Fargo, you say? Check out Minot - Just don't live there. Taco Bell pays $15/hr, for fucks sake.

Oil boom, you see.

Don't post a picture of your uniform or do an IAMA

Fargo is a pretty great little city. Extremely low cost of living combined with low unemployment and low crime rates does that. The people are friendly and genuine.

Some advice.

  1. If you break out a winter coat in 40 degree weather you will stick out, then maybe die when it actually gets cold.

  2. Layers are the best way to stay warm in the winter. Long sleeve shirts and sweatshirts are a must underneath a coat when it gets below zero. Long underwear and long socks are good as well.

  3. Don't try and keep up with the locals while drinking, they are professionals who have honed their craft during the long nights of winter.

  4. Don't be shy or insecure. I had a friend that moved from a city and commented on how easy it was to get to know people in the mid-west. People honestly like talking and are very welcoming to outsiders.

You could always just create a scheme to have your wife kidnapped, then have your wealthy father-in-law pay the ransom, with which you will split between you and the kidnappers. But, the plan will go horribly wrong, your wife will be shot, your father-in-law will be shot, one of the kidnappers will be shot then fed through a woodchipper, all the while causing a ruckus with the local authorities. .... I'll make ya some eggs.

My boyfriend is moving from California to very very rural Illinois to be with me and to hopefully find a job. Your post gives me some hope. Thank you, and congratulations.

[–]ajamison 1 point2 points ago

Congrats OP. You and millions of others are leaving this sad state. I've had 10 friends leave in the past 2 months because they either: couldn't find jobs here (LA area) or got better offers elsewhere.

In fact, I have a writer friend moving to ND next week working at a newspaper. He's struggled for years here in LA and has been temping on & off with nothing steady in quite some time. It's a mess here! I plan on moving myself - aiming for Texas myself. But heck, I'd be happy in ND too.

[–]HoldMaahDick 1 point2 points ago

Takes balls sir. You are all that is.

[–]revenantae 1 point2 points ago

Congratulations. It's shocking how many people don't realize that there are places in the U.S. with very low unemployment and that it is possible to go to those places.

[–]Modus_Pwninz 3 points4 points ago

I live in MN and even I don't really want to move to ND to work. ND kind of sucks.

Thankfully, I landed a sweet job working as tech support for a hardware company in Minneapolis last month, so I'm no longer having to look. :D

[–]S00thslayer 0 points1 point ago

I live in Fargo ND and I can vouch for ND sucking.

[–]torokunai 2 points3 points ago

tough to drive out 1800 miles away from all your friends and family.

like moving to another planet, really.

As for "very low unemployment" there's actually still systemic high unemployment everywhere. Fargo might only have 3% official unemployment, but its labor force is 120,000, so that's still 4,000 people there out of work and there hasn't been net job growth since the recession started:

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/FARG038LFN

per-capita personal income has been flat:

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/FARG038PCPI

underlining the point that Fargo isn't so great, it's just that everywhere else is falling apart.

We all can't move to Fargo and get jobs. That's not how the economy works.

[–]ChaoticV 2 points3 points ago

Fargo is far outpacing the rest of the country economy wise, and the recession was barely even felt. North Dakota has the lowest unemployment in the nation and many companies cannot get the employees they need.

Currently Fargo has a huge shortage in manufacturing workers and skilled labor. I know of high school kids working the summer in manufacturing jobs because there is no one to fill them full time.

Another thing that Fargo has going for it is a low cost of living. AN average two bedroom apartment is under $600/month including all utilities except electricity/phone/tv/internet, and prices have not gone up at all recently.

The state is also in very good shape with a Billion dollar surplus last year and oil profits expected to grow exponentially. There are thousands of high paying jobs available in the oil fields for anyone who can handle working hard. North Dakota's population has grown from 570,000 to over an estimated 700,000 in a few short year and there are still jobs available all over.

Of course everyone in America can't move here and find a job, but all the ones that move now will get a job if they have acceptable qualifications.

whoopdedeoo, 10,000 jobs since the recession ended.

vs.

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/MANEMP

and

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/USCONS

it's nothing.

North Dakota has the lowest unemployment in the nation and many companies cannot get the employees they need.

true but ND is a very small part of our $15T+ economy.

and oil profits expected to grow exponentially

not really. The profits are signficant but they're not going to grow exponentially and they're not going to circulate within the state all that much.

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/NDNRMN

looks impressive but then you see it's only 15,000 jobs added.

[–]killafofun 0 points1 point ago

but now you live in Fargo. sorry.

[–]Fookimoose 0 points1 point ago

How could you not find a job? Where were you looking?

[–]plain-jaine[S] 1 point2 points ago

all entry-level type jobs in the east bay area. None would take me without experience

[–]Fookimoose -1 points0 points ago

Ah, so you were shooting for more of a career-style job. I was a bit surprised at first. Kind of a give-in that you wont get hired without experience.

[–]plain-jaine[S] 2 points3 points ago

I went for those types and mall type jobs. I just had no luck with any of them. Im a pretty shy person though, so i guess me not being overly aggressive is what kept me from getting hired.

[–]Fookimoose 1 point2 points ago

It depends on a lot of things. I managed two small businesses in northern California and people were always coming in looking for jobs. I had never met these people so my first impression would be based on their appearance and how they presented themselves. To be honest with you I would tell people more often than not that we weren't hiring but that we always accepted resumes. I turned away people based on appearance regularly, people that seemed overly forward or overly meek, people with poor hygiene, so many people. One of the people I did hire was quiet, reserved, trying to get his start on his first job. He reminded me a lot of myself so I gave him a chance and brought him on. I like to think I taught him a lot and had a big influence on him; we're still friends today. I'm glad to hear that you finally found some good fortune somewhere. I wish you luck in your future endeavors.

[–]suckdings 1 point2 points ago

Who hired you, if you don't mind me asking? How was your job-seeking experience overall? I remember moving to Fargo and feeling very lucky to work somewhere where I could just transfer to the Fargo location, no big hassle. My wife had a much harder time finding a job when we first moved. That was even before the recession, but we were college kids.

Also with as big as the internet is, I think it's super-cool when I stumble across posts from other North Dakotans, let alone someone in the same area.

[–]franick1987 0 points1 point ago

The density of people in CA is so great that competition is extremely fierce. Back in the day people looked to the city as the place to find work, but because that logic has become completely eroded, it has now become the case that more rural areas will provide better chances at finding basic work.

[–]markISsolid -1 points0 points ago

Were you hired as a woodchipper salesman? Cause...ya know...that movie...had a wood chipper...ugh nevermind
