I expected to see a movie that followed the basic premise of Abraham Lincoln being a vampire hunter. The movie delivered.

[–]metarugia 3 points4 points ago

And yet so many critics were confused when they got what the title described. In fact, even had there not been a book, I feel like pitching this movie idea to a studio was as simple as just saying the title.

I thought it was awesome. Came in with no expectations.

[–]droideka9990 56 points57 points ago

9.5/10, would watch again.

[–]BLACKdrew 62 points63 points ago

The man threw horses.HORSES!

[–]Average_Joke 27 points28 points ago

I thought it was awesome, but the ending could've been so much better. Somewhere along the line, after he had defeated the bad guys, Abe should've been bitten by a vampire himself. He's still a good vampire, and has accepted his curse. But, there's a new, rookie, vampire hunter on the lookout, who knows what Abe is, but not that Lincoln is still a good dude. That hunters name? John Wilkes Booth.

[–]OccamsCat 20 points21 points ago

In the book, John Wilkes Booth is a vampire.

[–]Average_Joke 9 points10 points ago

Damnit, I knew I should've finished the book.

[–]kentathon 0 points1 point ago

Yeah the book ending shows a lot more after the part where the movie ends. I listened to the audio book one day at work since I didn't expect to see the movie. I wonder why they took out the books ending.

[–]DontPanicJustDance 4 points5 points ago

John Wilkes Booth: Vampire Hunter Hunter

[–]MooCwzRck 8 points9 points ago

More like: John Wilkes Booth: Vampire Vampire Hunter Hunter

[–]ajkkjjk52 8 points9 points ago

Exactly. Don't take it seriously and it's a ton of fun.

[–]metarugia 0 points1 point ago

I laughed at all the people who didn't realize it was a book first.

[–]Red_AtNight -4 points-3 points ago

The movie took itself too seriously for me to not take it seriously.

[–]Black_Ash_Heir 12 points13 points ago

I think the fact that it took itself so seriously made it not serious. I mean, it's fucking called "Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." I think the best way to pull off that title was deadpan.

[–]Caidan44 4 points5 points ago

Considering it came from the author of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, what did people expect? It was a good film.

[–]Marshm3llo12 2 points3 points ago

i loved it. i mean its vampires. and these ones DIDDNT HAVE ANY SPARKELS

[–]lmnopqrs11 16 points17 points ago

did someone say, SPARKLES!? (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ SPARKLES!

(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ SPARKLES!

(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ SPARKLES!

[–]justwtf 1 point2 points ago

Disappointed to see your username wasn't SPARKLES!

[–]Sparkles_ 2 points3 points ago

Sparkles, checking in.

[–]UnexpectedSchism 3 points4 points ago

I thought it was awesome, coming in knowing it was awesome.

Anyone with high expectations would have been happy leaving the theater.

[–]faschr4023 0 points1 point ago

I just watched abe Lincoln vs zombies. $1 redbox movie funny as hell because of the cheap budget

[–]CoyoteStark 28 points29 points ago

It's pretty cool how they actually had film from the Battle of Gettysburg.

[–]smokeyjoe223 2 points3 points ago

Shit, now I'm going to have to watch this movie.

[–]puffyarreolas 31 points32 points ago

My favorite scene was the tree. The fact that Abraham goes from chipping bark to the whole trunk just exploding.

[–]yascha 23 points24 points ago

It's the power of truth my good man.

[–]TheKeggles 4 points5 points ago

"I want you to cut down the tree in one swing..."

8 swings later 'BOOM' explosive tree

[–]xseanathonx 13 points14 points ago

[–]thatweirdo 3 points4 points ago

What the fuck man?

[–]coggearred 7 points8 points ago

well, what did you expect?

[–]MrJDMTyte 4 points5 points ago

I'm not sure what I was expecting.

[–]immaturewalrus 2 points3 points ago

I was expecting a subreddit filled with what might be called "dead dove" incidents, one being like this movie. Its a good concept, I was excited for a second.

[–]swmnln4 15 points16 points ago

This explains my reaction PERFECTLY. The movie was just ridiculous. An awesome and stupid ridiculousness that I may buy when it hits DVD

[–]QuadsNotBlades 13 points14 points ago

I was blown away by the ax fighting scenes.. visually, the horse battle and the train were utterly badass

[–]crazyasiantom179 13 points14 points ago

That movie was FUCKING AWESOME

[–]evil_monk 13 points14 points ago

I decided to read the book first.

[–]gab12gage 3 points4 points ago

so did my dad and I, movie was quite disappointing

[–]indyK1ng 3 points4 points ago

The movie was basically more like what I expected the book to be. Let's face it, some books just don't translate well into movies. I feel that while the movie could have kept closer to the book, it just wouldn't have been so good. Same thing with Starship Troopers, if they'd tried to make that movie any more like the book, it would have been boring and incredibly dry but instead they made a movie that's going to be enjoyable. Same with this, the book just wouldn't have translated that well into a movie imo.

[–]gab12gage 2 points3 points ago

It probably was a good movie for those that hadn't read the book, but it's almost like they didn't even try to stay close to the book

[–]indyK1ng 5 points6 points ago

The scriptwriter (who is the book's author) apparently made some changes to make the story easier to translate to film and also add some action. Where the book showed the author's research work, the movie was clearly made to have a more traditional action bent. Let's face it, the third act of the movie would have bored people if Lincoln had stopped hunting and Mary Todd Lincoln never got her revenge.

[–]gab12gage 3 points4 points ago

True, act 3 would have bored people but, the things I loved most from the book were left out, such as how Abe meets Henry, Henry's quote "some people are too interesting to kill/ judge us not equally", Abe meeting Edgar allen Poe, Abe meeting jack Armstrong, and the ending from the book which I won't spoil for those still interested in reading

[–]indyK1ng 0 points1 point ago

Again, those things make for nice reading, and changing the reveal that Henry was a vampire wasted time, but all of the character development and historical figures met would fit better in a miniseries where the expectations are different. I honestly think the general public would have scoffed if they saw a film much truer to the book.

[–]evil_monk -1 points0 points ago

That's not good. I would like to see it after the book just to see how bad it is.

[–]gab12gage 6 points7 points ago

let me put it this way, book content made up about 30 minutes of the whole movie

[–]GoldenCorno 5 points6 points ago

But you know you can't come in with any expectations from the book.... Just look at everything that was written first. Harry Potter, LoTR, (I'm too drunk to think of anything else...) you have to come in thinking "Let's watch this movie for the amazingly epic action scenes.". Maybe there were some scenes that needed work, but overall I concluded that it was pretty fucking epic.

[–]Grantonius -4 points-3 points ago

It was like they had seen the cover of the book and said. Hey! That's a great idea, let's make a movie with the same name.

[–]indyK1ng 5 points6 points ago

Except the guy who wrote the book wrote the movie script.

[–]Grantonius -1 points0 points ago

Amnesia, he clearly must have forgotten that he had ever written the book.

[–]GandTforme 2 points3 points ago

Is somebody watching it expecting it to instead be "Miss Congeniality 3: Isn't Sandra Bullock Pretty?"

[–]Honeydippedsalmon 2 points3 points ago

I really liked it but started dozing off towards the end. It was some insane mix of boring and awesome. I hope they make a JFK Vampire Hunter.

[–]publius4 2 points3 points ago

This could lead to a whole new assassination conspiracy.

[–]leet_hacksaw 1 point2 points ago

[–]bfshins 3 points4 points ago

He's the only anti-vampire candidate. Lincoln 2012.

[–]CoolMcDouche 1 point2 points ago

How the fuck does this picture get upvoted to the frontpage like 20 times..

[–]canadianwombat 0 points1 point ago

you felt that you watched a movie about a vampire hunter?

[–]omnilynx 1 point2 points ago

Not just any vampire hunter.

[–]canadianwombat 2 points3 points ago

surely not abe lincoln?!?!

[–]Shiftkgb 0 points1 point ago

It was entertaining but I was hoping it was going to be a more personal story. Like him getting names in the mail every few months or something while studying law or something would have been perfect. Oh well.

The train scene really pulled me out of it though.

[–]Scup 0 points1 point ago

The fight scenes were really cool, but the story was meh.

[–]revjeremyduncan 0 points1 point ago

I really enjoyed the book. I can't wait to see the movie.

[–]nicoman37 0 points1 point ago

I'm just gonna save my money and watch arrested development on netflix.

[–]CowboyNinjaD 0 points1 point ago

A thousand years from now, the archeologists and historians sifting through the remnants of our long-dead culture are going to find this film/book and think it's a factual portrayal of Abraham Lincoln. And that makes me very happy.

[–]AsesRado 0 points1 point ago

I would rather Theodore Roosevelt: Vampire Hunter. THAT would be a good story.

[–]Errday_Im_Hylian 0 points1 point ago

The book was fantastic, but I heard the movie sucked.

Read the book if you haven't.

[–]samfreez 0 points1 point ago

I laughed most of the way through this movie. It was amazing, and exactly what I was hoping it would be...

I now need to read the book.

I want to see more of this style though. Gimme Teddy Roosevelt, Werewolf Hunter... or Josef Stalin, Yeti Hunter or something!

[–]MrClownyBubbles 0 points1 point ago

I kinda figured it would be more of a joke or a parody, but no it was much better than expected

[–]aninnerglow 0 points1 point ago

Shame on you for seeing that movie.

[–]humfuzz 0 points1 point ago

sequel: Barack Obama: Zombie Slayer

[–]theFirs 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if this movie did above average in Ilinois, given that, while driving, we see the title character's face repeatedly. Familiarity breeds fondness.

[–]dats_faptastic 1 point2 points ago

What's your return policy?

[–]DishonestBystander 0 points1 point ago

But the vampires! They went out in the SUN!!!! It was all so wrong-ish.

[–]immaturewalrus 0 points1 point ago

Tell that to the new Skyrim vampires.

[–]DishonestBystander 0 points1 point ago

Before Dawnguard, the sanguine infection made you really weak in the sunlight. Did the dlc eliminate that?

[–]immaturewalrus 0 points1 point ago

No, it just deducts a lot of points from your magicka, stamina, and health. Regeneration is extremely slow as well. I thought pre-Dawnguard vamps actually got hurt from the sunlight?

[–]Magnificentmalee -4 points-3 points ago

wtf. All that came up was a bunch of codes and then what I was watching on my laptop froze and went red making beeping noises. dafuqq?
