It's generally considered, when talking about the current economic crisis, to be talking about modern Greece, the country created after the 1821 independance war. I don't think there is anyone comparing the current crisis to the plague of Athens in 430bc.

still ...Greece has defaulted 5 times since ...plus war of independence, lost war to the turks, first balkan, second balkan war, first world war, asia minor dissaster, depression, second world war, civil war and a dictatorship ...

I would argue that people could draw parallels to the economic crisis regarding debt upon your person leading up to the reforms of Solon in 594 BCE.

The previous constitution written by Draco had allowed people to use as collateral you becoming the slave of the creditor, with your oath being paramount, hence the term Draconian.

The conundrum of debtor farmers going broke and the means of production being consolidated on too few a number of hands who farmed it with slave labor from insolvent debtor farmers was as well abolished through limiting the amount of land you could own by how much you could work with a modest crew, effectively mandating against too big to fail organizations from existing as well as the greater income disparity

It says "one of"... clearly it means one of like 500 :)

Indeed, 500 crisis since 1821, when modern Greece was created, a country which has hardly anything to do with ancient Greece.

Hmm? The modern greek language is obviously directly descended from ancient greek (with a mix of italian, turkish and others for good measure), and most of the area that's regarded as "ancient Greece" is covered by the current borders (pelloponese, athens, macedonia (vergina), the cyclades and crete). I'd say thats a pretty strong contender for at least some kind of connection.

besides culture, music, theater, dance, literature, philosophy, education being centered around ancient greece etc

The real main difference that seperates modern to ancient greeks is the religion, thats why ancient greeks are so romanticized even in greece, they followed crazy thunder gods and had secret cave temples to hades and orgys at aphrodites temples

I honestly wish we kept that religion, it would of made for a very interesting modern greece.

I think it's a bit silly to group all previous Greeces in modern Greece. Unless the defeat of Julius Civilis counts as a Dutch military defeat. Which it don't.

Can't we still pretend?

Before 1821 there was no such thing as the Greece we know today. Sure, GREEKS existed, but Greece as a state is relatively new as they lived (mainly) in the Ottoman and Byzantine/Roman empires. Before that is a different story entirely, but that Greece hardly has much to do with the current one.

I think sometimes nitpickers forget how the term "crisis" is generally used. Nobody would refer to a war or an invasion as a mere "crisis."

I like how they all have such a casual facial expressions. Stabbing, butchering, killing ... oh well, just another day at the job.

I stand corrected.

[–]Canadasmacksaw 10 points11 points ago

None of that compares to the Kraken.

[–]Jaang 0 points1 point ago

You should just let that go.

[–]Walesmykeana 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention the Spartan invasion of Athens.
