When it zooms in you can see a cut if you look at the angle of his head specifically. It goes from tilted to the left to straighter when it finishes zooming. It's subtle. I didn't notice it until someone pointed it out... and you guys didn't until I did.

They take one take of the zooming in, then one of his face reaction and put them together basically. I'm not sure why.

It's because they can't get a good quality close-up shot with a zoomed in camera; it would look flattened. So in that final close-up when he nods, the camera is actually physically really close to his face.

Now you might ask (as I did), why not just wheel the camera up to him, instead of zooming? Well for one thing he would have to keep his head even more steady, unless they went really fast, which isn't really practical on-set. Also, it wouldn't get the same effect as artificial zoom, where it sort of whooshes in like that. At least, that's what I think is going on, here.

They actually do have a robot (similar to those robot arms that help build cars in factories) that can be programmed precise movements such as moving in a straight line at high speed yet incredibly stable.
