The video is infinitely better:

http://youtu.be/LIELaqwkmbQ

[–]stortz 1 point2 points ago

That's just amazing. Saved for future sightseeing

[–]covert_penguin 5 points6 points ago

Cool vid. Thanks.

[–]relevantusername- 0 points1 point ago

It's only flooded half the year, where'd that fish come from?

[–]millerswiller 5 points6 points ago

Probably the source that flooded it.

[–]relevantusername- 1 point2 points ago

Yeah that makes sense, thanks.

[–]kampfy3 0 points1 point ago

...how did you not immediately arrive at that conclusion

[–]relevantusername- 0 points1 point ago

I assumed it just rained heavily half the year and flooded up the meadow from scratch, never even considered a source until I read miller's comment.

[–]ThatCrankyGuy -1 points0 points ago

Um.. that is glacial melt water. Fish can't be there.

[–]DeltaIntegrale 97 points98 points ago

Austria is really one of the most beautiful countries I know, and I have been to a lot, including nearly all states of the US, all western and middle european countries and a great part of south east asia. I just love the different landscapes and vienna is beautiful and really cool for young people too.

[–]DeVilleBT 32 points33 points ago

you get an upvote for all the love for my country and hometown.

[–]I_FISTED_JESUS 8 points9 points ago

Mich überrascht es immer wieder wie viele Österreicher fliessend english können.

[–]Bootleg_Fireworks 6 points7 points ago

Mich überrascht es, dass jemand der Jesus gefistet hat noch lebt.

[–]Frankocean2 10 points11 points ago

I only got English and Jesus...

[–]onredditilearned 19 points20 points ago

So you're republican?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

From what I know, I believe he said "I'm surprised that you fisted jesus and lived."

And the above comment says something like "It's surprising how Austrians tend to speak English fluently."

[–]SCHROEDINGERS_UTERUS -1 points0 points ago

"the" Jesus?

[–]Squallid 0 points1 point ago

"der" in this case isn't "the" but "who", like in "someone who likes xxx" is "jemand der xxx mag".

I can't really explain grammar, but "der" is directed at the described person prior to "der", which is "jemand" (someone)....german is a difficult language for a reason ;)

[–]SCHROEDINGERS_UTERUS 0 points1 point ago

Ohhh. I knew that... I have seen people write "der Jesus" in a context where it was definitely a definite article. German is a really freaking weird language...

[–]chikinboy 2 points3 points ago

Hey are you sure this isn't int the Tampa Bay area right now??

[–]Ithinkthatsagiraffe -1 points0 points ago

A reddit or who actually does stuff...

[–]PokeyHydra 88 points89 points ago

That's cool as hell. Are there special plants that are adapted to living in two enviroments like that?

[–]Vimsefreet 35 points36 points ago

Came to ask just this. I imagine the grass must've adapted somehow to survive the floods. Grass would adapt very easily I guess. But the trees don't drown and the park benches don't rot?

[–]leros 23 points24 points ago

I know people put non-aquatic plants in aquariums all the time (Petsmart is notorious for selling non-aquatic plants in the fish department). They usually live for at least a few months before dying.

[–]Vimsefreet 11 points12 points ago

Cool. I've always just assumed plants just drowned quite quickly.

[–]guynamedjames 7 points8 points ago

That's interesting. If they can live for a few months I imagine that after only a few decades Darwinism would kick in pretty well on the local level and cause the grass in the area to live through that. I'm certainly not qualified to answer this, but I would think plants have a pretty good rate of mutation compared to animals.

[–]life-form_42 1 point2 points ago

A form of Darwinism may end up working, but I imagine it would be something like the grass that can't handle underwater would die out and some other grass might move in.

Not sure what you're intention was, but if you think that grass is gonna evolve in a few decades, your time scale is off. A noticeable shift in a plant from non aquatic to partially aquatic would most likely take an enormous amount of time. Probably in the thousands of years or more range.

[–]guynamedjames 9 points10 points ago

Dude, you just described darwinism. Sure if there was a plant species already adapted to semi-aquatic enviroment's it would be the only one there, but if even a single plant of regular grass survived, it would completely take over that area in no time thanks to its mutation. If the mutation becomes significant enough to the plants genes you end up with a new species.

[–]timfromsweden 23 points24 points ago

I think they were talking about two different aspects of Darwinism. One comment was about natural selection and the other was about adaptive radiation.

[–]matt0_0 7 points8 points ago

This guy

[–]TheEllimist 4 points5 points ago

I think that everyone in this comment thread is being completely speculative and actually has no idea what the actual ecology of this location is.

[–]timfromsweden 2 points3 points ago

I agree. I was just explaining that they were talking about different things.

[–]willbradley 1 point2 points ago

gosh I wonder how long this valley has been getting flooded ;)

[–]SkyNTP 6 points7 points ago

the park benches don't rot?

Rot requires both moisture and oxygen. Wood will not rot without the presence of either.

Water does contain oxygen however so it will rot, just probably not as quickly as wood subjected to tides or piers at sea-level. I would chance a guess that your average park bench is subjected to an equal opportunity to rot under heavy rain conditions than being completely submerged.

[–]Eilinen 0 points1 point ago

The Ship Vasa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_(ship)) was underneath water hundreds of years without rotting.

[–]banana_almighty 1 point2 points ago

Also a lot of ancient bridges are sitting on underwater support beams

[–]chwilliam 0 points1 point ago

Somebody was on reddit yesterday!

[–]Eilinen 0 points1 point ago

Ah.. no actually. I visited the ship in it's museum years ago. When rotting wood was mentioned, I immediately remembered the Vasa.

The Baltic Ocean is full of ships like that, difference being that the Vasa had more historical value and was in an easily reachable location.

[–]Vimsefreet 0 points1 point ago

Wood will deteriorate over time I suppose.

[–]magictoenail -1 points0 points ago

Probably those recycled plastic benches

EDIT: Well the one in the picture is pretty clearly wood lol

[–]drunky_crowette 3 points4 points ago

Actually there are a bunch of plants that can be grown above water only to live under water. In fact, its a pretty popular way to start a planted fish tank, since the plants grow much quicker above water.

Here is a forum post with progress pics of a really pretty tank, with its moss and carpeting plants growing emersed.

[–]Hons19Hons 1 point2 points ago

its just a short time in the year when there is very much rain the river increases very fast and then this great bench is under water (:

[–]omegacrunch 21 points22 points ago

I want to sit on that bench with scuba gear, wearing a trench coat, and having an umbrella next to me.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Went there with my high school girlfriend and her mom. Drove 2 hours to get there, anticipation building to a peak. Walked over the ridge to see....a mud puddle about the size of a children's wading pool. That day the Austrians learned about off season for the green lake. Still tease them about that.

[–]omegacrunch 0 points1 point ago

How far off season were you?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Went during spring break, March-ish.

[–]420questions 7 points8 points ago

I studied in the Tirol... <3 Austria and all of its wonderful people.

[–]OutoflurkintoLight 4 points5 points ago

Hm this is only a 90 minute drive from where I live... must check that out!

[–]ThatAustrian 2 points3 points ago

Where you from? It's also 90 minutes for me!

[–]OutoflurkintoLight 2 points3 points ago

Vienna :)

[–]jane-3 2 points3 points ago

how come i see so many people from vienna here and there hasn't been a meetup :(

[–]ThatAustrian 0 points1 point ago

Graz hier :)

[–]coliliqui 0 points1 point ago

It's 18 hours for me... I'd still do it.

[–]carbonnanotube 0 points1 point ago

Make sure you have a dry-suit, I would bet that water is about 1C considering the shallow depth.

[–]visavismeyou 5 points6 points ago

Most of the comments down there state that this pic gets oft posted - can we get one of this lake in its park state?

[–]red321red321 2 points3 points ago

i hate sitting on a wet bench

[–]OneCello 28 points29 points ago

This gets posted very frequently but I dont really mind cause its so fucking cool.

[–]OP_karma_whores -5 points-4 points ago

[–]rounding_error 2 points3 points ago

There's a park in Germantown, Ohio built around a flood control dam. Most of the time its dry, but when you get down near the river, you occasionally spot pieces of driftwood stuck 20 or 30 feet up in the trees.

Edit: video Note that the water is in the treetops when it zooms out.

[–]blackbright 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of Ponyo.

Do fish come down from the mountain with the melt water? Where do they go in July?

[–]tonterias 11 points12 points ago

Fish heaven. Or hell.

[–]willbradley 4 points5 points ago

How would fish get up to a mountain covered in frozen ice?

[–]cumfarts 1 point2 points ago

they swim

[–]willbradley 3 points4 points ago

...up a frozen mountain...

[–]NinjaCameraman 1 point2 points ago

The description another user gives in another comment says that the lake exists in July, just merely 1 meter deep. This probably explains the one fish visible in millerswiller's video

[–]willbradley 0 points1 point ago

Now I want to know how fish would get to a remote lake. They don't float through the air like seeds. Does a hypothetical untouched inland lake, formed in the absence of a connection to rivers, ever get fish? Were all naturally stocked lakes once connected to the ocean?

[–]Eilinen 0 points1 point ago

Not a biologist, but lakes need to be filled from somewhere; otherwise the water will evaporate. So a lake would come from spring, or from mountains; and as the intake isn't equal to to the evaporating rate, the water will spill into rivers, which lead to ocean (if the river doesn't in turn doesn't evaporate or isn't used as farming water etc). Thus the fish get in.

Also stuff like ice age, continental moves etc. There are very few places with water that aren't or haven't been connected to anywhere else. And even then, humans might bring fish to the lake to add to their diet.

This is the Green Lake in Tragoess, Styria, which sits at the foot of snow-capped Hochschwab mountains.

Throughout the frozen winter months the area is almost completely dry and is used as a county park. It is a particular favourite site for hikers. But as soon as the temperatures begin to rise in spring, the ice and snow on the mountaintops begins to melt and runs down into the basin of land below. The park fills up with ice-cold crystal clear water, which gets its distinctive green colouring from the grass and foliage beneath.

The water levels rise from about one or two metres deep in the winter to as much as 10 metres in the late spring and early summer. The waters are at their highest in June when it becomes a mecca for divers keen to explore the rare phenomenon, before the waters recede at the end of July.

[–]Major_Error 23 points24 points ago

funny, I live like 30 miles away from that lake and have never heard of it before. Next hiking/diving trip is now already planned, thanks for the info!

[–]Intrepid00 22 points23 points ago

You are allowed to dive there all year. Just half the year isn't much fun.

[–]EmceeKyn 3 points4 points ago

Fuck it man, I'm goin' in...

[–]lebowskisweater 9 points10 points ago

Because the rest of the year you'd just be crawling on the ground.

[–]casshern09 2 points3 points ago

Would have been a much better picture if the diver had sat on the bench with his legs crossed, like a sir.

[–]Gurigold 1 point2 points ago

I just woke up. And i cant help but just stare at this picture lol

[–]boobers3 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a poisonous Australian man-eating bench.

[–]davebees 1 point2 points ago

might wanna re-read that title

[–]boobers3 2 points3 points ago

D'oh you got me, guess I should finish waking up before I comment.

[–]SilverJohnny 1 point2 points ago

more like, x/post from r/repost

[–]zen1mada 0 points1 point ago

It's funny that this will become quite common over the next couple hundred (or thousand) years in low coastal zones. Yay global warming! :D

[–]DrakeAwoken 0 points1 point ago

Ahh here's the bench, break time!

[–]thebart 0 points1 point ago

Why is the water not totally muddy?

[–]jgagnon 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a snorkeling destination from here.

[–]CatLover99 0 points1 point ago

How does the water not become murky?

[–]sekai-31 0 points1 point ago

And this is a repost

[–]pschoenthaler 0 points1 point ago

As an austrian, i can confirm that this is a lake

[–]shaav 0 points1 point ago

i decided that i absolutely have to take a swim in this lake this summer, although i know i will die because of the water being cold as ice. i just have to, it just looks way too refreshing and nice and clear and magic.

[–]Axeral 0 points1 point ago

I want to go to there!

[–]hannahpsmith 0 points1 point ago

Adding this to my bucket list.

[–]Phlexonance 0 points1 point ago

Where exactly is that?

[–]futuredoctor2016 0 points1 point ago

I went on an academic trip to Europe when I was 16. I went to five countries and Austria was by far my favorite. It really is a beautiful place.

[–]shenanlganz -2 points-1 points ago

Oh is it time already for this to be reposted? cool.

[–]phil8248 0 points1 point ago

Kind of raises an interesting question, and this has probably been stated before so I guess I'm re-posting, but if something is new to you is it still a re-post?
