Screw 'em. Buy an old Volvo for 900. Learn it, love it. You will be an infinitely better person four years later, when they have all killed their BMWs and Mini Coopers by oil starvation and you'll have learned how to change an alternator, a set of ball-joints, a water pump, and maybe if you are lucky/unlucky a headgasket.

My first car was a 1990 Skoda Felicia POS and I had to pay ~7,000 USD out of pocket for it. Stop complaining about getting a nice car for FREE as your first car.
