If someone believes in a deity they are obviously not atheists even if they do stop for red lights and take their medication.

It could be argued that they should be atheist but thats a different argument.

I think this post is trying to say if you're a theist then you believe god protects you. (correct me if I'm wrong) but wouldn't that god make you stop the light for your safety?

Since I dont believe in fairy tales I cant really say what such a being would do if it existed.

This is getting posted daily. It gets dumber every time I read it.

It is exactly the lousy logic and theology you'd expect from a Koch sucking Cato Institute shill like Jillette.

This is my first and last time reading this quote.

In the past if a teenager or young adult had questions about their religion the only ones they could talk to was their parents or their pastors.

Now if a teenager or young adult has questions about their religion the hop on YouTube or Reddit.

Religion cannot survive in the free market of ideas.

If Youtube and Reddit are now carrying the reigns of our civilization, I'm terrified.

Who would have thought connecting all of humanity together would slowly destroy religion?

God damn, I use to wallow in self pity that I was born too late to see man walk on the moon and that the Earth was already pretty much explored. That I had somehow missed out on these great moments of humanity.

But you know what, I was born early enough that I remember what things were like before the internet and how they are now. The internet is the most culturally significant thing to happen since the invention of the automobile. And it's still new and crazy and we've just barely begun to see what it can do. It is both hive mind and the greatest tool for expressing individuality. It is a fucking box that we are told to fill and we see that everytime we add to it, it get bigger and bigger. It has no limit and thus we have no limit. There is good reason people freak the fuck out when companies or politicians try to limit it. That's what makes it so amazing. We can't journey out to infinity, so we created infinity here. Each piece evolves and expands.

So you're damn right we are carrying the reigns of civilization. It may be childish and chaotic at time but that is how we know it, like ourselves, still has such a long way to go. We missed the opening and I'd hate to see the end credits, but we just started a new act and might be the best one yet.

Yes, because trusting and confiding in someone you have known for years and whose opinion and morals you respect is stupid when you can talk to a random anonymous misinformed anti-religious zealot on the Internet.

[–]DefenestratorOfSouls 2 points3 points ago

Seriously? That's what you think? I don't even know how to approach this. Do you really think the flow of information and unbiased discussion was better when the only person you could ask for more information was the one who told you what you were curious about in the first place, versus a limitless pool of opinions and a device to verify the statements of all those opinions? Do I even need to point out that the availability of discussion on the internet in no way impedes your ability to raise these questions with your parents, but allows you to have multiple opinions in addition to the literally one you had before?

an idea itself isnt measured by its source

[–]BTAA4TD -1 points0 points ago

I'll take an idea by Martin Luther King Jr. You take an idea by Hitler. Then let's revisit your posit.

[–]mrMind 0 points1 point ago

I didnt say that every idea is good, but now i understand how you think, thank you....

[–]Traptin_85 2 points3 points ago

they don't because it is against the law, and apparently God doesn't always work with the police.

[–]cagg333 6 points7 points ago

This is retarded. This is flat out saying religious people can't be scientists, even though there are plenty. By the way, the pope has driven a car before. He's no atheist.

[–]natrlbornkiller 2 points3 points ago

I hope this is taken out of context some how it makes no sense at all. I've always liked Penn, I've seen a lot of his shows and I thought he was a smart guy. Making dumb blanket statements is something religions do.

[–]Decitron 4 points5 points ago

this is too stupid for words. even these ones.

[–]Dwemeri 3 points4 points ago

I've always disagreed with this sentiment. Not everyone believes that their god answers all prayers in the affirmative, or will protect everyone regardless of their disregard for consequences.

[–]RepostThatShit 1 point2 points ago

What if you believe in a god who never promised to not stop other cars for you when you run a red light? Because I'm pretty sure that includes... every religion.

[–]Dyolf_Knip 1 point2 points ago

"Atheists"? Not so much. But it definitely proves the lie to anyone who says shit like "With faith, all things are possible". They claim to believe the creator of everything is in their corner watching out for them, but then actually act as though it's a cruel and indifferent universe.

One of my favorite articles: http://www.examiner.com/article/when-faith-kills

It is irresponsible to teach that the reality we live in is one where miracles can happen, where faith can move mountains, where prayers are answered, and then with a quiet shrug know that actually behaving this way would be insane.

[–]yukonblond 1 point2 points ago

Anyone else think this is illogical and not worth repeating?

[–]ScottFree37 0 points1 point ago

I refuted reasonably once. Refuted angrily the second time. Now I've given up and wondering why I don't just unsubscribe.

Seriously, guys? This clearly isn't meant to be taken literally; he's just pointing out that most religious people don't act like they believe their religion in their day to day life at all. People will say they believe in the power of prayer, but they still take medicine when they get sick, because at the heart of it, they realize prayer isn't as real as medicine is. He's getting at the idea that even religious people, though they wont admit it outright, think of God as less real than actual people they can actually talk to.

[–]zibzub 0 points1 point ago

There are places where people believe in fatalism (whatever happens happens) and don't wear their seatbelts and die because of it all the time.

Also, did Penn actually use "putten" as the past tense of "put"?

[–]BTAA4TD 0 points1 point ago

Spoken like someone who has no comprehension of religion whatsoever.

[–]wazzym 0 points1 point ago

You can still be a deist!
