Kate Beaton is such a fantastic web comic artist and writer.

[–]Rainbow- 17 points18 points ago

Isn't she though! She works at my local comic book store.

[–]CommentsAndShit 7 points8 points ago

Where o: I want to meet her

[–]grammargiraffe 11 points12 points ago

I did. It was at a comic convention in New York. I politely told her that I was also from Canada. She was nice about that. We smiled awkwardly and then I walked away, pretending that I knew someone at the other end of the hall.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

It could not be more obvious what is on the other end of that link, yet I still click.

[–]bananasapplesandnuts 0 points1 point ago

Man! Really? She is so wonderful.

[–]AetherIsWaiting 0 points1 point ago

My best friend met her and she drew a comic of her daydreaming about my friend. It's awesome.

[–]Captainpatch 10 points11 points ago

Must... Upvote... Kate Beaton... Any time... Canada is mentioned...

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

I can hear my hair growing and it sounds like worms trying to escape birds

[–]guy_from_canada 1 point2 points ago

I approve of these comics and their validity.

[–]AetherIsWaiting 1 point2 points ago

Whoa I just spent the last half hour going through those. Brilliant I tell ya

[–]bent42 3 points4 points ago

Is it because you live in Montreal?

[–]nice_fjords 3 points4 points ago

Maybe, though I was really thinking about a number of anglophones from Ontario that I've met and 'befriended'/interacted with. French Canadians have been friendlier in my experience. People from Ontario in general.

[–]AetherIsWaiting 2 points3 points ago

it's the small towns in which everyone is super duper nice. Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto they all have a majority of "city people" very busy people who don't care about you.

[–]A_Pepper_Gerbil 2 points3 points ago

Throw Ottawa in there too. I can't wait to leave this shit-hole.

[–]Tsirek 0 points1 point ago

You have to be a big city to have city people, sorry ottawa.

[–]Tsirek 1 point2 points ago

Im a montrealer, i was just going to ask if he lived in toronto.

[–]OompaDoompatyDoo 0 points1 point ago

As a twenty something Canadian I am offended by this stereo type.

[–]TrueMilanista 249 points250 points ago

I was going to post a comment, but does anyone else want to go first? I wouldn't want to be rude.

[–]kellz419 77 points78 points ago

Why how thoughtful of you, but I insist, after you sir.

[–]bobbydigitalFTW 55 points56 points ago

How nice of you. You can go ahead of me too.

[–]TrueMilanista 40 points41 points ago

Well thanks to you both. Please, take this as a token of my appreciation. Homemade eh!

[–]I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II 34 points35 points ago

You're not Canadian. We use "eh" to when questioning someone whether or not they agree, understand or have interest. We just don't add that on all willy-nilly like the French. This is similar to how some black people use "you know what I'm sayin'?"

[–]ramsrgood 10 points11 points ago

people pretending to be canadian. that's weird, eh?

[–]I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, eh.

[–]TrueMilanista 5 points6 points ago

I didn't say I was Canadian... I lived in southern Ontario for about 8 years and my brother is actually Canadian, but no, I am not.

[–]KingToasty 25 points26 points ago

That's OK, I forgive you.

[–]RabidMuskrat93 2 points3 points ago

How Canadian. Apologizing for something you had no part in.

[–]kellz419 4 points5 points ago

Well, now I must make pancakes.

TO THE KITCHEN!!!

[–]TrueMilanista 8 points9 points ago

As long as you let me do the dishes for you.

[–]manliestofmerlins 3 points4 points ago

I'll get the syrup.

[–]averagemonkey 6 points7 points ago

Sorry, eh.

[–]shyguy95 10 points11 points ago

Are Canadians really that polite? Between that and some of the laws they have there, plus my very limited knowledge of Canada, it actually sounds like it could be nice to move there someday.

[–]CozyToes 8 points9 points ago

I think everyone here is pretty darn nice. But we go absolutely fuckball nuts over hockey games. It's not an exaggeration, or stereotype. It's the truth. It's scary.

[–]Pinklizard26 7 points8 points ago

That's very true! It's it's not just men that go fuckball nuts. I work with a man who immigrated from Mexico. He came into work one morning all huffy when I asked what was up he told me the woman he was dating had blown him off for a date the night before... Cause there was a hockey game. Awww I see I said 'so did she not give you the option to join her?' she did but he doesn't love hockey it's not soccer. So when he declined she said ok and chose hockey over him. I had a hard explaining to him that's it's always going to be that way. Since he's in Canada he can either suck it up and learn to at least like the sport or be forever alone during hockey season.

[–]rainebow_trombones 16 points17 points ago

I'm Canadian and have lived in the U.S. for 7 years. The biggest difference politeness-wise has got to be this (and it only applies to most):

Canada Person does something nice for me, like holding the door. Me: Thanks! Person: You're welcome.

U.S. Person does something nice for me, like holding the door. Me: Thanks! Person: Uh huh.

[–]Wargall 11 points12 points ago

Unless you're in NYC

Thanks! FUCK OFF.

[–]Kilkun 0 points1 point ago

Do you know anyone named Marty or Harvey?

[–]Wargall 0 points1 point ago

Why? Am I missing a reference or something?

[–]Kilkun 0 points1 point ago

Because there's always the cool accent from New York (That sounds like this) and matched with either the name "Hawvey" or "Mawty".

[–]IPreferOddNumbers 0 points1 point ago

I imagine you've never been to NYC...

[–]B2k3 4 points5 points ago

I know it sounds silly, but "uh-huh" or something other than "You're welcome" may just be a person's way of saying "No thanks necessary"

[–]Ducksaucenem 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. I think people misinterpret it as "whatever" instead of "no problem".

[–]Orioneone 2 points3 points ago

LOL! That's so bang on.

[–]shyguy95 1 point2 points ago

If I may ask, how do you like the U.S. compared to Canada? What caused you to move?

[–]rainebow_trombones 0 points1 point ago

I love the U.S. It's not a whole lot different, really, and not easy to explain. A bit chillier in Canada, I suppose :) haha. Also, the different words and spellings tripped me up at first. At the time, I was in grade school, and my dad took a job with Microsoft.

[–]Chuffalo_Bill 1 point2 points ago

I experienced this first hand last year when I went to Arizona. I felt like I had somehow inconvenienced the guy holding the door for me so I gave him a quick "sorry!"

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

its a southern thing, don't take it personally, it's equivalent to "you're welcome" or they wouldn't hold the door for you, they'd be a fucker and go in first and not even acknowledge you exist.

[–]lethal_weapon_five 36 points37 points ago

I'm sorry to ruin your perception of us but in reality most of us are jerks.

Sorry

[–]THE_IRISHMAN_35 40 points41 points ago

U must be french canadian

[–]Romanza 11 points12 points ago

French Canadian here.. Fuck you.

[–]arbiterxero 7 points8 points ago

Half french canadian here..

You can go fuck yourself.

Sorry.

[–]BCas 1 point2 points ago

I guess you just hate the Irish then up there!

[–]SickNarsh 1 point2 points ago

What have I done to you !?

[–]Bunbury42 11 points12 points ago

I have met two Canadians in my life. Both were extremely polite.

Clearly my tiny anecdotal sample size trumps your opinion of being actually Canadian.

[–]Ragnalypse 3 points4 points ago

Actually, I've heard about how Canadians behave a few times on Reddit, I think I'm the most qualified.

[–]TrueMilanista 8 points9 points ago

Haha I lived in Canukistan for about 8 years and I definitely think the people are very friendly but I moved from their to Maine so there wasn't really any discrepancy. Now I live in Connecticut and the biggest thing I notice every day is driving. At a stop sign up north its like "you go," "no you go." Here its closer to, "get the fuck out of my way and learn to drive."

[–]Bazing1980 2 points3 points ago

I'm a truck driver and travel around a lot, obviously. And I cannot honestly tell any difference from Canada and Maine.

[–]English_Mothafukka 6 points7 points ago

I do tend to think that we are a bit more polite than our neighbours to the south. That being said, our politeness is obviously exaggerated on Reddit. To be perfectly honest, I live in Northern Ontario and I absolutely love my country. Our government is doing some things that I am not a fan of, but I love our country. I truly am proud to be Canadian.

tldr; We're pretty nice folks, but it is exaggerated on here. Come join us fellow!

[–]bullhead2007 0 points1 point ago

What I've noticed from an IT point of view:

People from Ontario: "Oh our router is having issues and it might take some time to fix? Okay thanks for your help."

People from certain parts of the US: "OUR SHIT DOESNT WORK AND I WANT IT FIXED NOW. NO I AM NOT GOING TO TROUBLE SHOOT THAT JUST FIX IT. LET ME TALK TO YOUR MANAGER YOU IDIOT."

[–]Landale 1 point2 points ago

Well then stop asking me to reset my router and modem...I did it twice before I called you!

But honestly, I am very polite with anyone I call on the phone. They have a rough time of it as it is, and most are just trying to be helpful.

[–]Sofiira 3 points4 points ago

I have American friends who at first thought I was snobby as they felt I was being intentionally "overly polite". In reality, I was just being me - I didn't realize that snobby meant opening doors for others, saying please and thank you, as well as saying "I'm sorry" (some examples they gave me). Once they realized it had nothing to do with being hoddy toddy, we get along famously. :)

[–]Iknowr1te 5 points6 points ago

I didn't realize that snobby meant opening doors for others, saying please and thank you, as well as saying "I'm sorry

  1. you open door for people, that's common courtesy

  2. Saying please and thank you makes one snobby 0.o

  3. I say Sorry all the time 0.o, even if i'm not the guilty party and was the wronged party (well mostly wronged things are never 100%)

[–]Sofiira 0 points1 point ago

Me too! :)

[–]Tsirek 0 points1 point ago

Ill apologize if someone bumps into me on the street, even when im not at fault

[–]Landale 0 points1 point ago

As an American who does these things, I have never encountered that kind of reaction...if anything people are more (pleasantly) surprised at my politeness, and respond in kind.

Where were you located that the folks there had such a poor opinion on people with manners?

[–]Sofiira 0 points1 point ago

Michigan

[–]crazedcanuck 1 point2 points ago

The more of you that move to this great place. The more my people will say "They took our Moose"

[–]ramsrgood 0 points1 point ago

sorry, but this is a major exaggeration. we are quite polite though.

[–]JMango -1 points0 points ago

On the most part I think so, unless you're in Toronto. There is an obvious effort to be unfriendly there. This information is anecdotal at best.

[–]AnUnfriendlyCanadian 1 point2 points ago

Yeah sure, I'll go. Y'know I gotta say, I'm really sick of this fucking stereotype. Some of us are assholes just like anywhere else.

[–]Lynch117 1 point2 points ago

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend.

[–]ryan2point0 0 points1 point ago

Yer fuckin alright eh?

[–]Tsirek 0 points1 point ago

[–]supremegamby 23 points24 points ago

If I had a nickel for every time I've seen this picture... Well I'd have myself fifteen cents.

[–]Bazing1980 6 points7 points ago

That's three times!

[–]CodeNameJake 1 point2 points ago

Woah! Nice job!

[–]Trickboss 4 points5 points ago

As a European, I had no idea what a nickel was.

[–]monkeybreath 16 points17 points ago

Why was "crisis" spelled "crysis"?

[–]Harodan 11 points12 points ago

Because they've already deployed the nanosuit assassins to take care of the protesting problem.

[–]Quaxi 2 points3 points ago

In Canadian Crysis, Nomad is terribly sorry to all North Koreans.

[–]MarxKarlton 1 point2 points ago

It was pundits using punditry. In all seriousness, it was a poke at the protesters for being crying nancies. Oh, and sorry for the larks.

[–]monkeybreath 1 point2 points ago

That sort of makes sense, now. I don't follow The Sun or Fox News or I'm sure that would have been an obvious trope.

[–]artificiallyvain 10 points11 points ago

Shep Smith is suppressing a serious smirk there.

[–]zanmanoodle 4 points5 points ago

He's always suppressing a smirk, with varying degrees of success.

[–]proudcanadian3410875 32 points33 points ago

if my fellow Canadians aren't upset, then they're not paying attention.

[–]Nictionary 3 points4 points ago

Canadians are too damn apathetic! .. but what are you gonna do?

[–]ookiisask 0 points1 point ago

We burned down the White House once. We might do it again! If it doesn't inconvenience anyone at the time. And if it doesn't fall on a government work day. And provided we don't decide to see the sights first.

[–]froggie4today 7 points8 points ago

Canadians never pay attention, that's the problem.

[–]twistedstarr 21 points22 points ago

Pay attention to what?

[–]theglace 13 points14 points ago

Something about hockey, Tim Horton's and being sorry, brah. Don't about it.

[–]twistedstarr 6 points7 points ago

That's cool...sorry I missed it!

[–]yellowcushion 0 points1 point ago

Yes, we became one of the worlds most stable democracies by not voting and saying fuck it all the time. Very insightful.

[–]shutupjoey 3 points4 points ago

Then they should register their outrage at the voting booth.

[–]proudcanadian3410875 5 points6 points ago

Unfortunately, Canadians don't vote much more than Americans do.

[–]Divine_E 1 point2 points ago

That's because they are afraid of hurting any of the candidate's feelings.

[–]AetherIsWaiting 1 point2 points ago

That's because party representatives call citizens at their houses and tell them voting stations have been moved when they havent

[–]shutupjoey 0 points1 point ago

I know, but the ones that voted have elected Harper thrice now. Can't blame him for pushing forward his ideas anymore, going from a minority to a majority government was his validation.

[–]UpvotesMakeMeMoist 38 points39 points ago

This was photoshopped. Sorry.

[–]cheemster 15 points16 points ago

Also, this is a photo from Wisconsin, not Canada. I am Canadian though :D

[–]quiet_eyes 3 points4 points ago

And they spelled crisis as "crysis".

[–]biurb 7 points8 points ago

funny stuff though, no?

[–]Professor_Oedipus 0 points1 point ago

Also a definite repost. But I'm sure OP checked first.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Still funny.

[–]Supersable 0 points1 point ago

300 000 in Montreal on May 22nd. United States of America, I await your reply!

[–]Tho76 -1 points0 points ago

It's Onion News, a prank/comedy show.

Edit: I have a similar pic from Onion...I think. Anyways, I was wrong.

[–]thelidhathappeal 30 points31 points ago

except for the quebec students protesting, they're kinda crazy

[–]MindlessMind 11 points12 points ago

It's funny because Canada IS experiencing the biggest protest in it's history, I assume. Correct me if I'm wrong.

[–]alexanderfsu 10 points11 points ago

You are in fact correct good sir. Montreal student protests have drawn crowds of over 100,000 and 250,000 people in 2 different occasions and they have been going on for over 100 days. Though they have really started to calm down now. I guess banging pots and pans around for 1/3 of a year gets pretty taxing.

[–]MindlessMind 1 point2 points ago

Yeah! I knew they were getting 6 digit numbers, I just wasn't sure if they had bigger ones earlier in history.

[–]yellowcushion 1 point2 points ago

There have been larger protests in Canada if you look at them country wide, but never so many in one place.

[–]cakekween 0 points1 point ago

I will only ever be grateful to the East for making our syrup and poutine.

[–]Stringer_Bells 0 points1 point ago

Not quite. The entire city of Winnipeg went on strike before.

Bottom corner, Crysis is spelled wrong.......

[–]Balso 0 points1 point ago

Just noticed as well... WTF?!

[–]indiekid22 1 point2 points ago

Obviously photoshopped. Canadians don't say anything that vulgar.

[–]Idontknowwhatscool 1 point2 points ago

This is a repost from two months ago. Way to take credit for someone else's joke, douche bag.

[–]MattDouglass 0 points1 point ago

This. Very funny how this seems to happen MOAR AND MOAR LATELY GOD DAMNIT FUCKING DOUCHES Ghrghllllhhhhhh

[–]F22Rapture 3 points4 points ago

Shepard Smith, fuck yea.

In all seriousness, he's the only person on Fox I either like or trust. I'm not sure whether it was him refusing to air the Shirley Sherrod footage while the rest of them were circlejerking over it, saying on air that the Republicans were on the wrong side of history in the gay marriage debate, or saying "waterboarding, which is, of course, torture."

[–]asdjfsjhfkdjs 2 points3 points ago

Have you seen this clip?

[–]F22Rapture 1 point2 points ago

yup. It was on John Stewart a few weeks ago.

[–]djlaureate 0 points1 point ago

haha I like Shep, too. It's funny how well liked he is by those that call themselves liberals. I like him because he seems non-partisan, and has his head screwed on straight. Apparently in real life he's the nicest person working at Fox if you were to meet them all. Judge Napolitano is also a good man. Lou Dobbs is a jerk, and on TV i really can't stand Eric Bolling.

[–]selective_reading 0 points1 point ago

"In all seriousness,...I'm...circlejerking...on...the Republicans...which is, of course, torture."

[–]MarvinTheAndroid42 1 point2 points ago

Yea, that's about as much rage as we can muster, heaven knows we try. If I were to protest I'd stay on the sidewalk on a closed road and look both ways when I crossed.

[–]KaiserMessa 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that picture from Minnesota?

[–]mopedophile 1 point2 points ago

It is from Wisconsin and the Scott Walker protests.

[–]willymo 0 points1 point ago

Has Fox News ever shown a headline that wasn't "THIS JUST IN: BREAKING NEWS: ON FOX NEWS FIRST: EXCLUSIVE: FIRST HAND LOOK AT: THE BIGGEST, MOST EPIC CANADIAN PROTEST OF ALL TIME."

Scrolling: "Fox news correspondent confirms with 162% factual information that nothing ever will happen this big ever again. EXCLUSIVE!"

Scrolling below that: "Rev. Jimmy John from Alabama claims Jesus predicted this protest in Psalms 13:9."

[–]ePunk6 0 points1 point ago

There's a protest going on in our city and all their signs say are "On Strike".

[–]MpegEVIL 0 points1 point ago

[–]Kiadawg 0 points1 point ago

I've been to the Yukon in the summer time when you need to make sure you keep your warm clothes on you because it still doesn't get hot up there in the middle of July. It's too friggin' cold to protest anything. Why do you think they still have the Can-Can girls up there? Great show though guys. Nothing like it here in the states

[–]nbshark -2 points-1 points ago

That is like the oldest picture on the internet...

Original: http://www.webotes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/93779__upset.png

[–]mopedophile 1 point2 points ago

This picture is less than a year old. It was from protests in Wisconsin last winter. Hardly older than the internet.
