Install some flavor of a bootable Linux (slackware is nice)

Run this

sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=1M

No reason to dump either HDD or especially the laptop. Overwrites the whole fucking drive with random data that means nothing. Can use /dev/zero instead if crunched for time. Not 100% invincible (forensics scientists can defeat this if they're bored/well paid enough) but should defeat most. The more times you do it the more secure.

Well, a quick format won't do shit for you. A full format might help, but there are cases in which it won't (too small a partition, parts routed around by the OS for defect sectors, some of which might still work etc). Just grab a copy of DBAN, boot with it and let it run and you're save.

Computer forensics can still pull data from the drive if they wanted. Replacing the hard drive would have been cheaper and easier. Or no drive and Linux live usb to still use it without spending money for a new hard drive

I've recovered entire Hard drives that have been formatted and had Windows Re-installed.

Most that i don't get...say if there are 10,000 photos...maybe 2 will be damaged.
