No. But I tell people that I can because I don't have any real anecdotes, and my social inadequacies cause me to invent implausible and inappropriate stories.

As a mobile front end developer, it's lacking a lot of HTML5 features which has forced my team to create a neutered down version of our application. Other than that, I use the browser with the fastest JS engine and minimal footprint so Chrome it is.

You should try building a website. Build it in the new standard HTML5 and make it look all nice and pretty in Chrome and Firefox. Then go and open IE and see that it has completely disregarded half of your stuff and vomited all over the rest.

[–]flying-sheep 4 points5 points ago

and yes, this is still valid for IE9.

ie9 is the first decent one for users, but i doubt that they’ll ever make a browser which is up to par with firefox & chrome.

[–]etruscan 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IE9 isn't bad - they've come a long way in their last two major releases, and in my mind they've surpassed Firefox from a usability perspective. While Firefox is bloating, IE has pared down. However, I've long since abandoned Firefox in favor of Chrome.

[–]BernzSed 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree that newer versions of IE aren't bad, but Microsoft's decision to stop supporting IE in older versions of Windows means that web developers will still have to support old versions of IE, while other browsers automatically update themselves.

[–]__circle 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I recently abandoned Firefox. Firefox is now the worst of all the browsers. So utterly slow and bloated.

[–]letslookfordinosaurs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Firefox is bloating

No, it's not.

[–]Barneyk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IE8 was OK, IE9 is good.

I still prefer Firefox over any other browser, I don't see how anyone who knows what they are talking about would call it bloated.

Chrome lacks so much to be a primary browser for me, not even being able to decide how I want to handle tabs is just silly.

Chrome does a few things better than Firefox, syncing and auto-HD on youtube being the 2 things that I wish I could do better in Firefox.

But if you dont care that much about customization, I see no problem with Chrome.

[–]etruscan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chrome is totally extensible. You can customize the hell out of it. I don't - and have never really understood the allure of add-ons - but you can.

[–]Barneyk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can to a degree, but not even close to what you can with Firefox.

As I said, you can't even decide how you want the tabs to be handled. Among several other things I noticed when I switched for a while when I was using my laptop a lot and needed better syncing than was available in firefox without add-ons at the time.

[–]etruscan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What do you need to do with tabs that you can't in Chrome? You can reorganize them, duplicate them, reopen accidentally closed tabs, pin them, pull them out to a new window - and if that's not enough...

[–]Barneyk -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Decide how I want to do it.

The problem I ran into was opening link tabs and search tabs in the background.

But there also was a lot of other tab behavior that Chrome was not able to do.

And it is not something I "need", it is something I like and that I am used to since Firefox 3. And it's just one of the examples of how Firefox is better when it comes to customization.

I don't really get what are you arguing and why?

[–]etruscan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not arguing, really. Just trying to understand. :)

One does not forgive IE6 that easily. When that iteration is finally eradicated from the surface of the earth, only then can we start the long road to recovery.

[–]Barneyk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IE6 broke a lot of standards, but we also have IE6 to thank for the modern web. A lot of the standards it broke and/or disregarded is what enabled a lot of the more interactive web standards we have today. For example.

What other browser did you prefer when IE6 was released?

The thing is it stuck around WAY to long, talk about overstaying your welcome. :)

[–]methoxeta 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. My work requires it. It loads and displays pages just as quickly as chrome, and feels great. The only downside is not having all my chrome bookmarks, and add-ons. The only flaw I can tell of is it takes a little bit longer to open a new tab than Chrome. Overall a great browser.

My computer is a family computer (I'm 17, still living with parents), and my parents hate change. I decided 'screw it, I'll use Internet Explorer' and thought 'huh? Why is this considered bad on reddit?'. I tried google chrome a while ago and prefer that (yes, I've made the switch), but I don't think IE was THAT bad.

[–]Jaleth 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel the same way, though I still use Chrome at home and either Firefox or IE at work, depending on whether I need to.

Is it just me or has Microsoft been getting better with their products since 10-15 years ago? Not necessarily everything (I still dislike the Office ribbon, for one), but I don't seem to think of them as quite the heinously evil behemoth that they used to be.

[–]methoxeta 0 points1 point ago

[–]Jaleth 0 points1 point ago

Seems you didn't take away my meaning. I'm not angry that they've been taking the lessons from their past problems and making improvements. I don't need to hate Microsoft and the direction they've been going has been pretty positive.

[–]methoxeta 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty sure all companies at least attempt to be "pretty positive". No company is trying to seem negative. It's just they're fucking up. For example Apple is under fire right now for their patent bullshit.

The 'neither does Opera' excuse doesn't have much weight, considering the very small amount of users it has and that it might become the Facebook browser.

But I agree that it is good that Microsoft has managed to finally create a browser that doesn't make me feel like I have to do extra months of testing just to make something work on IE.

First you innovate, dominate the market then you get lazy and start bullying the industry. When competitors replace your stagnancy with new innovation, you litigate, after that fails, then you copy.

Actually, in South Korea, I'm obligated to use it: most websites work well only in Internet Explorer.

It isn't bad, but I kinda wish they would change some things like treating each tab like a separate window in the taskbar, the 3D look of the tabs, and user interaction.

Its speed is definitely top-notch, however.

I tried the new IE. And it does look really nice. My problem with it is its speed. Compared to chrome, pages seems to take forever to load. I think I has something to do with IE trying to load the entire page before I shows it to use, while chrome shows you as it loads. I know nothing about how internet works, but I remember hearing someone say something about that, and I definitively get that feeling.

You're not alone--I have this same experience. IE is slow to load and frequently hangs for seconds at a time. I have no plugins/addons installed.

It may be that our IT department botched something in the IE installation or patch management, but I always end up installing Chrome or Firefox on every machine I use to cut down on the frustration.

[–]noisymime 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's... Better, that's the kindest thing one can say about it. It's still slow (From a UI point of view, not just rendering), CSS3 isn't well supported and the add-on support is woeful.

[–]muffinmaster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no clue why you're being downvoted. All of this is true. Even though IE has definitely improved, it has never been up to date with the latest technologies (CSS3 transitions etc).

[–]robywar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True though that may be, most people using it are using it at work where they have to because some software was written specifically to use it, and due to that they cannot use the newer versions. Military bases, for example, are still mostly on IE7, though they're creeping slowly towards IE8.

Even the college my wife attends requires software that can't run on anything higher than IE8, so I can't even upgrade IE on my home computer.

MS kinda dug themselves into this hole when they fought to become the government/business standard. By being both required and different they have made sure they're very hard to migrate away from and it's biting them in the ass now.

[–]just_wrong 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just because they're better than the garbage that was IE up until that point doesn't mean it's good enough to compete with any of the other browsers.

What I don't get is why on earth people actually wants to use IE. Every other browser out there is superior, so why are people adamant in supporting the worst of the lot?

[–]my_bitches_love_me 1 point2 points ago

Since Chrome is decent, and uses the same rendering engine as Safari (Webkit), by extension Safari is also decent, at least on Macs, so I hear.

Because it is no-where near as bad as IE, and is better than FF for some things.

No, it doesn't suck at all.

You realize that Apple, before chrome was even a twinkle in google's eye, was helping fund webkit? Webkit is the rendering engine that safari also uses.

When I see these type of comics I feel really bad for Netscape Navigator because it's always left out.

It would be the equivalent of old grandad sitting in his rocking chair in the corner telling the children to stop fighting.

Every post or comic about web browsers.

Anyone remember the chart a while back that claimed to prove people who used IE were of a lower intelligence, but it all turned out to be made up. The actual lowest intelligence group are those that give a fuck about what web browser other people use.

Not that these posts aren't tedious but people who make websites care and it affects them in their daily work life. Similarly people who are forced to use out of date or inefficient programmes at work want to vent.

Oh don't be harsh on IE. Now that LeBron James has won the title, IE is alone in the worlds-most-hated circle.

I do not understand why some websites require you use IE for them to work.

Look, I'm not a huge fan of IE, but it doesn't deserve this kind of treatment.

IE is that friend that you made fun of in High School to try and be popular, only to meet them a few years later, where IE remembers all the cruel things you said, but gets that you wanted to hang out with the cool kids.

IE forgives you and just wanted for you to be happy, so took the higher moral ground and let you say all those things, see all those other browsers.

IE isn't bright, but is always there for you.

IE is like the bully that grew faster than everyone else - then as you get older, fighting and bullying became old hat, and people learned how to handle him verbally or otherwise...now he tries to reinvent himself as a more mature person.

Is this a joke? IE is actually one of the better browsers in the bunch. Chrome is actually the best browser now. IE is pretty good now...though its lack of add-in/extension support relegates it to my second most used browser. Firefox totally sucks now. Safari has always sucked. ...and Opera, are you fucking serious...Opera on the desktop has and always will be a joke. Whoever made this comic is a dildo.

[–]Beckneard -1 points0 points ago

You have no idea what you're talking about. IE 9 is much much better than the previous IEs and the gap between IE and other popular browsers is much smaller now however IE is still inferior to all of them. Also there's nothing really wrong with firefox.

ahhh, might want to give it another shot - perhaps something is awry with that particular install. Opera is pretty rock solid, I could see room for complaint potentially (not that I have any) but on basic browser use its pretty solid.

[–]Vorokar 4 points5 points ago

Huh. I use Opera, and youtube works fine. Pages load normally.

How long ago was that? Maybe it was a beta version or a linux install? Opera has worked right out of the box for me over 10 years.

One of the reasons why the IE experience is better over the years may indeed be because Microsoft has actually improved it. But for those users who don't do web development and are basing your opinions on your experience alone, it is also useful to understand that web developers for years have been developing workarounds and hacks to get around IE's deficiencies and lack of standards compliance. Break open the CSS of almost any web site that's been developed professionally and you'll inevitably see in the comments something like, "If IE9" or whatever and then code working around the fact that they actually still have to work around Internet Explorer.
