I suppose it's the ridiculous aura that the sheer amount of charisma and confidence that he has. He can wear whatever the fuck he wants and if you don't like it, well then. fuck you.

[–]Rayofpain 37 points38 points ago

everything i have learned about fashion up to this point has been for naught

[–]pinkytheunicorn 24 points25 points ago

Not really. Many who dress nicely need the additional swagger the clothing brings. Robert, however, brings his swag with him. His clothing is like putting a carpet on a racehorse; sure it might be a nice or ugly carpet, but what's awesome is the racehorse.

[–]JoeMoney333 22 points23 points ago

Why are you putting carpet on a horse?

[–]pinkytheunicorn 14 points15 points ago

Why is Robert Downey Jr. wearing that outfit? These are deep mysteries that may never be solved in our lifetime.

[–]neelshiv 13 points14 points ago

Although he is one of those dudes that makes style look effortless, that looks pretty shitty. To be completely fair, he may not be trying to look cool, but I have definitely seen people pull off that sort of look and do a much better job.

[–]klew3 14 points15 points ago

"Style is not wearing a pink knit tie with a camouflage shirt… it’s wearing it effortlessly." - Guerre

[–]Apollo7 27 points28 points ago

Robert Downey Jr. and Tony Stark have began to blur into one entity for me.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 9 points10 points ago

Well he's just been playing himself in those movies

[–]Crazy_Gweilo 6 points7 points ago

As well as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Sherlock Holmes, hell even when he's playing an Australian in blackface in Tropic Thunder, he's still playing himself.

But then he has the charisma to pull it off.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 1 point2 points ago

Like Michael Cera, except awesome

[–]cheshster 6 points7 points ago

Have begun to? You realize that except for the billionaire industrialist playboy aspect, RDJ basically is Tony Stark.

[–]Pseudophobic 0 points1 point ago

Wait until you start seeing Iron Man flying around.

[–]murphylawson 0 points1 point ago

Except Tony dresses like a middle schooler.

[–]Apollo7 0 points1 point ago

I suppose so. I really digged the Black Sabbath shirt he had on in Avengers, though.

[–]sqazm 51 points52 points ago

If this wasn't RDJ and instead it was some random mfa member, I'm sure we'd all point out how ridiculous it looks.

[–]Rayofpain 36 points37 points ago

...but it's not

that's the thing

fashion should cater to the person, not to the masses

we just happen to be very similar with each other here on reddit so our clothing reflects that. Unfortunately none of us are like RDJ

[–]sqazm 5 points6 points ago

The question was, "What do people think of the suit/shoes combo?"

[–]greatestbird 4 points5 points ago

a gun might be the most accurate, precise, flawless device, but if a blind man with parkinson's fires it, it will miss.

this carries over to fashion, the shoe/suit combo might look good on RDJ, it won't look good on neck beard sloucher.

[–]Rayofpain -1 points0 points ago

you are correct

[–]sqazm 0 points1 point ago

So what is your point?

[–]Rayofpain 3 points4 points ago

my point is that it is perfectly acceptable that robert downey jr can wear something and pull it off that (probably) none of us can

[–]LeEspion 0 points1 point ago

Thats because mfa caters to fashion and not style.

[–]cheshster 15 points16 points ago

Yeah, the lifts look slightly less ridiculous in sneakers than they do in dress shoes. I wish he'd just embrace it though, being short does not make him any less ridiculously awesome.

[–]IveGotAHadron 15 points16 points ago

He's not all that short though, he's 5'9".

[–]irishtexmex 18 points19 points ago

When you're surrounded by people who people who have "made it", they (the people who have made it) typically tend to be taller, exacerbating how short RDJ appears in comparison.

Not to mention those slightly-taller-than-the-average women are probably in heels a lot of the time as well.

[–]vancesmi 5 points6 points ago

That shot of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt where she has her legs spread way out so Brad looks taller comes to mind. And he's not exactly short at 5'11".

[–]audiodude12 16 points17 points ago

What's this about a photo of Angelina Jolie with her legs spread way out?

[–]cheshster 2 points3 points ago

I am not so sure about that, actually. This post talks a lot about how RDJ's height was compensated for in the Avengers, and at the end only half-jokingly suggests that every actor is either standing on a box or in a ditch at some point, in every movie.

[–]irishtexmex 1 point2 points ago

Not so sure about what? I think we're in agreement here.

EDIT: Realized I forgot part of my comment. lol. Thanks for indirectly pointing that out.

[–]orthopod 0 points1 point ago

I think that's with the help of some major elevator shoes. Look at these shoes he's wearing - the front has an angle not unlike a womens high heel shoe - doesn't have the same angle like a regular mans shoe.

[–]cheshster 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that too. He's a little bit on the short side, but still fairly average height. Oh well, I don't think bitching on reddit is going to make him stop wearing silly shoes.

[–]Mugtrees 7 points8 points ago

What exactly are lifts?

[–]cheshster 5 points6 points ago

Platform shoes, basically, meant to somewhat disguise the fact that they are making you taller. They rarely do so well.

[–]The_Real_JS[S] 4 points5 points ago

Certainly has some interesting shoes.

[–]Phazhadadaha 30 points31 points ago

It's Robert Downey Jr, he can wear anything and look good.

[–]CrawstonWaffle 17 points18 points ago

He's the ensemble jester and playboy. Of course he gets to wear something ostentatious.

[–]silentpoetry 6 points7 points ago

Confident people can pull off anything because you always know/feel they've done it on purpose. If someone meek were to wear it, it would just look like he didn't realize they don't go together and it would be made fun of. The attitude is the most important aspect of anything you wear.

I wish to have sexy times with that man no matter what he's wearing because it's not the first thing I notice about him. Most guys, clothes ARE the first thing you notice because their personalities aren't as big/sexy.

[–]lachoigin 3 points4 points ago

I really don't like when guys wear shoes like that with business/formal wear. I also just don't like those shoes in the first place.

[–]CopyX 2 points3 points ago

You can't pull it off. Don't even try.

[–]cameronrgr 2 points3 points ago

what the fuck are those shoes?

[–]Sockin 11 points12 points ago

"Sir, I've explored what you asked me and it seems as there's a problem. To look that stylish, sir, that much swagger doesn't actually exist."

"Wait wait wait, the swagger? Here is the swagger, I've simply asked you to apply it to me."

"Alright we can try, but honestly it's impossible."

"Robert Downey Jr. wore that SUIT to a PREMIERE with that much SWAGGER!"

"I'm sorry sir, but you're not Robert Downey Jr."

[–]Squints753 9 points10 points ago

Loki looks the best out of all of them.

[–]kobiotdog 8 points9 points ago

Scarlet johansson looks the best

[–]LeEspion -2 points-1 points ago

I like how in all the fight scenes she didn't really kick as much ass as the other super heros, she was just there to bend her body into hot positions

[–]iLoginToComment 3 points4 points ago

love it. this needs a crosspost to /r/howtonotgiveafuck

[–]qaoqao 1 point2 points ago

God damn, only something he could wear.

[–]CPU1 1 point2 points ago

Please don't try it.

[–]abnerdude 1 point2 points ago

"Being good-looking and looking good are two different things, but both are equally effective."

If I can't look as good as RDJ, I can at least look good with what I wear.

[–]indy_res_hole 0 points1 point ago

First rule of fashion...

[–]Terza_Rima 0 points1 point ago

I really like it, but only on him. Because it's fucking Robert Downey Jr. And he has earned the ability to wear that and look good in it.

[–]iama842 0 points1 point ago

What shoes are those?

[–]cA05GfJ2K6 0 points1 point ago

If it wasn't him, then I'd say it's ridiculous. But it's fucking Robert Downey Jr.

[–]bettorworse 0 points1 point ago

He's heavily into drugs.

Haha! I know he's not (any more), right?

[–]MTDearing 0 points1 point ago

Oh Scarlett.

[–]TheI3east 0 points1 point ago

The bowtie makes it to be honest.

It turns an otherwise horrid outfit into a quirky, badass one.

[–]cocafonik -2 points-1 points ago

Looks dumb..
