There was a 20minute North Face documentary about this. It was great. Anyone have the full link?

Got it:

Part 1

Part 2

Shit will make your palms sweat.

[–]ibejammin 2 points3 points ago

This part threw me over the edge. No pun intended.

Freaking unreal.

It's like my hands are itching from inside.

Every time I see Honnold make a crazy free solo like this, I'm amazed that he's still alive. 99.999999% of people would die trying something like this. And he does his crazy climbs one after the other, and never makes any mistakes.

[–]alphabets00p 2 points3 points ago

never makes any mistakes.

It only takes one. But yeah, mothafucka has some serious skills.

[–]vedder10 2 points3 points ago

He makes mistakes, just not big ones. He's amazing no question, just the fact that he genuinely believes that he is under control and his brain does not compute fear is incredible. All in all this is a really stupid sport, Dan Osman being a prime example moron.

In the video from North Face, that is linked below, there is a part in which he has a bit of an anxiety attack. He collects himself, but I would not say that he absolutely devoid of fear.

[–]vedder10 -2 points-1 points ago

Ok you are right, he's just stupid and has a death wish.

[–]cock-a-doodle-doo 1 point2 points ago

His climbs are incredibly calculated and well within his ability. 'Stupid' is a poor term to use. To suggest he has a death wish is to completely misunderstand the psychology of deep play.

[–]JSteigs 0 points1 point ago

All I was saying is that he is human too. He may be able to do something that not all of us can, but that doesn't mean that he is without emotion. He is capable of emotion as well, and that even the best of struggle. I know it sounds plenty cheesy, but making out to be gods among men, is just over simplifying the situation.

So, ever since subscribing to /r/AdrenalinePorn, I've seen these pictures of peps all climbing giant stuff with no ropes. How often does it happen that said peeps fall from said giant stuff? It just seems like it would happen more regularly than you'd think. Free climbing can't be easy.

[–]helvete1337 9 points10 points ago

Free climbing is also with a rope. This here is actually called free soloing. Freeclimbing just means, you climb a route without pausing and hanging in the rope.

[–]ValiumAndCaesarSalad 1 point2 points ago

Ahhh word. Thanks for the knowledge. Free soloing. Hmm.

[–]helvete1337 0 points1 point ago

I think I would never have the heart to do that. Even with a rope it is often scary enough.

John Bachar and Derek Hersey, have been killed this way

[–]Narf-a-licious 2 points3 points ago

There really are not as many people as you think who are nuts enough to try anything excessively dangerous. You will see many pictures of routes or ventures that show someone free soloing; but in reality they are running something more like bouldering (climbing without ropes/harness but are only a couple tens of feet high often times). Pictures can be taken from an angle to make you believe it is far more dangerous than it is.

That said, of those who actually do free solo climbing, death is (I would argue) more uncommon than you are likely to expect. This has to do with the fact that the routes free solo climbers usually run are the ones that they are incredibly familiar with and/or are not particularly difficult for their skill level. There are two very notable and incredible climbers who have indeed died during climbs however; John Bachar and Derek Hersey (I highly recommend watching parts 1-3 of Dereks documentary). Other than that, climbers that die from Free Soloing who are not big names don't hit the papers as having died specifically from Free Soloing so it's hard to say just how common it really is.

Here (4:34) is a pretty nifty montage of well known free solo climbers you might find interesting.

Aww man, thanks for such a thorough response Narf! I'll definitely check out the Hersey stuff. I was big into climbing when I was, like, 16. I'd love to get back into it again.

[–]Narf-a-licious 0 points1 point ago

no problem. If you earnestly want to get into it again usually the best way is to find a local group. I've personally used meetup.com several times for things like Parkour groups, Ultimate Frisbee groups etc. However meetup.com isn't much help if you live in rural areas. Craigslist would be a second bet for finding people to go with.

I've known some colleges (Community and State colleges both) that have gyms or classes (or both) you can jump into.

Good luck and I sincerely hope you find a place to get back into climbing :)

Signed, Internet Stranger.

This is insanity. Alex Honald, while totally baller at climbing, is a complete idiot... but, thats just like, my opinion man..

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

yeah, these guys dont live long, and the next one thinks they'll break the mold

[–]vedder10 -1 points0 points ago

It's only a matter of time

[–]WalterJrsBreakfast 2 points3 points ago

Seriously. I wish my work was even half as good as Jimmy Chin's stuff.

[–]Psilocyn 1 point2 points ago

Thantos

[–]jacktors 1 point2 points ago

does he wear a diaper? What if he gets a case of the squirts?

[–]soxandpatriots1 0 points1 point ago

Wow thats crazy. I don't know if I could ever do that, even if I was supremely confident in my abilities.

[–]ivorywake 0 points1 point ago

Watch a documentary on this guy, your palms will be sweatier than during any action or horror movie.
