Way to go dude... I was in a class last semester and the prof. was going on some rant about how young people don't save enough/think about their future. He asked a few questions and then asked, "Just wondering... who has $1000 or more in their checking account right now" I looked down and frowned as about half the class raised their hands... I had $3.00 or so in there that day, but the internship I was working at the time turned in to a paying position... plus I knew those kids only had that much money because their parents gave it to them... i'd rather have a humble amount of money that I earned myself by working than a boatload that was just given to me from my parents. I'm 23 for fuck's sake.

Same, I feel shitty asking my parents for money, sucks when you lose your job, but they borrowed from me when I had a job so I feel less bad.

In other news, anyone in Florida in Volusia County know of any jobs? Just saying.

[–]not_AIDS 5 points6 points ago

I lost my job 2 months ago and I'm down to $60... Paid all my bills for last month and then my cc info got stolen so my bank account is frozen and now I can't even get to what little money I have left. Been looking for a new job non stop. I do stand up comedy for money, used to do it for fun but when I lost my job I got the balls to start hosting my own shows and getting paid. I only get paid a little bit a show but with me losing my job came something good out of it.

Grats man, it's a good feeling.

Goddamit. I was going to post that. You beat me to it this time.

[–]turbo_tC 2 points3 points ago

I'm 21 and I finally have $1000 in a savings account. I was only able to save about $100 a month consistently but now I'm getting a roommate so I'll be able to save an extra $300 a month. Then once my car is paid off in two months I'll be able to save an extra $200 a month. It's all going straight into savings. I've been unemployed before and got to the point where I literally had $0.00 in my account and I think building up a safety net is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Congrats on the job and good luck!

You're okay.

[–]Vicky_PC_Gamer 1 point2 points ago

My friend has been trying to hire someone for a while now. They've already let two people go as the employees were on Facebook/goofing off at work. That may sound mean but they have to make money/do work or the company is shot.

They were being paid them $15 an hour but I'm guessing that's not enough in North, NJ. for a sales/assistant.

tl;dr: Good people are hard to find.

Also: GRATS ON THE JOB!

I'm happy for you man, just be sure not to talk about your new job or products that will be released in the coming couple weeks. We saw how that panned out for the last unemployed bloke.

[–]mockjiggah 0 points1 point ago

Aaaaagghh! It's not a liquid! It's a great many pieces of solid matter that form a hard floor-like surface!

[–]badgunsmith 0 points1 point ago

Think I know that feel bro. Will get my first paycheck in one week after not working since october.

[–]Yourdomdaddy 0 points1 point ago

I felt the same way. Unemployed for almost a year. $300 in my account after first paycheck. Then brought back to reality when I tried to by an iPad :-(

[–]Trolls-Gone-Wild 31 points32 points ago

You were unemployed for almost a year, and you got a job then went and tried to buy an ipad? Get your shit together.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Business before pleasure. After long periods of unemployment use that first paycheck to pay off any debts. Use the 2nd to invest in keeping that job. Get a haircut, get some nice business attire, show them you want it.

I was a month into my 90 day review, my first job in 5 months. I paid off my debts, got some nice ultra cheap attire (thanks goodwill!) then bought both an ipad and 3-4 books on Javascript, HTML5, e-pub design. Everyday was an investment into myself (I'm a e-book designer).

Everyday after work I'd study and learn more about how to do my job better; follow upcoming trends, write better code, learn new tools etc…

Just had my 90 day review, easily passed. Practice being pragmatic, ideally you'll avoid future slipups.

[–]Trolls-Gone-Wild 1 point2 points ago

Yours makes sense, his doesn't, he went a year being unemployed, then tried to blow his first paycheck on an ipad.

[–]SF4L 2 points3 points ago

Seems like the more money I make, the more money I pay to bills.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I spoke with a designer that owns his own business and he said the same thing.

He also added something that stuck with me for many years. As his business grew so did his (personal) overhead. He bought a house, got married, had a child, had to buy a 2nd car etc…he said…

"I sit on my ass all day sacrifiing my health in order to make money. Then I trade my money to recuperate my health. All the while I'm too anxious about the future I can't enjoy time with my family. If we would of stayed in the same house, taken the bus, and been content with our tv, cell phones, computers, aluminum siding, etc…we could of afforded to take more time away from work. More time with friends, more time with family more time with the only things that bring us long term happiness."
