Sounds like something my grandfather would tell me.

Nope, it isn't. Gravity is a function of mass, while ferromagnetism, the magnetism in permanent magnets, exists due to the order of the dipoles mostly in the same direction.

[–]mongster2 -3 points-2 points ago

Nope! The effects of electro-magnetism (one of the four fundamental forces) can actually be fully described by general relativity (the theory which describes gravitational phenomena). So it's actually not inaccurate to say that magnets work because they contain 'pieces of gravity'.

[–]a-t-k 2 points3 points ago

Alas, "pieces of gravity" is as inaccurate a description as it could get, so I am sorry to disagree on your idea of accuracy.

[–]dogbreath101 0 points1 point ago

i contain "pieces of gravity" so is that how life works to?

[–]Kharnalos 0 points1 point ago

I would like to politely interject that you sir are fucking retarded

[–]mongster2 1 point2 points ago

Well that wasn't very polite. If you disagree with my scientific perspective, perhaps you should offer yours

[–]itfeelsfeynman 0 points1 point ago

Rudeness is always unnecessary but I will give you my opinion, if you don't mind.

Just because GR describes both EM effects and G, it doesn't mean they're intrinsically entwined. Both EM and G represent two out of four very distinct elementary forces.

"Pieces of gravity" assumes immediately a quantization of the gravitational force (which nonexistence up to this point I'm assuming you're familiar with), which is very inaccurate and misleading.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the ferromagnetism (and the EM interaction of particles) that causes magnetism in magnets, while (as a-t-k put it) gravity is a function of mass and the warping of timespace.

[–]Kharnalos 0 points1 point ago

It was polite I "politely interjected"

Oh and since magnetism is a stronger force than gravity it can't be cause by gravity. Herp de fuckin derp.

[–]mongster2 0 points1 point ago

Hm.. the strong force is much stronger than the weak force at small distances, yet they are mediated by the same fundamental particles. I'm not convinced...

[–]Kharnalos 0 points1 point ago

Thats probably because you are stupid. Consider suicide

[–]mongster2 0 points1 point ago

Why don't you like me? I like you.

[–]duhduhduhdiabeetus 0 points1 point ago

Unless i'm ill informed, isn't that unification not established, at least experimentally, yet?

[–]aneldritcherror[S] 0 points1 point ago

XD "Young whipper snapper, let me tell you about a real MIRACLE!"

[–]webpageblocked79 0 points1 point ago

a-t-k got that off wikipedia

[–]JavaMuzik 0 points1 point ago

This is the stupidest fucking thing I have ever read. Please don't reproduce. Unless you're joking, which would indicate you have an adequate sense of humor.

[–]LeTricolore 0 points1 point ago

Fuckin' magnets... how do they work?

[–]jrwperformance 0 points1 point ago

yes.
