This is the second gif I've seen of a bear waving. I wonder if there have been any studies of bear mimicry?

[–]anAccountUntaken 137 points138 points ago

I wonder how cognizant they are. I wonder if they're actually trying to communicate.

"He's waving. I should wave too, whatever that means."

[–]Sarkosity 198 points199 points ago

"Fuck you too, buddy!"

[–]Awesomeade 62 points63 points ago

I'm not your buddy, guy.

[–]RojoDiablo 51 points52 points ago

I'm not your guy, friend.

[–]Admiral_Amsterdam 42 points43 points ago

I'm not your friend, pal.

[–]Nictionary 27 points28 points ago

I'm not your pal, bro.

[–]Kidsturk 33 points34 points ago

I'm not your bro, mate.

[–]JustLikeMyDick 37 points38 points ago

I'm not your mate, cunt.

[–]poignard 110 points111 points ago

I actually am your cunt

[–]Ragecomicwhatsthat 3 points4 points ago

I'm not your cunt, dick.

[–]hogey11 1 point2 points ago

never lame! comedy genius!

[–]AGODDAMNKODIAKBEAR 55 points56 points ago

Actually, few people realize this but he is trying to distract you while the others sneak up from behind.

Source: I'm a bear.

[–]Realsan 13 points14 points ago

FUCK, you ARE a bear! You should do an AMA!

[–]killroy901 1 point2 points ago

First question.... When did bears learn to use the Internet?

[–]stevenjev 1 point2 points ago

[–]GuyMeetsWall 1 point2 points ago

Totally want to call you out for being a novelty account, but bears can wave back now.

Sky's the limit, man.

[–]red321red321 2 points3 points ago

in bear culture a wave means 'go fuck your mother'

[–]LeonardNemoysHead 7 points8 points ago

"Send more salmon"

[–]Akiba89 1 point2 points ago

I don't wanna be left out!

[–]janisjoplinsjewelry 41 points42 points ago

They are retired show bears so its from lots of training.

[–]MF-Brofist 43 points44 points ago

IIRC, its simple Pavlovian conditioning. When they mimic a wave, they're more likely to get food from the guests.

[–]A_Little_Gray 4 points5 points ago

Shoot ... that's why I wave, too.

[–]thedeejus 11 points12 points ago

Sounds like you just came up with your doctoral dissertation topic for your PhD in comparative psychology!

[–]Ragecomicwhatsthat 2 points3 points ago

Speaking of that,

When are you getting your PhD in dick-analyzation?

[–]mhmyesindeed 7 points8 points ago

Many of the Russian circus bears were trained to wave back with an apple as a reward. One of them lives in a California zoo and will wave back but get visibly upset if not given an apple afterwards. My psych teacher told us about it to teach spontaneous recovery.

[–]Egotistical 6 points7 points ago

The last time I saw two waving bears behind a small fence was at the Olympic Game Farm Park in Sequim, WA. If I recall correctly, they were older circus bears and would do tricks for food.

[–]uncleevil 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's where this was taken. I remember there were a lot of seagulls all over the park and it looks like they were in this .gif aswell.

[–]FrenchieSmalls 2 points3 points ago

This has got to be the Olympic Game Park. Very little doubt in my mind.

[–]wilddrake 364 points365 points ago

while waving bear is cool, it seems slightly dangerous given the only thing keeping them apart is a simple linked fence.

[–]bigups43 160 points161 points ago

My guess is its a charged fence.

[–]InfernoOmni 544 points545 points ago

What was the fence charged with? Battery?

[–]The_MAZZTer 532 points533 points ago

Obstruction.

[–]H_E_Pennypacker 268 points269 points ago

[–]drewniverse 40 points41 points ago

Always skeptical to click something that says 'cp' - I however left amused.

[–]ParliPro 11 points12 points ago

How else would you feel clicking on CP?

[–]rsheahen 22 points23 points ago

Hard?

[–]radbrad7 12 points13 points ago

Guilty as charged.

[–]noseeme 11 points12 points ago

Well, fuck. Might as well lock me away with Sandusky now. All I ask is for some napkins before you haul me off.

[–]Meades_Loves_Memes 1 point2 points ago

Jesus, I clicked the RES image button before reading the sentence.... That was close...

[–]TheTragicReturn 1 point2 points ago

I honestly thought it was going to be a picture of pedobear, since this post has bears in it. I didn't even think it would be... you know.

[–]RadiantSun 14 points15 points ago

Can't top that. Well done, gents.

[–]vanostran 4 points5 points ago

Hey Pennypacker, how are you?

[–]H_E_Pennypacker 4 points5 points ago

Fancy seeing you here doc. GGiddy up

[–]vanostran 5 points6 points ago

I was just thinking about getting the meat slicer out.

[–]H_E_Pennypacker 5 points6 points ago

I thought Bob Sacamano was borrowing it

[–]Halostar 9 points10 points ago

Actually, I think it was charged too much; it wants a refund.

Probably yes, a car battery.

[–]DrStrangeFate 14 points15 points ago

Stopping our constitutional right to "Bear Arms"

[–]Gs305 4 points5 points ago

I don't care how high a voltage (amperage) that fence is it's now going to stop a 1200 lb animal barreling at it at 20 mph.

Edit: I did a no-look with those numbers by the way.

[–]StrewwelChris 5 points6 points ago

It doesn't have to. It only has to stop them when they're initially exploring and testing their boundaries.

[–]Lord-Longbottom 1 point2 points ago

(For us English aristocrats, I leave you this 20 mph -> 53760.0 Furlongs/Fortnight) - Pip pip cheerio chaps!

[–]CyanideSeashell 12 points13 points ago

Well that clears things up.

[–]Se7en_Sinner 15 points16 points ago

pfft bears are too cute to be dangerous

[–]Ardonius 29 points30 points ago

Nice try, bear.

[–]killroy901 4 points5 points ago

Yeah on sure it would love to give you a big bear hug... BEFORE IT RIPS YOUR FACE APART!!!

[–]astrograph 1 point2 points ago

In related news, redditor jigglemybuff was found dead in a bear costume presumably trying to fit in a group

[–]gmnitsua 29 points30 points ago

I read somewhere that it's easy to fool bears into thinking they cannot break small structures such as string or wire if they are trained that way from an early age.

[–]Charwinger21 33 points34 points ago

Same with anything. Even humans. It's basic Pavlovian conditioning.

[–]Reddit_Script 8 points9 points ago

See: religion

[–]lolkaoru 15 points16 points ago

SO BRAVE

[–]stevenjev 2 points3 points ago

I think thats how they train elephants...

[–]smashoomph 3 points4 points ago

[–]Maverick119 8 points9 points ago

As you can see this is a facility for mentally challenged bears.

[–]killroy901 5 points6 points ago

I'm sure there is no need to worry. Bear seemed friendly enough

[–]Sensi-Yang 2 points3 points ago

There could be a huge ditch between the fence and the person

[–]Grawll 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. Very dangerous. It all starts with learning a simple wave, but before you know it they'll be driving cars. Uninsured cars at that. Think of the catastrophic events soon to come.

[–]HiImTed 217 points218 points ago

the bear is thinking "Hi, food!"

[–]Palikk 60 points61 points ago

Gosh, I read that in Jim Gaffigan's falsetto voice.

[–]Bazing1980 33 points34 points ago

hot pocket.

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 38 points39 points ago

[–]radbrad7 9 points10 points ago

Why does this guy talk about food so much?

[–]MinnesotaBlizzard 9 points10 points ago

I wasn't even thinking that but now I am..

[–]astrograph 1 point2 points ago

hotttttt pockettttt

[–]H_E_Pennypacker 11 points12 points ago

I didn't know he was gonna be doing bear jokes

[–]tinfins 1 point2 points ago

If he does another bear joke I'm gonna kill 'im

[–]esfisher 4 points5 points ago

eat freeessshhh

[–]MMZephyr 1 point2 points ago

Moses, I think you've been burning some bush.

[–]AGODDAMNKODIAKBEAR 125 points126 points ago

A bear will never hurt you. Bears are peaceful creatures that live solely on berries and honey. Bears are naturally more afraid of you than you are of them. When you see a bear, don't be afraid. Don't act threatening or branding any sharp objects or explosive weapons. These will merely antagonize the bear and place additional unnecessary strain on human/bear relations. If a bear waves to you, it is an invitation to a friendly hug. You can trust bears.

[–]sytar6 49 points50 points ago

If a bear waves to you, it is an invitation to a friendly hug.

Wait a minute...you're a bear!

[–]theimpolitegentleman 2 points3 points ago

Haha bear hug.

[–]HomuNyan 1 point2 points ago

Not just any bear, he's AGODDAMNKODIAKBEAR.

[–]iamafriendlybear 12 points13 points ago

This guy is legit.

[–]GratefulTeacher 5 points6 points ago

Right-ee-oh there, Mr. Treadwell.

[–]That_1_question_guy 5 points6 points ago

Nice try, you goddamn kodiak bear.

[–]StrewwelChris 2 points3 points ago

I once saw a bear and didn't get mauled. The story checks out.

[–]Neghtasro 1 point2 points ago

Well played, sir. Well played indeed.

[–]demidevigirl 1 point2 points ago

[–]cattailmatt 5 points6 points ago

Yes, brown bears would be one of the funniest animals on the face of the plannet if they weren't so damned dangerous and didn't regard us as breakfast.

[–]Bazing1980 13 points14 points ago

Brown bears are really unlikely to kill a person to eat them. Generally they are pretty lazy about their food gathering. And most Bear attacks involve them feeling threatened, not hungry.

[–]ponto0 1 point2 points ago

except when its spring, theyre lean and mean after dieting and theyre hungry as hell

[–]7ink 1 point2 points ago

bears, beats, battlestar galactica

[–]Abedeus 3 points4 points ago

"Teddy, don't play with food! And stop making weird gestures before dinner!"

[–]John_Wang 2 points3 points ago

[–]woodchuck_pie 5 points6 points ago

I just laughed way too hard at this comment. It's so true.

[–]Breathing_Balls 33 points34 points ago

Don't laugh. You're next.

[–]woodchuck_pie 5 points6 points ago

I look forward to my day of battle.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Bazing1980 5 points6 points ago

Actually most bears are carrion meat eaters, and very unlikely to kill a mammal to eat it.

[–]woodchuck_pie 5 points6 points ago

Whoa! Crazy facts. I always thought they ate fresh meats. Like salmon, deer, and human children left unattended in the wilderness.

[–]MRAGE87 8 points9 points ago

Nope. Nowadays its just the people on bath salts doing that.

[–]AGODDAMNKODIAKBEAR 4 points5 points ago

I thoroughly agree. Bears rarely kill, and never without a signed and notarized death waiver.

We should all work to dispel these kind of myths. I commend you on your efforts to shine light on the darkness that is ignorance of bear behavior.

[–]arksien 202 points203 points ago

Sometimes when I'm out I wave at total strangers and act super friendly just to see how many pretend to know me secretly acting embarrassed that they don't remember who I am.

[–]Stridepack 295 points296 points ago

You are a very special kind of asshole.

[–]red321red321 77 points78 points ago

Sometimes, when I'm aware that someone is going to walk through the same door as me, I deliberately speed up to create an awkward distance before I hold the door for them and beam a super-eager smile their way.

[–]Akiba89 57 points58 points ago

but right when they get close enough. Stop smiling. :D.........:|

[–]gyanos422 8 points9 points ago

Them close it in their face

[–]Zaniel 1 point2 points ago

Then follow them home and rape them.

[–]all_knowing_fish 6 points7 points ago

some people just want to watch the world burn.

[–]expwnent 8 points9 points ago

Pro tip: see if you can hear one of their friends use their name in conversation just before you do this.

[–]Secularpride 12 points13 points ago

I wave at attractive girls...they usually look frightened...

[–]StrewwelChris 44 points45 points ago

Next time, try waving with your hand.

[–]SkaveRat 2 points3 points ago

What if you actually know them, and you have forgotten, but they not?

[–]Se7en_Sinner 113 points114 points ago

[–]AddNine 81 points82 points ago

God damn it, another person wants me to wave.

[–]VirtualAnarchy 88 points89 points ago

[–]RockBlock 17 points18 points ago

That is just fucking adorable.

[–]Yoyo8 42 points43 points ago

"stupid humans. I swear if I could get my hands on one, I'll tear their..Ooh heyyyy...bastards."

[–]ironshackle 20 points21 points ago

OH HEY GURL!

[–]GoodguyGerg 11 points12 points ago

would've been funnier if the bear just stared her down

It would've been funny if the bear flipped her off.

You get them to wave by tossing salmon

[–]janisjoplinsjewelry 24 points25 points ago

Its just white bread. This is at the Game Farm in Sequim, WA. Its actually a really sad place.

[–]FirstTimeWang 10 points11 points ago

I want to slap some armor on that bear and ride him around while he slaughters his captors.

Oh, I just read the description and went with that, thanks for the tip

[–]gapball 1 point2 points ago

It's actually wheat Only now.

They make awesome shirts with buffaloes on them.

But yeah actually a long long long long drive from Seattle.

I'm sick of people associating everything in Washington with Seattle.

EDIT

By the way, those bears used to either be in the circus, or worked in Disney movies, or were rescues.

[–]Yoyo8 1 point2 points ago

I love to give this bear and bro moment High five.

[–]asdfman123 26 points27 points ago

Ever done that thing where you think you see someone you know at a distance, so you wave just in case? Once I did that to someone on the Stanford campus who happened to be Blake Ross, one of the creators of the Firefox project.

I'm pretty sure he thought I was a geeky stalker.

[–]dd_123 16 points17 points ago

I was waiting in line to pay for food in a supermarket a few months ago when someone at the other side of the shop waved at me and said hello. Although I didn't have my glasses on and couldn't make out their face, it was obvious from their relaxed gesture that we knew each other well, so I gave them a wave back.

Turns out there was someone behind me in the queue that they were trying to get the attention of. To be honest, the waver seemed more awkward about it than me - he slinked away without speaking to his friend.

I always wear my glasses when going outside now.

[–]The_MAZZTer 2 points3 points ago

If I catch it before it's too late I pretend I was waving at someone behind them.

[–]BadAdviceAboutBears 27 points28 points ago

Waving at a bear is actually the best form of defense when encountering a bear in the wild, once the bear starts waving the hiker should immediately charge the bear in an attempt to knock it off balance onto it's back. Once on it's back bears can't roll over without the help of other bears in the area.

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points ago

[–]Gr8WhiteGrammarNazi 0 points1 point ago

IS THIS THE KARMA TRAIN?

[–]keagmcG 2 points3 points ago

That man looks like he's having a seizure.

[–]Rubin0 2 points3 points ago

Nope. He was just waving to the guy behind me.

[–]aryaf 2 points3 points ago

I always thought the bear was thinking something like, "Look at this asshole waving at me, yeah I can do that too! DEERRRRRRRRRR. Idiot."

[–]bigToe_Siamese 2 points3 points ago

Well I'm legally blind. I can see people from very far, but I have no clue who they are until they're 6 feet away from me, unless they wear very recognizable shirt / hair / bear pelt, etc. So I've found ways to smile in a friendly yet non committal manner. One effect is that an average work conversation with me is done as we both walk away from each other, backward because as we walked by, I just realized who you were and that I needed to tell you something.

[–]Jakeneck 2 points3 points ago

I like beeping my horn and waving at elderly people as I drive by. They always wave back and smile. They have no idea who I am but they probably feel good that someone took the time out to wave at them.

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 1 point2 points ago

Waving bear has nothing on fistbump monkey.

[–]Breathing_Balls 0 points1 point ago

Does that involve monkeys and fisting?

You have my full attention now.

[–]StewieBanana 1 point2 points ago

So, is that just like a thing bears do?

[–]Spookaboo 1 point2 points ago

[–]Anticitizen-Zero 1 point2 points ago

If that's a kodiak, then that fence isn't really doing much. Electrically charged or not.

Glad it's friendly!

[–]strangeclouds 1 point2 points ago

Those are big motherfuckers

[–]UncreativeMe 1 point2 points ago

[–]Blake2819 1 point2 points ago

[–]thatguyferg 1 point2 points ago

Just like how someone will say 'hi' or yell 'ferg!' and instead of just saying yo or something back I look at them and have to process it for a second...makes things pretty damn awkward.

[–]homohominilupus 1 point2 points ago

That's adorable.

Just funny how a bloodthirsty beast can be friendly, all it takes is a small fence :P

[–]Jackson44 1 point2 points ago

OP hasn't been to a small town, driving down main street might as well be a parade

[–]matthewmora 1 point2 points ago

turns out they are waving to someone behind you

[–]dtrainusmc 1 point2 points ago

I love how the "fence" looks like a bunch of plastic 6-pack rings tied together at shin level.

Surely that will stop 4 tons of fucking bear.

[–]shitterplug 1 point2 points ago

I have people honk and wave at me on a regular basis... I'm not even a popular person. It's a little unnerving at times.

[–]superwu 1 point2 points ago

and then you realize they arent waving to you

[–]musicrages 1 point2 points ago

he's all like "hey guys"

[–]My_Name_Is_Duane 1 point2 points ago

My name is Duane

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]putzmiester 1 point2 points ago

Hey OP you shouldn't use your real name as your reddit name, now I know that you are Karman Igger!

[–]SoFlyTooHigh 1 point2 points ago

There's 2 big fucking bears and only that pussy ass fence is in the way? Chuck Norris must have been the guy waving to the bears.

[–]telepepper 2 points3 points ago

Cutest thing I've seen in a while. Too bad your name sucks, whitey.

[–]Quasarist 0 points1 point ago

Obviously gaming for a lunch of Snagged Gull, not waving at the simple tourist.

[–]0011110000110011 0 points1 point ago

I enjoy going to the boardwalk and waving at/high fiving random people I don't know to see how many of them wave/high five back.

[–]SpoonyJank 1 point2 points ago

I enjoy drinking outside of a bar, behind the railing. I high-five the crowds that walk by in straight lines down the sidewalk and say "good game" over and over without any enthusiasm.

[–]afiq1996 0 points1 point ago

Every single day

[–]Popxorcist 0 points1 point ago

I used to have this problem, then I got glasses.

[–]rauf107 0 points1 point ago

Oh hai

[–]human_beans 0 points1 point ago

I remember years ago during the first wave of the awful Fox Network, When Animals Attack, there was a segment on a mentally disordered young man at a zoo who believed that the bears were waving to him. Beckoning him into their enclosure. According the program, the man, encouraged by the waving, climbed the fence and was mauled.

[–]xNinjahz 0 points1 point ago

Waving as a kid: "Aw how cute" Waves back Waving as an adult "Who the hell is that?" Awkward half raised hand

[–]permixtum 0 points1 point ago

wax on, wax off
