I was just there last week! Though when I visited the place, it was raining the entire time. Still beautiful in a down pour (though harder to get a picture). The whole Ring of Kerry is something magical. edit Here is a picture I took in the Ring

[–]CSethAndrews 8 points9 points ago

You should see the Dingle Peninsula, it is beautiful. I will upload a pic and post. I have spent 3 weeks in Killarney this year so far.

[–]mikeschuld 1 point2 points ago

Dingle was one of my favorite places. The whole peninsula is small enough to drive in a few hours and you can still stop and have a great lunch and some craft beer at Tig Bric :D

Also, here are some pictures. https://plus.google.com/photos/106532710478137263200/albums/5664108335016779169?authkey=CNfCj-qjsfCKYw

[–]lijkel 0 points1 point ago

Best place I have ever been on holiday to, without a doubt.

[–]tomtermite 10 points11 points ago

It's always raining there. These pictures are shopped by Failte Ireland.

[–]kutterk 4 points5 points ago

My two favourite days of the year here in Ireland are my birthday and summer.

[–]jeffxmorrison 1 point2 points ago

I went there last summer! Truly mind blowing.

[–]zaliman 1 point2 points ago

ME TOO!

[–]Ross29 1 point2 points ago

I was there a few years ago. Ross Castle was pretty special to me since I'm a Ross, a beautiful place for sure.

[–]wales_is_desolate 0 points1 point ago

I was there on a University trip a couple of months ago. We had a week of sun and heat, great boat rides and hiking around the highlands. Possibly my favourite trip ever. Great pubs in Kenmare as well.

[–]wasappenin -1 points0 points ago

Sounds like portland OR. i'd die in 2 years from depression.

[–]the_silent_redditor 11 points12 points ago

Donegal ain't half bad, either.

[–]PavementBlues 0 points1 point ago

Definitely, though Clare is and always will be best county.

[–]ToBeSureToBeSure 2 points3 points ago

Up the Banner!

[–]PavementBlues 1 point2 points ago

Fuck yeah!

To be honest, I was raised in the States, but my dad is a Clareman who immigrated here a few years before I was born. He used to have a little sign that he hung on our door that said, "SUPPORT CLARE: EAT HURLING. DRINK HURLING. SLEEP HURLING. HATE EVERYONE."

[–]Thephantomtollboy 10 points11 points ago

Just seems like the type of place I wouldn't want to bring any electronics. I would just enjoy where I was as long as I was there.

[–]theomossop 3 points4 points ago

Oh no, you'd want electronics, you can enjoy yourself when it isn't raining

[–]unknownkoger 9 points10 points ago

Ross Castle. I've been to Killarney twice and am always astounded by the beauty...it's one of my favorite places

[–]sergiog92 4 points5 points ago

I went there with my friends on a backpacking trip through Europe, we ended up staying a couple weeks there because we were so astounded with it's beauty

[–]headzoo 9 points10 points ago

I love pictures like this, because they remind me the world hasn't been completely plastered in cement, and it still has some natural beauty.

[–]wales_is_desolate 2 points3 points ago

I've been on some of the small lake islands doing some University work in Killarney. It's a great feeling stepping onto land that has possibly not been traversed by another person.

[–]Hugedo 6 points7 points ago

Killarney is beautiful indeed. If any Redditors are in Kerry, Ireland, Be sure to go to Killarney. I would encourage you, even more, to go to Ballinskelligs, Kerry. And go see the ring of kerry. He's a pic of Ballinskelligs - http://www.globeimages.net/img-ballinskelligs-bay-county-kerry-ireland-245.htm

[–]Psysok 0 points1 point ago

I biked the Ring of Kerry 3 weeks ago. It was great. Extremely beautiful. I wish I had given myself more time to spend in the places we stopped.

[–]Hugedo 1 point2 points ago

Gives you an excuse to go back so!

[–]xecosine 2 points3 points ago

Unless your name is Arney.

[–]IrishSchmirish 2 points3 points ago

Motherfucking Arney! He shows his face around here and... Well, you know how that will end up..

[–]dolichoblond 4 points5 points ago

Love this. Hidden gem of a place to stay/visit. There's a hostel just outside of town that rents bikes. I'd recommend grabbing one, heading down to the castle, then getting on the boat tour across the lake, and then biking through the valley back to town. Fantastic little day trip that anyone can do! Pics for proof but are pretty dated now, been a while, sadly

[–]goldblum_was_here 1 point2 points ago

I did that as well, fantastic decision. even if you're in town for only a day a bike is the best way to see it. The hills above the lake were glorious, haven't seen a view like that in a long time.

[–]cbauer357 3 points4 points ago

The Dingle Peninsula is lovely as well

[–]goldblum_was_here 0 points1 point ago

spent a few days there last september. Don't think i used my cell phone or ipod once. Love me some cliffs!

[–]cbauer357 1 point2 points ago

Did you get there via Conner's Past? Basically a goat trail with little lambs everywhere that jump into the middle of the road, sharp rocks on either side with one side being a big long drop off of a cliff, tour buses running you off the road? We wound up with two flat tires and praising God when we got off that road. Once we got there it was great, but getting there was horrifying.

[–]LeutDan 9 points10 points ago

Another beautiful place in the world, Killarney Provincial Park, Ontario Canada

[–]daveMTU 2 points3 points ago

came here to post this pic... I love Killarney, Ontario!

http://www.data-iq.com/media/6693/37%20killarney%20-%20canada.jpg

[–]pasmeme 0 points1 point ago

I grew up on a street named Killarney in Ontario.

[–]D3adkl0wn 4 points5 points ago

As much as I love living in Newfoundland, I hate that we don't have these kind of forts and castles kicking about..

[–]burgess_meredith_jr 0 points1 point ago

Well, there is Cabot Tower...

[–]D3adkl0wn 0 points1 point ago

thats up on a rocky foggy windy hill though, not in a pleasant looking place like this.

[–]burgess_meredith_jr 0 points1 point ago

Yea, but you have Gros Morne. That's plenty pleasant to look at...

[–]JFSOCC 3 points4 points ago

pretty

why don´t you check out /r/earthporn

[–]KoolgirlKristen 3 points4 points ago

My family and I stayed in Killarney last year not to far from a small pub I think it was called the the golden spike. I can say this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The only bummer to the trip was that I didn't come home with a Colin Ferrel-esque Irish man. There's always next year.

[–]mrturdferguson 5 points6 points ago

Went to Ireland for 2 weeks. Killarney was the most beautiful by far. Stayed at the Lake Shore Hotel... I think that's the name.

[–]bujweiser 3 points4 points ago

That's awesome. Ireland in general is one of the most beautiful places in the world IMO.

[–]wtf_kitties 4 points5 points ago

This post actually makes me sad because this is my life destination... I've wanted to go to Ireland since I was little. I've promised myself that after I graduate college and become stable I'll go there. Someday...

[–]rodon 2 points3 points ago

I took one of the jaunting cars through Killarney National Park last fall. We made it to Ross castle as well as Muckross House. It was so damn peaceful.

[–]wyoming_1 2 points3 points ago

Was standing on that very spot just four days and am now in humid Illinois. Life is a little cruel sometimes. But yeah, Killarney is also one of my fave spots in Ireland.

[–]BirdD0g 2 points3 points ago

I was in Killarney, near Muckross House, and we hiked up to see some sort of falls nearby. We just kept hiking, following the source up into the mountains and ended up on the top of the tallest one we could find. Awesome place.

[–]cairneyouhearme 2 points3 points ago

I love this place. Went for my senior trip. It is just as beautiful on an overcast day. Though what the picture doesn't show are the billion deer and the awesome little islands of trees.

[–]aeroalex 2 points3 points ago

Beautiful! My family came from there and I want to come visit sometime.

[–]maryjwana 2 points3 points ago

Ross Castle? I was there last year. Absolutely breathtaking.

[–]Kennyhurtmerchant 2 points3 points ago

Fock off Donegal is where its at

Come for the scenery

Stay because youre dead

[–]skyclown 1 point2 points ago

Tir Chonaill Abu!

[–]wasthehopedrunk 2 points3 points ago

This was my family's favourite place to go for short breaks. It's proper amazing, I highly recommend horse riding by Mucross Lake and the Torc Waterfall!

[–]rlynch1996 2 points3 points ago

I was lucky enough to visit Ireland during a drought and had no rain when I was there. I visited here and it was incredible.

[–]tomonline 4 points5 points ago

I'm pretty sure that castle in the pick has traditional feasts for tourists, I went back in 2004 and got drunk on mead.

[–]iMeaux 2 points3 points ago

Mmmm...mead.

[–]mikeschuld 1 point2 points ago

That is Ross Castle. I think you are thinking of Bunratty castle. That was a hell of a good time.

[–]BrainSpecialist 1 point2 points ago

Over in Killarney, many years ago...

[–]sfenerin 1 point2 points ago

I went here a few years ago. I was lost in the trails for a few hours before I stumbled on this place

[–]CHEESY_ABORTION_FIST 1 point2 points ago

Agreed, I just wish I could have spent more than a day there.

[–]Sepheriel 1 point2 points ago

You don't know how bad I want to be there right now...

[–]Bojenkins 1 point2 points ago

great bars there

[–]seawied 1 point2 points ago

[–]theBPPE 1 point2 points ago

Most say he rose again...

[–]cul_maith 1 point2 points ago

I went horseback riding around the lakes (amazing!) when I was there, and we went into town to get lunch.

I nearly had a heart attack when we got into town and I turned the corner and saw six Irish soldiers complete with automatic weapons.

I didn't know the Irish army had nothing better to do than escort armored cars to/from the bank.

[–]CubicleView 2 points3 points ago

Wouldn't really agree with you there, it seems a sensible enough use of their time to me. There have been a number of raids on armored cars over the years, I'd say a six man army escort would have been enough to prevent any such crimes. I'd imagine as well that if we didn't use the army we'd probably end up arming more Gardai, which wouldn't be a good thing imo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Army#Roles_of_the_Army

[–]cul_maith 1 point2 points ago

Didn't mean to sound like I thought they were worthless.

I didn't know they were involved with international humanitarian efforts. Maith iad. Thanks for the link.

[–]CubicleView 0 points1 point ago

Have to admit I do find it unsettling myself when I see armed guards etc in Ireland, just not used to seeing it and it looks out of place.

[–]cul_maith 0 points1 point ago

I just thought it was so odd in a place like Killarney

[–]Italian_Barrel_Roll 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one here who wants to drop trou and dip their balls in that water?

[–]IrishSchmirish 1 point2 points ago

No sir. You are not the only one. Internet Ball-five! no? Carry on...

[–]wanderso24 1 point2 points ago

Born and raised in New York but this is where my family is from. In my opinion the best place on Earth.

[–]chemtype 1 point2 points ago

Hyrule.

[–]malfunktionv2 1 point2 points ago

My family name is O'Killian (O'Cilleaon). I'm curious if Killarny (Cill Airne) is where the family is from. It looks like a beautiful place to call home.

[–]LadyWhiteadder 3 points4 points ago

The word 'Kill' or 'Cill' in Irish, comes from an old word for church (I think), so you'll see it in a lot of place names. I wonder if we have a place to match your surname...?

[–]Darkhorse81 2 points3 points ago

Killarney or Cill Áirne in Gaelic, means Church of the Sloes, there's an old monastery. Irish surnames don't usually correspond with place names. Irish surnames were anglicised when the Irish emmigrated, most were distorted by folks who couldnt understand the accent/language and some were changed intentionally by the Irsh themselves to sound less Irish, due to the growing racism against the immigrants

[–]LadyWhiteadder 1 point2 points ago

Church of the Sloes, that's a gorgeous name! I was there last year, I wish I'd known that at the time.

[–]malfunktionv2 0 points1 point ago

The problem I've had is that the spelling is never the same due to translation issues. It can be Killian, Killion, Kilan, Killeen, Cilleaon, or any of those with an O' before them.

[–]LadyWhiteadder 0 points1 point ago

Understood. The one I hear most over here is Killian, but as a first name. I don't remember hearing your surname before, even in school, and we all used our Irish names. But, then again, we were all girls, or nuns, so we didn't have an O' before our name.

[–]pasmeme 1 point2 points ago

My childhood took place on a wicked street in a decent chunk of suburbia. It was a court and almost every house had a couple kids raging in age. I spent my first 16 years there. My friend went to Ireland and bought me a beautiful painting of "home".

[–]Conkernog 1 point2 points ago

I quite enjoyed that

[–]brussels4breakfast 1 point2 points ago

This is where I want to be when I take my last breath.

[–]theGizm0 1 point2 points ago

Ross Castle was amazing. I was in Killarney for my Honeymoon back in August. Dunguaire Castle was a close second for me. Its in Kinvarra. Its hard to love just one photo though. So so many amazing sites.

[–]tired08 1 point2 points ago

Spent 10 days in Ireland a few years back. Beautiful country, great people and tons of fun! Would love to go back!

[–]Psysok 1 point2 points ago

I went to Killarney a decade ago when I was backpacking around Europe. My girlfriend (now wife) and I biked around Killarney and it was so beautiful that we decided to add biking the whole Ring of Kerry to our bucket list. 3 weeks ago we went back and toured the whole country and then spent 4 days biking the whole ring with 3 other friends.

[–]satchifunkalus 4 points5 points ago

on the 2 days of the year when it actually looks like this and isnt a damp, rainy, muddy mirky mess

EDIT: sorry to sound pessimistic, but im in Ireland and the weather is just so depressing

[–]PADRAlC 2 points3 points ago

As an Irishman I can confirm this.

[–]satchifunkalus 7 points8 points ago

i remember summer when i was a kid... it was on a thursday

[–]LadyWhiteadder 0 points1 point ago

I never could get the hang of Thursdays...

[–]ferdinandceline 1 point2 points ago

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

[–]applespicedonuts 0 points1 point ago

Did you take the boat tour?

[–]mruss_rr 0 points1 point ago

Guys, can anybody tell me the secret of the grass? When I see short vivid mowed green grass like that on Ireland pictures I feel jealous. How is that it is so.... even?

[–]bobstay 3 points4 points ago

Rain. And sheep.

[–]OgodHOWdisGEThere 0 points1 point ago

sheep. if you have a decent sized garden, don't buy a ride on, buy a sheep.

[–]BopNiblets 2 points3 points ago

What about a ride on sheep?

[–]OgodHOWdisGEThere -1 points0 points ago

there is a gif of this somewhere, I know it.

[–]BopNiblets 1 point2 points ago

Dang, I disconnected my PC with animation shop on it, can't gif this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQJnYOq9e_s

What's good for making gifs on Linux (laptop)?

[–]bobstay 0 points1 point ago

I think there are websites for it these days.

[–]cleefa 0 points1 point ago

Mostly because of this.

[–]beepee123 0 points1 point ago

calm3.jpg

[–]MAJORpaiynne 0 points1 point ago

this is the first time I have seen a place that I have been. It's like going back into the anibus

[–]bobstay 0 points1 point ago

Yes, depart a lot at this time, and cut the approaching any more or we fire arrows into the tops of your heads and make castanets of your testicles already.

Remain gone, illegitimate-faced bugger-folk! And, if you think you got a nasty taunting this time, you ain't heard nothing yet, dappy English k...niggets.

[–]neogetz 0 points1 point ago

Went on holiday there, not a drop of rain, just beautiful views.

[–]koeker 0 points1 point ago

I think the bad-ass-knight version of the Windows wallpaper could be shot here.

[–]eNjOi_ -1 points0 points ago

Those god damn handrails

[–]Beroan03 0 points1 point ago

I wish I could make my base in minecraft this pretty...

[–]skydivingdutch 0 points1 point ago

Looks like that picture was taken on the one day in the year it doesn't rain there.

[–]redshirt07 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Monthy Python

[–]Philile 0 points1 point ago

I don't think Arney would like that island.

[–]cachazo 0 points1 point ago

Over in Killarney... Many years ago...

[–]everyoneisme 0 points1 point ago

I used to live there. So beautiful. Wonderful people when you get off the beaten path too.

[–]CSethAndrews 0 points1 point ago

http://i.imgur.com/Lr7fl.jpg - Just another view of this same shot. This was in February. I am guessing you went to play golf? This city is the place to do it.

Here is a shot from our trip around the Dingle Peninsula: http://i.imgur.com/DbX2P.jpg Definitely worth the trip out...

[–]PeachestheBowl 0 points1 point ago

Midges. Midges everywhere.

[–]IAMAPocketfish 0 points1 point ago

I was born in that lake.

[–]stackus 0 points1 point ago

I visited there as a teenager with my father. One day we were walking down a road that had an old stone fence down one side. One end of the wall was straight up and looked great but as you continued down the road the wall began to bulge and look less than perfect.

My father pointed out the changes and told me, "Here we can see a physical timeline of an Irish workmans day. We're at about noon I'd say."

Later we visited a pub and he bought me my first Guinness. As an American teenager ready to embrace his Irish heritage, and maybe build a wall, it was an awesome experience.

This was in the early ninties and I cannot remember the road name. I want to say it was a road that headed into the direction of Muckross House but I may be mistaken.

[–]foulmouthedoldman 0 points1 point ago

Brown up the grass and you're at that old fort on the other side of the lake from Riften.

[–]Derm 0 points1 point ago

None of the green stuff here in the pale.

[–]skyclown 0 points1 point ago

I'm inside the pale and surrounded by green!

[–]indian_inside 0 points1 point ago

Hey, this place seems familiar. Ah, now I get it...Aishwarya Rai!

[–]THNDHALBRT 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Castle Stalker from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

[–]Le_Rager 0 points1 point ago

Excuse me, this is obviously where the Hobbits live, not Ireland!

[–]Roastings 0 points1 point ago

Holy crap I was just at that castle a week ago. I was with a tour group from georgia and me and our tour guide , Daniel, got up and ran by that castle. Awesome!

[–]theTezuma 0 points1 point ago

while its not raining.

[–]barnacle999 0 points1 point ago

And all of the folks at home.

[–]thepainteddoor 0 points1 point ago

Makes Killarney, Ontario look like a piece of shit!

[–]TouteDeLaSmore 1 point2 points ago

I dunno. I still prefer Killarney, Ontario. The Canadian Shield is my weakness.

[–]iamnowhereman 0 points1 point ago

I'M A HUMBLE SHEEP SHEARER FROM KILLARNEY.

[–]patropolis55 0 points1 point ago

Killarney? Clearly you have never been to Donegal. :)

[–]theomossop 7 points8 points ago

Donegal? Clearly you've never been to Donegal

[–]patropolis55 0 points1 point ago

Ah, Donegal Town sucks, all it has is that paltry castle. Sliabh Liag, anyone?

[–]jostler57 0 points1 point ago

City named after the event where Arney, the rapist, was killed for his crimes.

[–]Conkernog 0 points1 point ago

False

[–]jostler57 1 point2 points ago

False etymology: Eng. c. 1530 - When a man falls he wishes it were untrue, thereby yelling, "Falls!" Over time it became simply, false.

[–]adsweeny 0 points1 point ago

I think there was a good cop show shot there, Single Handed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0991266/) Some of the background scenery was just amazing.

[–]thenewjerk -1 points0 points ago

If it weren't for the castle, I'd swear this was Vermont.

[–]kriegers_van -1 points0 points ago

Home of Chief Miles O'Brien! (Wow, I am such a nerd.)

[–]Early_Kyler -1 points0 points ago

Meh.

[–]skekze -2 points-1 points ago

If such places are ruined by man, I will rise from my grave to eat your brains.

[–]TheLemonTree 0 points1 point ago

WTF are you talking about

[–]zirazira -1 points0 points ago

It looks great but try to find a job there.

[–]Phyzzx -1 points0 points ago

Poor Arney.

[–]Raherin -1 points0 points ago

Hmm, something seems out of place for this to be Ireland.... I see not a single potato, or even the type that is fermented and bottled.

[–]Papa_Steve -1 points0 points ago

Are you selling me no blarney?

[–]alepov -1 points0 points ago

Don't wanna be a buzzkill, but even though it is indeed beautiful, it's certainly not "one of the most beautiful".

[–]jst3w -1 points0 points ago

I can tell it's photoshopped because it's Ireland and only part of the sky is grey.

[–]seafoamstratocaster -1 points0 points ago

Meh. That's debatable.

[–]toxoplasmosis_cat -1 points0 points ago

I was there few years ago, put my hand on the grass for few seconds, and few ticks start crawling my hand... NOPE, I will never visit Ireland EVER AGAIN.

[–]Deergoose -2 points-1 points ago

I was in Ireland for St. Patties Day. Almost went there to do some day drinking.

[–]BandyLegsCrane -3 points-2 points ago

Meh.

[–]mdisnth -3 points-2 points ago

It's cool and all but it is ALWAYS raining there. And by always I mean ALL THE TIME. Almost impossible to take cool photo like that.

[–]sociocidal -3 points-2 points ago

I lived there for 10 years. The place is a hole. Nothing but a tourist trap with a massive drug and violence problem that the Garda wont touch because the increased crime rate would damage tourism.
