That's the streetcar in New Orleans, driving right past Tulane University. Awesome picture.

[–][deleted] 125 points126 points ago

Yep. One glance at that picture and I immediately thought "That's no train!"

[–]kreuelt 51 points52 points ago

It's not a space station either, so don't get any ideas.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

...wait. You mean that wasn't a space station I saw while driving through the city? Darn.

[–]ARCHA1C 12 points13 points ago

So-wait... Hold on.. Are you telling me... No... You can't mean that...

OP didn't take this picture!?

What has Reddit become!?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

To be fair, OP never claimed it as their favorite picture they took while on a tra-cough

THE HORROR! How could they? How do they live with themselves? tsk tsk

Thanks! Edited and fixed.

[–]senatorkneehi 21 points22 points ago

Are you sure that's Tulane? It looks a little further up St. Charles, just before Loyola/Audubon.

[–]heyyall13 12 points13 points ago

It kind of looks like the president of Tulane's house (Scott Cowen). It's right off of campus on Audubon Place (or the other private street next to it). But there are quite a lot of houses like that so who knows. It doesn't look like any on campus buildings, though. EDIT: Audubon Place, not Audubon Dr.

[–]isthisbatcountry 12 points13 points ago

After investigating Google Earth for some time I believe that it is the large house on the corner of St. Charles and Audubon Place coming from Broadway. Looking from street view going in the right direction I believe I am correct, the pictures have many similarities like the arch and vertical windows on top of them. http://imgur.com/2uTfE have a look for yourself and tell me what you think. Thanks! EDIT: That is the President's house, I think

[–]heyyall13 8 points9 points ago

YES! That is the house I was thinking of, and is definitely the president's house. I should have thought of Google Earth as well, I almost got in my car and drove over there, silly me. I have a lot of learning to do before I become a full-fledged internet detective.

Here is a nola.com article about it being the president's house. http://blog.nola.com/insideout/2007/11/the_presidents_residence.html

[–]ilovejenkum 2 points3 points ago

It looks like Dinwiddie Hall and Gibson Hall. I walked that many-a-times on my way to Audubon... far, far too many times. Link to campus map: http://tulane.edu/about/visiting/uptown-campus-map.cfm/

Edit: I'm wrong, it was taken right at the intersection of St. Charles and Newcomb Blvd. Google Maps street view is fucking awesome.

[–]heyyall13 1 point2 points ago

Dinwiddie Hall is at least 4 stories, and from what I can tell this is a three story house. This picture sucks, but it's the only one I could find from the same side that I think this picture was taken. http://www.flickr.com/photos/akjordan/55411023/

It stands out to me because every time I pass the house I notice the servants' entrance on the left hand side (when you're facing it), and it seems you can see it in this picture.

[–]YOalejandro 0 points1 point ago

The easy way to tell that it's not his house is because the yard on the left of the house is blocked from the street by trees, not bushes like in this picture.

[–]blindingblur 2 points3 points ago

I really wish I would have recognized this. Seeing as i live there :\ awesome observation

[–]botlove 2 points3 points ago

New Orleanian here. I was in correspondance with the photographer, Don Chamblee, because a friend of mine spotted it and insisted that the young couple was my husband and I. I'll admit, I was 95% convinced it was us...maybe from a day we didn't remember. I even sent it to several of my friends and family members to get their opinions (most of them thought it could be us). Alas, Don sent me some more pictures of the couple, and it wasn't us at all. The friend who originally spotted it wanted to re-create the photo with us in it, but we never did it.

[–]teeksteeks 4 points5 points ago

I just went back to the picture to see if I thought it was you and realized I have no clue who you are.

[–]sshim317[S] 29 points30 points ago

Ah really? Thank you for telling me, wish I didn't put train in the title! And nice find!

[–]RewindHoodie 25 points26 points ago

[–]FallingSky1 6 points7 points ago

It can still be his favorite picture even if it was posted before.

[–]sshim317[S] 4 points5 points ago

Nice find to you actually! I had no idea!

[–]powderdd 50 points51 points ago

Nice finds all around!

[–]gfixler 2 points3 points ago

I just found this! Nice!

[–]BallsToTheWall84 17 points18 points ago

Legendary repost

[–]abw1987 4 points5 points ago

It's OK; a streetcar is a train.

[–]unusedalias 1 point2 points ago

I was going to tell you, "That's no train. That's a streetcar in NOLA."

[–]SkillEditor 1 point2 points ago

+1 Observation

[–]NonSequiturEdit 1 point2 points ago

This is my favorite type of reddit comment. It adds to the original post and closes with a compliment. Good show.

[–]bareju 1 point2 points ago

Not only was OP wrong, but I've seen this posted probably 6-7 times. Still an awesome picture though.

[–]AverageBum 1 point2 points ago

I feel like such a real reddit detective by recognizing the interior of a NOLA streetcar and the surroundings.

[–]KSMO 2 points3 points ago

After the large campus expansion project is completed in 2014, Tulane University will be known as Fourlane University.

[–]Oorangelazarus 1 point2 points ago

It'll swallow Loyola. No one likes us :(.

[–]kidneysforsale 1 point2 points ago

Haha I really hope we do.

[–]yankeeairpirate 1 point2 points ago

I like it.

[–]downvotemichael 0 points1 point ago

Aww god damn, I came here to post that.

[–]crash_over-ride 0 points1 point ago

as soon as I saw it I knew it was St. Charles Ave between Tulane and Downtown.

[–]the_merk 0 points1 point ago

new orleans was my first thought. very cool.

[–]lousyshot55 0 points1 point ago

I was gonna be irritated that someone had posted the answer before me but then I saw they had answered it better than I would have so have an upvote.

I have family getting married down there ALL the time so I know that area well and actually spent an afternoon riding the cable car with camera trying to get some sweet pictures :P

[–]KonigSteve 0 points1 point ago

I specifically opened the comments to say "St Charles!"

[–]HisRoyalHiney 0 points1 point ago

I live a block away from this on Calhoun st. I didn't even notice this. I'm a space retard.

[–]quasarj 0 points1 point ago

It's an interesting experience looking at a picture like this and thinking "hey I've been there! on that street car!"

(well, probably not that street car, but still.)

[–]bfrantz 0 points1 point ago

thought the same thing, came here to confirm that :)

[–]mrpopenfresh 0 points1 point ago

I was gonna say that there is no way in hell a train would have wooden seats.

[–]tekmonkey 0 points1 point ago

Recognized it immediately from the scene in "Runaway Jury"

[–]tokuturfey 26 points27 points ago

That guy needs to clean his camera's sensor badly.

[–]leo1016 9 points10 points ago

Or the internal glass needs to be cleaned on his lens.

[–]afdlips 4 points5 points ago

That's sensor dust for sure.

[–]David722 2 points3 points ago

How can you tell?

[–]afdlips 2 points3 points ago

Sensor dust is very sharp as it is directly on the sensor. You see it at f/ 8 and above usually. I would imagine this shot was done at around f/18 or higher to create that blur. I've been dealing with dusty sensors lately and this is what it looks like. I bought some expensive dust swabs and took care of it. no more specks.

[–]leo1016 0 points1 point ago

I have a 1D MKII and the same problem happened. Ended up cleaning the sensor but the specks remained. Turned out it was my lens.

So, OP, it could be 1 of 2 things, your lens or sensor. Clean your sensor first as its the most inexpensive. The lens might need to be taken in for a professional clean (taken completely apart and put back together) as mine was.

Great picture BTW.

[–]temudgin 1 point2 points ago

how do you know someone has a 1d? they'll tell you.

[–]mashingthekeys 2 points3 points ago

Too sharp to be on the lens.

[–]dr_root 32 points33 points ago

What are your other favorites?

[–]FECAL_ATTRACTION 4 points5 points ago

Strangers on a Train.

Never said we couldn't include motion pictures! Foiled!

[–]Nabana 9 points10 points ago

TIL there's a lot of other New Orleanians on Reddit. I graduated from Tulane in 2000.

[–]Jensaarai 2 points3 points ago

[–]Oorangelazarus 1 point2 points ago

Every time I see something New Orleans related on reddit, I immediately go to the comments. NOLA representin'

[–]_shadrach_ 10 points11 points ago

This reminds me of one of my favorite paintings

[–]leafssuck 8 points9 points ago

That's a painting? Jesus.

[–]exaltedbladder 2 points3 points ago

Found it

Didn't believe it was a painting at first as well haha.

[–]abagofdicks 1 point2 points ago

Yes, painted by Jesus

[–]coleosis1414 3 points4 points ago

O.o

[–]piratazephyri 1 point2 points ago

That's a painting?!

[–]graemegreen 0 points1 point ago

what's this painting called?

[–]_shadrach_ 1 point2 points ago

The Plaza, by Richard Estes. If you google him you'll see he's pretty talented.

[–]Cyphus 88 points89 points ago

If you could explain relativity in one picture, this would be it.

[–]DrunkenAss 87 points88 points ago

Or shutter speed.

[–]brightbluesky55 4 points5 points ago

Was this pic taken using a slow shutter speed? If so, how was the photographer able to take such a steady shot?

[–]thenicolai 11 points12 points ago

The fact that you can still make out the shapes of the houses outside indicate that it wasn't a super show shutter speed. Probably a fraction of a second, but combined with the speed of the car it was enough to blur the outside while still keeping the people inside pretty still.

[–]stellareddit 5 points6 points ago

Right, I'm guessing it's about a 1/10 to 1/20 second exposure. Anything longer would have had a lot more camera shake and blurring of the people inside.

[–]WhipIash 6 points7 points ago

You can actually see the closest girl moved her head slightly.

[–]hlep 0 points1 point ago

It really depends on the lens, the canon L series lenses for example have really good stabilization in them which makes you able to take pictures at pretty low shutter speeds. But I would say it's not a 1/10, but it's really hard to tell without knowing what lens was used.

[–]enterharry 4 points5 points ago

tripod?

[–]autieab 2 points3 points ago

Vibration of the trolley car would still induce blur through the legs of the tripod, surely?

[–]Bob3333 3 points4 points ago

Except the tripod would vibrate with the car and its contents, thus they would appear still from the camera's frame of reference.

[–]WhipIash 1 point2 points ago

Also, how the hell do you set up a tripod on the middle of a moving train's window?

[–]caltheon 0 points1 point ago

Easy enough with a mini tripod with flexible legs, or a clamp.

[–]DrunkenAss 3 points4 points ago

It's not that steady, the people on the right are a little blurry, and yeah I think it was a slow shutter speed. I'm not a photographer though.

[–]Ares__ 1 point2 points ago

rest it on something... maybe one of those mini tripods

[–]richie9x 0 points1 point ago

To get motion blur like that you would need a slow shutter. But I expect not too slow as you would get too much motion blur from people moving. Maybe a half a second or a second.

Looks like the camera was resting on the window. Photographer may have even had some sort of mini tripod or a clamp with a camera mount.

[–]TeHSaNdMaNS 9 points10 points ago

Are you saying either or, or are you saying that it's a demonstration of shutter speed and not relativity?

[–]functor7 9 points10 points ago

Inertial frames of reference. Not relativity.

[–]Melchoir 4 points5 points ago

Yep. Loosely speaking, the picture demonstrates that speed is relative; it depends on one's frame of reference. But we've known that for centuries, and we don't call the concept "relativity". Relativity is the more startling observation that some things aren't relative.

[–]functor7 1 point2 points ago

Relativity is a very poor name for the theory, people misunderstand it's meaning all the time. 'Cause although trivial things like wavelength and time are dependent on the frame, the fact that c is constant with respect to frames is the fundamental property.

[–]Gengar11 0 points1 point ago

I think this video is the one I was looking for that basically sums up what your saying.

[–]DrJimmyRustler 7 points8 points ago

Ah yes, this classic type of title to justify submitting something that has been reposted like a thousand times. Nice work

[–]blob-dob-11 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, fuck him for sharing a picture he likes on a website made for that specific purpose.

[–]redditlubber 9 points10 points ago

Warp speed.

[–]theGreatBlar 2 points3 points ago

This reminds me of a pic much like this one called 'contrast'

[–]usernameblank 2 points3 points ago

I do believe you are referring to this one.

[–]A_Moist_Towelette 2 points3 points ago

Did this really need to be reposted?

[–]kcman011 4 points5 points ago

As someone who periodically gets motion sickness, I got a little sick to my stomach just looking at the left hand of the pic.

[–]I_YELL_RANDOM_THINGS 4 points5 points ago

ITS NOT THE SAME DUMBLEDORE IN ALL 8 MOVIES

[–]peteisadrunkprophet 0 points1 point ago

I read your username. And my "what?" was answered

[–]ghostysound 4 points5 points ago

Repost from a long ass time ago

[–]inuyome1008 1 point2 points ago

Repost from this past week.

[–]melatone 1 point2 points ago

A good pretext to bring up Michel Gondry's music video for the Chemical Brothers' "Star Guitar," the coolest thing ever shot from a train window: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S43IwBF0uM

[–]faint7 0 points1 point ago

Video still blows my mind.

[–]RyderJ 1 point2 points ago

I used to take that streetcar every day going to school at Loyola. It was always the nicest part of a long sweltering day, sitting near the window and cooling off with the only breeze you're likely to feel in this city.

[–]probablypantless 1 point2 points ago

Always nice to see other Loyola alums. c/o 2004 here. I miss Nawlins.

[–]Oorangelazarus 1 point2 points ago

2013 here. We miss you too.

[–]TallCaucasianGuy 1 point2 points ago

St. Charles street car is awesome... if you can get on to it when it's not insanely crowded.

[–]DominicDom 1 point2 points ago

This type of long exposure photography looks great in /r/exposureporn

[–]oshen 1 point2 points ago

man these names are getting awkward when you want to forward the link to people irl.

[–]zorak303 1 point2 points ago

I have a drunken video of my daily streetcar ride home. I always take it for granted, thanks for posting.

[–]g3tyasum 1 point2 points ago

Relativity is beautiful

[–]WhipIash 0 points1 point ago

No, slow shutterspeed combined with a steady camera is beautiful.

[–]mjmax 1 point2 points ago

The last time this reached the front page on Reddit, I mentioned that it looked like it would be cool in a physics book trying to demonstrate relativity.

[–]io_di 1 point2 points ago

I know that couple o___O

When did you make this?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]CBoggs 1 point2 points ago

That's not a train. I grew up riding that street car in NOLA.

[–]ToulouseMaster 1 point2 points ago

That's no train, that's a Tram!

[–]ZuFFuLuZ 0 points1 point ago

Read that in Admiral Ackbar's voice.

[–]theangrypenguin 1 point2 points ago

That lens is filthy.

[–]dingdongrb 1 point2 points ago

...and that girl sitting in that one seat is my sister....... holy cow!

[–]EVARB_OS 1 point2 points ago

Look at that douchebag putting his arm around that girls shoulder. What a douche.

[–]TallRedditor 1 point2 points ago

[–]twyphoon 1 point2 points ago

The perfect picture to illustrate that planes, cars, trains, etc. are real life space-time machines.

[–]afdlips 1 point2 points ago

Jesus. SENSOR DUST!

[–]Every1AChampion 1 point2 points ago

New Orleans, representing! I love my hometown and I love St. Charles Avenue! Great pic! I go to Tulane and it looks like the area between Tulane and Loyola...HUGE mansions! Love it!

[–]xogun 1 point2 points ago

Einstein would be pleased with this picture. Relatively speaking, of course.

[–]shadowq8 1 point2 points ago

I think reddit works in cycles. Every 2 months a groups of redditors browse everything on reddit then disappear then a group comes back and views what they have missed in those 2 months..

this is the only explanation as to why this picture must have been reposted at least a million times.

[–]mocotazo 0 points1 point ago

Loved people-watching whenever I rode the streetcar home from work.

[–]xHassassin 0 points1 point ago

Hmm, I wonder what it'll look like if you composited it? Two shots, one long shutter one short so the right side is more in focus?

Seems like a cool idea. Great shot nevertheless.

[–]corgirtor_ergirtor 0 points1 point ago

moVdo - talk about relevant URLs.

[–]dave_felix 0 points1 point ago

Misleading title, thought a train took the photo

[–]willief 0 points1 point ago

[–]tkmoney 0 points1 point ago

[–]effinmetal 0 points1 point ago

NOLA streetcar? Awesome.

[–]ElSnaibs 0 points1 point ago

I counter your photo with a "still exterior/moving train" that I took in NY about 6 or 7 years ago. Blam!

[–]varukasalt 0 points1 point ago

Should be titled "Relativity"

[–]redstickmoto 0 points1 point ago

I ride those fuckers everyday.

[–]MChainsaw 0 points1 point ago

This is a great representation of relative motion. Is the car moving or the rest of the world? The camera sure has it's own opinion on the matter. Can you really say it's lying?

[–]alienartifact 0 points1 point ago

"FUCK, that is fucking awesome" my instant reaction.

[–]smirfy8473 0 points1 point ago

oh man warp drive almost made me sea sick

[–]AdviCeSC2 0 points1 point ago

Cool picture, are you a professional?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Einstein was right, time is relative. :)-

[–]LongDanglingDongKok 0 points1 point ago

That's certainly the best picture from a train I've seen today.

[–]Zzaproot 0 points1 point ago

Looks like they're riding Blaine the Mono.

[–]G0VERNMENT 0 points1 point ago

This needs to be in a physics text book in the section about relativity.

[–]EmeraldKiss 0 points1 point ago

Did I just enter ..............................the matrix??

[–]Decivell 0 points1 point ago

When I saw this, I literally yelled out, "TO THE FUTURE!!!"

[–]justanormalguy01 0 points1 point ago

[–]Izbickiskater 0 points1 point ago

If you turn the shutter speed up on your camera to 2000/1 both sides would have been crystal clear HD with no motion blur, just sayin.

[–]DeathByFarts 0 points1 point ago

I dont think the word train means what you think it means.

[–]kingofnarnia 0 points1 point ago

how the fuck did they take this photo???

I was on this streetcar back in about 2006 when some joker made a left turn in front of us and we totally his Ford Expedition. That streetcar bounce up in the air about an inch. Those things must just weigh a ton.
