Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

in Civ tutorials are not an option, you sit down, pay attention, and get goddamned educated!

[–]Blackmar 1 point2 points ago

yea first time i played Civ 5 (first civ game for me) i didn't pay attention to anything, needless to say i didn't get very far in my first game.

Denounce everybody without a sufficient military to defend you against the world's superpowers. If by some happenstance you manage to survive to unlock nuclear missiles, divert all of your resources to producing them. Proceed to use missiles on your own tiles. This is ideally done as North Korea.

This is how I win every game. OP, THIS IS HOW YOU WIN IN CIV!

Although it may be different in V, I've only played III, IV, and Rev.

Lesson 1: Never trust Rome, England, France, Germany, the Aztecs, Greece, Songhai, Denmark, or Japan.

Lesson 2: Once you go to war with someone, everyone hates you for being a Warmongering Menace To The World. Also if you make peace with the person who attacked you, expect to be attacked again pretty much right after the treaty expires.

Lesson 3: Rivers. Always build cities on River tiles if you can. And next to mountains, on hills, near resources, etc.

I could go on but I won't. That should be enough to get you started.

Your forgot India. Gandhi is a treacherous, warlike bastard.

[–]GX348 0 points1 point ago

Actually no, not anymore. They fixed that. He hasn't been a warmonger in any of the games I've played recently. It's mostly been me that goes after him because Delhi always seems to be built next to some really nice resources...

Correct.

"Didn't bother with a tutorial"

Thats kind of what they are for, to show you how to play.

[–]santadog 7 points8 points ago

Perhaps that is why he has no idea what he's doing....?

[–]PixParavel 2 points3 points ago

Haha same here. Even after playing the tutorial I still don't get it.

[–]picklecannon 1 point2 points ago

Yeah same. I just kind of build stuff and try to go towards the resource research paths (coal, iron, uranium, etc). Also I only ever do/agree to research agreements, and only trade for luxury resources when cities demand them. Worked pretty well for me.

[–]jacktors 2 points3 points ago

You need to understand the basics, but other than that, it's all about making the most of any advantages your civ has and exploiting and weakness in the enemy. Play on a low setting until it's too easy!

[–]orangecauliflower 3 points4 points ago

Congrats on the purchase of a great game, I hope you have many enjoyable hours ahead.

[–]SOPA_NO 2 points3 points ago

Beware: Once you understand it you will not be able to leave your computer screen.

Your life will consist of 'One... More... Level...' OP, you have been warned.

Acquire Giant Death Robot

Win.

[–]Jaddmaster 2 points3 points ago

my early game consists of spamming catapults and trebuchets, then once i get mechanized infantry I just mass produce those and wreck everything. And nuclear missiles. Tons of nuclear missiles (especially with Russia)

[–]DrinkerofJuice 2 points3 points ago

I tend to stay relatively passive throughout early game in terms of war. It seems aggression early on just wrecks your economy, and takes too long. I just like to boost my economy and culture way up, get some allies, and then crush all the assholes who fucked with me early on (Always England, Greece, Rome, Egypt, and China)

Fucking dicks.

[–]Jaddmaster 2 points3 points ago

Fucking France and Rome. The two civs i always aim to destroy last every game.

[–]DrinkerofJuice 4 points5 points ago

It seems like England and Rome are always the backstabing whores. "Would you like to make a trade agreement with Englannnnd?"

"NO!"

[–]Gud84 1 point2 points ago

It's just not those guys. Spain too. She is all over the place. She is chaos incarnate. There can be no peace, no deals,no mercy. There is only one solution to Spain.

Tea party?

[–]healbot42 3 points4 points ago

Lucky for you it's the easiest Civ to learn. I remember 3 game with a 200ish page manual. You better bet I read the entire thing before I played the game.

[–]Cheeseyx 5 points6 points ago

And there's a fair chance you still weren't prepared to win a game :P

[–]Kinomi 1 point2 points ago

I had played the original 2 Civs (not III or IV) I still had no idea what I was doing.

[–]kneearrows 1 point2 points ago

I just got it too, I learned right away though. Now I can't stop playing

[–]arcticwolf91 1 point2 points ago

I did the tutorial, and I still have no idea what I'm doing.

[–]TheTossedCone 1 point2 points ago

I've been playing Civ for years. Just ask and I'll answer.

[–]Aldesso 1 point2 points ago

Here is a tip from a pro player. Denounce everyone new you meet and Demand Demand Demand.

Other players will look up to you when they see your determination. Go to war with a bigger nation and get praised for your courage.

Also only have one city. If you create a new one, give it away to the next best civilization.

Too many cities lead to too much micromanagment and nobody wants that.

[–]sousedpoet 1 point2 points ago

one more turn...

10 hours later, you finally finish a game...

then start another one...

[–]AloeRP 0 points1 point ago

Fucking obviously.
