Made even cooler by the fact that he snuck a diagram of the human Brain into the ceiling of the Sistine Chappell, right under the nose of the catholic leadership, in a time when teaching and learning about the working of the human body was still a pretty big taboo.

[–]ColdWeatherKarl 52 points53 points ago

QI fan I see?

[–]DrAwesomeClaws 21 points22 points ago

I love QI but haven't seen most episodes (feel free to be jealous at the fact that I know how great the show is but still haven't experienced most of it).

Do you know what particular episode that was? I'd love to watch it.

Arguably the greatest British quiz/factual/comedy show starring comedian Alan Davies and national treasure Steven Fry. The show revolves around interesting facts and little known tropes, starring (usually British) comedians etc. You really should check it out.

[–]puddingfarts 7 points8 points ago

Some of my favorite regulars (in no order, not a full list):

Bill Bailey

Phil Jupitus

Sean Lock

Rich Hall (actually American)

Jimmy Carr (usually pretty blue, a bit tame in this show)

Jo Brand

David Mitchell

Dara O'Briain

Andy Hamilton

Hope that gives you an idea of the type of fun had on the show. If you've been on reddit for any extended amount of time, you've probably seen a few references to QI here or there.

Also: Put smarties tubes on cats legs, make them walk like a robot

[–]Sojoez 7 points8 points ago

You forgot the episode with Brian Cox.

[–]Deathworm-Jim 7 points8 points ago

Brian Cox needs more recognition on Reddit.

Ex-Rockstar that understands the universe and explains it simply using a rock and a pile of sand on a random beach.

[–]CompanionNoob 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget the seductive way his says "millions and millions of stars"

[–]lpottsy 0 points1 point ago

There is much love for the cox here on reddit. Have you tried /r/briancox?

[–]Deathworm-Jim 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for bringing me to this magical place full of Cox!

[–]LaughingMan9 2 points3 points ago

I think you named pretty much everyone. With the exception of the special guests that almost always win.

[–]nakp88d 6 points7 points ago

How could you possibly forget Sandi Toksvig.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

Because she's not particularly funny.

[–]dudefrommongolia 3 points4 points ago

She's been really good in the recent episodes.

[–]Frankeh 2 points3 points ago

Women comedians do nothing for me. There's even a QI episode that goes into why they don't.

[–]ajpos 1 point2 points ago

I'm watching the show on Youtube, love it. What is the difference between series d, e, etc. and "seasons" ?

In addition to that the question/answer being right there for other redditors:

a)makes life easy for other redditors with the same question

b)encourages other redditors to ask questions that they feel might be stupid (but often never are)

[–]ApeWithACellphone 1 point2 points ago

There's an article on cracked about it. That's my guess.

[–]helmvisit 1 point2 points ago

Or, ya know, knowledge of the work of art. Clearly what Mickey meant.

[–]proxypanda 2 points3 points ago

Oh yeah, Because only a person who watches QI would know something like that... -_- (smh)

[–]ColdWeatherKarl 0 points1 point ago

Well, to know the fact is one thing. To recite the fact using only information used in the show is another thing.

[–]matebeatscoffee 5 points6 points ago

Talk about street art as a form of protest!

Edit: Semantics.

[–]nickyjames 2 points3 points ago

What forms are we protesting!?

[–]Edgar4llanPwn 16 points17 points ago

W2 forms kind of piss me off. We should protest those

[–]matebeatscoffee 1 point2 points ago

Haha, I like your kind of correction method. Upvote!

[–]Sinnagirl 7 points8 points ago

Many of the artists of his time, including Da vinci, performed autopsies and cadaver dissections to better understand the human form. This is part of the reason why Renaissance art shows such a huge improvement in the rendering of human form compared to work produced in the 1200s and 1300s. The practice of cadaver dissections continues today with anatomy labs being part of the standard curriculum of University level Fine Art programs.

"Further, below the right arm of God, the painting shows a sad angel in an area of the brain that is sometimes activated on PET scans when someone experiences a sad thought"

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Creation_of_Adam#section_2

Holy. Fuck

[–]SpinozaDreams 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, that's bullshit. How the hell would Michelangelo even know about that?

[–]whyso 0 points1 point ago

Maybe he did live testing?

[–]uncivlengr 2 points3 points ago

That's reaching a bit much - none of the angels are particularly happy looking.

[–]RPrevolution 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but it sounds good

[–]MrJMaxted0291 3 points4 points ago

I remember reading an interesting theory that this was actually his way of arguing that man created god, not the other way.

[–]nxtnguyenJungle love 2 points3 points ago

Michelangelo was kind of an atheist. He snuck the diagram of a human brain in to represent his argument that God only exists in the human mind.

[–]Imperceptus 4 points5 points ago

The current prefecture of the Papal Household had a different explanation. Just saying. The Church had some of the highest educated individuals in all fields working for them....one does not simply sneak a human brain into the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Edit: S's

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

We are talking about one of the most prolific and talented artists of all time.

[–]Sammzor 0 points1 point ago

Diagram of the human brain.

[–]iamatfuckingwork 0 points1 point ago

Systematically destroying all of society's taboos!

[–]Will_shred 0 points1 point ago

I think not only that, but placing god inside a diagram of the human brain is an almost atheistic statement. Saying that god only resides in the human mind.

[–]makehisCH32COandBa 87 points88 points ago

The cerebellum is reaching a little... can we all agree on that?

[–]imakemisteaks 13 points14 points ago

I thought so too but then I saw that the left side curve is just under the hem of God's robe.

[–]makehisCH32COandBa 12 points13 points ago

I don't deny that it lines up practically everywhere else...

[–]Mattsinger 3 points4 points ago

Of course it all lines up, he drew it to match. I dont think that yellow brain was also drawn in 1511. I also see i'm not the only one that realizes this is at least a bit coincidental. I could argue the Flying Spaghetti Monster too resembles a brain, as does almost any oval. Since a lot of neurological study and advancement didn't occur until the mid 16th and 17th century, there is no way they could've known about synaptic clefts, or which part of the brain controls emotions emotions and creativity as the Wikipedia page suggests. After all, since when does a brain and religion go together.

[–]jsmayne 10 points11 points ago

god is all in your head

[–]randomletters92 0 points1 point ago

The optic chiasm is definitely in the wrong place.

[–]sprwlf -1 points0 points ago

How do we know this is an accurate portrayal of a brain though?

[–]austro-american 3 points4 points ago

Well the prefrontal cortex is Really reaching.

[–]lucid808 8 points9 points ago

If anything, the cerebellum should be where they try to extend the occipital lobe, not so far down (should be near where the flap folds in the back, on the far right side, to be correct). Also, the pituitary gland is way too far down...that's the major flaw in this. It's actually near the middle of the brain, not on the bottom. I've seen this diagram before, and it is pretty remarkable how close he got to the anatomy of the brain elsewhere...but I'm not convinced it was intentional by Michelangelo and not just people's imaginations wanting this to represent the brain.

[–]helmvisit 6 points7 points ago

To me, it seems like far too many consistencies to be a coincidence. The shape of the brain, the fat of the angels reflecting grey matter in the brain, the fact that it was painted in the time when anatomy was burgeoning and cutting-edge.

This guy was probably going off of second-hand info of what a brain looked like. While there were probably people at the Church who knew what he was up to, if it became common knowledge they probably would've made an example out of him. Working with what he had and under the scrutiny while considering the context of the situation, there's no way this is my imagination.

Edit: links. The Creation of Adam/Anatomical Theories wiki.

[–]Hermeias 1 point2 points ago

He is eluding to the spark of consciousness! The link between our brain and the outer world, a yet undefined process.

[–]RE90 0 points1 point ago

The whole idea is reaching a little (pun not exactly intended). Wouldn't be surprised if this was found via an email from someone's mom.

[–]Frankeh 0 points1 point ago

Yes.

[–]HardModeEnabled -2 points-1 points ago

Yes, and I'd never really noticed it before. Given that everything else is pretty perfectly placed, it makes me think this is intentional.

It almost looks as though the back of the brain is being blown out.

[–]maroonlife 39 points40 points ago

It this a certified "woah" or just a cool coincidence?

[–]CorneliusJack 73 points74 points ago

He is pretty famous for sneaking in hidden meanings in his works. He even drew "an entrance to hell" behind the pope's seat. He did it because they forced him to drew the Sistine chapel (in fresco no less, very difficult material to work with, and Michelangelo was working on sculpting the David, his passion was sculpture, drawing was more of a secondary thing to him, the pope strong armed him into working on the chapel)

[–]Sinnagirl 12 points13 points ago

He also painted his own face into one of the people in hell in "the Last Judgement" the name for the work you are referencing. The section of the fresco is called "St Bartholomew holds his own skin".

http://www.italian-renaissance-art.com/Last-Judgement.html

[–]Cloud7654 6 points7 points ago

The most cringeworthy part of that work definitely has to be the snake biting that dude's dick. What the hell, Michaelangelo?

[–]word5auce 4 points5 points ago

The guy behind him is way more shocked than he is too.

[–]tan_and_bones 0 points1 point ago

Maybe a reference to Dante's Inferno, Canto 25.

[–]Sinnagirl 0 points1 point ago

Michelangelo was gay. Gay in a time when the Roman Catholic church had phenomenal power. He is known to have felt guilt and shame about his sexuality. It has been speculated this is an expression of his own shame and confusion. Michaelangelo is among the most unusual artists of his time, in history really, which is saying a lot as famous artists are an eccentric bunch. He was full of self-loathing. Although he lived to be over 90 and created the dome of St Peter's during the last years of his life, he lived a very difficult life.

[–]whyso 0 points1 point ago

He was gay? Really?

[–]Sinnagirl 1 point2 points ago

Yes. As were Donetello and Da Vinci.

[–]whyso 0 points1 point ago

Not that surprised, but how do you know?

[–]Sinnagirl 1 point2 points ago

I have studied art history. If you google it I am sure you will find reliable sources. My text books were not online.

[–]Twentyfists 3 points4 points ago

From that site:

Baigio da Cesena, a papal master of ceremonies, criticized Michelangelo's work saying that nude figures had no place in such a sacred place, and that the paintings would be more at home in a public tavern.

Michelangelo included da Cesena in the Last Judgement as Minos, one of the three judges of the underworld. When Baigio complained to the Pope the pontiff explained that he had no jurisdiction over hell and that the portrait would have to remain.

Boss.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

And his sculptures are even more amazing than his work on the Sistine Chapel. His Moses sculpture is just O_O

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c1/Moses_San_Pietro_in_Vincoli.jpg

That is the pinnacle of realism in sculpture. It never gets old.

[–]tuckelsWoah or whoa? 1 point2 points ago

The horns on the statue are particularly interesting. It was apparently common at the time to depict Moses with horns due to a mistranslation of a word meaning radiant as a word meaning horned.

[–]violaceous 0 points1 point ago

His beard looks... luscious.

[–]RGT42Space is deep 37 points38 points ago

[–]BerserkOlaf 3 points4 points ago

Meshberger also argues that there appears to be communication present despite the gap between the depicted Adam and God, just as neurons transmit biochemical information across synaptic clefts. Further, below the right arm of God, the painting shows a sad angel in an area of the brain that is sometimes activated on PET scans when someone experiences a sad thought. God is superimposed over the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain and possibly the anatomical counterpart of the human soul. God's right arm extends to the prefrontal cortex, the most creative and most uniquely human region of the brain.

there's no way Michalangelo knew that though

Alternatively, it has been observed that the red cloth around God has the shape of a human uterus (one art historian has called it a "uterine mantle"[6]), and that the scarf hanging out, coloured green, could be a newly cut umbilical cord.

if this isn't it, occam's razor would at least say that this is a better explanation than 'brain'

[–]redtheda 2 points3 points ago

There's no reason why it couldn't be both a brain and a uterus. It's possible to have multiple layers of meaning.

[–]OatSquares 0 points1 point ago

sure. but it's highly unlikely.

[–]maroonlife 1 point2 points ago

An Upvote for your time.

[–]Magzter 5 points6 points ago

I believe Michelangelo also used to dig up corpses and dissect the brains out of morbid curiosity. There's a chance that the metaphor behind this work is that underneath all the naked chicks we think about where our deep thoughts lie i.e. our questions about life (God) is something that feels so real that it almost touches us.

Or something else, I don't know I'm just trying to sound philosophical.

[–]VoteLobster 14 points15 points ago

I gotta ask...why does Adam have such a small penis?

[–]28_06_42_12 39 points40 points ago

God made him a grower, not a shower.

[–]gbot26 4 points5 points ago

Adam was more of a 'bath' guy.

[–]28_06_42_12 6 points7 points ago

Isn't the english language fun?

[–]goldensylvan 21 points22 points ago

Even if your comment was intended as joke I'll answer. Renaissance art imitated the styles of ancient greek art. As far as I've read the depiction of large genitals in greek art was thought be obscene or aesthetically distracting.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Or even average genitals. The Greeks always understated genitals when it came to art. So you're correct, sir.

[–]electricmice 0 points1 point ago

basically this is what all white historians gotta say because they are embarrassed. that's just what dick looks like when it's sitting in a cold studio. i saw a show on the discovery channel once where the historian was ask that question and he said he didn't know why they did that and laughed nervously.

[–]Ceejae 1 point2 points ago

Penis size being important for ones masculinity is entirely a cultural thing. It is not universal. It was likely a non-issue when this was painted.

[–]WarmTaffy 3 points4 points ago

I think it's pretty fly. I mean, for a white guy.

[–]CricketPinata 0 points1 point ago

It was seen as more ideal and better looking than a very large penis in art of the period.

[–]thechapattack 0 points1 point ago

[–]Ugbrog 8 points9 points ago

[–]Spike69Shroom initiate 20 points21 points ago

Hidden meaning? [God is in our mind, our creativity... idk (4)]

[–]Edgar4llanPwn 22 points23 points ago

I see it as a depiction of the beginning of humanity. God's great gift of the mind, providing the spark of intelligence that we would use to inhabit the earth. God reaches out to Man, and endows him with His own image.

[–]ProdigalSheep 20 points21 points ago

Yeah...or...he's saying God is a figment of your imagination, which I think is much more likely.

[–]Edgar4llanPwn 10 points11 points ago

The painting is titled: The Creation of Adam

[My interpretation] is message consistent with thoughts he expressed in his sonnets. Supreme in sculpture and painting, he understood that his skill was in his brain and not in his hands. He believed that the "divine part" we "receive" from God is the "intellect". In the following sonnet, Michelangelo explains how he creates sculpture and painting and how, I believe, God himself gave man the gift of intellect.

After the divine part has well
conceived
Man's face and gesture, soon both
mind and hand,
With a cheap model, first, at their
command,
Give life to stone, but this is not
achieved
By skill. In painting, too, this is
perceived:
Only after the intellect has planned
The best and highest, can the ready
hand
Take up the brush and try all things
received.

http://www.wellcorps.com/Explaining-The-Hidden-Meaning-Of-Michelangelos-Creation-of-Adam.html

It matters not what you think is likely. What matters is the message that Michelangelo wished to portray. The thoughts that inspired the movement of his hands.

[–]biirdmaan 2 points3 points ago

It matters not what you think is likely. What matters is the message that Michelangelo wished to portray. The thoughts that inspired the movement of his hands.

that's not how it works. I don't care what he intended it to mean. What I take away from his work is more important to me than what he took away from his own work. Same deal with movies, books, tv shows, games, etc.

[–]Edgar4llanPwn 17 points18 points ago

Sorry if I sound like an asshole, and I apologize for stepping on the beliefs. I believe that there are correct and incorrect interpretations of art and literature. ProdigalSheep gathered that Michelangelo was dismissing God as a figment of imagination because God's image was superimposed over an image of the human brain.

Now, I'm not attacking anyone for their beliefs, nor am I arguing for the existence of a God. Michelangelo created this with a purpose and ProdigalSheep has projected his belief onto this work of art.

Yeah...or...he's saying God is a figment of your imagination, which I think is much more likely.

This is absurd for a number of reasons

  • Michelangelo was a spiritual man who believed in a deity.

  • This piece is titled The Creation of Adam

  • It is painted on the Sistine chapel.

Regardless of your personal beliefs. There is a right way and a wrong way to analyze a work of art

[–]sytar6 6 points7 points ago

I have decided that this was Michelangelo's way of saying that he was a zombie that wanted to eat brains because God made him that way. Obviously my analysis has just as much validity as yours because who cares what the guy originally meant amirite?

[–]vdgmrpro 0 points1 point ago

This is most definitely what he was going for.

[–]ChillyWillster -1 points0 points ago

The only interpretation that matters is your own, silly! :)

[–]cbravom 7 points8 points ago

Yeah...or...he's saying God is a figment of your imagination, which I think is much more likely.

They were talking about Michelangelo's interpretation.

[–]derphighbury 1 point2 points ago

Haven't read much about it, but it could maybe be something about the 'third eye' or the pineal gland which is in the centre of the brain. Once the gland is activated it releases some gland-juice that makes the person in a state of trance. (Attained by meditating or under HOLY-MOTHER-OF-FUCK sort of stressful moments.) Many religious people call that state of trance to be like 'being in the presence of god' or 'nirvana'.

Again, just writing what I THINK I read a long time ago.

[–]Edgar4llanPwn 1 point2 points ago

reddiquette

Please don't:

Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote.

[–]Raneados 0 points1 point ago

If it were something generic, like a meme or something, then yes, I'd agree with you, but the closeness of the entries compared to how few times they NORMALLY get posted and the uniqueness of the entry means that someone saw the entry yesterday, and decided to throw it down again today.

And balls to the reddiquette in this case, it's already been established time and again that the votes mean very little, and they do nothing to bring attention or inform, they're just a +/-1 with no context, and even less than that because there are system set in place to automatically give them depending on the entry's popularity/standing/subreddit/etc

[–]Cubix__Woah or whoa? 1 point2 points ago

A comment on how it is our brains that give rise to our consciousness, and not a divine creator?

Or is it a play on God being in our minds and not real?

Or is it trying to say that God is inside us?
