I can't find any statistics cause I'm on my phone, but I'm guessing the amount of people in prison for stealing food is very low. Like less than a percent.

It should be, they should rather help you than make you even poorer. As always I would recommend community service, which also might help these people get into the working world. Prison should only be for murderers, rapists, etc. the tough crimes

No, we live in a society that accepts it as part of the prison punishment. We don't want officers to be the ones beating on inmates, so we allow the other inmates to do it for them. It's another way of separating 'us' from 'them.'

That said, there's no way of stopping it. Might as well try and use it for some good (as a deterrent).

I hope that next time someone makes a joke about a woman being raped, everyone piles on like this. Reddit has the strangest double-standard with rape jokes. :/ No rape is funny, but people only really seem to get upset about it when it's prison rape.

Honestly, I think it's because people who support / laugh at male-on-female sexual assault are fucked up beyond help.

On the other hand, prison rape is something that's generally pretty socially acceptable. You see cops on TV joke about it / threaten it all the time, and it's just not a big deal. It's one of those cultural things that everybody just kind of accepts without really thinking about it, and if you point that out enough there's a good chance you might just make somebody think twice.

Perhaps that's true elsewhere than the Internet, but there's a really weird double standard with regards to rape. I've seen this picture posted here often, and each time the top comment is something along the lines of "But seriously you guys, prison rape isn't funny".
