its kind of hard to tell but im not seeing any ribs, and that little guy looks healthy, horses will go to great lenghts to chew on grass and other greens, had one run right through electric wire to get to an apple tree once.

huh... wonder why no grass is growing inside the pin. in all the places near me, the horse yards have plenty of stuff growing in them. I guess it's practical to have your pets eat the lawn instead of have to mow it.

but then again, from this angle, I'm having trouble telling exactly what creature i'm looking at. it might be a calf for all I know.

He's probably turned out in a round pen judging from the panels, which are never used for permanent fencing, but common for making a small pen in which to work the horses, where it's best to have the flattest footing possible (thus, no grass) and a lot of times, people will turn them out there for short periods of time.

Sometimes, it is necessary to turn out horses in what's called a "dry lot" because some of them will eat themselves sick, and it can be very serious.

I was just thinking it looks like he's under a gate, not fencing. A gate would indicate a high-traffic area. High traffic area would be stomped on a lot, and not have much grass.

Often areas of the paddock are pretty worn down, because a horse prefers to eat in that corner. It is actually fairly common for a horse to reach under the fence to eat the grass outside rather than walk to the other side of the paddock to eat there. On the other hand, it is VERY dangerous for a horse to stick more than just their nose through/under the fence, as they can get caught and strangle themselves. Hopefully the owner is teaching the little guy to not do that, so he doesn't seriously hurt/kill himself doing it when he gets bigger.
