When there are two words in a recaptcha, one of which is readable, and the other of which is more-"wtf?", the second word is one which was scanned, and which recaptcha is using your input to generate a croud-sourced "OCR" translation for.

The way this works is, if enough people type the same answer in as the translation for a given text, that is taken as the "real" answer, and will be used in scan-to-text translations of hard to scan books, and as training for OCR systems. ("training" meaning telling an automated system what it should guess as the text when it encounters similar-looking images in the future)

Because the system doesn't actually know the answer for the scanned image (it's asking you for an answer, so it can make a better guess later), you can put whatever you want for that one, and it will be accepted. That's why posts like this sometimes end in "the funniest part is: it was accepted!", you could have typed literally anything in there, as that part isn't actually used to verify who you are, it's just used to tell machines in the future what to tell people the text says if it's ever asked.

To break it down a bit further: say it gives that scan to 100 people. 90 of them say the answer was a random string of characters (because they were spambots, not humans, 9 says "Cobbler," and one says "'ɹǝlqqoɔ". Because "Cobbler," is the answer which people guessed the most, the system can guess that this is the real translation of the scan, and in the future it will lean towards producing that as its real answer, whenever it sees text which looks like that. (It's pretty clever, really, and at this point the accuracy is pretty damn good, which is why "upside-down" and other "truly odd" text is seen more often these days. (they've run out of trivial things that they can't figure out with a high degree of accuracy). This whole "what do people most-often guess?" thing is a pretty good way of finding out what things mean, and has come to be relied on as a very good method of OCR training. The simple concept of "if people guess it, we should use that for future scans" works.

That is why whenever you can tell which part is machine-generated, and which part is a scan, your answer for the scan-part should always be penis.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago

Tldr : enter the word "penis" for the second word always

[–]ExK4 22 points23 points ago

You can work together with /b/ by using the word "nigger" instead.

[–]bastian1343 2 points3 points ago

They're still doing that? I wouldn't have thought anyone there had that kind of attention span.

[–]PaperyPaper 1 point2 points ago

I havent been there for 3 years and still regularly do it.

[–]bastian1343 0 points1 point ago

Good luck to Google Books, then.

[–]skztr 0 points1 point ago

Not always the second word. It is pretty easy to tell which is the "scan", though

[–]skztr 0 points1 point ago

[–]UnKamenRider 8 points9 points ago

I have no idea why I read that whole post, but you should post that in r/mildlyintersting

[–]Lcabinspace 14 points15 points ago

/r/mildlyinteresting for the lazy.

[–]Hiredgoonthug 18 points19 points ago

Huh, that subreddit is kinda neat I guess

[–]Technicolored 6 points7 points ago

Its almost like you were...mildly interested!

Somebody cue up the sunglasses!

[–]cheddarz 2 points3 points ago

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH

[–]limbstan 1 point2 points ago

That's the joke.

[–]SoFaKiNg42 1 point2 points ago

Can't tell the differnce between /r/mildlyinteresting and the rest of reddit..

[–]UnKamenRider 0 points1 point ago

Because it's mostly screen caps of Reddit. Every ten or so posts, you might say , "hmm."

[–]Whelks -1 points0 points ago

/r/mildlyintersting doesn't exist; /r/mildlyinteresting on the other hand, does.

[–]fcman 1 point2 points ago

This, I always type 'mangina' or something similar to make digital books a bit more interesting.

[–]WHYtrollsWHY 0 points1 point ago

[–]maschlue 47 points48 points ago

the last letter should have been capital. Otherwise very well done.

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 22 points23 points ago

I couldn't imagine the fury if I put in that much effort and captcha rejected it.

[–]stackbab 17 points18 points ago

Remember the "flood captcha with the word nigger" thing from 4chan? They explained how captcha works. The first word is the word that will be checked, the second word is a word which automated programs couldn't decipher, which now you as a user do.

[–]Tasgall 12 points13 points ago

Which word is the "real" word alternates randomly

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

You can always tell which is the real one since they all use the same font

[–]stackbab 3 points4 points ago

yes, you are right, somehow I forgot that.

[–]AlmostNPC 2 points3 points ago

Usually it is the word that you can read the easiest.

[–]re7erse 5 points6 points ago

technically, that's how reCAPTCHA works. reCAPTCHA uses the CAPTCHA system to assist with digitizing books. CAPTCHA doesn't require that second word.

[–]stackbab 5 points6 points ago

TIL there's a difference between these two. Thanks!

[–]sje46 4 points5 points ago

Dude, you can't hotlink funnyjunk, man.

[–]s00pafly 9 points10 points ago

I considered that, but I had to try. The thought of using their bandwidth without getting them ad revenue was too tempting.

[–]stackbab 1 point2 points ago

Seems like you can't deeplink on funnyjunk...

[–]rderekp -2 points-1 points ago

What a bunch of douches.

[–]CaptainEskimo 1 point2 points ago

I'm still pretty shocked at how many people lose their shit over captcha. "How am I supposed to type that word!?". You can put literally anything in for the second word

[–]stackbab 4 points5 points ago

And if everyhing fails there will be this tiny button with two arrows in a circle which gives you two new words. I know what you mean.

[–]N69sZelda 1 point2 points ago

have you ever tried the Sound/Audio captcha... impossible.

[–]ManagerOfFun 0 points1 point ago

and instead of answering it with "cobbler," as it should be, he does this lol

[–]sje46 0 points1 point ago

Which is hilarious, because it would probably take like 1 whole minute for the reCaptcha folks to make it so a word needs, say, 15 confirmations of a string being "nigger" instead of the default 5, making the odds of the nigger recaptcha campaign being successful even more astronomical than it already was. It's so representative of 4chan...their Fight Club emulating but totally inept plans.

[–]stackbab 2 points3 points ago

I wonder if there's any book in a digital version with which they were successful.

[–]RafeVL 0 points1 point ago

do you have a link to the thing from 4chan?

[–]stackbab 3 points4 points ago

[–]trance_addict 0 points1 point ago

effort

Google 'text flipper' or anything along those lines.

'ɹǝןqqoɔ

[–]Tasgall 1 point2 points ago

Also, the ' should have been an upside down ,

[–]AlRubyx 0 points1 point ago

Don't you mean the first letter?

[–]partyontheleft 18 points19 points ago

The l is not upside down.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

l / — \ l / —\ there it is at all angles in case people were wondering.

[–]maynardftw 13 points14 points ago

.

There, got the one angle you forgot.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

ahhh yes. Don't forget the opposite of that

.

[–]maynardftw 1 point2 points ago

It's important to be thorough.

[–]Heliun -2 points-1 points ago

while we're at it, you forgot l / — \ l / —\

[–]lucianmatt 70 points71 points ago

Reposted from the most upvoted section. With the exact same title.

[–]reeve512 5 points6 points ago

You're going to have to reenter that. You entered an apostrophe, not an upside down comma.

[–]seoulstyle 2 points3 points ago

It will probably still work. Anytime there is a punctuation mark in one of the words, the Captcha ignores that word and analyzes only the other word.

[–]TheHIV123 0 points1 point ago

Additionally, if the "word" has a number in it, or it contains any character besides those in english, it ignores that word and you can enter anything you want.

[–]joe_duo 0 points1 point ago

One of the words will always be ignored because this is how it translate the text for books. You can always tell the difference because the word you have to type correctly has the same 'font' for each generated captcha.

[–]rauf107 2 points3 points ago

Ever hit the "listen" button in captcha? it's as fucked up as the written version, maybe even harder.

[–]blackkevinDUNK 0 points1 point ago

its scary as shit imo

[–]Oxygen8 10 points11 points ago

Anyone else press 'continue' more than once like I did?

[–]ChaseEatsWorlds 0 points1 point ago

I almost did. Caught myself in time though.

[–]t3hrabb1t 0 points1 point ago

pressed it then switched to right click and proceeded to trick self in to thinking i was just trying to save the pic...
hehe, silly me... little do i know

[–]melissaur1039 0 points1 point ago

Yep. I definitely got upset at myself when I realized what I did. x)

[–]springboobsquirepin 1 point2 points ago

did it work?!

[–]Sandbox47 1 point2 points ago

Isn't the last "C" capitalized?

[–]Canardlaquay 1 point2 points ago

It will work normally. The "readable" word is okay, the second one is just to contribute to the Google book reader: http://www.google.com/recaptcha/learnmore

[–]LastRedCoat 1 point2 points ago

Powerful in the ways of Inglip.

[–]Vortilex 0 points1 point ago

The Dark Lord demands Cobbler! Quick, fool, prepare his dessert!

[–]SlibIsSandwich 1 point2 points ago

Boston huh? I'm coming for you.

[–]greendot1001 1 point2 points ago

i don't know why but i clicked on the "continue" button...

[–]Animal_Mother27 1 point2 points ago

Anyone else read this in Adam West's voice?

[–]getfarkingreal 1 point2 points ago

FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: RE: RE: RE: HAHAHA

[–]TheCleanupBatter 1 point2 points ago

That's nothin look at this

Explain to me how I get that in the box.

This actually happened to me. Been saving it for something like this.

edit: punctuation

[–]PhatChimpanzee 1 point2 points ago

WE GET IT. SOMETIMES CAPTCHAS ARE UPSIDE DOWN.

[–]Room2426 9 points10 points ago

I'm assuming this is captcha in australia?

[–]Silvett 42 points43 points ago

Never heard that one before

[–]jakemyers7 1 point2 points ago

you mean read

[–]siddububba 6 points7 points ago

No, he's literally never heard that one before. He's read it though.

[–]TheYe 0 points1 point ago

i get similar all the time, i type exactly what they show and it's WRONG! Captchas don't really work much...

[–]jakemyers7 0 points1 point ago

hmmm should i click for another one ooooooooooor spend my time to make the words upside down

[–]motodeluxe 0 points1 point ago

Damn this motherfucker is serious!

[–]N3mezis 0 points1 point ago

How did you get that backwards p?

[–]The_Blueprint 0 points1 point ago

Comma, not an apostrophe.

[–]Jgarrett12 0 points1 point ago

Houston Craigslist FTW!

[–]Enneract 0 points1 point ago

But your texts aren't wavy.

[–]EmileHeskey22 0 points1 point ago

This picture is a big fuck you to originality.

[–]OpenTab 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one more interested in his Craigslist post than the recaptcha?

[–]TheJuBe 0 points1 point ago

The problem is that I feel like Captcha has gotten to the point where I can't even read some of the stuff.

[–]ohmahjah 0 points1 point ago

Back to the Repost: Part 2

[–]Cavemansol 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else try to click "continue" and then feel retarded?

[–]jmainceah 0 points1 point ago

You didnt make the "L" upside down too, but not bad

[–]gambLe6 0 points1 point ago

What sorcery is this!

[–]PneumonicFungus 0 points1 point ago

I don't think people realize that you can just write "amanks ,relbboC"

[–]Firelink 0 points1 point ago

[–]UnKamenRider 0 points1 point ago

Did I misspell it? If I did, I'm sorry. I can't see the text input on this phone. I use Swype because I'm lazy, so usually, it's random auto corrects, not typos, but it happens. It also never wants to load any of my previous comments or posts, so that's a thing.

[–]Aframe95 0 points1 point ago

FUNNY

[–]7LayerDip 0 points1 point ago

REEEEEEPPPPOOOSSSTTT

[–]Realstrongguy 0 points1 point ago

The first symbol wasn't an apostrophe, but an upside down comma. So there was some fixing to be made in that captcha.

[–]ericbm2 0 points1 point ago

Got this one once: http://i.imgur.com/39OUJ.jpg

[–]RollingSkittles 0 points1 point ago

Your move, repost...

[–]8BitMunky 0 points1 point ago

They took the logo a bit too seriously.

[–]hofme 0 points1 point ago

I think the "C" has to be in capitals.

[–]marishtar 0 points1 point ago

Usually there is one word that the captcha knows the answer to and one word that it does not. The word that it does not is scanned in by some book somewhere, using the Internet to digitize old articles and the such quickly. It is usually possible to tell which is which, and I like to purposely type in the wrong word whenever possible, often trying to use antonyms. Or, if it is a year, type a different year from the same time period (e.g. instead of 1855, type 1858). I hope that my actions lead to confusion or misinformation of those who read these articles or books online.

[–]A_Rolling_Baneling 2 points3 points ago

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Obama's plans to let Australia take over the U. S. of A. revealed by upside down captcha! Details at 11.

[–]YxesWfsn 2 points3 points ago

At first I was like ಠ_ಠ but then I read your username.

[–]N69sZelda -1 points0 points ago

well this made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside
