Yeah, what kind of 8 year old doesn't get a pulp fiction reference when they see it?

[–]kwozy_moto 2 points3 points ago

Maybe not 8, but a good while before I left primary school, I had seen a lot of classic 15/18s movies. My favourite films as a kid were stuff like Pulp Fiction, The Warriors, Goodfellas and some others. I know most of my friends were the same, but I suppose it comes down to how much your parents let you watch when you're younger.

[–]Smells_Like_Victory 2 points3 points ago

I remember when I was about 10 or so, one of my friends did the 'you never can tell' dance from Pulp Fiction. Being a 10-year-old, I didn't get it but always remembered it. Fast-forward 6-8 years to when I watched PF for the first time. When that scene came on, the whole thing clicked and I had such a moment of realisation. He was a cool kid...didn't realise that until I was too old :(

[–]UiiN 1 point2 points ago

Hellraiser when i was 6, i know it's a cheap ass looking movie but when i was 6 it was fucking scary.

[–]zodberg 2 points3 points ago

you were the target audience!

[–]kilo4fun 1 point2 points ago

Event Horizon when I was 8.

Edit: I let my 3 year old watch the Alien movies. He loved them.

[–]UiiN 0 points1 point ago

You're going to have an awesome kid! Haha.

[–]Anon4Mudkips 0 points1 point ago

The future is ours... if you can count!

[–]moesif 16 points17 points ago

Do Vince and Jules even wear glasses?

[–]ChetBenning 18 points19 points ago

No, never. The 'Colors' wear shades (some at least) when they leave the diner in Reservoir Dogs, so there might be some mish-mash going on.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

Being 18 in 1994 (Pulp Fiction) and 20 in 1996 (Space Jam), it was really obvious. The entire theatre died laughing. :)

BTW, have a nice lead breakfast!

[–]lukeco 4 points5 points ago

Pogo is amazing. His "Up" and 2 "Toy Story" songs are amazing.

[–]CHEWS_OWN_FORESKIN 5 points6 points ago

I still masturbate to lola...

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

Don't we all ..

[–]Mepsi 0 points1 point ago

My mother was 36 when we watched it and she told me it was a Blues Brothers reference.

[–]girafa -1 points0 points ago

You saw Space Jam in the theater?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Hell yeah I saw Space Jam in the theatre -- it was the first major Loony Toons movie in forever at that point.

[–]girafa -1 points0 points ago

Interesting perspective. I guess I should watch it one day.

[–]ForgottenRomeo 37 points38 points ago

Never noticed? If I recall the theme starts playing and everything...

[–]_Meece_ 13 points14 points ago

Yeah I watched it last year and only got the reference then. I don't think a kid would ever get a Pulp Fiction reference.

[–]hyperboleblues 11 points12 points ago

I mean... unless that kid watched pulp fiction.

[–]waxdoor 2 points3 points ago

This thread makes me feel old. When I saw Space Jam I thought it was an obvious reference. I also wasn't 8 when I saw Space Jam... :-/ EDIT: was/wasn't

[–]Spartan_84[S] 4 points5 points ago

I had a very sheltered childhood and I hadn't seen pulp fiction until about 2 years ago so I never knew what that was

[–]alamotexas 37 points38 points ago

you really shouldn't see pulp fiction if you're a kid. like at all.

[–]steviesteveo12 18 points19 points ago

Nah, it's perfectly child friendly.

"When you came pulling in here, did you notice a sign out in front of my house that said "Dead Nigger Storage"? "

[–]DingoSuavez 5 points6 points ago

"Daddy, what is that man doing to the other man?"

"They're just playing horsey. Just...horsey"

[–]OKGoldfish 0 points1 point ago

[–]EvilFrostop 6 points7 points ago

I was 13 when I viddied a Clockwork Orange, and 14 when I watched Pulp Fiction and Fight Club. Nothing has been the same since.

[–]Spartan_84[S] 1 point2 points ago

Yeah definitely not a kids movie

[–]Spartan_84[S] 0 points1 point ago

Exactly why I didn't get it as a kid I'm 20 now and I was 4 when space jam came out

[–]dubbledutch 1 point2 points ago

I think it even has Miserlou playing during that scene

[–]Spartan_84[S] -1 points0 points ago

Yes it did haha

[–]Dinersore 5 points6 points ago

As a kid I always thought of that as a men In Black reference, even though Men In Black probably wasn't even out then.

[–]4011 9 points10 points ago

No Space Jam thread is complete without mentioning the original website is still up, and it's as incredible as you remember all websites in 1996.

[–]jsbisviewtiful 1 point2 points ago

My roommate was actually the person who first brought that to reddit's attention a few years back. He got interviewed by some blogs/sites asking him about how he thought of checking and so forth... internet celebrity.

[–]pfigure 1 point2 points ago

No one gives a flying fuck about your sexy, 6'2" brown haired (and I heard single) roommate. No one.

[–]HustlerThug 4 points5 points ago

There was even the music from Pulp Fiction at that part, no?

[–]Shelton69er 13 points14 points ago

I've yet to see Pulp Fiction... I always thought that was referencing Men in Black.

[–]raffytraffy 12 points13 points ago

MIB came out in '97 and Space Jam in '96...

[–]frankthetankricard 1 point2 points ago

I always thought it was MIB until I noticed the guns they were holding

[–]Romination -2 points-1 points ago

But I saw Space Jam in theaters, and I still thought that. What the hell is going on in my head!?

[–]Shelton69er -3 points-2 points ago

I don't think it registered until after I saw MIB...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

It's the 'Misrilou' guitar riff that plays that cinches that it's Pulp Fiction.

[–]Shelton69er -1 points0 points ago

Oh haha.. I didn't know

[–]cernunnos_89 2 points3 points ago

i always thought it was a MIB refferance as a kid

[–]zagx 0 points1 point ago

That's probably more of what i thought too. If Elmer Fudd had that Jules' Jheri Curl Afro, then it'd be clear.

[–]cernunnos_89 0 points1 point ago

lol ya

[–]TurnerJ5 2 points3 points ago

Hay I just noticed Space Jam had real basketball player Michael Jordan in it!

[–]dailyfusion 2 points3 points ago

you noticed it because it is the ENTIRE screen. you just didn't get it.

[–]ADonkeysArmy 5 points6 points ago

Huh, i always thought it was Men in Black

[–]lastrogu3 1 point2 points ago

I had seen MIB before I saw space jam, so I thought it was a reference to MIB, I see that's impossible now since MIB came out a year later. thank you for setting me straight on this!

[–]thenoblekoala 1 point2 points ago

Is it a MIB reference?

[–]metalsatch 1 point2 points ago

I watched this movie when I was 8, had never seen pulp fiction and even I knew it was a refrence to that movie.

Give me a cookie please

[–]wwt0112 1 point2 points ago

Growing up I always thought of Men in Black

[–]geecue 1 point2 points ago

I thought it was a Men in Black reference?

[–]rmeddy 1 point2 points ago

I remember my mom really laughing at this and I was like that isn't so funny

[–]Shamrock28 3 points4 points ago

Is that not a reference to Men In Black?

[–]IveGotAHadron 8 points9 points ago

No, MiB came out a year after Space Jam.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

It's the 'Misrilou' guitar riff that plays that cinches that it's Pulp Fiction.

[–]beno2367 3 points4 points ago

how'd you miss it? i wouldn't really call it subtle

[–]Spartan_84[S] 5 points6 points ago

I had a very sheltered childhood and I hadn't seen pulp fiction until about 2 years ago so I never knew what that was

[–]sharpey95 1 point2 points ago

I thought its men in black..

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

one of the best parts

[–]crackktheskyee 0 points1 point ago

yes

[–]danoll 0 points1 point ago

It's a pretty obvious reference, but man do I love me some Space Jam.

[–]RGT42 0 points1 point ago

Ah yes it has the song from the beginning of Pulp too! Pulp Fiction would have scared the shit out of me at that age.

[–]Boilerjuan 0 points1 point ago

My friend watches Space Jam religiously about once a month and he thought it was a reference to MIB until I pointed that out to him.

[–]worldchampionwinner 0 points1 point ago

Whenever i see an old movie on the TV should i just expect to see some kind reference from it on Reddit?

[–]kacperp 0 points1 point ago

i thought everyone got it? it was so obvious and i was a kid, but i knew about pulp fiction and music from it etc. so i cannot believe that someone might not get it...

[–]moesif 0 points1 point ago

Honestly how is this a Pulp Fiction reference? Two guys wearing black with guns that's it?

[–]Mattj3000 0 points1 point ago

Favorite part, I would rewind the tape to see this over and over. Plus, Dick Dale.

[–]mynamejermo 0 points1 point ago

Just saw this this weekend. About shit. "Say what again!"

[–]wickydooda 0 points1 point ago

I heard about this reference on Reddit like 10 months ago, and looked all over the internet to try and find it (because I only have the movie on VHS), so THANK YOU for posting this!

[–]CaptainRumBucket 0 points1 point ago

I had completely forgot Space Jam existed before I started going on Reddit.

Now I fucking hate that movie

[–]Mrs_Damon 0 points1 point ago

S-s-say w-what ag-gain!

[–]godlessatheist 0 points1 point ago

I prefer the Pulp Fiction reference in House.

[–]migzors -1 points0 points ago

More shocked that there are two huge guns on a kid's movie. It goes to show what really sticks in a kid's mind when watching movies.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Except that Yosemite Sam was shooting a giant rifle at Bugs all the time ..

[–]migzors 0 points1 point ago

True, but the realism of those guns is more of a reality to kids than Yosemite Sam's!

[–]Quacksandpiper -5 points-4 points ago

That is dum, who the fuck didn't notice that.

[–]zane17 1 point2 points ago

kids

[–]Spartan_84[S] 0 points1 point ago

I was 4 when I first saw this movie

[–]Quacksandpiper 0 points1 point ago

Sorry dude but you didn't uncover any great secret with that knowledge.

[–]Spartan_84[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm not saying I did but last time I saw this movie I was 5 and had no idea what pulp fiction was
