Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

So this was on your FB newsfeed too huh?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Portions are the same. Namely the bottom part not covered by your finger.

[–]KindlyKickRocks 2 points3 points ago

Nope the top one still looks red to me.

EDIT: Aww sick nvm, just moved my finger, now it's green. How does that work?

[–]ApostropheEverything 4 points5 points ago

red

green

Dude, what's wrong with your eyes?

[–]NewAccount89 1 point2 points ago

What kind of sorcery is this?

[–]lordeddardstark 5 points6 points ago

The image uses your computer's camera to determine if you've placed your finger as directed then adjusts the colors so that they match. It's pretty simple actually. I'm a a computer programmer (Visual Basic GUI, specifically) so I know these things.

[–]deckman 1 point2 points ago

Wow, technology these days never cease to amaze me.

[–]SirAwesomelot 1 point2 points ago

...was anybody else's first instinct that they were the same shade?

[–]lightbreaksthrough 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be seeing/not seeing here.

[–]DemonMuffins 1 point2 points ago

I saw this on facebook twice in the last month. Is this what reddit has come down to?

I thought we were higher in the food chain :(

[–]Lostcory 1 point2 points ago

So no one is going to link the source on did-you-kno.tumblr.com/ That was posted a ridiculously long time ago with less annoying edits?

[–]time_to_strike 1 point2 points ago

I was putting my finger vertically for like five minutes :(

[–]isysdamn 2 points3 points ago

They look like the same shade of grey, other than the actual gradient in the middle and borders. This is one of the crappier relational optical illusions, the main effect is that the top one is darker on average than the bottom due to the gradients on the edges. Use your thumbs to cover up the sides of the tiles and you'll see what I am talking about.

[–]ballsdeepinyourmind 0 points1 point ago

They didn't appear the same to me until I blocked out the backgrounds with my finger. Am I retarded?

[–]deckman 0 points1 point ago

Sorry, but yes, yes you are.

[–]Twiddlez 0 points1 point ago

Glad I didn't take that bet!

[–]MABred 0 points1 point ago

Am I doing this wrong?

[–]Radico87 0 points1 point ago

Hey, congrats, you're found something interesting on reddit to put on reddit.

FUUU

[–]Darkblitz9 0 points1 point ago

The problem with this: It assumes shade created from lighting affects color directly. Any two colors can be made to look the same with proper lighting. In actuality these are two different colors which look to be the same just because of the light. So no, they're not the same color, they just look like they are.

Keynote: The top box is angled toward the sky while the bottom is angled toward the ground, which creates the lighting. You can tell by the slightly trapezoidal shapes of the boxes.

[–]Stevoh 0 points1 point ago

What? WHAT?

...

WHAT!?

[–]danielwb 0 points1 point ago

Can someone explain this?

[–]friedsushi87 4 points5 points ago

The contrast between the boxes and the light/dark backgrounds makes your brain think they're different shades. Plus the gradual gradient in the center where they meet differentiates the blocks enough so this mis perception can be enhanced

[–]Esch_A_Sketch 0 points1 point ago

Indeed; Let's all give a big "whoop whoop" for Simultaneous Contrast!

It's not perfectly by definition, but pretty close in my opinion!

[–]everydayfromwork 0 points1 point ago

You're close. I can't articulate it much better, but danielwb, you should know that color is mainly determined by what surrounds it, not what it actually is.

[–]Esch_A_Sketch 0 points1 point ago

This depends - a big field of Purple will look like purple. It my look brighter or greyed depending on the colors placed around it, but it will still look like purple. Let's not forget that color is a wavelength of light; A blue pigment will absorb all other wavelengths of light, and reflect that particular blue wavelength to our eyes.

Smaller amounts, on the other hand (Like Saturday Afternoon [Sunday?] On the Island of La Grande Jatte) mix to the eye, even though they're unmixed dots of color (red dots, next to yellow dots, next to blue dots, etc..), and they may not necessarily be the correct ones. Chuck Close has some work that uses this principle - but they're circles inside of circles.

Photographic portraits use this as well when they take smaller photos of various times during the day, various employees, and combine them as smaller, less than 1 CM by 1 CM images to create the shades of color needed to give us the impression of the human face.

It's a repost.
