Definately front page material!

He's getting...covered.

[–]VisuallyImpairedCat 9 points10 points ago

I bet this gets posted on Facebook.

[–]FacsimilousSarcasm 4 points5 points ago

It really epitomeizes the darker aspects of religious inculcation.

[–]DecryptedGaming 0 points1 point ago

(Insert big fancy words here) but yeah

[–]ShadowAssassinQueef 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if they are on the same page.

[–]cleaningallthethings 0 points1 point ago

*Definitely

[–]ignisnex 64 points65 points ago

That shit's creepy. Well played.

[–]ZorkFox 17 points18 points ago

No kidding… that's straight-up high-octane nightmare fuel right there.

[–]AFRUITPIE 6 points7 points ago

The worst part is that the nightmare is real.

[–]MauledByPorcupines 4 points5 points ago

I see my dreams for the rest of the week are all planned out now.

[–]KD87 1 point2 points ago

It would be creepier if instead of holding the guy's hand they were circumcising him, but that would be much more accurate as well.

Mummy, are you my mummy??

[–]ProggyBS 1 point2 points ago

Your reference is fantastic!

[–]mamahoff 0 points1 point ago

Yes Jaime, I am your mummy

[–]droogans 9 points10 points ago

As a young violinist, I can vouch for the times when I saw this happening to some other children, replacing a bible for some sheet music.

It's not always religion that does this stuff.

[–]DatoeDakari 2 points3 points ago

Music is a religion, but it's not based on books(per se) or faith, like the others. It's the truest form of religion there is; it is the worship of the [sound of the] human spirit.

[–]icescoop 9 points10 points ago

I get it. People who literally take up the bible into their heads become narrow-minded people. Great message.

[–]robak69 1 point2 points ago

this is oddly incredibly disturbing

[–]littlerabbitbite 1 point2 points ago

It's the shite anatomy

[–]XandarsMeteor 9 points10 points ago

This one gets an upvote from me every time it's posted...so simple and yet speaks volumes. Getting my head back in shape after pulling that book off has been quite the "hobby."

[–]CamelToad88 9 points10 points ago

First time I've seen it, it's new to me!

[–]Bear10 2 points3 points ago

That is bizarre.... Awesome, but bizarre

[–]lamaface21 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of Coraline

[–]Joly314 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say the same thing. Have an upvote

[–]SaintGenesius 11 points12 points ago

Excellent piece of repost.

That should pretty well cover you against the remaining haters. I say remaining because although I don't think you necessarily need to be viciously attacked, seeing this thing constantly reposted does bug the shit out of me.

[–]hat678 0 points1 point ago

[–]RebelTactics -2 points-1 points ago

It'll be reposted again. What ever happened to repost image bot.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

When Adam and Barbara stretched their faces to scare the Deetz's. I also saw this uncanny resemblance, as it's one of my favorite movies from my childhood.

[–]topchief1 1 point2 points ago

beetlejuice! beetlejuice!......

[–]whilst 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of "capping day" from the tripod books. Which I guess was the point.

[–]DownpoursForAll 2 points3 points ago

Throw in a Star of David and a Islamic Crescent to round it out. Other poisonous ideologies deserve equal representation as well.

[–]padre_pedofilo 2 points3 points ago

[–]RangerRickSC 0 points1 point ago

I kinda want this on a shirt.

[–]DirtySketel 0 points1 point ago

I think next time I fancy an extra 1000 karma, I'll just report this image.

[–]Tron-Gorf 0 points1 point ago

Mine didn't stay on.

[–]DatoeDakari 0 points1 point ago

I think I may have been born with a 'bullshit' helmet.

[–]Zebbedee 0 points1 point ago

Couldn't this be said of atheist parents that raise their children believing there is no God? Every culture tries to bestow it's values to the next generation.

If you are an athiest, what would you do if your child became a born-again christian?

I agree with the sentiment of the picture, just saying that christianity isn't the only things people are brainwashing their children with.

[–]Darrian 2 points3 points ago

How do you brain-wash someone with non-belief? Children aren't born believing in a God, that's something they have to be taught.

That's like saying if I never mention unicorns I'm "brainwashing" my kid into non-unicorn beliefs. It's silly.

[–]Zebbedee 0 points1 point ago

If your child came home and told you that he's thought about it and he believes in God, what would you say to him? Would you respect his decision, or would your try to "brainwash" him by trying to convince him otherwise.

It's a natural human reaction to try to sway others to your point of view, especially when you feel so strongly about it.

[–]C_O_Y_W -5 points-4 points ago

This image is a good example of demonizing propaganda style artwork. While I understand the sentiment and how it applies to many areas in which parents or other socializing agents indoctrinate children, I find this image chilling in how it takes believers (people) and demonizes them.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]C_O_Y_W 5 points6 points ago

I stand corrected.

[–]balbinus 0 points1 point ago

I don't think it's demonizing, or at least I don't take it that way. I don't know much about art so there is probably some official category for this type of thing but to me it reminds of political cartoons that use symbolism to make political point.

I actually really like it.

[–]C_O_Y_W 0 points1 point ago

You're thinking of political satire. Sometimes there is not much difference, but generally when there is a clear target but a less clear principle, you should be skeptical.

"They're bad, because they indoctrinate their children. We're good because we don't."

[–]WeaponsGradeHumanity -1 points0 points ago

Some of them kill their own kids because of their beliefs.
They're demonising themselves man.

[–]C_O_Y_W 0 points1 point ago

There is an interesting effect here at play and this image is just part of it. In any us versus them scenario, the us will declare that each individual is entirely unique, and that any wrong done by its members is the exception and not the rule. The them are much more alike; thinking alike, supporting the same values, and any wrong done by their members is indicative of the faults of the whole group.

This is an extremely common thing to happen and it happens in any group that feels there is another group that opposes them.

Demonizing is one part of it too. Easier to kill monsters like the Japs of WWII if they are depicted like this.

Who is "they", exactly?

[–]WeaponsGradeHumanity 0 points1 point ago

You're right about the whole tribalism thing but do you really mean to say that fundamentalists / extremists don't give moderates a bad name?

There's a difference here; moderate muslims (for instance) and extremist muslims all march to the beat of the same drum while atheists have no drum. Muslims are all alike in that they hold the same book to be holy. Sure, they're different in plenty of other ways but they all have that one thing in common.

In cases like those where a mother will kill her children so that they can go to heaven, it is a wrong done by one person which is indicative of the faults of the whole group. Suicide bombing is an even better example; it takes only one person to load up on explosives and flip the switch but it wouldn't happen if it weren't for a whole society of people telling each other that it's the right thing to do.

The other thing is, religious people have been doing horrible, horrible things all over the world for thousands of years and they're still doing horrible things today. They are the ones making themselves look bad, not anyone else. The image isn't propaganda so much as it's a depiction of what really goes on.

[–]C_O_Y_W -1 points0 points ago

Extremism is present in every group and many people are capable of doing what you describe. A religious cause is often the excuse for horrible people to do horrible things. Atrocities are initiated for other reasons also: Rwanda, Cambodian genocide, North Korean death camps.

It's a shame that after all of the discussion about religious bigotry, religiously motivated crimes against humanity, etc., that posting this sort of image would be celebrated and then justified.

Edit: Spelling

[–]WeaponsGradeHumanity 0 points1 point ago

There is no comparison between religious extremism and, for instance, atheist extremism. Please don't insinuate that there is.

Atrocities (note the spelling) do happen for a range of reasons but religious people have a dogma that instructs them to commit atrocities.

This image is not bigoted. This image is not a crime against humanity. This image is not being celebrated. This image is a metaphoric depiction of something that actually happens.

You're going to need to think more carefully about your future comments.

[–]C_O_Y_W -1 points0 points ago

All I need is history. I also didn't mention atheism. All Horrible people do horrible things. Don't be horrible people. Don't become what you hate.

See the link above for images just like this one. It's a tool.

[–]WeaponsGradeHumanity 0 points1 point ago

And now you're ignoring me outright. Do everyone a favour and read the dictionary until you understand the meaning of the words 'frank and honest discourse'.

[–]C_O_Y_W -1 points0 points ago

How am I ignoring you?

[–]WeaponsGradeHumanity 0 points1 point ago

Do everyone a favour and read the dictionary until you understand the meaning of the words 'frank and honest discourse'.

[–]postguy2 -1 points0 points ago

I find little "good" in brainwashing a child from birth to believe that he's a hopelessly evil wretch who deserves eternal torment as punishment for simply being alive, but if he gets on his knees and submits to the almighty, omnipresent (invisible) God, God will pity him enough to do him the favor of giving him eternal happiness that he does not deserve.

People don't like to think of Christianity that way, but ask any Christian who believes in Hell if an atheist deserves Hell. Their answer will usually be something along the lines of "well, we all do." That is fucking scary. Only indoctrination the likes of which is illustrated in OP's image can accomplish that.

[–]C_O_Y_W 0 points1 point ago

I agree. I don't think that kids who are indoctrinated hold to whatever it is that is forced on them. Parents who indoctrinate their kids lose them somewhat.

Replace the books with violins, or tennis rackets, and you have the same issue.

Unfortunately the message of the image is that these bible heads harm kids and are evil. The characters are no longer human and therefore are more easily discriminated against.

This sort of imagery is less about revealing the truth, intelligent discourse, or finding answers. It's more about marginalizing those we disagree with, providing excuse for our hate, and covering over the rest of the complexity of whole people who are just as unique and individual as anyone else.

I don't get it

Speaking of the experts of INDOCTRINATION.

'We want to be Islamic bombers when we grow up'

"teacher 'forced out' after complaining Muslim pupils praised 9/11 hijackers 'as heroes'"

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1249393/9-11-bombers-heroes-What-Muslim-children-told-Christian-teacher-forced-job-tolerating-racism.html

forced out of his job after complaining that Muslim pupils as young as eight hailed the September 11 hijackers as heroes.

He told a tribunal that he had to leave his £30,000-a-year post because he would not tolerate the 'racist' and 'anti-Semitic' behaviour of Year 4 pupils.

The predominantly Muslim youngsters openly praised Islamic extremists in class and described the September 11 terrorists as 'heroes and martyrs'.

One pupil said: 'Don't touch me, you're a Christian' when he brushed against him.

Others said: 'We want to be Islamic bombers when we grow up', and 'The Christians and Jews are our enemies - you too because you're a Christian'.

[–]S_Dub7 -2 points-1 points ago

Does he get raped before or after this?

[–]huxtiblejones -2 points-1 points ago

I saw this a couple years ago. From the perspective of an artist, it's a good concept but it's a fairly bad execution. You could illustrate this in a way that's very interesting, this looks like a rough sketch by an aspiring manga artist on deviantart. The anatomy could be improved, the composition is pretty static too. A lower camera angle closer to the child and the book would be more menacing and would focus our eyes better.

EDIT: God damn, reddit is just terrible when it comes to art criticism.
