That would scare the absolute SHIT out of me to look at. I have like, a big-thing-phobia.

[–]Nefeera 13 points14 points ago

You'll like this then.

[–]TaodeistCosmic 9 points10 points ago

I find stars with no planets somewhat sad. Hopefully that one will super nova, fertilize a cute little nebula and some nice life sustaining planets will arise.

[–]Nefeera 4 points5 points ago

It probably does have planets, lots of them I would imagine, it would just be unbelievably hard to see/detect them against the ridiculously massive Canis Majoris.

It's much more likely to create a massive black hole instead of fertilizing unfortunately :(

[–]TaodeistCosmic 2 points3 points ago

Those would be some insanely long orbits/years

[–]hibbity 10 points11 points ago

imagine if our lifetimes were judged on a scale where, born in spring, by fall your children have died of old age. that is assuming that seasons would function normally at such a greater distance from a star.

some thinking on it has me pretty sure that with seasons that long, even humans would be migratory, and our cultures would be so different than they are. perhaps every second generation would go en mass at the turning of the season, to travel to the opposite hemisphere and settle. or maybe the moderate zones would be most populous, since winters at the poles would be so long as to seem unending and unsurvivable.

imagine being born in winter, and after your 30th birthday, there is no more snow in your region until your grandchildren encounter their first frost at 45 years old. what a world.

for the purposes of this thought experiment, I didnt bother to actually look up or figure out how long a year would potentially be, but rather just assumed that 200-400 times longer as a stepping off point.

[–]TaodeistCosmic 6 points7 points ago

TIL: The planet Game of Thrones takes on orbits a giant fucking star.

[–]hibbity 8 points9 points ago

the seeming uncertainty about when winter comes suggests to me that they live in a binary system where a smaller star closely orbits a larger star on a diagonal plane. they only see true winter when one sun obscures the other, shielding the planet here's an illustration

source: pure speculation

[–]JustinRL_2point0 1 point2 points ago

That's some Isaac Asimov kinda shit right there.

[–]hibbity 2 points3 points ago

I came back to this thought. its a fun one. eventually, land ownership and faction territory issues would cause cities to form. these cities then face a winter of centuries, laughed off by the sons of the autumn as a myth, no-one alive has seen it.

during summer, the population would boom, with many cheap buildings designed to be comfortable in summer would be built and purchased by families whose' grandparents had never felt the cold. As the season changes the people in the inadequate housing have to build, steal, or fight for a better home. Or make an igloo. It would take modern government and regulation of structures to be sure that all homes were adequate, and I imagine that modern housing would just barely cut it for winters so long. every house would need to be much more efficient or fuel would become too expensive and the lower class would begin to freeze.

how quickly do evergreen saplings take root and grow in the winter? until coal and oil are discovered, 200 year winters might exhaust the wood supply in whole regions, or even possibly cause an extinction of some trees, harming the ecosystem forever.

story time.

here you are, 25 years old and looking at your first home. its a nice place, 2 stories, modern. There are great big windows overlooking the river. You're young and fresh out of college, and You're about to bury yourself in debt for a long time purchasing it. its the hottest its ever been in living memory, and has been your whole life. It's the last of the 20 years of august. You settle down with your girlfriend and make your way in the world.

..........

Fast forward, you're 45 now, the house is nearly paid off, and the car. Its late October, 55F outside. Its been pleasantly cool for 15 years now. you start wearing a jacket and a few years back you bought a small heater for your home, you finally caved in to your wife and two beautiful daughters. electricity is cheap, the demand fell drastically. one company bought the others as the weather grew cooler and the stockholders abandoned them. You remember reading that the other day. The more you know, right?

..........

shake the snow globe and pan in. there you are at home, 65, with a shovel in your hand. you bought a snow blower 5 years ago, when the snow stopped melting off the drive. Damn you hate shoveling snow. You keep thinking you should get to fixing up the house some, its getting drafty. You finally hire a roofing company to come out and put on a new roof. The man told you that soon you would have to start shoveling off the roof, as it will stop melting off as it gets colder. The house wasn't designed with snow in mind. His brother ran a construction company that could fix it though. It honestly needed it, so you call and meet with him. His quote is more than you want to pay, so you decide you can don't need it when he can't be talked down. As it got colder, power became expensive again, so you rented an insulation blower and blew fresh insulation into your walls and attic, and replaced your windows. there, good as new. You put the house up for sale, but its a summer home, and no-one is buying those. the media has people running scared of homes built before the weather changed. They have been since the snow fell.

..........

Blink, the lights flick on. You're in bed, 75 years old. Your wife shakes you, insisting she heard a noise. it's 2:30am. You tell her its probably the kids. Your oldest daughter moved back in after her divorce. Its been nice to get to see the grand kids every day. You get up and then you hear it too. a nasty creak, followed by a small pop, coming from upstairs. You look outside and see it snowing hard again. You go to your grandsons room and wake him, asking if he shoveled the roof like he had been told. He mumbles that he forgot and so you drag him out of bed, telling him to get clothes on, and you run to get dressed yourself. You meet your grandson in the garage, and he's obviously very upset that he has to do it now. You both climb the stairs and get to work, you feel the roof groaning under the weight of the snow and you both set to work at a feverish pace. You're not young anymore and you cant keep up with the youngster, but a good portion of the roof is clear and the crisis is averted. Your grandson apologizes profusely and you never have to tell him twice to shovel the roof again. You inspect the attic and see that there was some damage to the house, and you brace the damaged boards and a few around them just for good measure. There are some new drafts in the house, but you just turn the heat up a bit and cant find where they could originate. Its nice, after the night on the roof, the boy seems to have a better grasp on responsibility. He'll turn out just fine.

..........

(shutter sounds) camera iris opens on you and your family. 82 years old, you're an old man. Your youngest grandson is graduating today. You're very proud. He's going to the south for school, and is excited because he hardly remembers a time with no snow. The whole family is together once for dinner, Its been a long time. Your oldest granddaughter has a beautiful toddler now, and you spoil him every chance you get. The cost of fuel has slowly climbed. Its expensive to heat your home, but you get by. You have maybe ten years left in you if you take care of yourself, but the cold is torture in your joints. You don't go upstairs if you don't have to. The weeks pass and your grandson departs and things settle down for a few weeks. Its been snowing lightly for the last few days, but you don't think much of it, you haven't had to mention that the roof needed attention in a long time, as its been taken care of by your grandson. your daughters are both visiting, all of their kids grown up now too. Its snowing hard now. you all drink and tell stories from the past, until late in the night, finally retiring to bed.

..........

A harsh touch of cold rouses you from sleep. Its 4am. Its cold. Very cold. Youre so tired. You start to get up but the cold quickly chases you back under the covers, joints on fire. You hear a door close, and know someone is up. your daughter will handle it, the heater must be off... Your wife is still there beside you. You snuggle up to your wife for warmth and go back to sleep. It will warm up soon. The weight of the snow has caused your house to shift, allowing the door to swing open and many windows to break in their frames. the cold penetrates the house as you sleep, silently, slowly, the cold dulls your senses.

you snap awake at a huge crash. The roof and one upstairs bedroom fall into the basement along with 2 tons of snow. Your elder daughter's sudden cry is cut short as she's buried by the downvotes. you hear your second daughter scream as well, continuing, echoing into the silent night. Your neighbor heard it but didn't investigate. Your body is slow, clumsy, your mind is foggy and you cant focus. You're tired, and warm. you throw the blanket off and take a few steps toward the door. Your house groans, you ache. The ceiling over your head collapses, knocking you to the hall floor, stunning you. You see that your bedroom is a hole to the basement. Your wife never cried out. You're naked. there's snow in your house. lots. snow. its cold. you cant think, your bed is in the basement. your daughters are in the basement. no, that isnt right, they're upstairs. You're confused. you climb down to the basement. You see your wife. you see blood. You cry out to her as you stumble thru the debris. she's underneath some wood and drywall, one hand and her head emerging from the pile, blood on her lips, eyes still closed. no pulse. so cold. You cant hear your daughters. You yell as loud as you can for help, for your daughters. its snowing into the basement. snowing on you. You yell again, beginning to sob. You cant seem to move. its all like a dream, so foggy. you look at your wife, confused, whats this mess on the bed? You shake her. Harder. You cant seem to reason this out. You sit down next to your wife, look at her. What a beautiful woman, you think. Shes dead. (sleeping) no. shes sleeping. yes. Its night. Bedtime. You're so tired. You climb into bed next to your wife and pull up the refuse like a blanket, blinking at yourself in confusion, unable to figure out whats wrong. Why is it snowing inside? you grab your wife's smashed hand under the blanket of debris. You frown, still unable to sort out the problem. You snuggle up to your loving wife, not understanding the resistance and weight on the bed. You've been so lucky to have her. You'll figure it out in the morning, you think. You never wake up, hypothermia claims you.

Your grandson blames himself for not shoveling the roof. It was always his job. He'll never be free of the guilt, he killed his mother, aunt, and grandparents. he goes on to be a supervillain, but that's a different tale.

the end.

Thank you, good sir.

[–]royisabau5 1 point2 points ago

Fuck

[–]imakemisteaks 7 points8 points ago

When I get the flu, I get this reoccurring dream that everything is bigger than me and keeps getting bigger. It gets so bad that I wake up in tears and sweating more than if I had run a couple miles.

tl;dr: I kinda know that feel.

[–]ccm596 4 points5 points ago

Holy crap. I used to get the same dream!! I also used to have the opposite, where one thing that's supposed to be fairly big would keep getting tinier. Had a slightly smaller effect on me. (Get it? Smaller? xD )

[–]iamtewSpace is deep 2 points3 points ago

Sounds a bit like Alice in Wonderland Syndrome, although you're dreaming it..

Happens to me sometimes when I have been awake for too long, sleep deprivation and all that. Can be a very surreal feeling indeed.

[–]cjpapetti 1 point2 points ago

Whoa I thought I was the only one who had reoccurring doom and gloom dream during flu. In my dream everything keeps getting bigger and bigger until the sky becomes dark and starts falling. I have only minutes to live before the black sky crushes me.

[–]jcrackcorn 0 points1 point ago

That's what happens when a fever breaks (ends).

[–]watchpigsflyNyanyanyana 0 points1 point ago

I also get this. This is incredibly weird. It scares the hell out of me.

[–]someamericandudeWoah or whoa? 1 point2 points ago

As much as I'm fascinated by space, I can't go to planetarium shows because of the rapid way they zoom in on gas giants and suns. It's one of the only things that absolutely terrifies me. Is there a name for this phobia?

[–]ccm596 1 point2 points ago

Yes, that's what terrifies me too!! If you saw my comment somewhere under my original comment, about the recurring dream, that's what happened in it! And I'm sure there is a name, but I haven't looked in to it, so I wouldn't know for sure.

[–]DatoeDakari 0 points1 point ago

Like the thought of drifting out on the ocean in a small boat, and seeing the water become dark because of a gigantic creature swimming below you...

[–]ccm596 0 points1 point ago

oh my goodness, yes! Like, I always thought that the absolute scariest job I could ever have would involve swimming with blue whales or whale sharks. A, because I can't swim, haha, but mainly because, even though I know they're harmless to humans (probably usually) they're so big and scary =(

[–]elsherbini 83 points84 points ago

that and we would be consumed by it in a heavy gaseous molten death

[–]bigbadler 25 points26 points ago

not if we were orbiting...

[–]Imsecretlyfapping 14 points15 points ago

But orbiting it would take so long that we couldn't live on earth. Jupiter would block the suns rays from hitting earth for days (months?) At a time.

[–]PhilxBefore 8 points9 points ago

Would the reflection of the sun off of Jupiter's surface not be enough to sustain us, and be obnoxiously bright?

[–]kevinstonge 37 points38 points ago

If I were at home I'd draw you a picture to show you why your question is silly

[–]secretlypooping 5 points6 points ago

we will wait...

[–]nitid_name 15 points16 points ago

http://imgur.com/KMR0H

When you're on the bright side of Jupiter, the dark side of the earth gets reflected light.

The longer we're in orbit around jupiter as a moon, the more we'd become tidally locked (that is, the jupiter side of earth would always face Jupiter, just as the dark side of the moon always faces away from earth). It would take one Jupiter "lunar" month (the orbit period of the earth around Jupiter) for the earth to complete a day (spin once on its axis).

[–]framy 1 point2 points ago

In that case we could just all move to the bright side.

[–]nitid_name 1 point2 points ago

You'd still have the problem of month long "days."

[–]danimal6000 1 point2 points ago

OP will deliver

[–]PhilxBefore 1 point2 points ago

'Tis a silly question, indeed.

[–]Giant_Leprechaun 2 points3 points ago

we would still get normal sunlight, except when Jupiter makes a... Jupitiliar (?) eclipse, which given it's size and according to hichaechoc's calculations, would probably happen every day and a half.

[–]suricatta79 11 points12 points ago

The word you're looking for is Jovian.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]suricatta79 1 point2 points ago

Jovian is the adjectival form of Jupiter... so yeah, don't really know how/if it would apply to other planets.

[–]zelmerszoetrop 4 points5 points ago

If we were behind Jupiter, then the side of Jupiter getting hit by the sun would be facing away from us.

Think about why the moon has phases.

[–]keddey -1 points0 points ago

Jupiter doesn't create its own light

[–]somerandomguy02 4 points5 points ago

It wouldn't. I'm not going to do the the math but in order to maintain orbit that close to something like that, we would have to be traveling very fast and would orbit at a much faster rate than if we were orbiting farther away.

[–]hichaechoc 20 points21 points ago

According to my calculations on this page, the earth would take 1.41434 days for one orbit around jupiter at a distance of 363465 km.

[–]Sevidicalone 3 points4 points ago

But I get orbit sickeness

[–]somerandomguy02 2 points3 points ago

They have pills for that. Suck it up.

[–]lridescent 2 points3 points ago

Also our orbit might well be tilted like that of the moon around us, allowing for more sun time.

[–]bayleo 1 point2 points ago

Indeed, Earth would have to be movin' pretty fast to orbit that close. It would also tidal lock us damn fast, so possibly shorter light periods for the Jupiter facing side.

[–]somerandomguy02 0 points1 point ago

I agree. I was ignoring all that craziness that would make life here even more impossible.

[–]dawsxJungle love 2 points3 points ago

What are you basing that on? The moon orbits Earth at a distance of 363,495 km. If Earth were orbiting Jupiter at that distance, it would orbit once every 34 hours. Jupiter has a diameter of 142,984 km, and every orbit Earth would travel 2,283,906 km in a circle. That means that for about 6.3% of the orbit (142,984/2,283,906), or for 2 hours and change every 34 hours, it would pass through Jupiter's shadow. That's noticeable, but still relatively insignificant.

[–]Piscator629 2 points3 points ago

We would be closer in orbit than Io 421,700 km. Between radiation and tidal heating all other effects would pale and we Earthians would not survive 24 hours.

[–]Chunkeeboi 3 points4 points ago

Which is just as well because travelling at that speed would wreck your hair.

[–]rickrollinJenkem connoiseur 0 points1 point ago

What about a binary orbit?

[–]SiliconRain 13 points14 points ago

Reminds me of this awesome video.

[–]Santos_L_Halper 4 points5 points ago

I don't know why they chose that music because whenever I see it and Jupiter flies by my heart stops.

[–]antipode 1 point2 points ago

I think you just answered your question! For me, that music makes the video.

[–]bellicose- 2 points3 points ago

That Jupiter was fucking scary

[–]ericelectrik 1 point2 points ago

is there any reason why they left out saturn?

[–]Khalexus 0 points1 point ago

Jesus.

How amazing would it be to have a twin Earth orbiting us like that though?

[–]bigbadler 25 points26 points ago

smaller than I would expect

[–]kerbuffel 19 points20 points ago

sounds like my prom night.

[–]reddKidney 2 points3 points ago

the moon is far out man.

[–]TriumphantTumbleweedHappy trees 2 points3 points ago

That's because this picture is not accurate. This video shows different.

[–]Rick___ 7 points8 points ago

That would really mess with menstruation cycles.

[–]anthonyy 7 points8 points ago

Does this kind of freak the shit out of anyone else?

[–]TrippyVersion 6 points7 points ago

It might be this magnificent view or the larger size of Jupiter, but now I really wanna go check it out, more so than the moon.

[–]gathly 4 points5 points ago

If the Earth wasn't destroyed by this, think of the tides. Entire cities would be tide pools.

[–]relaytheurgency 3 points4 points ago

Well, this wasn't calculated with any real math. With what respect is jupiter "the same distance" from the earth as the moon in this photo?

[–]bean891 2 points3 points ago

radiation?

[–]zelmerszoetrop -3 points-2 points ago

Fatal.

[–]tusocalypse 2 points3 points ago

I would think that we would be more of a moon to it than it would be a moon to us.

[–]Hamilton5M 2 points3 points ago

Radiation mmm mmm

[–]TXKush01 2 points3 points ago

can we get more pictures like this with some other planets?

[–]triforce88 6 points7 points ago

And then Jupiter would immediately suck us in a kill us. It would be a beautiful death though!

[–]kol15 7 points8 points ago

Orbit.

[–]ajsatx 1 point2 points ago

i hate to be that guy but did anyone not already see this on the frontpage?

[–]reddKidney 2 points3 points ago

/r/pics? nobody subscribes to that ghost town of a subreddit. surely OP is not karma whoring.

[–]TheCatsBananasCosmic 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes I imagine that the entire sky is just a huge surface/planet

[–]Daerog 1 point2 points ago

That picture, OP, is the stuff of beauty and my dreams.

[–]devourer09Woah or whoa? 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a giant overlord watching us.

[–]Venom2488Woah or whoa? 0 points1 point ago

[–]dissident93 0 points1 point ago

im curious to see other planets and how they would compared being the moon's distance away..

[–]mdtoolfan 0 points1 point ago

Saturn comes back around

[–]juzza12 0 points1 point ago

PLEASE MAKE MORE PHOTOS LIKE THIS!

[–]kindofawardance 0 points1 point ago

Then WE would be a moon of Jupiter! Fuuuuuuuck....

[–]baconsucks 0 points1 point ago

That's soooo chill. Awesome submit, guy.

[–]Lowercase_Drawer 0 points1 point ago

Now that is frickin' cool.

[–]Samthescott 0 points1 point ago

Then we'd be a moon of jupiter.

[–]MatthewUnburdened 0 points1 point ago

Let's say this was possible, and life had formed on Earth with Jupiter so close to us. Imagine the impact it would have had on all of human thought (in the way that the moon has): ancient mythology & modern religion, our calendar system, our understanding of space, etc. Kinda mind blowing

[–]drainX 0 points1 point ago

The gravitational forces would bend earths mantle, vulcanos and lava floods everywhere. Our oceans would boil away.

[–]calendula 0 points1 point ago

This pic reminds me of something that happened last month. I hadn't really been paying attention to the whole "transit of Venus" thing and was totally going to stay up late to watch Venus cross the face of the moon. Briefly wondered why everyone was talking about welding masks & pinhole boxes. Forgot about it and fell asleep; wasn't until a friend posted a pic the following morning that I realized my terrible mistake.

[–]IameAuhSomme 0 points1 point ago

That would probably be the thing we see a week before the Earth collides with Jupiter.

[–]rawkies -1 points0 points ago

Center-to-center distances or surface-to-surface?
