Swap out each bulb for a different colored one and have yourself a disco party.

[–]JRutterbush 166 points167 points ago

Swap out each bulb for a different colored one and have yourself a seizure party.

[–]nikchi 107 points108 points ago

What's the difference?

[–]JRutterbush 421 points422 points ago

In a disco party, break-dancing is optional.

[–]FloppY_ 54 points55 points ago

flawless

[–]sierrabravo1984 1 point2 points ago

[–]Fuh_Queue 2 points3 points ago

I think you mean "the worm."

[–]makopolo2001 26 points27 points ago

[–]macarattack 0 points1 point ago

In a seizure party, if you attempt to dance you might break something.

[–]contributingfactors 2 points3 points ago

In a seizure party everyone does the worm and the person able to stand up get the applause for being outstanding.

[–]jettrscga 12 points13 points ago

This is a fabulous idea!

[–]Itsalreadytaken 6 points7 points ago

I like your enthusiasm!

[–]svullenballe 8 points9 points ago

I don't think the cords are made for spinning lights.

[–]keyboardlover 1 point2 points ago

That fan is doing it wrong.

[–]JewBoySandler 0 points1 point ago

This is the third time today that I have correctly guessed the top comment on a post. I need to get off the Internet.

[–]SpermWhale 0 points1 point ago

Consider it as a sculpture, in memory of Donna Summer.

[–]tripled153 0 points1 point ago

And Robin Gibb.

[–]string97bean 67 points68 points ago

As a tall person this terrifies me.

[–]CounterPillow 57 points58 points ago

Mythbusters have shown that ceiling fan motors are not strong enough to seriously injure a person if they somehow get their head in there.

I hope I was able to let you walk upright again without being afraid of getting decapitated.

[–]MangoScango 86 points87 points ago

Fuck, I could have told you that. Still hurts quite a bit though.

Bunk bed + ceiling fan. What the fuck were my parents thinking?

[–]empw 82 points83 points ago

Natural selection.

[–]jettrscga 89 points90 points ago

"If the boy lives, he will be a man."

[–]hubilation 27 points28 points ago

MangoScango, the boy who lived.

[–]J_LaP 12 points13 points ago

No he's the man who lived, those are the rules, weren't you paying attention.

[–]wagerhope 0 points1 point ago

Negative. He's the boy who lived and the man who lives.

[–]J_LaP 0 points1 point ago

The boy was put into the bed and hit in the head by the fan, but as soon as he was hit and survived he became a man. A boy was hit in the head, a man survived and lived. He was the man who lived.

[–]Squirrel_Nuts 0 points1 point ago

And come to die?

[–]BurgerWorker 5 points6 points ago

Both of them together?

[–]abstrusejoker 3 points4 points ago

"Every 60 seconds, a minute goes by"

[–]nikchi 18 points19 points ago

Masturbation prevention.

[–]coffinoff 22 points23 points ago

What the fuck were my parents thinking?

"... we can just make it look like an accident."

[–]doubleplusepic 3 points4 points ago

Me too brotha. Me too.

That's a mistake you only make once. Or four times, once breaking one of the wings off with the back of your head, at age 10.

[–]Falcorsc2 20 points21 points ago

Yeah...when the blades are spinning. Not when the wheel of glassy shards are spinning...

[–]sandmam86 -1 points0 points ago

On toilet at work...trying not to laugh...

[–]blackngold518 -1 points0 points ago

I just keep rewatching.

[–]goofball_jones 5 points6 points ago

[–]CounterPillow 0 points1 point ago

Why would you do that? You're a horrible horrible person. :(

[–]goofball_jones 0 points1 point ago

what? no no, I didn't...Dwight did it.

Yeah, it's Dwight. Blame him!

[–]cyberbemon 4 points5 points ago

[–]string97bean 1 point2 points ago

Maybe not seriously injure, but I have hit my head on one in the past, and it hurts like hell.

[–]patman21 1 point2 points ago

I don't consider Mythbusters to be a very good source. Mind you I like the show, and it's entertaining, but it's for the same reason I wouldn't base the value of my goods on an episode of Pawn Stars.

[–]CounterPillow 3 points4 points ago

All my "Mythbusters" posts are pretty tongue-in-cheek. They only tested a small variety of fans and not many situations, but it gives a good impression of what is the most likely thing to happen.

They prove/disprove myths by experiment, which is one of the core concepts of science. Show them some love, at least. :P

[–]patman21 1 point2 points ago

Nah, you still got my upvote. The problem is, they do indeed test by experiment, but like you said, only a limited number of circumstances, enough to make good TV.

[–]omelets4dinner -2 points-1 points ago

also when you say 'seriously injured' what do you mean? cos I know a few people who were seriously injured by ceiling fans. I'd like a link to this mythbusters episode.

[–]CounterPillow -1 points0 points ago

Cut aorta, decapitation, busted neck, cracked skull...

"needing a few stitches" isn't serious injury.

[–]omelets4dinner -1 points0 points ago

still waiting on that link Counter. I did find this mythbusters video that I quote 30 seconds in saying "deadly but not decapitation"

So yes, no decapitation, but everyone should be worried about serious injury with a ceiling fan. Cracked skulls are very very possible, let me tell you

[–]CounterPillow 0 points1 point ago

They achieved "deadly" with a industrial ceiling fan that would be hanging a good 10m from ground.

Sorry that I can't provide a link, TV shows usually aren't just freely available on the internet. It's not that I'm trying to cover up my evil conspiracy here, it's more about piracy.

[–]JRutterbush 0 points1 point ago

Still hurts like a fucker, though.

[–]mindbleach 0 points1 point ago

Mythbusters didn't test for the 'blades' being made of electrified glass.

[–]jaap424 0 points1 point ago

Did they test the thin metal ceiling fan blades to, because at the speed those things are revolving even if they don't have a lot of follow through i would imagine getting hit in the head with one of those would land you with a lot of stitches at the least?

[–]Train22nowhere 1 point2 points ago

They tested an industrial metal fan spinning really fast and it wasn't enough to decapitate. You'd be in pain though.

Edit: Found a clip even their supercharged fan couldn't decapitate, though you'd still probably be dead from it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wVVkCJpY4U

[–]jaap424 0 points1 point ago

I used to be very anxious about the metal ceiling fan over my bed, but if it cant chop anything off it will probably be fine.

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point ago

But now it is spinning glass and electricity.

[–]eyecite -1 points0 points ago

I'm sure you could get a nifty concussion at least. Also, me stretching has resulted in many expletives and bruised fingers.

[–]XxWhIpLaSh18xX -1 points0 points ago

That doesn't mean its fun being hit by them xD

[–]funfungiguy -1 points0 points ago

This information would have come in more handy about 25-30 years ago when my uncle used to pick me up and threaten to give me a haircut by sticking my head underneath the one at my gramma's house.

[–]XxWhIpLaSh18xX -1 points0 points ago

Being another tall person, I share your concerns with this light. But its still cool lol.

[–]awesomeck 58 points59 points ago

took me longer than i'm proud of to see whats wrong with this picture

[–]skakruk 28 points29 points ago

Came here to say this. In my defense, I didn't sleep anything.

[–]highgravitycane 67 points68 points ago

Sleep something immediately.

[–]SandJA1 23 points24 points ago

This guy talks what he knows about.

[–]skakruk 9 points10 points ago

Am I missing something here? Is it my expression of "not sleeping anything" that's not used a lot?

[–]SandJA1 10 points11 points ago

I've never heard it used and it sounded funny. Just making fun while I sip on me coffee, trying to wake up.

[–]junkmanuk 5 points6 points ago

you need to sleep something else

[–]honestlyconcerned 0 points1 point ago

I did what you see there.

[–]igetript 1 point2 points ago

I kept waiting for something to be thrown into the fan >.>

[–]mayorjimmy 18 points19 points ago

i guess those extra screws you had leftover from the assembly WERE important....

[–]nathanb065 95 points96 points ago

This is ahem FAN-tastic!

[–]raptorman3054 35 points36 points ago

Lemme guess, you'll see yourself out?

[–]gigitrix -1 points0 points ago

Oh, you!

[–]turtal46 35 points36 points ago

The light fixtures aren't attached to the motor in any way in ceiling fans...

Without making the fan do that on purpose, I have no idea how or why it could be doing that.

[–]dlogan3344 13 points14 points ago

I just installed a ceiling fan for my mother and thought the same thing as I watched this.

[–]ShawnBoo 11 points12 points ago

I worked as an electrician for 1 year and a half, I can confirm, this can in fact happen by accident.

EDIT: Seeing as how Mr. SpeakerCity wants to resort to pictures of him doing electrical to prove that fans can't do this... Here I am holding random cables I found in my room. http://i.imgur.com/j0uCv.jpg

[–]RythmicSlapping 7 points8 points ago

I linked this thread over at r/diy. Those guys know their stuff when it comes to home improvement. Here is the response:

Notice that the lights aren't on. The guy who claims he did it, claims he's a apprentice electrician. Even if he attached the wires wrong, they would still wind up in about 3 rounds and come undone, eliminating the power or simply stop the rotation. There's no way physically possible that the lighting portion of a overhead fan would be attached to spin like that, much less actually wired up so. The wires would make it about 3 "arounds" before they pulled apart and shorted the whole circuit. Overhead fans and light assemblies JUST AREN'T BUILT THIS WAY. It's a fake gif, or someone rigged it up to do that intentionally. The person saying it can happen out of the box, is either a troll or outright liar.

[–]ShawnBoo 0 points1 point ago

cool, thanks

[–]turtal46 7 points8 points ago

I'm actually an electrical motor engineer that designs climate control motors for air condition units, however, the department that creates fan motors is next door. I've seen the operation of most models being fabricated and built.

Unless someone did this on purpose, I'm very confused how it would have done this 'out-of-the-box'. The light fixtures are normally part of the shell cast, and are not connected to the motor at all.

Sounds like someone may have played a joke, of sorts.

[–]ShawnBoo -3 points-2 points ago

I understand how both of you can insist that this could not happen. Unfortunately, you will have to accept the words of a stranger on the internet who says "This has happened, I did it".

[–]turtal46 1 point2 points ago

The only doubts I have, are due to my experience. I cannot speak for all fans, obviously.

Strictly from my personal experience, this is a giant mistake, most likely caused from something intentional.

However, if you state you pulled a fan out of the box, installed it, and it did this, well I guess I'll have to take your word on it. I still have my doubts, though.

[–]ShawnBoo -4 points-3 points ago

Yep. I mean I obviously fucked up somewhere along the line, and my boss had to come fix it.

[–]TRAUMAjunkie 0 points1 point ago

People don't just go on the internet and lie either.

[–]2plus1 1 point2 points ago

This is random but sort of on topic. Would you mind giving me your opinion of my ceiling fan issue, I posted it here. It isn't nearly as bad as this one!

[–]ShawnBoo 0 points1 point ago

lmao, I am so incredibly under-qualified to give you any advise. So I'll decline. I worked for 1 1/2 years as an apprentice 4 years ago, apparently fucked something up so bad that everyone is saying it is impossible to do. So I'm afraid I'd turn your fan into a non-functional piece of furniture.

[–]2plus1 0 points1 point ago

Thanks anyway:)

[–]rijnzael 1 point2 points ago

I cannot believe how mad you made someone by politely stating something you perceive to be a fact. Pretty unprofessional for someone who is supposedly in the armed services to attack you like that.

[–]kohan69 1 point2 points ago

Doesnt it tangle all the wires up until they get twisted and torn?

[–]ShawnBoo 1 point2 points ago

Yeah the wire were very twisted when opened. Nothing was broken though

[–]kohan69 0 points1 point ago

so adding a relay or something to switch directiosn after x rotations for non stop lamparty?

[–]jorsiem 0 points1 point ago

you have nice teeth

[–]ShawnBoo 0 points1 point ago

Thanks :)

[–]phyzome -1 points0 points ago

Stop-motion animation.

[–]turtal46 2 points3 points ago

[–]Alpinestarhero 12 points13 points ago

strobe lights!

[–]burntham77 5 points6 points ago

My first thought too. Time for a sexy party.

[–]regimus 9 points10 points ago

The lights are stationary and the rest of the universe is rotating.

[–]CounterPillow 0 points1 point ago

I feel like this is going to be a thread about relativity, black holes and the mass of atoms again. I better hide before they scare the living shit out of me again. :(

[–]Acduck -1 points0 points ago

Everything dies because of Entropie and dark holes..everything

[–]DudeMan18 17 points18 points ago

So what I think is really happening here is that op is running around the fan with it going, so the blades look stationary

[–]doombot813 26 points27 points ago

THEN WHO WAS CEILING!?

[–]ForumWarrior 5 points6 points ago

[–]Sp4m 5 points6 points ago

[–]tech-bits 0 points1 point ago

If I remember correctly this was originally posted to reddit by this guy.

[–]CHMI4286 1 point2 points ago

Hello? Customer Support? Stop me if you've heard this before.

[–]troopah 2 points3 points ago

Either that, or he's running around it really fast.

[–]quadnips 0 points1 point ago

CURSE YOU IKEA!

[–]KuroTheFox 2 points3 points ago

You had ONE JOB!

[–]composedryan 2 points3 points ago

Thats impossible. The blades themselves are attached to the motor that rotates them. Unless this is a severe factory screw up, I call bullshit.

[–]PoopMaster5000 0 points1 point ago

I didn't realize something was wrong until about a minute of watching the gif.

[–]Hellsing4682 0 points1 point ago

The lights are not spinning, the camera's spinning with the fans.

[–]TheVanguardBandit 0 points1 point ago

I laughed WAY too hard at that. Caption is what really did me in.

[–]bambamm1084 0 points1 point ago

I ain't even mad

[–]TechnoEquinox 1 point2 points ago

You bastard. I'm just here, donating blood plasma in a quiet facility, and I am cracking the motherfuck up.

And of course, having 25 Cha. +7 Mod+1d6, I have to show everyone around me. So I have the whole damn place in a fit of giggles.

[–]Chuymatt 0 points1 point ago

DND plasma bank? The caffeine and cholesterol content of that plasma must be incredible.

[–]TechnoEquinox -1 points0 points ago

42% plasma via osmosis by volume. It's exactly what they want from their donors, but I'm one of the few who maintains a perfect 42 consistently.

[–]pisobarz 0 points1 point ago

as a kid i always dreamed that my bedroom lights would do this.

[–]DrunkenAss 0 points1 point ago

That's going to fuck up the wiring to the light bulbs.

[–]Fulty 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't the power cable be getting twisted?

[–]mightyjake 0 points1 point ago

Yes. I imagine the wires aren't hooked up (as the bulbs aren't illuminated).

However, a functional version of this, with working bulbs could probably be built using slip rings.

[–]ViralFrost 0 points1 point ago

Disco lighting!

[–]Imtheone457 0 points1 point ago

But from the perspective of the lights, the fan is spinning

[–]jevmorgan 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't the electrical cords for the light bulbs get all twisted up and make the spinning stop?

[–]boojieboy -1 points0 points ago

Wife: No, you put the screws on that other thing! Don't you ever read the directions?

Husband: who has time to read directions?

[–]ball_and_chain -2 points-1 points ago

You should re-post on /r/trees it'll take them a while! haha!

[–]ieatpotatochips -1 points0 points ago

I saw something like this in a movie once. I hate to be the one to inform you, but you're going to die.

[–]Nevenge -1 points0 points ago

Oh sweet, modern art.

[–]Drawtaru -1 points0 points ago

It took me entirely too long to figure out what was wrong with this picture...

[–]abcmom2009 -1 points0 points ago

LOL It took me a minute to realize what was wrong

[–]eVaan13 -1 points0 points ago

If the lights are spinning, will the fan be able to light up?

[–]culby -1 points0 points ago

A month or so ago, my stepdad was trying to install a ceiling fan with a remote control setup. It included a box that you'd install between the power from the house and the fan, and the remote would control the lights and the speed of the fan.

He got the wiring horribly wrong, and whenever he turned the fan on, the lights would blink.

[–]lsetten -1 points0 points ago

it appears that they must have added a step rather

[–]gyrfalcons -1 points0 points ago

I kept waiting for something to fly out of nowhere and crash into the fan blades. Somehow I am vaguely disappointed that nothing did.

[–]xerim -1 points0 points ago

Anyone else look at this and have a gut reaction of "Hmm, looks fine to me."

[–]synthesis11 -1 points0 points ago

How many Mexicans does it take to screw a light bulb?

[–]L1ft3d_R3s3arCh -1 points0 points ago

Never should have gone to Ikea...

[–]tannersnotreal -1 points0 points ago

ONE JOB...

[–]psychmajor411 -1 points0 points ago

Does lightning now shoot out of the fan blades?

[–]technojamin -1 points0 points ago

Actually, the blades, the entire room, and the camera are the only things that are spinning.

[–]dragnerz -1 points0 points ago

What are you talking about, that's just a new design concept to ensure maximum light coverage.

[–]mspinkyy -1 points0 points ago

God, I laughed far more than I should have at this.

[–]kungfuschnitzel -1 points0 points ago

I looked at it for 10 seconds and was like "How is this funny?"

Then I realized that the bulbs are rotating, not the fan.

[–]pizzastock -1 points0 points ago

Dammit IKEA!

[–]RoboNinjaPirate -1 points0 points ago

And this is why Ikea Electrical items concern me.

[–]adfoote -1 points0 points ago

Maybe the fan is working, just someone's moving the camera around really fast with it.

[–]HerpJersey -1 points0 points ago

If you flick the switch, do the blades start spinning?

[–]brussels4breakfast -1 points0 points ago

I'm so dumb I didn't even see a problem with this at first.

[–]chronicpayne -1 points0 points ago

Wow... was that taken from an apartment in downtown Vancouver??

[–]messy14 -1 points0 points ago

Have fun with a seizure

[–]gluesniffer11 -1 points0 points ago

IKEA! You win again

[–]funfungiguy -2 points-1 points ago

[–]Dobmeister -2 points-1 points ago

Ceiling fan is 'as it should be.' Camera is recording from a rotating reference frame, stationary with respect to the blades, orbiting with respect to the lamps. Simple.

[–]fondupot -3 points-2 points ago

Chances are the person forgot to remove the "brake pads" that hold the fins from spinning before its fully installed. I just did a fan a few months ago and didnt realize they needed to be removed.

[–]PEDO_BEAR99 -1 points0 points ago

i saw this one the Ellen Show. It's hilarious
