I think it's hyperbole instead of literal.

He's exaggerating on purpose to make people think about it, because many religious people would rather not think about it. It doesn't literally make you an atheist, but it means you must see the value of logic and of the products of human society and science.

You can see all of that and still be a theist. I mean, I think people who interpret the bible literally, and believe all its stories actually happened, are opening themselves up to that kind of criticism.

But there are plenty of people who believe in a very standoffish "god the creator, who put everything in motion" kind of deity. Doesn't mean they're blind to science, logic, and reason. Really, it's a question of metaphysics that doesn't really have an obvious answer, which is why the vast majority of atheists are agnostics too.
