I expected it to be a gif that would change to make my finger point into some dudes asshole or something. I'm not sure if I'm glad or disappointed.

Now I feel that I have to make this.

Do you also struggle with those ridiculously complex directions on entryways? You know, like "PUSH" and "PULL"?

Or...wait...that's probably just me.

[–]SmoothWD40 1 point2 points ago

Also those insanely difficult buttons on elevators like close or open door? They....they do nothing!

[–]mamajamerson 2 points3 points ago

I thought I was the only one!

[–]wierdo5000 1 point2 points ago

I still dont get it.

If you want an explanation, the best I can come up wiyh is the shading in between them.

[–]megalurkeruygcxrtgbn 1 point2 points ago

around the edges as well.

[–]jermzdeejd 10 points11 points ago

Yea just got done wiping the finger mark from my monitor.

[–]nemesiscw 76 points77 points ago

More trippy. The boxes of A and B are the same shade of grey.

[–]whitewateractual 109 points110 points ago

Yeah, but you can't finger this one

[–]rohanivey 30 points31 points ago

Not with that attitude, you can't.

[–]minche 33 points34 points ago

you kinda can

[–]OsterGuard 18 points19 points ago

kinda

[–]itshotinmycar 1 point2 points ago

kind of....

[–]Libido 10 points11 points ago

[–]Hanuu 7 points8 points ago

What?

[–]SHSzilla 36 points37 points ago

[–]s3gfau1t 21 points22 points ago

I did it like this. I tried doing it the way you've done it, but it completely breaks the illusion for me. This way there still appears to be a gradient.

[–]gizram84 3 points4 points ago

Use paint to cut and paste. A and B are the exact same color.

[–]FissureKing 6 points7 points ago

[–]RocketMan350 7 points8 points ago

Nothing is real anymore.

[–]syuk 1 point2 points ago

I remember when I first saw this i had to load it up into paintshop to check it out. Think it was the first time I went 'woah' after seeing an illusion.

[–]mrhappyoz 1 point2 points ago

Interestingly enough, it seems if you close one eye, it becomes immediately obvious, but as soon as you open your eye again, the perception changes back to 2 colours. Nice one!

[–]SuperHot 15 points16 points ago

haha reminds me of this

[–]CptOblivion 4 points5 points ago

The arrow one is the best.

[–]Procify 6 points7 points ago

That Paula Deen illusion literally makes zero sense to me.

[–]longmover79 14 points15 points ago

To actually see the bottom one get lighter in front of your eyes, slowly move your finger up to expose the join. Why you lie to me brain?

[–]skitzo12 47 points48 points ago

.....this isn't wtf.

[–]Devilheart 9 points10 points ago

Well That's Fascinating

[–]Drumking00 3 points4 points ago

WHAT IN POSEIDON'S PISS IS GOING ON!?!

[–]Actually_JesusChrist 2 points3 points ago

If you blur your vision you will see it without using your finger.

[–]ElizabethGray 2 points3 points ago

This is not WTF. Nothing is anymore.

[–]WGMindless 2 points3 points ago

[–]FreaXoMatic 7 points8 points ago

Um perhaps my screen is shit but the lower half is lighter. Even with covering and fingering the middle.

[–]solblurgh 1 point2 points ago

you don't have to finger the middle....

[–]SquareBomb 1 point2 points ago

I didn't notice a difference when covering up the middle with my finger either, so I used photoshop to check. Both boxes are indeed 7F7F7F.

[–]gmoney1393 6 points7 points ago

How does that work?

[–]quietmasturdebater 15 points16 points ago

Your original perception of the color is affected by the contrast created by the background. The block with the dark background appears lighter and the block with the light background appears darker because it's relative to the background. When you put your finger there, it's the same color touching both blocks at the same time, so the color of your finger is used the comparison rather than the background, so it's the same for both.

[–]cjriley9 13 points14 points ago

The background has nothing to do with it. It has to do with where we perceive that the light is coming from and the shadows that it casts. our brain sees this as what it looks like when we cover it but it understands that (in real life situations) in order for that lower (perceived as shaded) square to appear as if it is the dark grey is for it not to be that same dark gray. So it's just our brain messing with us actually. the background could be just pictures of cats but as long as there was a shadow we would see the illusion.

[–]bardstown 1 point2 points ago

In design school we were taught this concept as Simultaneous Contrast.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_effect

[–]sonataink 1 point2 points ago

This is essentially correct. I'd recommend people look up the Anchoring Theory of Lightness Perception (Gilchrist, 1999) as it's the leading explanation of these effects. It basically rests on the Gelb Effect: In the absence of all other information, we assume that the surface with the highest luminance in a framework (group of surfaces under the same illumination, determined by various factors) is white.

Illustration of the Gelb Effect

We then anchor to white in order to judge the relative reflectances, and therefore perceived lightness of surfaces and objects within the framework.

[Long time lurker, first time poster. Never thought my first post would be about a topic that has been the bane of my existence for the past semester at college]

[–]_ChipSkylark 4 points5 points ago

Psychologist here. Basically, you learn during your life that, when something is in a shadow, it looks darker than it really is. Your brain calculates this into seeing things and makes you think like "oh, it's a shadow, it really is a lighter grey". This said, most things you see are learned instead of really what you see.

[–]gmoney1393 1 point2 points ago

Brilliant!

[–]Kvraj 1 point2 points ago

Woah.

[–]redditabusesme 49 points50 points ago

I'm calling bullshit on this one. The top and bottom aren't the same color. The top of the bottom trapezoid is a lighter color and you obscure this part when you put a finger over it.

[–]shz 94 points95 points ago

Maybe this helps: http://i.imgur.com/nH8Z5.gif

[–]fAntom3188 5 points6 points ago

You are strengthening his point

[–]ljuk 11 points12 points ago

They're the same colour if you use (brainfart) check the dead center of them in Photoshop.

I still don't like the illusion, though. It's done by allowing the bottom 3D object to reflect light in the environment (creating an almost white top), while not allowing the same kind of reflection for the top object. Sure, the top block has some sort of shadows to make it 3D-ish but it's not nearly as pronounced as it is in the bottom one.

The one nemesiscw put up is better since it doesn't cheat. If that makes any sense.

[–]mdalin 1 point2 points ago

They're totally the same color as soon as you cover up the part that isn't!

[–]hoover456 5 points6 points ago

Came here to say this. Tried it with something thin enough to just cover the black line in between and despite the fact that most of the bottom part is the same as the top part, the top part of the bottom shape is a different color

[–]whatthefuckdumptruck 6 points7 points ago

Obviously the white part isn't the same color as the grey part. The gradient between them is what helps creates the optical illusion.

[–]PinkDevil 1 point2 points ago

So they aren't the same. They are about 90% the same.

[–]mookama 1 point2 points ago

I literally said what the fuck.

[–]Lalabadie 1 point2 points ago

Wow! I tried, and now I see a fingerprint between the two boxes!

[–]hardyvone 1 point2 points ago

Successfully fucked my mind.

[–]infernusx0 1 point2 points ago

Why you gotta fuck my mind like that?

[–]RandomActOfUpvotes 1 point2 points ago

Oi Gestalt!

[–]oSand 1 point2 points ago

Perhaps the illusion is created by your finger.

[–]IISpadezII 1 point2 points ago

[–]knifegash 1 point2 points ago

I put my finger across vertically, and thought ''what is this foolishness?''

Then I put it horizontally, and I smiled :)

[–]dinner-dawg 1 point2 points ago

Initially saw it as one colour, had to focus to see the 'two colours'. Backtafront.

[–]Effervesser 1 point2 points ago

YOU'RE A WITCH!!!

[–]garop7g 1 point2 points ago

But they are not the same color. The lower box has a white gradient on top of it. When you place your finger across the middle, you cover the gradient part. it's a good illusion, showing you how your eye and brain interpret the colors based on contrast (with the background, and each other), but to say they are both the same color, as a flat fact, is not true.

[–]jvenable2893 1 point2 points ago

No they're not the top one is darker the bottom one has a shadow cast on it because of the way its tilted. You are all stupid. Also wrong subreddit man.

[–]bdotlloyd 1 point2 points ago

This is an example of Albers Interaction of Color: http://www.speednoisemovement.com/iioc/

*4 years of art school finally paying off

[–]mr_sardonicus 1 point2 points ago

At first glance the boxes were different colors but as soon as I read they were the same my brain auto corrected without needing the finger

[–]DarnTheseSocks 1 point2 points ago

Your brain automatically corrects the perceived color of an object based on the visual cues about the surrounding light. Dark objects that appear to be covered by shadows are automatically perceived as lighter. If you take away or override the light source cues, you go back to perceiving the actual color.

[–]banhammer1 1 point2 points ago

god will fix this in the next update

[–]Tastygroove 1 point2 points ago

False, the edge you cover is white.

The box is 90% the same color.

[–]Greenleaf208 1 point2 points ago

Dashicray sir! Dashicray!

[–]ofMischief 1 point2 points ago

top box is the darker grey color, bottom box is same darker grey color except for the very top portion just before the line is a white or lighter grey color to cause the illusion with your eyes when you place your finger over the line thus concluding no real illusion but one that you have created for yourself.

[–]confusedjake 1 point2 points ago

The top part of the bottom shape is a lighter colour, hence when you cover it with a finger it changes your perception. This illusion doesnt work since the two shapes arent identical is colour.

[–]lalondtm 2 points3 points ago

top one still looks darker

[–]wheenus 0 points1 point ago

Gradients ftw

[–]InquisitorKaede 0 points1 point ago

HA HA! SURROUNDING-RELATIVE COLOR PERCEPTION!

WHAT A NOVEL IDEA!

Not gonna lie I did hold up my finger.

[–]Wild2098 2 points3 points ago

Held a pen up....but it was NOT at the screen.

[–]Scrupuless 0 points1 point ago

Hate to burst your bubble but they are not the same colour due to the fact the bottom box has a white stripe mimicking a light source at the top here the boxes meet (this is what your finger covers to reveal the illusion), technically the top one is solid grey whilst the bottom one is grey with a white stripe across the top.

[–]Sharradan 0 points1 point ago

Thank god those arrows are there, otherwise I would have no idea what boxes I am supposed to look at!

[–]infiniteladies 0 points1 point ago

How the hell is this WTF?

[–]Boring_Machine 0 points1 point ago

I think its because your brain expects a shadow on the lower box.

[–]puddingfarts 0 points1 point ago

even weirder is that the color used to highlight the words is the same on the top and the bottom

[–]skytro 0 points1 point ago

[–]SkepticalSagan 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one that sees them as EXACTLY the same color without effort?

[–]unknown_poo 0 points1 point ago

If you focus just on the dark grey portion of the bottom object, both appear as the same shade of grey.

[–]Khue 0 points1 point ago

In defense of the brain, the bevel/gradient in the top section of the bottom box is not the same color.

[–]Imamjanedoe 0 points1 point ago

I decrectedntwo different shades of grey

[–]bigstoney 0 points1 point ago

they arent the same color...... leans monitor back...... oh yeah

[–]jsgilly20 0 points1 point ago

It's all bullshit anyway, yes the two are the same colour (the main part is anyway) they are both hex colour #7f7f7f however the top of the bottom box isn't which is what creates the illusion so when you look at it it looks lighter. Middle area is hex code #e3e3e3 so clearly you can see there is different colours involved here. It's just when you place your finger over the middle you are covering this part where the different colour lays so it is no longer breaking up the image and the "illusion" is created.

[–]themauwinator 0 points1 point ago

Its because just the bottom is the same color

[–]iesvs 0 points1 point ago

Somebody get the goddamn children off the internet. Only children post these stupid fucking optical illusions thinking no one has ever seen them.

[–]Maxwell1234 0 points1 point ago

Has no one seen a gradient before?

[–]ahairylumberjack 0 points1 point ago

What is this sorcery?!?

[–]Batrok 0 points1 point ago

[–]veterejf 0 points1 point ago

STOP PLAYING WITH MY BRAIN!

[–]andrewcm2 0 points1 point ago

Mind is blown. I'm easily amused when I'm drinking.

[–]extruder 0 points1 point ago

This is really weird. To me, they're obviously the same color. Illusions like this used to work on me, but honestly, I was expecting to look at the comments and see "duh, of course they're the same".

Maybe it's because I'm horribly depressed and that's had some effect on my brain chemistry...I tried the other one, with the cylinder and the shadows, and didn't see the illusion there either.

[–]luminiferousaethers 0 points1 point ago

The bottom value still looks slightly lighter.

[–]steakmeout 0 points1 point ago

I think you'll find that the compression algorithm makes them two slightly different colours.

[–]fugslidy 0 points1 point ago

I put my finger on the screen and it asked do I want to save this picture... Stupid smartphone

[–]Abscurat 0 points1 point ago

I believe you, no need to put my finger anywhere.

[–]teimenosce 0 points1 point ago

Most of the portion of the boxes are the same color; however, not all portions are. For example, the "top border" (25%) of the bottom box is slightly lighter than the rest of the bottom box. When you put your finger across the middle of the page, you are covering up this 25% portion of the bottom box and it appears the illusion is correct.

Here is an edited version where I cropped the section I am talking about and compared to the top and bottom boxes. Proof: http://imgur.com/2GLMh

[–]TubesBestNoob 0 points1 point ago

I congratulate OP on creating a very high number of monitor smudges across the world today!

[–]afihavok 0 points1 point ago

So cover the part thats not the same color and then theyre the same color... thats cool.

[–]CptOblivion 0 points1 point ago

To be fair the edges of the boxes are different values, and if you account for shading then the bottom is lighter.

But yes, the value in the center of each box is the same.

[–]FRINGEclass 0 points1 point ago

Didn't work on my phone!! :/

[–]RocketMan350 0 points1 point ago

Brains are dumb.

[–]pjohnson07 0 points1 point ago

50 Shades of Grey?

[–]AustNerevar 0 points1 point ago

Okay...it just changes your perspective of the color, thus the illusion terminology. The bottom portion of the lower box is still slightly a shade lighter than the upper one. So, they aren't the same color.

[–]xucoalex 0 points1 point ago

It's true. We do not perceive color in absolute terms!

[–]trampus1 0 points1 point ago

These boxes are mostly the same color.*

[–]drgonzo69 0 points1 point ago

I tried this on my phone and realised my finger was too fat for the illusion to work properly. So fuck this image.

[–]Hamburginator 0 points1 point ago

Heeeyyyy, this was in a documentary my teacher showed in my physics class.

[–]robinparlow 0 points1 point ago

Leave r/WTF and never come back.

[–]scribbling_des 0 points1 point ago

They are both grey, butnthey aren't the exact same shade. The bottom box is slightly lighter than the top. I would prove this with photoshop skills, but I'm on and iPad.

[–]Cruel_Intention 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was some light trick so I flipped my monitor around and it was still the same..the people at the library officially think I've lost it.

[–]Ralfnader66 0 points1 point ago

[–]SovereignAxe 0 points1 point ago

[–]StickyNinja 0 points1 point ago

[–]DaAvalon 0 points1 point ago

[–]therealpaulyd 0 points1 point ago

[–]bryguy894 0 points1 point ago

Just painted the walls of my bedroom gray. Can't wait for the nightly mind fuck

[–]SexualHarasmentPanda 0 points1 point ago

Of course they are the same color if you put your finger over the gradiant.

[–]gee_what_isnt_taken 0 points1 point ago

LATERAL INHIBITION.

[–]CannibalIowa 0 points1 point ago

Does not work for me

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

The lighter upper portion of the bottom trapezoid gives the semblance of shade difference, but the bottom portion of the bottom trapezoid is the same as the one on top. Covering the middle with your finger simply hides the lighter portion of the bottom trapezoid. It's not really an illusion/mind-fuck because the two trapezoids aren't exactly the same color due to the bottom one having a gradient.

[–]Krail 0 points1 point ago

... Am I the only one who doesn't see the illusion at all?

I mean, yeah... the boxes look like they're the same color to me without having to cover up the horizon line.

[–]goisart 0 points1 point ago

It's called Joseph Albers.

I couldnt get it because of my phone

[–]Kracus 0 points1 point ago

That was strange... They both look the same color to me (without the finger) yet I've seen this illusion before and they did look different. I had to stare at the illusion for about a full minute before I started seeing one get darker and the other lighter.

[–]Margaritashoes 0 points1 point ago

Clean monitor? Now wipe your finger across it.

[–]vexata_quaestio 0 points1 point ago

It's not an ilusion! The bottom box clearly gets darker due to the proximity of my finger...

[–]spartaninspace 0 points1 point ago

are anyone's eyes bad enough to really think those are the same colour?

[–]MpegEVIL 0 points1 point ago

I don't know of a single person who hasn't seen this at least once, on or off reddit. This is really unoriginal and you should be downvoted to hell.

[–]joncanoe 0 points1 point ago

didn't buy it; had to use colorzilla to be sure. rgb: 127,127,127 for both... my eyes have failed me.
