Posting Rules

Although we focus on feminism and women's issues, there are other systems of oppression which intersect in various ways. Therefore, sexism, classism, heterosexism, homophobia, anti-egalitarianism, transphobia, ablism, racism, and any other oppressive belief systems are also not allowed.

In addition, off-topic, inciteful, baiting or antagonistic content may be subject to removal. Be respectful and courteous! Feminism does not work in isolation, but rather is interconnected with all other work for justice and egalitarianism, and we believe that as injustice is addressed and overcome in society, all marginalized groups will benefit.

Discussions in this subreddit will assume the validity of feminism's existence and the necessity of its continued existence. The whys and wherefores are open for debate, but debate about the fundamental validity of feminism is off-topic and should be had elsewhere.

Please help us keep our discussion on-topic and relevant to women's issues. Discussions of sexism against men, racism, classism, ableism, and other -isms are only on-topic here if the discussion is related to how they intersect with women's issues.

If your reaction to a post about how women have it bad is "but [insert group] has it bad, too!" then it's probably something that belongs in another subreddit.

Here is an informal guide for posting:

Let X be the topic you want to discuss.

  • Is X relevant to equality for women?

  • Are you making an original post or replying to an existing thread in which X has been explicitly mentioned in an ancestor?

If you answered "yes" to both questions, then you may post.

Moderation

Moderators are here for you. Our goal is to make this a welcoming space where feminists can discuss the issues freely. We have an open door policy and invite concerns, questions, and suggestions. Please feel free to contact us with your thoughts, as moderator mail will be totally confidential. If you wish to start a meta-thread about /r/Feminism, please direct it to /r/Meta_Feminism.

Leaves all C-section babies out in the cold.

Like that one guy who killed MacBeth

[–]koxol 2 points3 points ago

Guess they used that word to adapt the phrase to the Vagina Monologues. I don't know when the phrase originated, but I had previously read it using the word uterus.

Right, Counselor. Except this is a mere sign and not a legal case in which every single alternative and/or possible inclusion or factor needs to be debated.

[–]carela -3 points-2 points ago

I think you can still argue that they at least were in there at one point

[–]Pays4Porn 7 points8 points ago

Uterus != Vagina.

[–]carela 5 points6 points ago

I'm aware, but sperm is not deposited directly into the uterus except in fucked-up Japanese porn

[–]BlueParrot 12 points13 points ago

Then again, life does not begin at ejaculation. Just saying...

[–]carela 9 points10 points ago

Tell that to the Republicans!!!!!!

[–]SkyWulf 0 points1 point ago

If it did then I'm a horrible person. So much waste...

So. Much. Win. I want to give this woman a hug and my checking account to pay her to walk around everywhere with this sign.

To the people correcting her anatomy reference: I think that vagina is better than uterus for a social protest as the word vagina and the ideas behind it are more stigmatized than uterus. People that don't have a uterus will have hardly any understanding of this and what it means to have one (uterus experience, if you will) and are subsequently more interested in people's vaginas, something that is readily visible to the human eye and can be interacted with directly by people without one. Uterus is also much less of a 'no-no' word and body part. Many of us were shamed into keeping our hands off our vaginas, but mum never said, 'Bev, take your hand out of your uterus!'

tl;dr It seems to me that vagina is more provocative, relevant to the larger problem of control over a woman's body and sex life and that is why I think vagina > uterus for her poster.

People that don't have a uterus will have hardly any understanding of [the medical fact that babies come from a uterus and not a vagina].

LOL. bois r sooo dum

YOU'RE NOT MY MOTHER!

[–]TracyMorganFreeman -4 points-3 points ago

And every sperm came from an epididymis, what's the point? Procreation is complimentary, and this person decides to make it exclusionary again?

[–]ratjea 5 points6 points ago

I would like to take this opportunity to be even more pedantic than TMF and point out that the word is "complementary." Probably. Pretty sure.

Misandry!!! MISANDRY!!!!!

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point ago

Insulting a man isn't itself misandry. Insulting a man based on them being a man would be, or denying their feelings based on being a man would be, but simply insulting someone of a particular group isn't indicative of hatred of that group.

Same goes for correcting someone, and ratjea was correct in that I used the wrong homonym/my typo implied the wrong homonym.

[–]ratjea -3 points-2 points ago

But what if I did it with misandry in my heart?

[–]TracyMorganFreeman -4 points-3 points ago

No you're right I used the wrong one.

Not sure how going for being correct is pedantic, though.

I'm pretty sure a) I am in the best position to know my intentions, b) being wrong doesn't mean I wasn't going for being correct, and c) even if I wasn't going for being correct not going for being correct doesn't necessarily mean one is pedantic.

[–]mythandry -1 points0 points ago

Fascinating.

[–]NinjasStoleMyName 0 points1 point ago

Cue to an image that have been shared and liked thousands of times on Facebook that reads: "No, you're that one that came from my ballsack".

[–]jakebluu -1 points0 points ago

I don't understand

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Fundamentalist Christians think that Eve was created from one of Adam's ribs. The Christian right in America is responsible for such congress people as Rep. Mike Callton who banned one of his fellow Congressperson from speaking on the House floor after she said the word "vagina" when discussing legislating women's reproductive rights. He went so far as to say the word was so vulgar he "wouldn't say it in mixed company." Gag. This woman and her sign were at a protest to Rep. Callton's ridiculous response to a simple anatomy word.

[–]jakebluu 6 points7 points ago

What the fuck. I didn't know politicians were this stupid.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Sickening, I know.
