Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

Well, that's, like, his opinion, man.

[–]harvington 123 points124 points ago

Thomas Hildern is actually a huge jerk in the game. Very pompous.

[–]MrFatalistic 35 points36 points ago

Isn't he the one stealing all his work from his assistant?

[–]caustic260 57 points58 points ago

I thought it was more about sending people to their deaths in a bunker laboratory infested with killer spore plants and people completely infested with mutated plant colonies. Especially since he never tells anyone about the previous mercs.

[–]MrFatalistic 20 points21 points ago

Yeah, that too, I think I can recall him giving me the shittiest reward purse for a quest, here's your 25 caps, what a douche.

[–]Perforathor 17 points18 points ago

Actually, the reward is quite big (about one thousand caps) but you have to barter with him to get the full reward.

[–]AaroniusH 2 points3 points ago

You can barter from 25 caps to 1000??

I'll get what he's having!

[–]HexAddict 4 points5 points ago

No that's not it. 1000 caps is the standard reward. You can pass a barter or speech check to get another 600.

[–]iburnchildren 0 points1 point ago

Did you actually deliver the data to him or did you let the ghoul delete it? I delivered the data and I got a pretty decent payoff.

[–]lolmonger 3 points4 points ago

Both.

When you rescue Keely though, Dr. Williams makes it clear that he gets his in front of the ONI supervisors.

[–]caustic260 6 points7 points ago

Bureaucratic Justice? So they're going to put some red ink on his file to punish him for withholding nonsensitive, relevant information which resulted in countless deaths? God bless the NCR!

[–]Steve216 0 points1 point ago

He doesnt work directly for the NCR, he works for the OSI

[–]Necroskowitz 1 point2 points ago

[–]caustic260 0 points1 point ago

Which was the NCR's plan to become independent of the Followers of the Apocalypse so they could run them out of their territory.

[–]Steve216 0 points1 point ago

He just wants the data from the main terminal, and doesnt care about the mercs, hes not insane, nor does he steal co workers work.

[–]yroc12345 2 points3 points ago

He still makes a valid point. His dickitude dosen't delude the truth in his statement.

[–]sTiKyt 9 points10 points ago

No wonder reddit loves him, he's an in-game representation of a redditor.

Arrogant self-described intellectual, quoting an often repeated idea that looks down at idiots. Passing it off as profound when it's really just a tired, old concept that only serves to stroke the ego of whoever is saying it.

[–]ArtificialEnigma 2 points3 points ago

Which is confirmed by the fact that this post got so many upvotes on reddit like /r/gaming.

The funny thing about ideas like this one is that everyone likes them, they just never think it applies to them.

[–]sandwich123 1 point2 points ago

It's funny that you say that, because every day when i see someone make a fool of themselves, whether on facebook, on the news, or just out on the street (yes, i do get out sometimes), and i think about how much of an idiot they are, I realize that they themselves must think they are smart and others are stupid... It makes me wonder, am i actually just one of the idiots?

[–]tonywartooth 0 points1 point ago

Kind of like Charles Bukowski, who said that quote almost to the T.

[–]IDlOT -2 points-1 points ago

I might be a bit on the younger side compared to TBL's typical fan base (20yrs), but did anyone else not find that movie that funny? It had a few catchy lines like this one, but on the whole I can't understand why it's a cult classic.

[–]Jisaw 12 points13 points ago

It wouldn't be a cult classic if everyone loved it.

[–]psykad 7 points8 points ago

Shut the fuck up Donny.

[–]pahncrd 1 point2 points ago

After you deal with a lot more idiots over the next ten years while trying to make a life for yourself, you will probably appreciate the movie more. Sometimes trying to do the simplest things ends up being such a lesson in frustration and insanity.

[–]BananaMangoChutney 2 points3 points ago

It took almost a decade before Ace Ventura quotes went out of style and that was before the internet. we'll be hearing Lebowski quotes for at least twice as long.

[–]Iwokeupwithoutapillo 1 point2 points ago

Ace Ventura quotes are out of style?

Fuck.

[–]BananaMangoChutney 1 point2 points ago

"Do NOT go in there! WOOOOO!"

"Oh... do you have diarrhea? It's diarrhea, isn't it? Lucky for you I carry Benefiber packets. Want one?"

".... no thanks."

[–]psykad 1 point2 points ago

"Bumblebee tuna. Bumblebee tuna. Your balls are showing. Bumblebee tuna."

[–]Jisaw 0 points1 point ago

LIKE A GAH-LOVE!.... oh, shit. You're right.

[–]jean_ralfio 0 points1 point ago

"Donny, you're out of your element."

[–]yourbuddyjoe 110 points111 points ago

This has become the cornerstone description of the reddit community in general.

[–]lukas8u 45 points46 points ago

Notice how the character in the game is a massive asshole.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points ago

Massive assholes have the capacity to be right about things.

[–]zoozoo458 11 points12 points ago

This has become the cornerstone description of the reddit any large human community in general*

[–]yourbuddyjoe -3 points-2 points ago

Upvotes. This is absolutely true. We were telling the idiots 2 years ago to stop inviting digg and then youtube users here to prevent this exact thing from happening.

[–]Laptop_mini 12 points13 points ago

Knowledge is like jam. The less you have of it, the more you spread it.

[–]P33J 1 point2 points ago

don't you want to spread knowledge, even if it is small?

[–]Laptop_mini 2 points3 points ago

Not if its partial. That's when people start interpreting.

[–]Lazman101 0 points1 point ago

No. You should not go around spreading ideas that you do not properly understand because you're either going to teach it wrong or people are going to misconstrue it.

[–]P33J 0 points1 point ago

You accidently some words.

[–]Lazman101 0 points1 point ago

haha so i did

[–]sTiKyt 0 points1 point ago

So is originality.

[–]HashBR 4 points5 points ago

Is it an opinion?!

[–]flip_flap 4 points5 points ago

Yes. Don't you hate it how everyone on reddit is a moron who doesn't know what they're talking about? Apart from me obviously because I'm a genius..

[–]yourbuddyjoe 5 points6 points ago

Not everyone but dumb dumbs have certainly become the majority.

[–]Steve216 0 points1 point ago

Hes just misunderstood, he wants to get his work done, which is to get the plant data from vault 22.

[–]iDownvoteUselessCrap 0 points1 point ago

especialy r/atheism, which is hilariously ironic

[–]BillyBBone 44 points45 points ago

Propaganda theorist Jacques Ellul posits that intellectuals are the group in society that are the most susceptible to propaganda, because of 3 factors:

  • Intellectuals absorb the largest amount of unverified, second-hand information,
  • Intellectuals feel capable of judging the veracity of information for themselves, and
  • Intellectuals feel the need to have an opinion on everything.

I read about this effect in university, and it heavily influenced how I see my own intelligence, and how unreliable it could be. Since then, I've had no qualms about refusing to have an opinion on matters that I don't know intimately. I believe that saying "I don't know" is a show of wisdom, not ignorance.

[–]jimcrator 24 points25 points ago

It seems like he just redefined the term "intellectual" to fit in with his theory.

[–]I_have_a_dog 1 point2 points ago

No, he just misspelled "pseudo-intellectual." Anyone who actually cares about information will check their sources before forming an opinion on it.

[–]BestPseudonym 6 points7 points ago

What if this is propaganda? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE!

[–]Lazman101 2 points3 points ago

Why would they be intellectuals at all then.

[–]NomadE85 4 points5 points ago

Holy shit. I'm... I'm an intellectual. I see the errors of my ways! Fuck.

[–]daysofwineandroses 17 points18 points ago

So...did you just read this and accepted it as true, or did you verify it first?

[–]freerangehuman 1 point2 points ago

Stop confusing us!

[–]cycopl 0 points1 point ago

This is exactly why I never take anything I read on the internet as 100% fact, but I do not fully dismiss the information either because of the chance that it may be true.

[–]The_Living_Lead 0 points1 point ago

I believe that saying "I don't know" is a show of wisdom, not ignorance.

Nice try, Socrates.

[–]IamaRead 12 points13 points ago

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”
― Isaac Asimov

and

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts
― Bertrand Russell

[–]BlueParrot 7 points8 points ago

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. -- Charles Darwin

I'm sure you can find even earlier references to similar statements. I would not be the slightest surprised if it is found in ancient greek philosophy.

[–]odog502 1 point2 points ago

looked in the comments to specifically see if someone posted this Bertrand Russell quote. Upvote.

[–]LeviWasTaken 0 points1 point ago

Good (and familiar) quotes. I've always found that the blunt and simple nature of this one makes it stick in my head:

"Fucking out to stay the hell away from things you know nothing about" - Elliott Smith

[–]valdin450 26 points27 points ago

Reminds me of the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

[–]FlutterShy- 6 points7 points ago

That shit scares me and makes me feel like my music instructors were incompetent. I hear the mistake. Why don't they hear it? Why won't anyone tell me how bad I sound?!

[–]S7evyn 7 points8 points ago

[–]FlutterShy- 4 points5 points ago

I don't know how to respond to this. It seems like refuting it only makes it seem more true. Thanks, though.

[–]Sabojik 3 points4 points ago

[–]FlutterShy- 1 point2 points ago

Dude. When he first picks up the guitar. Fucking impulses, man. "wait, -strum- wait, -strum-"

The true mark of a beginner.

[–]valdin450 1 point2 points ago

I know that feel.

[–]MrFatalistic 1 point2 points ago

Except my ability to assume someone on Reddit will pull up the wiki for a psychological, statistical, or otherwise phenomena that will explain the op - I'm spot on with that.

[–]Winter22 7 points8 points ago

Wise words, from an Npc that sends your character into a death trap for his personal gain...

[–]iTibbles 55 points56 points ago

Now we wait for this to be x-posted to r/atheism.

[–]invalid_data 38 points39 points ago

then to r/politics......

[–]jiowdlfkjweoirh 24 points25 points ago

And it will receive thousands of upvotes, with nearly every individual upvoting blissfully unaware of the irony.

[–]elRinbo 1 point2 points ago

omg.... so true.

[–]tuxxi 0 points1 point ago

Irony? you mean like rain on your wedding day?

[–]CaptainCyprine 4 points5 points ago

It's already x-post from r/Fallout.

[–]savant-garde 0 points1 point ago

"This quote is great. And fuck Islam!"

[–]DoughnutHole 0 points1 point ago

Most likely as an image macro of Richard Dawkins or Neil deGrasse Tyson.

[–]StanleyDarsh22 -1 points0 points ago

yea but it would be ironic cause they dont follow this saying anyway

[–]Angelsofhell12 0 points1 point ago

I came here to post this. But I actully wanted to compare /r/atheism to this too but w/e

[–]rdeari1 3 points4 points ago

Sounds like /r/gaming to me.

[–]scarface910 6 points7 points ago

In my opinion, that's wrong.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

I love the Fallout games. It's probably my favorite series of all time.

[–]Bobthemightyone 2 points3 points ago

Is this in New Vegas, or in one of the New Vegas DLC's?

[–]LtVincentHanna 7 points8 points ago

Vanilla New Vegas. He's the guy in the science lab in the terminal at Camp McCarran.

[–]vadergeek 2 points3 points ago

Wasn't he saying that to send you on a suicide mission?

[–]Sir_WigglesWorth 3 points4 points ago

Free karma to the first person to post this in r/atheism

[–]ElagabalusCaesar 1 point2 points ago

Oh yeah? Well I think Thomas Hildern should shut his trap.

[–]ZapActions-dower 2 points3 points ago

He's a total jackass in the game, taking all the credit for his subordinate's work and sending you into a death trap.

[–]roterghost 1 point2 points ago

The problem is the uneducated are always cock-sure while the intelligent are always doubting themselves.

[–]Red_AtNight 1 point2 points ago

[–]qua_omsa_lajeeone 1 point2 points ago

This is a vague Lao-Tzu reference, I think. Lao-Tzu is quoted as saying "He who knows, does not speak. He who speaks, does not know."

Slightly different, but definitely related. While I don't necessarily agree with the quote, it can be true in many cases. The perfect counter-quote comes from G.K. Chesterton: “And it is always the humble man who talks too much, the proud man watches himself too closely.” Which if you think about it, is also true.

[–]RestlesslyRelaxed 1 point2 points ago

"Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks."

[–]WithJuiceYouLose 1 point2 points ago

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why Obsidian are better writers than any other developer currently in the biz. Well, this and everything else in the game...

[–]3ricss0n 1 point2 points ago

/r/atheism all I go to say

[–]bigcock_obama 1 point2 points ago

Reminded me of a quote... for your consideration: Bertrand Russell: “The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser men so full of doubts.”

[–]TheCount913 2 points3 points ago

OP do some people call you Maurice

[–]The_Space_Cowboy[S] 2 points3 points ago

I've been heard to speak of the pompitous of love

[–]zeophen 3 points4 points ago

Oh, I was thinking of Cowboy Bebop. See you Space Cowboy...

[–]NomadE85 1 point2 points ago

Bang...

[–]cake4chu 0 points1 point ago

This quote is misinformed and very ignorant.

[–]theluisnin 2 points3 points ago

that's what you're supposed to take from in it in the context of the game. The character is an amoral bureaucrat that thinks he's a genius, but really has a lot of misconceptions.

[–]cake4chu 1 point2 points ago

...i know :]

[–]Bobknight -5 points-4 points ago

YOU ARE MISINFORMED AND VERY IGNORANT.

[–]drunxor 0 points1 point ago

Haha, that guy is a huge dick though

[–]lolmonger 0 points1 point ago

Excuse me, Dr. Hildern, while I go farm some XP from Angela Williams.

[–]JasonUncensored 0 points1 point ago

Otherwise, that guy is a dick.

[–]bigfishh 0 points1 point ago

Was talking with someone else on r/politics the other day. He told me I was thinking like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meritocracy .

Supporters of meritocracies do not necessarily agree on the nature of "merit", however they tend to agree that "merit" itself should be a primary consideration during evaluation. <

[–]seemooreth 0 points1 point ago

Reply girrls postin' evary daaaay

[–]ChargedCable 0 points1 point ago

And after he said this I shot him into a bloody mess.

[–]CreamFraiche 0 points1 point ago

reddit in a nut shell

[–]mmtrjh01 0 points1 point ago

I literally just played this mission yesterday...

[–]New_Anarchy 0 points1 point ago

Your opinion, since it's not mine, is worthless. My opinion, on the other hand, is full of wisdom and truth, even if I'm arguing that sticks hurt more than stones...

[–]rDr4g0n 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps having uniformed opinions is ok, whereas sharing them is not.

[–]oranurpianist 0 points1 point ago

So, i guess this applies to whatever groups are disliked by the reddit hivemind, the religious for example.

...But when it comes to real controversies in science, every ignorant armchair ''skeptic'' know-it-all has a respected, scientific-looking opinion about things he has no idea, and that's ok. I guess those wise words do not apply in this case, are they? Everyone knows that we 're nothing more than chemical robots, right? The right approach to the mysteries of life is forcefully applying dead-matter chemistry onto living-matter biophysics, right? No opinions there, right? That's real science, right?

[–]DrBarrell 0 points1 point ago

"If you perform too poorly, they'll scrub you out. Perform too well, and you'll get sent to the front lines. All I have to do is ride that mediocrity gradient" More life lessons from Fallout: New Vegas

[–]virgiliart 0 points1 point ago

Opinions are like assholes - everyone's got one and they're all full of shit.

[–]danielgrak 0 points1 point ago

I love the creepy-as-fuck neck-crane that the people in Fallout do to talk to you when you're behind them. Oh Bethesda, when will you make it out of the uncanny valley!

[–]emphaticleech 0 points1 point ago

So they still have reddit in New Vegas, then?

[–]brosenfeld 0 points1 point ago

The M33 galaxy sucks Andromeda's ass.

[–]rockdaboat 0 points1 point ago

I see he has browsed r/politics.

[–]ForcedSim 0 points1 point ago

I am now going to send this to any PC gamer that hates on consoles.

[–]CaptLavender 0 points1 point ago

I feel like this is taken out of context since this guy is a condescending asshole ingame.

[–]rawrgs 0 points1 point ago

This quote makes me feel shitty. I'm going to shut up for a year now.

[–]Raikunoso 0 points1 point ago

But aren't the words he is saying actually opinions? Does that make him the ignorant one?

http://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/ua9c5/wise_words/

[–]The_Space_Cowboy[S] 20 points21 points ago

Forgive me, I forgot that when something is posted on the internet everyone everywhere has automatically seen it

[–]ToInfinity_MinusOne 0 points1 point ago

Credit where credit is due.

[–]Psylock524 1 point2 points ago

It's best to assume that if it has existed for more than 2 minutes, reddit has already seen it.

[–]AcidicSuperSam 6 points7 points ago

I haven't seen this, so I am happy he posted it.

[–]Polnadian 0 points1 point ago

Complaining about reposts is more annoying than reposts. So stop complaining.

[–]ToInfinity_MinusOne -2 points-1 points ago

I am fine with reposts. But deliberately stealing someone else's post is a completely different matter.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I love seeing this rehashed and front paged on reddit every other day.

[–]flip_flap 0 points1 point ago

It's funny how everyone reading this believes they're the exception. 'Oh yeah everyone else is a moron. Not me though'.

This isn't a wise saying. Calling everyone else ignorant is possibly the laziest thing someone could do.

[–]THEMCV 0 points1 point ago

This is an x-post from /r/Fallout.

[–]Justify_87 -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

[–]Montybrython -2 points-1 points ago

Also known as every church!

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Are people in this thread actually trying to be contrary to this quote.

no seriously.

ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Should have posted this in r/atheism

[–]RedhandedMan 1 point2 points ago

Should have been more original.

[–]RxMario -2 points-1 points ago

Sometimes video games have better quotable quotes than movies.

[–]tauroid -1 points0 points ago

This is an incredibly rude, pompous and unconstructive viewpoint and I would hope everyone realises it, or you're falling victim to a very great irony.

[–]AgentGinger149 -1 points0 points ago

Yessss. I love this. I hate it when people express opinions. Totally up voted.

Is this from 3 or New Vegas... Probably 3, since it was better

[–]Vectoor 7 points8 points ago

Greenish = Fallout 3, Orangeish = New Vegas.

[–]orangebomb 2 points3 points ago

You can edit the colors though!

[–]ispellgoodly 4 points5 points ago

Not the text. There's literally an orangish tint in the air in FNV and a greenish one in fallout 3.

[–]orangebomb 2 points3 points ago

Good eye, friend! TIR (Today I Realize).

[–]RedhandedMan 0 points1 point ago

I fairly certain you could change that too.

[–]ispellgoodly 1 point2 points ago

There are mods to remove it, but it's not a setting.

[–]RedhandedMan 1 point2 points ago

Sorry I misread your comment, I thought you were saying that you couldn't change the text.
