Then why do I always hear women say "gasp - It's so big!"?

[–]andystealth 12 points13 points ago

Because they're not used to seeing someone with a pet elephant.

I almost wish I had one, just so I could be all "I think it's time we acknowledged the elephant in the room" all the time

[–]prajnadhyana 2 points3 points ago

They're kinda hard on the carpet though (in more ways than one.)

Intro to the movie Contact, in reverse, btw.

Here it is with sound, which actually adds quite a bit to the effect.

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,

Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...

The Earth began to cool,

The autotrophs began to drool,

Neanderthals developed tools,

We built a wall (we built the pyramids),

Math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries,

That all started with the big bang!

Am I the only one who thinks this stuff doesn't belong in r/atheism? There is a science subreddit...

[–]ShadowAssassinQueef 1 point2 points ago

What should be in here? Almost every post I see, "this should not be here." or, "why is this in r/atheism?". Give me an example of something to go in this sub Reddit.

Something to do with atheism. As in not believing in a deity, or god. I am not trying to be hostile, it is a very cool post, I just believe it would belong more in r/science.

[–]UnrelatedToAtheism 4 points5 points ago

Unrelated to atheism. Especially because you got it from /r/space.

This is pretty cool. I think it could have done a better job of showing the real scale of things if it were longer, but I imagine it already took a ton of skill and effort to create even this. Awesome animation, and thanks to the artist!

[–]Roarian 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure this is the beginning of the movie Contact, reversed.

[–]AdHom 0 points1 point ago

Well don't I just look like an idiot then.

[–]Teiresias666 1 point2 points ago

Interestingly, although the camera appears to move at constant speed, it moves slower and slower, decelerating at an absurdly rapid pace.

Nah, we're the same size we were yesterday (except for the cheezbugerz we ate)

I believe that we are actually quite BIG! billions of years ago stars exploded the dust from those stars created our solar system and US so although we are physically small in the universe we are made of material that was larger than we can imagine

[–]ChemicalSerenity 0 points1 point ago

Hmm... that's the opening sequence from Contact reversed, isn't it?

Looks familiar.

Edit: Ah, already noticed.

[–]ltroberts99 0 points1 point ago

That is the size of the Earth? Gabe Newell is bigger.

[–]keeblur 0 points1 point ago

Or looking at it from the angle of what composes us, we are actually pretty big.

[–]MuchDance1996 0 points1 point ago

Maybe your small, im a giant.

[–]HankMcCoy7410 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of one of my favorite opening sequences to a television series.

In the first few seasons of The Next Generation, the view was of leaving Earth and passing the other planets and going into space. It always made me realize how tiny we were.

In dutch but contains a better possible gif. Showing how tiny earth really is.

Its at the 8 and 13 minute mark.

They put the solar system in the wrong part of the Galaxy
