but its a super tough call. They are all kinda different genre's.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

just for balance, i watched it as was underwhelmed. if i'd seen it cold i may have enjoyed it, but the build-up was big and i felt let down.

[–]monkeedude1212 0 points1 point ago

It's of a different era of movies, and it's kubrick, so it might seem... well. Comparatively speaking, let me put it this way: TDK is probably one of the blockbusters that will survive our times. A Clockwork Orange is a "cult classic" that will live a long time. Fight club is like a popular "cult classic" that balances the blockbustery feeling of a movie with the underground themes of cult movies. I think to some degree Fight Club is to Brad Pitt as TDK is to Heath Ledger.

So, if you don't mind progressing down that path, definitely check it out.

[–]digdugsmug 0 points1 point ago

also as ACO is to Malcolm McDowell..

[–]iamthatoneguy -3 points-2 points ago

Thank you Captain Obvious!

[–]JackalKing 6 points7 points ago

Why no Patrick Bateman? :(

Ultra-serious club

[–]eifersucht12a 20 points21 points ago

Somebody pointed this out the first time I saw it posted; this image makes a great sliding scale from left to right of Chaotic, Neutral and Lawful evil.

One just likes to fuck things up, one likes to watch things naturally fuck up (setting it in motion, but letting things play out e.g. threatening to bomb a hospital setting off a citywide manhunt, the ferries with bombs, etc. everything he does simply exploits human nature), one seeks to improve society by fucking things up.

[–]Flamingmonkey923 16 points17 points ago

Tyler Durden is definitely chaotic good. He has absolutely no rules, but still works for the good of society. It's the entire basis of the "good guy Tyler Durden" meme.

He threatens to kill a cashier to motivate him to go back to veterinary school, for fuck's sake.

[–]no_egrets 7 points8 points ago

And Nolan's Joker is most certainly chaotic evil. He has total disregard for human life and law, and his purpose is to upset order and demonstrate that goodness is artificial.

See, their morals, their code... it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you, when the chips are down, these... these civilized people will eat each other. See, I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve.

[–]Flamingmonkey923 5 points6 points ago

Agreed. I actually think the three shown can be put on a Chaotic slider, not an Evil one.

Tyler: Chaotic Good Alex: Chaotic Neutral Joker: Chaotic Evil

Tyler goes out of his way to make the world a better place. The Joker goes out of his way to watch humanity suffer. Alex just kind of does things out of self interest and self preservation.

[–]no_egrets 1 point2 points ago

FYI, if you put two spaces at the end of a line, it will make a clean line break.

Like
so.

The reddit markdown ignores single linebreaks without a double-space.

[–]specialk16 1 point2 points ago

Gotta rewatch the movie in preparation for The Dark Knight Rises!

[–]trisgeminus 1 point2 points ago

He's chaotic neutral at best. His "you can't make an omlette without breaking a few eggs" attitude disqualifies him from good. He seems to genuinely enjoy breaking those eggs.

[–]PERKocet_1 0 points1 point ago

What do you mean "has no rules"? The first RULE of Fight Club/Project Mayhem is.... Are these not his rules?

[–]Flamingmonkey923 1 point2 points ago

He's completely chaotic. He rejects every rule of society on principle. In that rejection, he invents his own set of rules. Then he breaks those rules.

He talks about Fight Club with Bob. He beats the shit out of blondie after the guy taps out. He asks questions about Project Mayhem. He makes excuses and lies. He certainly doesn't trust Tyler Durden.

[–]PERKocet_1 0 points1 point ago

I think at that point Tyler Durden was considered a different person, no?

But I now see what you mean.

[–]dogsarentedible 3 points4 points ago

Alex's smile sends a chill down my spine.

You probably would get more appreciation over at /r/movies

Does anyone want to be my best friend for life and do this for me in 1920 x 1080. I would be ever so grateful

[–]Jabberwockey 0 points1 point ago

I was re-watching "12 Monkeys" recently and Pitt looked a lot more deranged in there. I don't know how he did it, but his eyes were not on the same level and that made him look incredibly insane.

[–]GodOfCookies 0 points1 point ago

Heath Ledger was an incredible actor, leaving us with one of the greatest roles in a movie: The Joker.

[–]MonteRunTheCity 0 points1 point ago

someone needs to turn this into a hi res wallpaper

[–]x4n7 0 points1 point ago

The look is called Sanpaku, it translates to three whites since you can see white on both sides of the pupil as well as below it. It supposedly means that you are disturbed. JFK got a case of it right before he was shot. dun dun duuuun

I like this picture, but I feel like Durden is not on the same level as Alex and Mr. J.

[–]Capn_Crotch 2 points3 points ago

I disagree completely good sir. Durden has ambitions that rival the jokers and far surpass those of Alex.

[–]shawtywtits 2 points3 points ago

Yes, but he lacks the vicious sadism they both display.

[–]krawm 1 point2 points ago

but he is a character born of madness, his very essence is insanity. And i think you can call him a sadist, while tyler durden used violence to teach he did enjoy the act of violence, that makes him a sadist.

[–]shawtywtits 0 points1 point ago

he did use it to teach, but it didn't seem to me like he did violence for the sake of violence like the other two characters. of course, I haven't watched Fight Club in a long time. Maybe I should.

[–]Capn_Crotch 0 points1 point ago

I think the Joker didn't do violence for the sake of violence... but either way, yes. Please watch Fight Club again. It's just good.

[–]KingRat12 3 points4 points ago

Doesn't mean he wasn't crazy.

[–]Capn_Crotch 5 points6 points ago

So was Tyler Durden.
