There's the surface level awareness, the understanding that the gif is poking fun at r/trees' propensity to upvote the same shit over and over.

Then there's a higher level where there's the understanding that not only does r/trees upvote the same shit over and over but that the gif itself has been constantly reposted essentially becoming a self-parody.

Next we move onto yet a higher level where there's an awareness not only of the reposting shittiness of r/trees and the meta nature of the gif itself being reposted, but that this the same type of analysis I'm making regarding the reposting nature and meta-joke has itself been reposted from the comments when this gif was posted last.

Up above that is the awareness of the bottom two levels and the awareness of the reposting of commentary on the two levels below, but also the recognition of this commentary on the commentary. And that this meta-commentary will emerge next time with yet another additional layer of abstraction.

I think it's a volcanic cloud that has attracted lightning, the glow of the lava and the bright lightning complement one another and depict a quite an apocalyptic image. The only suitable response is "DAMN NATURE, YOU SCARY".
