Dresdencodak.com

Give some credit to the creator of such good work. You should also go read the "hob" story, great illustration and depth of character through out all of Aaron Diaz's work.

[–]Mylon 39 points40 points ago

www.dresdencodak.com <- Clickable

[–]EmLeingod 19 points20 points ago

Oh, praise Darwin! For a second there I thought I was gonna have to copy paste.

[–]Almondcoconuts 9 points10 points ago

What is this? 2003?

[–]joeknowswhoiam 2 points3 points ago

One of my favourite simple improvement in the recent Firefox version, select the text and right click, if it detects a form of potential URL there are three options to open the the URL in the current tab, new tab or new window.

[–]barnibusvonkreeps 2 points3 points ago

Chrome does that too fyi.

[–]cinebox 1 point2 points ago

damn, why doesn't Safari do that :/

[–]LincPwln 0 points1 point ago

Nice try, Firefox salesman.

[–]joeknowswhoiam 0 points1 point ago

Well until recently I had to use a Firefox addon to do this simple task (Linky), so I'm not sure everyone will get the joke.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

I'm glad you wrote clickable next to that or I wouldn't have known what to do.

[–]Uninspried 15 points16 points ago

Not only does it not link to the original author, it has some other sites watermark on it...

[–]MiguelMenendez 0 points1 point ago

The site it came from links back to the original artist.

[–]vaaarr 7 points8 points ago

Source, more specifically

There's also an entire little gallery of similar stickman sketches here. The guy with the antenna hat is usually the author!

[–]jweede 10 points11 points ago

I UPBOAT FOR AARON DIAZ, ALWAYS

[–]DandyPirate 3 points4 points ago

Loved his comics and completely forgot them. The lanterns one was my favourite.

[–]GideonJWells 2 points3 points ago

I was coming here to see if someone else thought it was Dresden Codak or a knock off. It is a shame someone tried stealing this.

[–]pyvlad 2 points3 points ago

One of the most beautiful comics I've seen yet. Astounding detail, plotline, and a fascinating discussion on transhumanism.

[–]pseudopsyche 1 point2 points ago

Link to the "hob" story?

[–]DangerToDangers 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I came here just to say that. Probably not OP's fault but it pisses me off when other sites don't link the source and put their own shitty watermark on top.

This is what I love about reddit.

[–]MiguelMenendez 1 point2 points ago

But the original site does link back...

[–]DangerToDangers 0 points1 point ago

Never mind then!

[–]Shootemsup 0 points1 point ago

Was not worth it, 0/10 comment, just a guy being a complete arse because I said where the comic was from.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I want to know...

[–]cinebox 0 points1 point ago

I do too

[–]MegaZambam 42 points43 points ago

I would take a bath with a lot of soap and run.

[–]IchooseYou 11 points12 points ago

I like the way your mind works.

[–]godlessfuck 2 points3 points ago

Nice! Maybe I'm reading too much into this but... That's a really creative example of doing something with this life here and now in a whimsical way rather than the other side, the side of judgement and delusion in order to have a better "life after death" (what a fucking oxymoron) instead of living now.

[–]sonickoala 1 point2 points ago

How does the idea of people filling their "hole" with material possessions or other people relate to the concept of an afterlife in anyway whatsoever? It would seem as though those two are very much "in the moment" type things. It seems as though you're focusing too much on one tiny aspect of the comic and trying to make a big deal out of it.

[–]godlessfuck 0 points1 point ago

Like I said, I could definitely be reading too much into it. To me it seems many people do have a "hole" they don't know how to fill and can fall into using self-righteousness or judgement and the hopes of an afterlife to fill it rather than something so cute, simple, and creative as using it to make bubbles.

TL;DR Don't take anything someone with the name "godlessfuck" says very seriously!

[–]OrangeWool 0 points1 point ago

It's only an oxymoron with your definition of what is true.

[–]godlessfuck 1 point2 points ago

Hmmm... This discussion has the danger of becoming very deep in philosophical BS pretty quickly. I don't really want to open up that can of worms. I'll just leave it at the idea of being "alive" while dead is contradictory and a non-corporeal existence doesn't fit with the current biological definition of life. One could extrapolate or interpret such philosophical concepts as far as they want to I guess...

[–]OrangeWool 0 points1 point ago

Note the keyword after, though. With this mindset, death could be thought of as a stage, or even just a divider. Good call.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

is their a problem with this?

[–]godlessfuck 0 points1 point ago

Problem? Um... No? Do you mean "is there a problem with philosophical discussion"? Not at all. I just didn't have the energy(or requisite brain power) to see it through like it would deserve.

[–]gamergrl1018 1 point2 points ago

Yaaay bubbles!

[–]jyz002 1 point2 points ago

something tells me this has been a top comment from one of the past reposts...

[–]ariheretic 1 point2 points ago

I can blow bubbles in the shower by soaping up my chest and arms, and then kind of crossing my arms in front of me, like I'm giving myself a hug, and then slowly expanding my arms out to make a sort of circle, like I'm making room for someone to squeeze in between me and my arms.

If I rub just right before expanding, I can make that bubble sheen stretch between my arms, and blow to make a giant bubble.

It's how I spend a lot of shower time. Water running down my back, giving myself hugs and blowing bubbles.

[–]RateTheComment -2 points-1 points ago

6.5/10 I enjoyed your imagery. Would read again.

[–]redbeardo 14 points15 points ago

Perhaps the only reason we look for meaning in our lives is that we start with the assumption that there must be a meaning.

[–]Gerhard2202 6 points7 points ago

This is so true. You don't find meaning, you make it.

[–]Tachyx 6 points7 points ago

I beat up some guy and stole his meaning.

[–]Plonqor 1 point2 points ago

This has been my view for a long time. I don't see any reason to assume there is a "meaning of life". Just enjoy the life you have.

[–]welliamwallace 1 point2 points ago

Or perhaps, because it drives exploration, improvement, and analysis.

[–]oag721 19 points20 points ago

I love this.

I don't care that it's a repost, or that it's a link to a comic strip because it's the only thing positive and/or constructive I've seen on /r/atheism in a long time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Genuine question:

What is positive or constructive about this?

Also, what is negative/unconstructive about the majority of posts around here?

[–]Flamingmonkey923 1 point2 points ago

This comic really hits the nail on the head. Everyone has some sort of discontent with the world and their place in it. Some people try to overcome this with money and success, or religion, or sports, or sexual conquest. It's all a drive to build up our own egos and fill the void with it. The truth is that hole never goes away. Even if you're worth $8 Trillion, or you convince yourself in a perfect afterlife, or you have a threesome with Kate Upton and Overly Attached Girlfriend, that hole will still be there. It's only by accepting it, and not trying in vain to fill it, do we reach peace of mind. It's not to say that you shouldn't aim to achieve those things... but you shouldn't be emotionally dissatisfied just because you haven't.

I think this is the root cause for a lot of the anger and frustration atheists have arguing with religious people. Just talk to a creationist. It's rage inducing, isn't it? Why? Because on some emotional level, you won't be happy with yourself unless you can convince them to change their mind. Ironically, they'll be more likely to change their mind if they just see how content you are without a belief in any gods. If you just accept yourself, and accept the fact that you might not change their mind, then you can talk to them without getting frustrated and they'll be curious to find out why you're so relaxed and self-secure even in the face of disagreement.

As for the content on r/atheism right now... just look at it. I haven't even browsed in months because it's so terrible. It's all just shitty jokes and memes making fun of religious people. In r/atheism. It's not funny to atheists because we've seen that shit before. We get it. Religious people make really, really bad arguments. It's not an effective way to convince religious people to reconsider their religion because it's mocking them... it just makes them dig their heels in harder, and it gives them an easy way to rationalize all the negative stereotypes that they already had about atheists.

I'm not one to participate in the "r/atheism is a circle-jerk" circle-jerk, so I'm going to be frank and honest. The top 5 posts on the subreddit are all shitty right now. 2 posts about how stupid religious people are. One post about how the OP is a super-awesome-smart biology major who can publicly humiliate any creationist. One post about being an asshole and leaving fake tips to punish an entire Christian Church for the actions of one Christian who may not have been a member of that church. And one post about Bender. That one is just... what is this, I don't even.

If we're actually concerned about the harm that religion is doing to society, then we should be doing something a bit more effective than getting together and making stupid jokes about stupid comments.

[–]damndirtyape 1 point2 points ago

I don't know...I actually don't get much from this comic. I liked the first three panels. But from what I can tell, the last one seems to be saying that it's good to have no motivation in life. Personally, that's not really a value I want to promote.

[–]Flamingmonkey923 0 points1 point ago

I don't really see that. Everyone else is trying to fill the hole in their chest with something, but this guy's alright just accepting that he's got a hole. Maybe he's got lots of money and lots of friends... he just doesn't let them define him.

At least that's what I take away. To each his own, I suppose.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This is just my viewpoint versus your viewpoint, but I really disagree with everything you've said.

It's great that some people can see this comic as deep and meaningful, but having read a lot of Dresden Codak, where the deep, meaningful, intellectual stuff is generally kind of didactic in the sense that you know that it's there and you know when he's just having fun, I really can't see the last part as anything other than a joke. It was kind of leading up to something deep and then didn't go there, and I don't get why everyone's so willing to shoehorn their desire for something self-affirming to be in the last panel into the mould of "a cool whistling noise."

I also don't agree that you will convince theists to convert by showing you're comfortable without a god. This is the tack I take with my family to avoid conflicts, and it does exactly what you would expect it to: nothing. Theists are already comfortable in their beliefs despite reality; a little more passive reality in front of them does nothing.

The tack I take with friends is to make them uncomfortable in their beliefs, not always aggressively, just with assertive debate. They need to think to themselves, "Christ, he's right. It is ridiculous," or, "I can't answer that. There is no good answer to that." You don't get them to think these things with silence. The first time I ever deconverted someone (And that makes it sound like I go about preaching, but I don't; I'm just not willing to back down from the topic if it springs up) was one of the best days of my life. Her whole family were bonkers, and she thanked me, even though she had been fighting with them and I was terrified that I'd caused this massive rift in her family.

Anyways, that's that. I don't think you're a moron or anything, but I definitely think you're wrong here, though I accept that I just might be too simple to get the true meaning of the comic.

As for the content here, I agree with you on some of this. The OP never claimed to be super-smart in the biology submission, and I actually really enjoyed that one. Posts about how stupid religious people are entertain me (within reason; one stupid religious person proves nothing, but the inability of theists at large to defend their idiot position is something we all need to be reminded of). The post about the fake tips was fucking stupid, I agree. And that post about Bender? I didn't see it, but I'm not confident that it was any good.

There's shitty content here and there's good content. It's a matter of opinion, of course, but I seriously don't think you believe that the comic about a whistling noise is the most constructive thing you've seen here in a while.

[–]Flamingmonkey923 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps I was unclear.

The tack I take with friends is to make them uncomfortable in their beliefs, not always aggressively, just with assertive debate. They need to think to themselves, "Christ, he's right. It is ridiculous," or, "I can't answer that. There is no good answer to that." You don't get them to think these things with silence.

I agree with this entirely. Silence is useless, and opening the door to discussions about religion in an assertive manner is key.

My point was simply that in the context of these discussions and debates, the most important thing to do is to remain calm. Far too many atheists get frustrated and emotional when they talk about religion with religious people. They get angry and call people stupid, and raise their voice, etc. etc. etc.

From a communications standpoint, it's near impossible to change anybody's mind once that starts happening. For one, attacking them as people is immediately going to get them into a defensive position where they are unlikely to change their mind about anything. Second, it often leaves them with no ability to save face -- they have to either stand their ground, or admit that they're stupid. Third, it becomes intuitively obvious to them that this atheist they're talking to needs them to change their minds in order to validate himself, which turns them off to anything the atheist says. In other words, the emotional neediness makes the atheist seem unsure of himself. Lastly, it gives them an easy rationalization for any negative stereotypes about atheists: they make emotional decisions not logical ones, they're angry, etc. etc.

In my experience, the best way to deal with people is just to explain my position and reasoning. I explain why I think the religious beliefs I was raised to hold are absurd, why faith is incompatible with a rational and scientific mindset, why belief in Jesus and non-belief in other gods is special pleading, and why I think it's lying when people teach children about these things as if they're certain of them. I do it all without attacking the person, telling the person his beliefs are ridiculous, or even asking about his beliefs. The story alone makes him feel like his beliefs are insane.

Then, I stop. I stop talking entirely. Now he's the one who's uncomfortable. I've turned the tables -- instead of trying to convince him that he's wrong, he wants to convince me that I'm wrong. He can continue questioning, and I can continue calmly making sense. He can tell me about his beliefs and I can explain why I see things very differently without making it about his intelligence.

Assertiveness is great. It's just that the emotional escalation I see from atheists in the real world and all over the internet isn't. I'll also note that the successful atheist debaters (Harris, Dillahunty, etc.) are very good at this.

Know what would be awesome? If after we died, everybody just went to hell and was tortured forever NO MATTER WHAT. No god, no Jesus, no Satan, no anything. After everyone dies, they burn and burn and burn and get tortured and knife raped in the genitals and have peppered centipedes shoved into their urethra until the end of time, which doesn't ever come!
