Thank you.

[–]AnticScarab3 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, Alexstrasza.

[–]eggbean 3 points4 points ago

Nice find. I feel a bit embarrassed now, as I made fun of my sister for falling for an obvious Photoshop job when she posted that picture on Facebook a few months ago.

[–]notandxor 1 point2 points ago

And I'm sure you went back to tell her that she was correct in the first place.

[–]tanjoodo 2 points3 points ago

Oh the things I mocked my family for believing which turned out to be right...

[–]EricFaust 1 point2 points ago

Eh, it lived to at least twenty years of age. That isn't too shabby, considering how many of them die as eggs.

[–]abs_like_putin 109 points110 points ago

+1 for skepticism

[–]olivermihoff 156 points157 points ago

I knew this was fake because the other 5 turtles were missing and nobody drank them. ಠ_ಠ

[–]Lonelan 20 points21 points ago

the Shredder got to em first

[–]Phoequinox 0 points1 point ago

Took me too long. Well-played, my friend.

[–]Kingmudsy 0 points1 point ago

+1 for the term anti-turtle

[–]hobbnet 9 points10 points ago

People still need to pick up their shit despite all of the above...

[–]digitalaudioshop 16 points17 points ago

It's the same angle, but not the same position. The turtle's feet in this picture are in a different position.

Edit: speeling.

[–]sellyberry 1 point2 points ago

You are right, the head is also in a different spot. It's the same turtle moved to a new location and photographed again.

[–]cowsmakedelicious 7 points8 points ago

Even if this isn't true, many places have recycling for this kind of plastic.

[–]virusoflife 3 points4 points ago

...which nobody uses. :(

[–]cowsmakedelicious 3 points4 points ago

I do! :) ...And potentially the people scarred by this image who haven't read the comments.

[–]Cael87 4 points5 points ago

Turtles head in a different position, angle of the shot is slightly different in both picks... yeah someone just left the ring on there and took another picture at another location. Kinda weird, you can see the plastic has become rigid instead of flexible by how the position of the plastic is the exact same after the turtle has moved/been moved. still disturbing to see, and I still cut my plastic rings up before tossing them due to things like this... just in case :p

[–]whatupnig 2 points3 points ago

Do you have a source for the modern rings degrading?

[–]informationmissing 4 points5 points ago

The rings are plastic, so inherently not biodegradable. Sunlight causes them to break into smaller pieces. These pieces never go away and eventually turn into a clear liquid that looks like water but is actually plastic. Source: a bunch of TED talks. On my phone now, so a link is not coming.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]whatupnig 0 points1 point ago

Thanks! I was curious because I still cut all the rings from soda and such before tossing them. This picture hit me hard as a kid :(

Edit: fucking auto correct

[–]PaulMcGannsShoes 12 points13 points ago

That is not a fucking sea turtle.

[–]danathebooklady 2 points3 points ago

Upvoted for thorough research and citing sources... But a picture like this isn't a bad reminder to be mindful of our plastic waste. Here is a similar example but with the little plastic ring from underneath caps from plastic bottles. I admit I'm not sure about the current degradability of that kind of plastic, but still I think I'll cut them from now on.

[–]Bob3333 9 points10 points ago

You are correct. It is a massive liberal conspiracy to get people to surrender their God-given right to litter.

[–]petedacook 1 point2 points ago

Are you saying you don't need to pick up your shit because the authenticity of the pic is questionable?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Modern plastic rings are biodegradable? I doubt this, and furthermore it still takes many months to years for these items to biodegrade, and thats when composted. Recycle, kids!

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]RedditRage 8 points9 points ago

Degrade? Yes.

Photodegrade? Yes.

Biodegrade? No.

It remains plastic, it remains a pollutant, it just breaks up into smaller parts, until it is no longer a solid item you can see.

[–]informationmissing 1 point2 points ago

Biodegradable is not the same as "breaks into small pieces quickly". Plastic is not biodegradable. There are some materials are out now that look and feel like plastic (some corn-based) and are biodegradable. Plastic is not.

[–]LerithXanatos 1 point2 points ago

Ha! That's so true!

[–]BreSput 0 points1 point ago

Plastic bags are a great deal thinner than six pack rings and just less durable. I'm not so sure about six pack rings. Can someone post an actual source so we don't just go back and forth with conjecture and random facts that don't really tell us anything?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I have loads of bags from shops saved up for use as bin bags and not one has ever falling apart unless it was torn. I have never seen one "degrade" even after being in the pantry for a couple years.

[–]informationmissing 0 points1 point ago

Good job being skeptical of the skeptics. Plastic is not biodegradable.

[–]ItsPronouncedTAYpas 0 points1 point ago

I like that you felt the need to remind people that you aren't anti-turtle. Like, who the fuck is anti-turtle. Are WBC protesting turtles now? Haha :)

[–]wanderederer1 0 points1 point ago

Good scepticism, but still recycle/dispose of your shit responsibly.

[–]sub_xerox 0 points1 point ago

So... what you're saying is, this bitch be lieing?

[–]Kind_Of_A_Dick 0 points1 point ago

Didn't Mythbusters do a bit on the rings also?

[–]L3Ki 86 points87 points ago

You could make the most expensive Ukulele EVER!

[–]Se7en_Sinner 9 points10 points ago

I don't know about expensive but it would be time consuming.

[–]AlphaRedditor 46 points47 points ago

An hourglass figure is not considered attractive for turtles.

[–]k80k80k80 24 points25 points ago

Dat shell...

[–]cumfarts 3 points4 points ago

if you think any figure is attractive on a turtle you are a weird fuck

[–]lengeta 1 point2 points ago

** Takes off red headband/mask.*

( ._.)

[–]xaninator13 73 points74 points ago

I always cut all the rings in these so that if it ever somehow ends up outside the dump, no animals get stuck

[–]camel69 8 points9 points ago

I don't think we even have them in my country ... or any country I've ever lived in. What are they used for?

[–]Fuck_Arcade_Fire 9 points10 points ago

Where are you from?!

[–]unsurebutwilling 7 points8 points ago

Honestly, I'm from Germany, and I have never seen them around here either...the whole concept of 6packs is rather uncommon. We have them, but only made out of cartridge, and only for bottles...

If you want beer you generally buy either a small crate of 11 or a normal one of 20 (x0.5 l ≈ 1 pint)

[–]Manberg 3 points4 points ago

America has 6 packs, 12 packs, 18 packs, 24 packs, and 30 packs. 6 packs are generally the only ones with plastic holding them together.

[–]cumfarts 0 points1 point ago

why 11?

[–]unsurebutwilling 1 point2 points ago

well, they didn't say: lets be goofy, and make a crate for 11 bottles...

a normal crate is 400mm x 300mm (roughly 16"x12") so they fit well on EUR-pallets, which are 1200mmx800mm (47"x31.5"), and that usually fits 40 crates...

so now, they just sliced the crate widthwise to ensure proper fitting on the standardized pallets and checked how many bottles could fit, and see there, BOOM!

11 bottles

[–]wanderederer1 0 points1 point ago

Yeah Germany is a civilised place. That's probably why you've never seen them.

[–]rayo2nd 4 points5 points ago

Switzerland here, either you buy 6 bottles in a cardboard box or 6 cans wrapped in a thin soft plasic foil

I've never seen those rings here

edit fixed second link

[–]Coenn 4 points5 points ago

Your second link is broken but I think you mean like this. I'm from The Netherlands and the situation is the same as in Switzerland.

[–]tineyeit 0 points1 point ago

I have to buy a 32 pack of soda before they plastic wrap them like that. I haven't actually seen a 6-pack in awhile though. People usually jsut buy the massive boxes of beer where ever I am.

[–]kkatatakk 1 point2 points ago

For holding these together.

[–]5-4-3-2-1-bang 2 points3 points ago

Fucking Tecate... every last time I accidentally grab one I think I'm grabbing a Coke.

[–]Nothingtotalkabout 2 points3 points ago

I wish I had that problem, they don't sell coke at the "The Beer Store".

[–]cumfarts 0 points1 point ago

mostly choking animals

[–]RoscoeMG 23 points24 points ago

Every time.

[–]chickwithsticks 2 points3 points ago

I had a Ninja Turtles ABCs of recycling book or something like that and it said that I should cut them open... so I do. I'm not sure what letter it was for. (A was for Acid Rain, B was for Batteries, C was for CFCs... oh the 1990s...)

[–]Rastachronic 1 point2 points ago

Ranger Rick taught me that one.

[–]matisgugle 1 point2 points ago

Likewise. Hi 5

[–]mrreggaeambassador 0 points1 point ago

if you cut them in a zig zag pattern, the whole thing just turns into one long strip, making it easier for you and eliminating the possibility of anything getting stuck in it

[–]grungefan 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't that make the plastic easier for animals to eat and choke on then?

[–]alkapwnee 0 points1 point ago

It is biodegradable now...I mean it is a good habit, I did the same thing, but biodegradable rings are standard now. From the top comment on this poist, you can read about it. Though I am all for eco conscious actions :)

[–]opeth10657 25 points26 points ago

The rare cello turtle.

[–]Peachy88 34 points35 points ago

I was trying to think of something witty, but as an animal lover this picture just made me too sad.

Edit: changed liver to lover

[–]Peachy88 7 points8 points ago

Thanks, was using swype on my phone and didn't see that.

[–]Willzay 3 points4 points ago

I would of thought it bust out of it over time with its robust shell n' all, genuinely surprised.

It's like a Turtle Corset!

Poor little bugger :(

[–]FancySkunk 12 points13 points ago

These 6-pack holders are made in such a way now that after about one month exposed to UV rays, they become brittle enough to break apart on their own with only a very minor outside force.

[–]HeatherMarMal 4 points5 points ago

I still cut them. One month stuck in one of those before it breaks down probably isn't very fun.

[–]FancySkunk 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, you are still supposed to cut them, but the break down process is meant to be a safeguard against those who do not.

[–]HeatherMarMal 0 points1 point ago

I never knew about that. Makes me very happy :)

[–]pomegranati 1 point2 points ago

how much UV exposure will it have underwater?

[–]Polliwog39 2 points3 points ago

I still cut those plastic rings. I make a habit of it.

[–]Potater757 2 points3 points ago

[–]Roshane 2 points3 points ago

Hahaha I love the blatant lie in the first post, "my friend found this." Photo taken in 1993...

[–]dangerousbrian 13 points14 points ago

No fucking way a thin piece of plastic like that would inhibit the growth of a turtles shell. They grow so slowly it must have been on there for years and I think it would have broken a long time before it would have deformed the shell. If it was a piece of steel wire then sure this would happen. Also there is no deformation or stretching of the plastic which would happen if it was under tension for the best part of a decade.

Corsets for turtles... Who'd a thunk it?

[–]MattyDred1 1 point2 points ago

Wouldn't a shell be too hard to squish like this?

[–]Krickette 1 point2 points ago

I had a turtle shaped like that. We found her when I was little, she had a ring around her. We cut it off of her but she stayed hourglass shaped. We named her Myrtle the girdled turtle. I wish I had a picture but it was so long ago, I was too young to care about that sort of thing.

[–]Spacetime_Music_Ride 1 point2 points ago

Check out that hourglass figure!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

That's what the little bastard gets from drinking all my beer.

[–]JimmyJackin 1 point2 points ago

[–]Whatthe45 1 point2 points ago

To be honest, I'd keep that turtle as a pet

[–]eggbean 2 points3 points ago

This is a fresh water terrapin though.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I understand that this happens often but I don't understand this picture. If you look at the loop that is supposedly causing this problem it is broken. Did someone pull it off and then place the broken loop back on the turtle to illustrate what happened? Or is this turtle misshapen from something else and someone just placed the ring on it to take this pic?

Take a closer look at the ring, it does not fit, is not tight on the turtle and is not connected.

[–]o0evillusion0o 2 points3 points ago

Pretty cool! think I'll buy a baby turtle and grow it into cool shapes like this. Thanks for showing me that this can be done!

[–]Whitentaco 4 points5 points ago

I don't buy things like these, I buy plastic 1 liter bottles and continually re-use them.

Mostly for drinking water.

[–]spaceship 17 points18 points ago

You think that's sustainable? I go outside when it rains, open my mouth, and look up!

[–]Whitentaco 3 points4 points ago

I'm in Indiana ( southern ) It hasn't rained in a couple weeks here. Are you stealing my rain so you can have fresh drinking water?

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 0 points1 point ago

It is raining now. I think you guilted him into giving the rain back.

[–]jxdjxd 2 points3 points ago

Careful it doesn't rain in your nose and you drown.

[–]spaceship 7 points8 points ago

I'm so minimalist I got rid of my nose years ago. Why have two ways of breathing if one works just fine?

[–]jxdjxd 1 point2 points ago

I always liked the idea of having a backup.

Mouth goes to left lung, nose goes to right lung. Took a lot of practice.

[–]TheHotpants 4 points5 points ago

That's why I wear floaties.

[–]mojomonkeyfish 1 point2 points ago

You shouldn't be drinking the rain! The ground needs that rain, so we can fill more bottles.

[–]kobachi 2 points3 points ago

Those bottles are not designed to be re-used. You're probably increasing your risk of cancer.

Man, I hate it when it turns out I believed an urban legend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuse_of_water_bottles http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/plasticbottles.asp

[–]Whitentaco 0 points1 point ago

Proof please.

[–]informationmissing 1 point2 points ago

You're still using plastic. Buy a metal or glass water bottle and fill it forever, or until it breaks. Switching one shape of plastic for another does not solve anything. Fuck one turtle, we're talking about pollution here.

[–]snecko 1 point2 points ago

But now he has two rooms.

[–]llezo 1 point2 points ago

Dem Hips.

[–]doc624 0 points1 point ago

This is sad in a way, but it's also amazing that the shell grew around the plastic.

[–]Aoladari 0 points1 point ago

[–]fintorro 0 points1 point ago

[–]musiclover55 0 points1 point ago

My mom always made me cut the loops before we threw them away. Even though go to a landfill doesn't mean an animal won't get into it. We had a duck in our backyard once. These were stuck over his bill so tight he could open up to eat or drink....we finally got him and got it off.

[–]Poboyztrack 0 points1 point ago

It's kinda cool tho.

[–]Criously 0 points1 point ago

Look at that hourglass figure...

[–]brehon1104 0 points1 point ago
