If it's stupid and it works, it isn't stupid.

[–]random314 3 points4 points ago

Nobody said it's stupid... it's actually pretty smart. It's actually a hybrid gas motorcycle.

[–]firebadmattgood 2 points3 points ago

Mechanical engineer checking in. That thing is stupid, and I mean beyond the obvious fact that it's got an unguarded chainsaw mounted on the front.

  • The mount is a 4 bar linkage in which one member has been braced by resting atop the (cantilivered) front fender. Since one member is the fork, that means the linkage is entirely cantilevered off of the head tube. The front member of the linkage is an open box (must necessarily be able to support a moment at the joints) that is connected at one end by cantilevers connected to the axle and by threaded fasteners going into through holes on the other end (unable to support axial moments). This breaks a ridiculous number of basic, fundamental rules of mechanical design.

  • There appears to be no method of adjusting the chain tension beyond moving the axle within the vertical dropouts. You'll notice that there are no tension adjusters on the axle nuts, so you're relying on friction in the nuts to keep that tension up.

  • The thing appears to rely solely on a coaster brake.

  • He clearly didn't dish the front wheel to provide clearance for a sprocket. Look how close the chain gets to both the wheel/spokes and the fork.

[–]wesinator 2 points3 points ago

you're just saying a bunch of words.

[–]mogto 0 points1 point ago

Not a mechanical engineer, just worked on plenty of things that require kludgint-- to adjust the chain tension, he could add a springed tensioner in the center of the chain, on the front motor mount, or if the back mounts can pivot, he could add washers on the back side of the nuts to tilt the motor up a bit. The second one would make the oil pressure screwy, but I think that's the least of his worries.

It's hard to tell since the picture is so small, but the center of the front right tube has been heated. This could mean two things. He might have bent both tubes outward, which could allow for him to add washers or a bearing between the sprocket and the wheel. But, possibly in addition, it does appear that a small rod has been welded to it. Not sure of its purpose. It might actually be a tensioner of some kind.

[–]Funkenwagnels 0 points1 point ago

yeah. he really should of taken the extra expense of hiring an engineer to help him design his chainsaw bicycle of death.

[–]shitterplug 0 points1 point ago

Ever seen a Solex?

[–]Stormzzzzz 0 points1 point ago

I'm a legit mechanical engineer, and I say there's not enough tension on some tension with braking tension!

Not only is it a motorcycle, it's a new weapon in development for use in the upcoming zombie apocalypse. Sure you may laugh at it now, but when WWZ is in full swing and your girly legs are tired from running, your tiny arms tired from swing golf clubs and baseball bats and other humorous but fairly ineffectual blunt weapons, you will thank whatever nonexistent gods you typically pray to when you hop on your Chainsaw Bicycle Mk2. Fuck you for making a joke out of this, it may be humanity's last hope for survival, and only an ignorant fool would find that funny. I hope that when the zombies come, your bloated ass gets trapped in a bar with your neurotic, overly attached ex-girlfriend. You are a poor excuse for a human being you appallingly mentally deficient twat.

[–]industrialbird 6 points7 points ago

I have a feeling it wouldn't work very well. You would run into one zombie. Get stuck on it. Then most likely get mauled by it or the ones nearby. One of the biggest things to think about during something like that is exposure. You wouldn't want to expose your entire body like that.

[–]alienbringer 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts exactly. The noise from the chainsaw motor running would draw in nearby zombies. So that would mean you would not want that to be going if you are trying to move about. It is not as fast as a real motorcycle for escape to warrant the noise, and not as stealthy as a bike. If you were trying to use it as a weapon it would be equally ineffectual. In order to kill a zombie you need to damage the brain (common knowledge). The way that the chainsaw is positioned it would run into the zombies gut. The zombie's innards would jam the chainsaw and now your once "mobile" bike is stuck. You are then swarmed by a horde of zombies and join their ranks. This does not even mention the splatter that you have to deal with to try to keep it from your eyes and mouth. Forget that the virus itself could be transmitted by ingesting an infected blood sample. If you swallow any sort of stomach / intestine, stuff from a rotting corpse you are going to have to deal with a whole host of bacteria and parasites. Yes a chainsaw is "oooh aaah" flashy, but as a zombie killing weapon it is a 0/10. Common rookie mistake, much like using a double barreled shotgun. shakes head in shame.

TL;DR -- Stupid idea to use during zombie apocalypse.

[–]SarahSEZ 3 points4 points ago

zombie apocalypse was the first thing that came to mind.

[–]PokeyHydra 1 point2 points ago

5/10. Not gradual at all.

[–]ScottyDntKnow 2 points3 points ago

I am already contemplating how I am going to create one of these when I get home. Have about 3 hours left at work to figure out the details.

Also what sort of fine/arrest do you think I would receive for driving one of these around in the States

[–]youRFate 0 points1 point ago

doesn't matter, just keep going. No one can ever stop you.

[–]kaiyotic 2 points3 points ago

not just russia my friend. this is from a Belgian tv show where a 15 year old shows how his chainsawbike works. (here you can only start riding regular mopeds when you're 16 so this was his way of cheating the law) though in all fairness he did remove the actual blade of the chainsaw, he's just using the motor

[–]cbrandolino 0 points1 point ago

Uh, thank god there's subtitles.

[–]kaiyotic 0 points1 point ago

hahah lol ppl that aren't from belgium might not get this, but in a tiny little country like ours there still are a crapload of different dialects. and some of those dialects are hard to understand for others, which is why this guy got subtitled in dutch.

[–]miba -1 points0 points ago

Google translation of Estonian article of the featured chainsaw: http://oregon.ee/index.php?page=info&action=Druzba%20sae%20tekkelugu

"Druzhba the yield of the entire Soviet Union." Author: Krister Stone (02/06/2002) Writer and translator Boris Kabur recently died at the age of 84. How long lived in his most famous invention, the hand-saw, Druzhba, which was used widely until the Soviet empire.

Chainsaws began to think of Boris Kabur 1947th while in prison camp.

Functional assembly of the saw, the Soviet Ministry of Forest Industries Erikonstrueerimisbüroos - so called camp, which was referred to scientists involved in disfavour - the time for years. If the saw finally managed to go out of their hands to work Kabur was named Thailand. However, the machine went into production under the name of the Druzhba instead. "They were, after all, prisoners and many of them depended on it," sighs Kaburile stood near the man.

Felling of trees much easier to have probably saved hundreds of chainsaw logging with to men's lives. "In later years, received a thank-you letters Kabur many survivors."

Rational person and a good peastarvutajana Kabur examined in a prison camp, too, whether it is beneficial to meet and get a päevatöönorm täisportsjon bread or labor standards and agree to meet half of bread. It was found that less work and less bread, give a greater guarantee of escape from death.

Former inmate used the aliases

1954th In Kabur got back to Estonia. It is not known whether and how much money he had received for the invention of the saw, but "a small rahakopikas he still was, as he himself said. But he sent it home, wife and son."

Just as many men returning from prison, could not Kaburil your family no longer live with the current start.

Thanks to the past was not easy to find work. As Kabur knew languages well - like in the Latin language, and acquired by the age of 15 while working histoloogialaboris lahanguprotokolle drawing - a man earned the money translator, in his familiar names behind the shadows. "The camp sat with a man, after all, the publishers did not dare to enter into agreements."

Over the years, translated into Estonian and Armenian Kabur and Sumerian epics.

60th In the early political climate softened. Kabur published the book "ROPS" on which the play was staged hugely successful. "In fact, this was not a children's theater, it was anti-Soviet spectacle, which was about the fact that man is not programmable. Alliksaar that said to him, but I do not know if others in the report said."

Some years later, Borka (as friends called Boris Kaburit) science fiction novel "Space coastal waters." 1973rd socialist countries, he won the grand prize of science fiction writers meeting in Poznan. "A good tone to the famous, the Russians must win in places, but the Poles were spitefully. Kabur was quite frightened, and spent all his prize money for making it." Druzhba used to catch on. "When we went on market, the village men were stopped and told us that, though a good saw. He was obviously pleased, but he was also surprised that so long as it was attached to the saw behind. She thought it was a little bizarre."

Kaburil omaleiutatud catch myself before. Were not needed. Although he enjoyed, through the living body of work done by people with an ax chop wood.

Kaburi ancestor was a shaman

Boris Kabur was a versatile man. All depended on a man, would have been his design and construction dietoloogiast literature reached an even wider profession. Indeed, young Kabur plan to acquire three higher education at the University of Tartu - Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, first, second and third medical faculty of Philosophy. Unfortunately, due to World War II were studied exactly half-way broken.

Is also the home of his gaudy. Biograafiates Kaburi used for still klišeelikku phrase "born töölisperekonnas" actually went to his roots in the male line in Mordovia, where his grandfather was a famous shaman. Kaburi father, named after the birth Baigunov, however, was a submariner, who came to Estonia after the First World War casualty. Here he showed up in the days of Independence, Johan Pitka finally got the courage and the Order of the Cross of Liberty. Kabur took the name of his wife names Baigunov eestistamise times.

Mid-90s died Kaburi Reinla wife Astrid, after a stroke suffered Borkat yourself. Although doctors initially did not provide P ealinna hope he recovered from the disease very far. "He was very good. How many times have started to tip, came back to life again," recalls lähedalseisja.

Translation of literary works and to engage more Kabur not begun. But he loved to watch TV broadcasts on the subject of military history, and record them.

"We went to a lot of people in the village and promised to health if, when we went to the lectures and the theater. But because he had strong disturbances, then we went to a wheelchair."

Life health deteriorated further in recent years. Cultural Endowment Kaburile allocated 15,000 euros in support of treatment, but the 28th January Kabur left in the weather.

Ain Kaalep friend says that Boris Kabur "was the optimistic person, just very optimistic. There is no doubt that he had a lot of plans for the future. He was a man who always had plans."

Valga County forests are still in use in some parts of the Druzhba. And, more rarely offered to sell the stock exchange in Golden.

Photos: Talented man on several fronts: Boris Kaburit felt the general public as a writer and translator. Men praised the forest but he invented the catch Druzhba.

SAW, let thy Druzhba NAME: Photo of men saved lives of many forest Kaburi tools come from Boris's own collection.
