And then you end up as a screen shot on reddit

Such a vicious cycle. I'd say if my post was about atheism I'd have a better shot at that ;-)

Or on reddit for that matter also.

If you talk politics on Reddit you'll have a worse time.
[–]billdietrich1 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Facebook is a TERRIFIC place to discuss politics. People Friend you for some unrelated reason, then you find out you and they have completely opposite political or religious stances. You get to talk to people you ordinarily would never meet. Often ends when they un-Friend you, but sometimes there's a lot of good conversation.

and/or religion.

It grinds my gears when people blow up twitter or facebook about their opinions, especially if they haven't taken the time to form an opinion they can call their own or even understand the issue(s). Being personally on hand for NC's amendment 1 debate and now obamacare has driven me to cull the people I follow on twitter (a base and evil medium, I might add) and delete people from facebook. I have opinions and love to talk about them, but that is not the place; I know no-one cares about my opinion, so I keep it to myself until someone asks. Sorry for the rant [EDIT] I don't talk politics on facebook or twitter, still had a bad time

Why isn't it the place to talk politics? Twitter I can see because of character limits, but FB is the perfect place for politics. Where do you think political discussion belongs?
[–]thecityboy 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
I agree, politics on Facebook isn't a bad thing, it's good for posting articles you find interesting and some might read it. If you don't want to read political articles just scroll past, it's not like your finger is broken and you can't scroll anymore is it?
yeah, it's not articles I mind, just people in general, but that might just mean I'm antisocial
in person, where things can't be taken out of context, or in personal messages at least, where people that aren't interested in what someone else has to say doesn't have to see it. Of course, I guess facebook is built around allowing people to say things at large without a need to back them up. It just frustrates me when I get on and see that level of ignorance, pride, and vanity. It makes me ashamed of all the people on my friends list. It's not that I disagree with them necessarily (although I find myself a minority in most of the political conversations I have with people), I just prefer an educated, peaceful, non-aggressive forum with people, people that have such strong opinions they actually go out and voice them where it matters (the voting booth) rather than on social media. Just because you communicate via facebook doesn't make facebook bad, but the culture around social media allows people to say and do things that would be inane in a legitimate conversation. Seeing "XYZ is gay/stupid" or "I'm moving to Canada" or "Tea-Party politicians are satanic" is not constructive to me. There's a place for that humor, and I can be as insensitive, ruthless, and - if I do say so myself - funny as the next guy, I just don't prefer to air my personal thoughts on things like that in public without solicitation. Sorry for the long reply, I'm at work and am using this as an excuse to procrastinate.

I think you're just making some arbitrary distinction between social media and other forms of communication. If I write an essay on a political topic and send it to my local news paper, that's not really any different than if I post it on my Facebook wall. The audience might be different, but that's sort of the point. Furthermore, how is Reddit any different? Reddit is just a social network of strangers instead of actual friends.
As for the whole thing where people "have to see" things other people post on Facebook. No, not really. Facebook, and nearly everything on the internet, is designed in such a way as to ignore people quite easily.
What it sounds like is that you just don't like people being idiots and your Facebook friends are mostly idiots, which makes you feel bad for being friends with them.
Nail on the head, really. But when you use facebook as a utility and not entertainment and need to be able to see particular things that can't be separated from the personal/day-to-day, it can be frustrating. I probably shouldn't have said anything. My comment should have been more focused on the culture of different sites. But I disagree, I think submitting an essay to a paper is a lot different than talking politics on facebook. If you are writing an essay, you have a concern with the issue beyond a "funny" comment or something. And yes, the difference in audience in certainly the point. If facebook can be for honest political discourse, it is for an audience interested in that. But facebook is also for inane comments, which is fine, but but that's definitely for a particular audience. Maybe I just am bad at facebook, but I can't seem to separate personal things, work things, functional things, honest semi-"sound off" comments and jokes; if you want at least one from a person, you have to take the rest of it too. Reddit is different because it is strangers, and strangers can enter into things without history/baggage/whatever and that, for some reason, improves everything. Judging content and separating the wheat from the chaff so only the best makes the front page helps a lot. And subreddits allow me to shift between a cornucopia of different content to a specific interest I want to browse. I just have a tough time reconciling the purpose, function, and reality of sites like facebook when it comes to something significant.
Also, side note, even though people are disagreeing with me to a degree on this, having this kind of conversation with someone I don't know is very pleasant. Ya'll have a point and make it without destructive language. You use complete sentences. Back when I used to try to converse with people on facebook (good friends, coworkers, and strangers), nothing like this ever happened. So yay reddit. And I don't know if I should be flattered people still have something to say about my comment or not, but it's been a couple days and there are still replies to my comment. How festive.
