Agreed. I don't know why people are saying it's gross. I put my hand on my chest and felt my heart beat, almost in unison, and was awestruck. The healthy heart does its job so well, and what an elegantly complex design. That heart is a product of hundreds of billions of years of trial and error! And it is only one part of a whole organ system that works together...

very cool.. even though the heart beats, it is not pumping any blood. The blood is being supplied through the aorta where the coronary arteries openings are. these vessels feed the heart and then flow out to the coronary sinus which goes to the right atrium and out the tube.

Well, once you don't have a heart you're dead aren't you? Donor hearts are usually taken from registered donors (if they die in a car accident or something the doctors have permission to take their organs), brain-dead people whose bodies just haven't stopped working yet are also used.

The brain dead were who I was talking about. And death is a funny thing as far as that goes.. Because as long as that heart's cells are still alive, the donor still has pieces of them that are alive - though not their consciousness.
