Butters, for all of his failures, is one of my favorite characters. The show is really insightful when you look through all of the silly stuff.

It's because his innocence is being robbed from him and he's turning into a twisted character. Look at all the episodes he's been in, from being an attempted murder victim for seeing his dad in a gay bath house to a flying shoe killing an entire theater.

I almost draw an analogy to The Dark Knight, since I saw that movie again recently. He's supposed to be the shining beacon of light in a fucked up world, but slowly it takes over and destroys him. That said, I find Professor Chaos a ridiculously hilarious character.

I love feel good moments on shows. Also, I keep track of all my sadness. This way I know I'm owed a ton of happiness in the future. Because it works like that ʘ‿ʘ

Thanks for posting this, really makes me feel like things will get better.

Damnit Butters...

Perhaps it'll work like that for me someday.

[–]lunajay 6 points7 points ago

wish this would work for me... I still feel numb...

[–]no_i_ram 5 points6 points ago

numb is the worst. I hope you can find happiness (and beautiful sadness) soon.

[–]lunajay 1 point2 points ago

thank you, I hope you know how much a comment like this means.

Depression is not necessarily sadness, nor do I believe it originates from a contrast of feelings. Depression can be spontaneous and without reason. To claim it can only exist relative to happiness diminishes its significance.

It sucks, but this is true. Clinical depression isn't really about a cosmic balance of sadness to make you appreciate your happiness... clinical depression is a disorder that takes away your ability to feel happy about much at all, and can even make it so you don't really feel much of anything at all.

[–]ChavodelOcho 2 points3 points ago

I agree with both your statements but I think we're missing the point of this statement. Altough Butters is describing a deep sadness, it's not depression he's describing.

I'm in the middle of reading a book, Healing the Child Within I think it's called. It's kind of a jump start to healing from abuse, ptsd, and beginning to cope with codependency. In it, it describes someone that is 'whole or complete' as someone that can appreciate life (and themselves) as fallible and human. In accepting that life has it's ups and downs and that we hold no control over any of it, we can appreciate that sadness like any other emotion we experience. It's not one more straw breaking the camel's back, as every blow that life deals someone with depression can be. Instead, it's proof that we are alive.

I'm not there yet but it was eerie to come across this on /r/depression after having read it earlier in the day.

[–]harnessthrowaway 2 points3 points ago

And I've experienced that... But the depression I feel is not nearly the same thing. It's a sad despair numbness without reason (or at least grossly disproportionate to its cause).

I read the whole thing in butters voice, sure love that show. Made my day a bit better.

[–]dinosaursrsr 4 points5 points ago

I was just broken up with...I don't even want to get to this point. I don't want any of this at all

[–]starwarscreature 1 point2 points ago

What do I do if I feel nothing?

[–]sidcool1234 3 points4 points ago

Then he says that it's anyway better than the faggy goth kids.

[–]NickMoonbeam 1 point2 points ago

The sweet is so much sweeter when you have some sour (roughly stolen from Vanilla Sky).

[–]oliver_tate 1 point2 points ago

Butters is by far one of my favourite south park characters, him and Randy <3

[–]Dohr 0 points1 point ago

Anyone know what episode this is from?

[–]jeebuz7 3 points4 points ago

It's from the season 7 episode, Raisins.

I've only had one bad breakup, and surprisingly enough the thing that helped me the most was Day9. Different perspectives and humor can really help sometimes.

[–]DominantTeacher 0 points1 point ago

Love this!!

[–]Fr_ENT 0 points1 point ago

Same!

[–]GodofPH 0 points1 point ago

God damn it. Butters broke right through the depressive mood I was in.

[–]Mouseman96 0 points1 point ago

i dont feel anything.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Come on people. South Park is just encouraging the same dismissive attitude that people on r/depression rail on. That's what this entire episode is about, a bunch of "emo goth kids" who don't have any real problems and just need to buck up.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are geniuses. Everyone should know this.
