why does a german funeral company advertise in english?

[–]echoechotango 38 points39 points ago

that's why i think it's 'shopped

[–]snuffdog 37 points38 points ago

http://www.spassfieber.de/funpics/kommen-sie-doch-naeher.jpg - either it is shopped, or simply in different languages - Berlin is huge

[–]c_programmer 7 points8 points ago

That roughly translates to come closer. A lot of ads in Germany are in English because a lot of people speak it.

[–]5HAK 15 points16 points ago

A lot of ads in Germany are in English because advertisers are fucking stupid. Way less Germans actually speak sufficient english than you think. Remember that Douglas slogan "Come in and find out"? Yeah, they changed that to something german because people thought it meant "enter, and find your way back outside"...

[–]c_programmer 13 points14 points ago

That wouldn't surprise me. On a semi-related note I heard of one that was for a treatment workshop for ADD people that they called a "concentration camp."

[–]Potchi79 2 points3 points ago

Awkward.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I'm german and I just got the true meaning of that slogan...

[–]DarkIuna -4 points-3 points ago

I think most people on reddit understand English, but I know many German, who doesn´t understand it..

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

What are you talking about man? Literally NO ONE on reddit speaks English. Surely you are joking?

[–]Guys-in-bananas 4 points5 points ago

They fucking dub EVERYTHING in Germany. Based on my own experience it seems like many of them speak english badly, no offense.

[–]weside73 2 points3 points ago

Most people in the US speak english poorly.

[–]h8bit 1 point2 points ago

Advertisers aren't stupid. There is more to a language than the bits of literal meaning it conveys, such as prestige.

[–]CollisionCourse34 0 points1 point ago

extra credit point +1

[–]ugg116 4 points5 points ago

they wouldnt translate the name of the compandy though, no one could find it this way

[–]sabreteeth 0 points1 point ago

That lighting is weird. Is the track underwater?

[–]H-Resin 3 points4 points ago

It's not, I've seen this ad in person EDIT: after research it seems that the "come closer" is shopped on. However, it's just a direct translation from the German on the screen.

[–]quest78 2 points3 points ago

That plus the pixels

[–]t_hab 1 point2 points ago

It's actually badly shopped. You can see the distortion around the letters. Still very funny though.

[–]becauseyouneedtoknow 1 point2 points ago

Not sure why you got downvoted, or why people "think" its photoshopped. Its very obviously photo shopped. Its still a real thing, someone just replaced the german with english.

[–]t_hab 1 point2 points ago

I thought the photoshop was obvious too. Doesn't take away from the entertainment value at all though. Oh well. Upvotes, downvotes, I don't really count them. They can come and go as they please.

[–]wwoodhur 1 point2 points ago

I actually agree with you; the distortion is pretty obvious. Which makes me wonder about the guy /u/H-resin who claims to have seen this exact sign. Also, the German version, which can be seen in this post: translates almost exactly to 'come a little closer.' All very strange. But if you look at the text on the sign, it couldn't be more obvious that it has been 'shopped.

[–]ARoyaleWithCheese 0 points1 point ago

I've ran it through http://fotoforensics.com and even compared a Shopped version to the "original". It seems to be legitimate. Though it's hard to say for sure with black text on white background.

[–]ishouldbeworking69 2 points3 points ago

There are a shit ton of ads in Germany by German companies that are in English.

[–]cbrandolino 2 points3 points ago

In Berlin, at least around the center, there's probably more people speaking English (either natively or as zeir sekohnd languadg) than German.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]serrit 3 points4 points ago

Because Germans don't fall for it.

[–]KingOfFlan 0 points1 point ago

Also the people generally looking for funeral home services aren't usually the type of people who would enjoy a funeral home with a sense of humor about such matters.

[–]elfenjoghor 0 points1 point ago

When I was in Germany, it seemed like ads closer to airports and major train stations were in English, but most other ads were in German.

[–]hefnetefne 0 points1 point ago

I saw one of these in a station in the SF Bay Area.

[–]madarchivist -5 points-4 points ago

It's shopped. I'm from Berlin and we don't have any tube-like subway tunnels or stations. The shop seems to be based on an original advertisement that can be seen in a photo which was posted above: http://www.spassfieber.de/funpics/kommen-sie-doch-naeher.jpg

I think the original photo was shot in subway station Schwartzkopfstraße: http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Ubahnh_Schwartzkopffstr.JPG&filetimestamp=20110114174252

Edit: Yeah, it's U Schwartzkopfstr. for sure. You can see the same pattern of paint patches in the rear.

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 96 points97 points ago

You hear that Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability.

[–]nikolei_the_bovinian 25 points26 points ago

My name ... is Neo.

[–]Neogodfather 6 points7 points ago

Did I hear my name? Oh, wait. Never mind

Upvote to you sir, thank u for your bravery.

[–]Iceblood 5 points6 points ago

This picture is so old, it probably caused the extinction of the dinosaurs

[–]Lilgherkin 1 point2 points ago

All the dinosaurs walked onto the train tracks and died.

[–]AndyOniyate 11 points12 points ago

"Come a little closer" is REALLY pixelated. Shopped. May just be a shop from the actual German wording though.

[–]papa_georgio 2 points3 points ago

If anything, the photoshoped area should be less pixelated (due to less passes through jpeg compression).

[–]littleredrex 1 point2 points ago

[–]XenoX101 -2 points-1 points ago

But the railway lines also appear shopped in that, yet who would photoshop railway lines.

[–]fmyasitch 0 points1 point ago

[–]Roflkopt3r -1 points0 points ago

That's simply the .jpg because it has been reposted and -hosted so many times already.

[–]echoechotango 1 point2 points ago

I recognize the u-bahn stop but why would the ad. be in English (nicht Deutsch)? makes me think it's 'shopped.

[–]fmyasitch -1 points0 points ago

[–]mustyoshi 2 points3 points ago

At first I was like "wat". But then I read the fine print.

[–]TheZwerbot 1 point2 points ago

by reposting to reddit?

[–]Milkthiev 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, this (hilarious) advertisement would not go over well in the US.

[–]Chaser1314 0 points1 point ago

I'm beginning to understand the torment of being a Redditor. This is definitely a repost, for I have seen it about twice, now. SRSLY.

[–]Narniamon 0 points1 point ago

Toronto

[–]Kardlonoc 0 points1 point ago

Grim stuff =/

[–]reluctant-upvote -1 points0 points ago

I can picture a sign close to it saying "Wrongful death?" "Call 1800 (yada yada yada) attorney at law."

[–]cbrandolino 3 points4 points ago

In Europe we tend to blame idiotic acts on the people performing them.

[–]carriegood 0 points1 point ago

It's not in America.

[–]reluctant-upvote 0 points1 point ago

Read my quote. Did I say it was America? I just put a phone number.

[–]carriegood -1 points0 points ago

I wasn't trying to determine or dispute where this was. I was disparaging America and its litigiousness, spurred on by a legal industry desperate for clients. Obviously, I didn't make my point too clearly.

[–]reluctant-upvote -2 points-1 points ago

Then why did you tell me it's not America?

[–]RawbHaze -1 points0 points ago

Because it's not in America. Nor is it in India or Australia.

[–]reluctant-upvote 0 points1 point ago

Who cares where its at.

[–]RawbHaze 0 points1 point ago

Trying to change the topic, eh? We're discussing where it's not, not where it is.

It's not in Canada.

[–]basmith7 -3 points-2 points ago

Foreigners!

[–]simjanes2k 0 points1 point ago

How to get your business sued for every penny it's ever made*

[–]WeLikeGore 0 points1 point ago

Not in Germany.

[–]xinxy 0 points1 point ago

But why though? Do you often do what walls tell you to do?

[–]Vexxxy -2 points-1 points ago

Hey, hey guys. Hey I think... I think this might be photoshopped.

[–]dbubes 0 points1 point ago

how to use photoshop poorly

[–]knuckboy -1 points0 points ago

Shhh. He's trying to get business. ;)

[–]c_programmer 0 points1 point ago

I hear it's a great funeral home, people are just dying to get in.

[–]five_knuckle_chuckle 0 points1 point ago

This looks a lot like the TTC. also, totally fake.

[–]Narniamon 0 points1 point ago

No, I actually saw this once at the train platform in Toronto

[–]five_knuckle_chuckle 0 points1 point ago

Proof!!!! which station? which date and which time?

[–]Narniamon 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember it was a couple months ago.

[–]publius4 -1 points0 points ago

It's clever, but I have a feeling people looking for funeral services aren't in the mood for a teehee.

[–]GyRoEsEhNi -2 points-1 points ago

Natural selection

[–]CollisionCourse34 -1 points0 points ago

He who walks in front of a train, does not grow up to have children of his own. brilliant!

[–]New-To-The-Internet 3 points4 points ago

haha lol i know right?

[–]merkedya727 -2 points-1 points ago

Can't tell if real, or photo shopped..either way, super funny.

[–]fleagle66 -1 points0 points ago

Look around the lettering. See that funky blurry stuff? Photoshopped. Always a dead giveaway.

[–]Emery96 6 points7 points ago

[–]herp_derpenstein 0 points1 point ago

pixels and whatnot.

[–]Parchedflame -2 points-1 points ago

This is the most reposted image on the internet. The same goes for the "How to make your business grow" title. You're not clever, bitch.

[–]DontSayAlot -1 points0 points ago

Wasn't this on the Internet back when everything was ASCII?

[–]Mr44Red -1 points0 points ago

He's killing all his customers.

[–]peaches1465 -1 points0 points ago

Someone may have commented this, but you should submit this to /r/AdPorn

[–]Greebs -1 points0 points ago

I was jamming to Daft Punk's "Digital Love" just now. Sang the lyric, "come a little closer" as I saw this picture. My state of mind: I am probably going to get hit by a bus today.

[–]Gr8nPwrfulTrixie -1 points0 points ago

Now this is a clever marketing campaign.

[–]Roflkopt3r -1 points0 points ago

The amount of jpg is a very good guideline about how often a picture has been rehosted, which again implies the count how often it has already been posted on Reddit. Not much more to say about this image.

[–]Dodgeball456 -1 points0 points ago

[–]Sowy -1 points0 points ago

Definitely needs more JPEG

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]Mrandaloo -1 points0 points ago

x-post r/adporn

[–]danielvutran -1 points0 points ago

LMFAO

[–]rabbidpanda -1 points0 points ago

OP must be Indiana Jones to find those artifacts.

And by that I mean, there are a lot of jpeg artifacts surrounding the clearly altered text.

[–]hrvstr -1 points0 points ago

this ad is originally from germany, i think OP just translated it. meaning is still the same!

[–]ElRed_ -1 points0 points ago

FWIW the actual tube station looks like it's along the London Underground.

[–]Wartburg13 -1 points0 points ago

As a future funeral director I approve of this advertisement.

[–]Falkvinge -1 points0 points ago

I've seen this ad; it is not shopped. I'm guessing it was either in Berlin or London.

[–]AsthmaticNinja -1 points0 points ago

Holy shit, I've had this picture for YEARS. I should have capitalized on the opportunity.

[–]Momentstealer -4 points-3 points ago

I'm honestly surprised they haven't been sued for encouraging harm/death to people.

[–]Bonekicker -2 points-1 points ago

There was an add like this two years ago in the paris metro.

[–]fool_of_a_took -2 points-1 points ago

Certainly not in 'Murica it wouldn't.

[–]goldeneye_over_halo -2 points-1 points ago

am i the only one who remembers playing rush 2 for n64 (new york Level) because of this pic

[–]laschupacabras -3 points-2 points ago

Are you guys serious with the comments? This is obviously fake. The text is pixelated, probably one of the worst PS jobs I've ever seen.

[–]jimbobhas -5 points-4 points ago

seen this many times never noticed that it was for a funeral service haha
