Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

I don't understand. What does this represent?

[–]BrainSlurper 19 points20 points ago

Pirates piss off the DRM and the paying customer gets hurt?

[–]mama_llama 11 points12 points ago

DRM is basically some thing that is used to prevent people from pirating things, but usually the pirates just work around it and still get things for free, while the people who actually payed for the things have to suffer from DRM.

EDIT: Why are people downvoting Isatis_tinctoria because they didn't understand the gif?

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 4 points5 points ago

So, is DRM law or a set of barriers, like firewall, preventing people from downloading things illegally?

[–]blazedaces 4 points5 points ago

A set of barriers placed by the manufacturer. It's originally intended purpose is to stop people from copying or "abusing" copyright. What ends up happening though is pirates know easy ways to get around them, so normal paying customers just get shafted. For example, not allowing you to back up a song or movie like you may smartly do as a precautionary measure.

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 2 points3 points ago

So, the pirates are making things worse for people who pay?

Easy ways? I'm thinking they just guess a bunch of codes and that probably takes a long time.

[–]RealityRush 1 point2 points ago

Easy ways as in all they have to do is torrent the game from the Pirate Bay and after changing a few files as per the instructions included in a .txt file with the download they can play, that simple.

Also, no, pirates are not making it worse for people that pay. There will always be people that abuse every system, that isn't a good reason for those that control the system to screw everyone else over trying to stop them when they know it isn't possible to do so. For every intelligent and creative programming security guru, there is hundreds of hackers to get around whatever he can do. It's a waste of time to try and prevent it.

People abuse Canada's free universal healthcare, that doesn't mean the government should start finding ways to make it harder to use the system because you'd piss a lot of people off that actually need it.

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 0 points1 point ago

That is interesting. I thought you had to be well versed in computers to do such things.

Have you ever played Civ III?

[–]RealityRush 1 point2 points ago

Na, anyone can get around DRM with just a little bit of smarts and Google :P

And yes, I've played Civ III. Why do you ask?

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 0 points1 point ago

I was wondering if you knw where I could procure one. I have bought four copies, but they are all for pc, and I have a mac...

[–]mama_llama 1 point2 points ago

Yes, pretty much. Things such as making some one get an account on their game playing software, like Steam or Origin or it won't let you play/install the game. Also, putting in a code when installing the game. The code found on the physical copy of the game (some where in the booklet). So, if you're a paying customer and you lost the game's booklet, you will have to either find a code online or never play your game that you payed money for.

You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management#Computer_games

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 2 points3 points ago

So, wait, how do Pirates get around this? I don't understand. Do they just guess a bunch of codes?

[–]jsn0x 2 points3 points ago

A purely hypothetical scenario here... Someone used to use Napster. They charge a subscription fee every month so the customer can listen to/download the music. Napster has DRM protection on every music file you download from them, so once your month subscription is up you can't play your music... on your computer or on any device. It also prevents you from using your device on a lot of players and mp3 players. Then come along the hypothetical pirates and they develop Tunebite... a program that plays your music at hyperspeed and digitally records it to a mp3 file free of DRM protection.

Pirates get the MP3's and paying customers get a shitty DRM protected file that doesn't work on half the stuff you want it to.

And a hypothetical ending to my hypothetical story would be someone using Replay Music to record Pandora and Youtube to MP3's and have their info automatically entered instead of paying for Napster.

Gosh I wish I was a pirate... they always do the cool stuff.

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 0 points1 point ago

I guess you could put a video recorder next to a computer and have it record a youtube video.

[–]jsn0x 0 points1 point ago

[–]LaughterIsTheBestMed 0 points1 point ago

You wish you were a pirate? Stop wishing and join us, damnit.

[–]mama_llama 1 point2 points ago

Pirates download a file (typically a .iso file) that copies the game disc, and then they use a program to trick their computer into thinking they put the disc in (a good example is http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/downloads). This "tricking" is using the program to do some thing called "mounting" the file. This makes the computer think that you put in the disc. Then, you go to your Computer (sorry if this is different on Mac, I use a PC) and in your disc drives, you double click and start your setup. When it asks for the code that I talked about, you Google around for a code (or use a code generator called a keygen) and copy and paste it into your installation.

After it installs, you use some thing called a crack. The crack is usually included in the installation. It basically is the "bunch of codes" that makes the game work. You drag the crack into the game's folder (usually a folder called "bin") and it replaces the game's original files of the same name.

That should usually work, but some games have different DRM that requires more things. The instructions are usually outlined in the download.

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 2 points3 points ago

It seems like it requires a great deal of finesse.

I have a mac, but I'm familiar with a PC.

Is this illegal?

It seems this court case allows for some leeway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Galoob_Toys,_Inc._v._Nintendo_of_America,_Inc.

Have you ever played Civ III?

[–]rtarplee 1 point2 points ago

Its against the law to pirate, like its against the law to smoke weed. That being said, this stuff is incredibly easy to find on TPB, and usually it all comes with instructions. If not, the torrent commnts usually have a good deal of info if anything about the process is glitched or tricky. Paying for a game gives you peace of mind because you insert, install, update, play. When you d/l, its free, but usually the sacrifice is the download, unrar, install, the program(s) used to make it work, proper support, and of course the instant ability to play online. Tl;dr, download single player games, save $ for games you wanna play online

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 0 points1 point ago

I see what you're saying.

Well, I mean I have paid for the one game I have, Starcraft II. I don't have any other computer games except for my video games and gameboy games, which my parents got for me.

[–]mama_llama 1 point2 points ago

It seems like it requires a great deal of finesse.

It seems complicated, but really, it's four basic things. Most games are pretty easy to get though.

*Download it.

*Get a code

*Install

*Use crack

Is this illegal?

I believe it is, yes. But I'm not extremely familiar with the legal issues of it. I think it's a copyright violation.

It seems this court case allows for some leeway: [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Galoob_Toys,_Inc._v._Nintendo_of_America,_Inc.

Interesting, I've never heard of that! I think that deals with mods and cheats more than pirating, but yes that probably did offer some leeway.

Have you ever played Civ III?

Unfortunately not. I read that Civ IV was considered the best one, so I did get that. I enjoyed it immensely, but I didn't find that it kept me playing for too long, I got bored of it rather fast. So I never went back to the other Civ games. If you recommend it, I'll certainly try it out.

[–]Isatis_tinctoria 0 points1 point ago

Well, I'm only familiar with the case, because I wanted to do some legal research before looking into emulators. Apparently, if you own the game already, it is fine to get an emulator. Seeing, as I have like two copies of every Pokemon game, I think it might be find to have an emulator for a Pokemon game. (I just lost games and then had to procure other ones and when I bought the other ones, I found the former game under the couch. Good old early 2000s as a kid.)

I definitely recommend Civ III. I actually loved playing it. I loved playing it and now I am studying government and international relations in college, and the civiepedia greatly helped.

I don't know where to get it now, because I have a mac and steam only has it for windows. Do you have any advice?

Then I saw this gif that loaded instantly and was like oh okay.

Nobody will be giving you stuff for free.

I'm afraid you will have to pirate that parrot.

[–]waywaybaairwa 10 points11 points ago

You wouldn't download a parrot.

[–]Yetanothertroll 0 points1 point ago

Hell yes I would. Give me a 3D organic printer and a copy of Frankenstein so I can figure out how to start the heart of a created object.

Hopefully because the parrot is pretty it won't try to kill its creator.

I would if I could!

[–]X-Craft 0 points1 point ago

I heard you can download a ram, so why not a parrot?

[–]03Titanium 1 point2 points ago

Well if they did sell the parrots then someone would be making money off of pirated games.

[–]ShallowBasketcase 4 points5 points ago

That's why I keep eyepatches conveniently stashed all over the place, so when I hit that magic number of downloads, I can whip one out of nowhere and become a true pirate.

Also, in case of eyepatch-emergencies, I will be crazy prepared.

[–]jennrenn 2 points3 points ago

Do you also stash balls around town in case of ball emergencies?

Yep.

[–]Sovietcafe 4 points5 points ago

Just finished a milk steak and some cat food, so I got this.

Dayman would defeat Nightman, obviously. He's a master of karate, and Nightman's karate is shit. Also he smells, and Dayman is way better looking and doesn't smell, and he doesn't eat butts like all the butts that Mac Nightman eats.

Green is a color, and color can't exist without light, right? So Dayman would defeat Greenman as well, BUT they would never fight each other in the first place! Because if Greenman were to kill Dayman, he too would die because science, so he would be killing himself, which obviously means that they're THE SAME PERSON! This is just like, stuff I learned in school, or something. I don't know anything about it.

[–]feureau 13 points14 points ago

I've been trying to get Microsoft Flight working on my PC. For some fucked up reason, most of the missions are locked until I log in to Live and stay logged in. And for some reason, logging in to Live kept failing. (I can login, it would then demand that I update something but then it would keep failing to upload and I'd have to restart the game)

DRM is fucked. I'm torrenting MS Flight Simulator X.

[–]mmine1 1 point2 points ago

Really? My copy of the game doesn't even have any mention of LIVE. The only DRM I encountered was putting in the CD Key.

[–]feureau 1 point2 points ago

Did you mean MS Flight simulator or MS Flight?

MS Flight doesn't need CD key because it's free-to-play, but mine requested a CD key, and had to do some DRM workaround that some MS software engineer has spread around the forum. And it requires LIVE to be able to unlock some missions, planes etc.

[–]mmine1 0 points1 point ago

I'm talking about MS Flight Simulator.

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

MS Flight is the free-to-play successor to MS Flight Simulator.

[–]G_A 1 point2 points ago

MS Flight and MS's Flight Sim X are to different games, FSX has no DRM, and whilst has numerous greater features to Flight, it doesn't look nearly as pretty.

Flight also has the horrible GFWL DRM, but is F2P with a DLC element of purchasing additional islands to fly about.

[–]mmine1 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah. I was remarking on how FSX has no DRM, and I love it.

[–]UselessRedditor 0 points1 point ago

FSX is so much better than Flight, in my opinion

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

Really? :3

[–]mitraidos 0 points1 point ago

GFWL is a real piece of crap. I bought Bioshock 2 over steam, and had to activate twice(1 over steam, 1 over GFWL) to only figure out GFWL is not supported in my region and I had to crack it to save the game >.<

I won't be purchasing games with GFWL DRM.

[–]feureau 0 points1 point ago

That is really depressing... :(

[–]Abedeus 0 points1 point ago

I never finished my legal copy of Airline Tycoon I got for Christmas... a dozen years ago or more. Why?

Apparently, game thinks the CD I got along with a big box, a manual and printed original cover on it is illegal, so it locks the "airplane management devices" such as notebook and the globe in office. So, I can do free-play... but missions can never be finished. Always stuck on 2nd mission, a day at most before finishing it.

[–]Eustis 12 points13 points ago

No. YOU are brilliant vxx.

[–]skocznymroczny 9 points10 points ago

Steam is also DRM, a nasty one btw.

[–]tenkei 20 points21 points ago

True. But Steam also provides a convenient service and positive benefits. And it doesn't break my computer like some other shitty DRM systems. Granted, Steam is certainly not perfect and needs some work, but it is far better than most DRM I've encountered.

[–]UncleBone 4 points5 points ago

True, but not ALL titles on Steam use Steam for DRM purposes (Crusader Kings 2 to name but one) and Steam ALSO has other features that mean it isn't JUST DRM. (Such as friends etc...)

So there is a vast difference between Steam and, say, Securom, which offers the user zero benefits whatsoever.

[–]skocznymroczny 6 points7 points ago

Well, by Steam I mean Steamworks, since we're talking about DRM.

Things that Steamworks DRM has:

  • online activations, not once, but practically every time you try to play the game excluding offline mode

  • offline mode which works for 30% of people, for 30% of people requires to go offline while being online (lolwtf), and for remaining 40% it just doesn't work.

  • game trading/reselling is impossible

All three of these would be unthinkable 10 years ago and if a company like EA tried to pull it off the gaming community uproar would be massive. What's even more ridiculous is people going "no Steam no buy", begging for DRM in their game, thinking they want their collection in one place. No, that's what they think they want, what they really want is the 75% sales where they buy most of their games.

Also, if at any point Steam goes out of business, you can say goodbye to your games through legit channels (you will be probably forced to use cracks to play your games).

Stuff like friendlists can be useful but not for everyone. Me and all of my gaming friends use XFire for that so Steam would be just additional stuff to install.

[–]crugerdk[!] 5 points6 points ago

tbh - steam was quite controversial when it came first came out.

I remember a lot of bitching about having to activate a single player game (HL2 in this case) online.

[–]UselessRedditor 5 points6 points ago

damn, I remember when PC gamers were able to resell their games and laughed at stuff like online passes/XBL/PSN being implemented on consoles

[–]MrPeppa 0 points1 point ago

But you can't share it with anyone. Kraft will come after you!

I know that no DRM provides much more benefits and conveniences and it's not a problem at all.

[–]110011001100 0 points1 point ago

The no game reselling is partially compensated for by the heavy discounts

[–]UncleBone 0 points1 point ago

The online activations can sometimes be avoided if you run the game from it's actual directory. For example in offline mode you'll sometimes get "failed to connect to key server". Just go into the game directory and run the exe and 9 times out of 10 it'll work.

Offline mode is weird. I've never had any issues at all.

As for trading/reselling, I've never done that so it doesn't bother me.

I can see your point, don't get me wrong, but Steam is certainly the lesser of the many evils right now.

As for them going out of business, Valve have sworn from the start that if Steam ever disappeared they'd fix it so we wouldn't lose all our games.

[–]KRSFive 0 points1 point ago

The ridiculous "offline mode" is horrible. I bought all these games I wanted to play during a 14 hr road trip, but nope. "You can't play without an internet connection"

Really? Really Steam? I dropped money for a game that I can't play whenever, wherever, or however I want?

And thus, I haven't used steam again.

[–]alexanderpas 0 points1 point ago

On the other hand:

  • No more (fragile) CD's and corresponding CD checks (or being unable to play the game because you lost your manual).
  • Being able to download and play the game wherever you have an Internet Connection.

Basically, steam has replaced a stack of CD's and corresponding manuals with an Internet Connection, DRM-wise.

[–]dtxer 1 point2 points ago

steam was nasty but steam today is acutally quite enjoyable. And yes it's DRM but still HAIL GABE MASTER OF THE SSS (steam summer sale)

[–]89rovi 2 points3 points ago

The text 'DRM' and 'PAYING CUSTOMER' moves, but 'PIRATES' doesn't.

[–]Rakoons 6 points7 points ago

Maybe it's a metaphor for how paying customers will sooner or later leave the industry but the pirates will always stay?

[–]89rovi 4 points5 points ago

Probably.

[–]oiturtlez 7 points8 points ago

10/10 would watch again.

Good thing it's a gif

[–]chuckles2011 3 points4 points ago

Upvote for slowest loading GIF ever.

[–]visionviper 0 points1 point ago

DRM annoys me. I have a CableCard tuner and Time Warner Cable, which means everything I record is flagged as protected and encrypted. I would like to make a huge collection of shows I love (The Crocodile Hunter, Good Eats, etc) but I also know that if something happens to my server and it requires a re-install of Windows or I upgrade and have to re-install Windows I lose them. All of them. I would never be able to play them again. I guess I can just keep going to torrent sites like I always have to get copies of TV shows.

[–]AnorexicBuddha 0 points1 point ago

Okay, I know basically what DRM is and its purpose, but why exactly is it bad for the consumers?

[–]ElectronicPotato 1 point2 points ago

Well, there are diffrent kinds of DRM and some are really just fucking ridicoulus. Like the Diablo III one. You cant even play without being logged in and when the servers are jammed or they have to do maintance you're basiclly fucked.

[–]AnorexicBuddha 0 points1 point ago

But that seems like an extreme DRM. What's an average, run of the mill DRM?

[–]Aquaristkid 0 points1 point ago

This is what I picture when I hear "Gender Equality"

[–]twas_a_walrus 0 points1 point ago

Hahaha, I love how the big guy just sits back down after the ball hits the woman. "Alright, that's what I thought!"

[–]Popkarma 0 points1 point ago

The best part was watching it load ><

[–]bryandtucker 0 points1 point ago

The longest loading gif ever.

[–]allocater 0 points1 point ago

Pirate sits down instead of defending the womans honor!?

[–]MoshMuth 0 points1 point ago

Loading this on my phone made the build up so much better.

[–]raikren 0 points1 point ago

Call me lazy, but can someone explain this to me? The relation between DRM Pirates and Consumers.

[–]STArsonist 0 points1 point ago

The fact that pirates can break through drm eventually anyway just means that it's left to, as shown in the gif, hurt the paying and honest customers :/

[–]Eighthsin 0 points1 point ago

No matter how high you build a wall, someone is going to find a way to the other side. That's why we've been to the moon.

Companies need to ally with their paying customers. All it takes is.a little extra incentive. Like how cereals make you collect UPC codes. They do that because it works.

[–]Fr_ENT 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone have a link to the video for this gif? Thanks in advance.

[–]Ivan_of_Zeta 0 points1 point ago

The ball needs spikes

[–]dancingdudesean 0 points1 point ago

She didn't pay for that ball, who's the real pirate?

[–]JSX1A 0 points1 point ago

Ah, lovely.
