When I first saw this, I thought it was towing a waterskier.

Alas, just a buoy.

[–]Xtremeskierbfs 96 points97 points ago

I think, if given the opportunity to do this off of the back of a submarine, my life's work would be complete...

[–]Allergy_Man 25 points26 points ago

This has meet-up written all over it.

How much does one of those bad boys cost? I'm sure reddit could buy a nice surplus Typhoon for a meetup. Or at least rent one.

[–]mkdz 2 points3 points ago

I found this and this.

I have no idea how accurate either of those two pages are.

Pansy little diesel electrics...

I love swearing in polish and Russian. The words seem to hold a lot more clout than in English. Also, some swears are just hilarious. For example „do huja ciężkiego", or "to the heavy dick", literally. It's just not as fulfilling in English.

[–]t_from_gdansk 3 points4 points ago

Kurwa, there's a spelling mistake there. Itc chuj, not huj.

[–]fireline12 2 points3 points ago

Хрен isn't obscene, so definitely хуй.

I'm sorry... Did, did you say Slutstation?

[–]JediCraveThis 22 points23 points ago

Just wait for the slutspurt, that's when things go crazy.

[–]ShearGenius89 10 points11 points ago

Might want to bring a poncho.

[–]DarkGamer 13 points14 points ago

It's the last stop on the train or "end station." It makes me want to visit.

Welcome to Sweden. Where Slutstation is always the final destination. (link)

[–]MestR 4 points5 points ago

Slutstation

Fuck you, now I can never unsee that.

[–]bovine3dom 9 points10 points ago

not Herp, Негр. It's pronounced "negger" - г = g

[–]feedemall 4 points5 points ago

Sorry, but would it be pronounced 'neger' or 'nyeger'? I really don't know when 'e' in Russian is a 'ye' or just an 'e'

[–]Freudenschade 2 points3 points ago

An 'e' in Russian makes a 'ye' sound when under stress. Now, discerning when a letter is stressed in Russian is a guessing game, almost.

[–]tpolm 3 points4 points ago

this is not true, this has nothing to do with stress

'e' in Russian makes a 'ye' sound when it is

  • the first letter in the word
  • the previous letter is "vowel" (а о у ы э е ё я и ю)
  • the previous letter is ъ or ь

in other cases it sounds like the English 'e' (Russian 'э') and also softens the previous consonant

for example

  • нет (no) - n'et (n is softened)
  • свет (light) - sv'et
  • европа (europe) - yevropa
  • злое (angry) - zloye

same rule applies to ё (yo/o), я (ya/a) and ю (yu/u)

[–]MrNewking 7 points8 points ago

H = N , E = E , г = g , p = R . Negr

[–]feedemall 11 points12 points ago

I know that, but 'e' is usually pronounced as 'ye' not as 'e' so if you have "Европа", it's not "evropa", it's "yevropa". A better example would be a city in Russia called Yekaterinburg, but in Russian it's written "Екатеринбу́рг".

[–]amazingbeavis 3 points4 points ago

No, its pronounced negr with n softened. Unlike when it's in the beginning of the word, e is not pronounced as ye after a consonant it just softens the sound of that consonant. For shame Russian grammar nazis, I'm not even Russian.

[–]Kx2hunter 1 point2 points ago

It's pronounced "Negr," so don't go walking around the street saying that word pretending no-one will understand you

[–]jb55 11 points12 points ago

Why is there a number 6 in that word :|

[–]AnkhOmega 11 points12 points ago

Because there isn't.

[–]sadman81 13 points14 points ago

e6atb - that's gonna be my new license plate number

[–]Fuzzykins 45 points46 points ago

Cyrillic is actually really neat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic

Edit: I realize he was being facetious, I was just stating that Cyrillic IS really neat, and that you should look into it, that's all. Don't hurt me. :<

[–]Jackstick 8 points9 points ago

Definitely Canadian.

[–]Toxyoi 6 points7 points ago

I'm learning Russian (simply because I want to) & yes, the cyrillic alphabet is pretty cool.

[–]AmericaTheHero 2 points3 points ago

I'm amazed that I found this. A couple days ago, after figuring out the career I wanted, I realized I'd need to learn a language, so I chose Russian. Right now I'm just working on pronouncing the letters so I can at least pronounce words, but I'm amazed that I randomly found someone else who is learning Russian (mainly) for fun.

[–]i_feel_rexy 107 points108 points ago

Flippin sweet. Several years ago, I was fishing on a beach on Hickam AFB on Oahu, HI. Hickam is right next to Pearl Harbor, and every ship that leaves or enters goes right past where I was fishing. Anywho, I was catching nothing at all, so I passed the time looking down by my feet, watching fish swim right past. I looked up and BAM there's a nuclear submarine, silently sailing right past me. I was standing pretty far out into the channel, about a stone's throw away from the sub. It was AWESOME.

[–]macpatrik 73 points74 points ago

This is no joke, my biggest fear ever. Heights? No problem. Spiders? Kind of awesome. Submarines moving underneath me? HELL FUCKING NO.

[–]jamesbiff 22 points23 points ago

Anything moving beneath me in water. Ever since that scene in Jaws where the dude is sitting in the little boat and you just see the massive maw of the shark coming up towards him. Fuck.

[–]LeeHarveyOswald 16 points17 points ago

Every time I go swimming in the ocean:

Mental Dialog "Well this isn't so bad. Actually pretty refreshing! I can do this so long as I try not to think ofFUCK! FUCK! JOHN WILLIAMS MUSIC! FUCK! FUCK! SHIT! FUCK!"

[–]betcheslovethis 2 points3 points ago

When I was younger my dad would take my whole family canoeing. One time he paddled us over to a small are surrounded by weeds and told us to look down. There was about an 8 or 9 foot alligator sitting only feet below our tiny, wooden canoe.

I was traumatized. Fuck anything moving below me in the water.

[–]wasabijoe 1 point2 points ago

This is the source of my bath tub fears as a child. That and Piranhas the movie. Also we had a swimming pool in the backyard, more water more fear. Even in my 40s swimming the Mediterranean, exciting and full of fear inducing deep water.

[–]Skizorbit 4 points5 points ago

Yeah this definitely freaks me out way more than it should. I can imagine it with some frighting mechanical noise and... ugh. No.

[–]bluecheese12 1 point2 points ago

I used to have nightmares about being out in the deep ocean on a small boat and seeing a massive bulge pass underneath me...

[–]vanillapep 29 points30 points ago

This sounds awesome and terrifying at the same time.

[–]TonyMatter 9 points10 points ago

As a child, I swam in a wider part of the Suez Canal. Before the warships came past, their propellors pumped the water low in front of them, so you could stand on the sand. After they'd passed, and we'd cheered, the water came back fast and high and you'd really have to run. Holy Moses.

[–]Goldmattress 13 points14 points ago

How did you know it was nuclear powered?

[–]cryptovariable 64 points65 points ago

All US submarines (with the exception of a handful of test/exploration submersibles) are nuclear-powered.

[–]lastwind 5 points6 points ago

I always wonder how come we have nuclear-powered subs but no nuclear-powered trucks.

[–]mikeash 44 points45 points ago

In case you're serious, one reason is because nuclear power only works at a large scale, and submarines are vastly larger than trucks.

[–]Farmerj0hn 63 points64 points ago

Clearly we need bigger roads.

[–]Rustiest_Venture 6 points7 points ago

Nuclear powered rail cars - now that's a good use for the power. Right up until they derail.

[–]warjunky7 9 points10 points ago

We'd call it the pain train.

[–]Kylearean 18 points19 points ago

Or, tiny nuclear submarines with wheels.

[–]CaptInappropriate 7 points8 points ago

the submarine NR-1 had wheels

fun fact: the wikipedia article lists food as the limiting endurance factor, when in fact it was usually the capacity of the sanitary tank

[–]RPLLL 5 points6 points ago

Well, I can tell you why we don't have nuclear-powered space ships: http://youtu.be/PGE-WRqgPRE

[–]ITworksGuys 6 points7 points ago

The cost to putting a nuclear reactor on any submarine is justified as it gives the submarine a practically unlimited submerge time.

Traditional submarines powered by battery are quieter but must surface often to run the diesels and charge the battery.

A typical "Boomer" can stay submerged for 3 months at a time, the sub is only hindered by the needs of the crew.

[–]richalex2010 8 points9 points ago

And larger nuclear-powered vessels like aircraft carriers are justified by the sheer scale of them. Smaller surface vessels use gas turbines or diesel.

Interestingly, in 1990 there were more nuclear reactors aboard ships than there were generating power on land.

[–]ITworksGuys 10 points11 points ago

Yeah, that is a part of it but the issue with carriers is the same with submarines.

Operational flexibility. Nuclear reactors on carriers basically mean they can go anywhere, at any speed they want, for about 20 years or so.

The carriers also make their own water so the only crimp is the food supply. Scale does come into play as making your own feed/drinking water is important.

The difference is very important here. A diesel boat captain has to constantly worry about speed, due to burning fuel, and location of his refuel.

A nuclear boat captain says fuck it and goes where he wants to go and can do it full throttle. It is a large logistical problem that is completely removed.

There were, at one time, some nuclear powered cruisers out there, but the cost vs life/service was to high and the concept was scrapped.

[–]Gone_Fission 6 points7 points ago

A surfaced sub off the coast of Hawaii would most likely be an American sub, and they are all nuclear powered.

[–]MartiPanda 8 points9 points ago

Because he grew a second head.

[–]CaptInappropriate 3 points4 points ago

I get less radiation onboard the submarine than you get on the beach or in an airplane

[–]ThaFuck 2 points3 points ago

I know they're designed to be as quiet as possible, but how silent was it?

Sounds like it was utterly so from your position.

If it were that quiet and that close, as a sub captain I would love sneaking up on people and dropping water bombs on them. Or whatever zaney shenanigans sub captains get up to in whacky machines.

[–]i_feel_rexy 2 points3 points ago

As you said, utterly quiet. Could not hear anything above the ambient noises of the environment. It's hard to describe the sense of shock I felt - it seemed to come from nowhere.

[–]jarabara 1 point2 points ago

I used to live at ewa beach, right at the mouth of the pearl harbor. we would go surfing out near the channel and watch these huge submarines and aircraft carriers come in and out of the harbor. So amazing to see these giant things slowly go by. You used to able to kayak across the channel to the other side of the harbor (my dad would do this frequently because it was easier than driving all the way around the harbor when his work was just 3 miles away). Then some guy got run over by one of the submarines so they put a stop to that.

[–]Cualax23 96 points97 points ago

Don't see why the hunt for Red October was so hard?

[–]LSky 1 point2 points ago

Central Intelligence Agency... Now, there's a contradiction in terms.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

I actually started hearing the theme song in the background the moment I opened the picture.

[–]howdareyou 8 points9 points ago

I used to drive my family nuts when I was younger. I would get in the shower and sing random Russian sounding gibberish to the tune of Hunt For Red October, as loudly as I could. I was a weird kid. Actually I still do it, just when no one is home.

[–]CaptInappropriate 5 points6 points ago

As the US Navy's Submarine Acoustic Systems Testing and Evaluation Officer, I'd love to hear your ideas.

[–]richmomz 1 point2 points ago

There it is, I found it!

[–]Interphase 1 point2 points ago

Looks like we got another boomer coming out of the barn

[–]heckarstix 29 points30 points ago

I like how not a single person seems interested in it

[–]richmomz 16 points17 points ago

Probably because it's a common sight - if you were a nuclear submarine captain with access to a high powered telescopic periscope where would be YOUR first stop out of the port, eh?

[–]scu 1 point2 points ago

On behalf of Reddit, thank you for not phrasing this in a way that ends in "was given."

[–]smacktoward 72 points73 points ago

This has to be photoshopped. If it was really a Russian beach we'd see Vladimir Putin in a Speedo wrestling a killer whale.

[–]richmomz 12 points13 points ago

He's obviously driving that sub checking out the babes through the telescopic periscope.

[–]tk421dr 67 points68 points ago

I was so busy looking for boobs that I didn't even notice the damn thing.

[–]charonsobol 10 points11 points ago

I scanned the whole beach. Russian women do not go topless apparently.

[–]richmomz 1 point2 points ago

That's what those sneaky Soviets are counting on!

[–]trgdr090 22 points23 points ago

Jesus that's a big sucker.

[–]Gone_Fission 36 points37 points ago

Looks like a typhoon class, which would make it one of the largest subs ever built.

[–]RaiausderDose 8 points9 points ago

I love this boot, was in hunt for red October, too.

[–]Gone_Fission 7 points8 points ago

It certainly looks like one in the movie, but there is a line that has always bugged me. When the silent propulsion system fails (cryogenic failure if I remember correctly), Sam Neil reports that the reactor (singular) scrams to protect itself.

The typhoon class has two reactors on board. Also, using some engineering extrapolation and my knowledge base of naval nuclear prepulsion, failure of a propulsion plant should not necessitate a reactor scram.

[–]Boston_Jason 6 points7 points ago

If steam demand (although I'm sure a breaker or 3 would trip first) shoots up real high real fast, then there is a chance that there will be an automatic scram initiated. Reactor power is a function of steam demand.

[–]CaptInappropriate 2 points3 points ago

Which breaker would trip for an oversteam demand? I assume that you're assuming the oversteam demand is due to SSTGs, not MEs or a steam leak...

[–]nalc 3 points4 points ago

Are you sure about the two reactors? In the book, having to shut down the reactor was a major plot element. I don't recall them mentioning that another reactor was available.

[–]Anonymous3891 5 points6 points ago

I think his point is the Typhoon class has two reactors, but they ignored that for the plot, regardless of book or movie.

[–]richmomz 2 points3 points ago

That is a Typhoon, and it is by far the largest sub class ever built. They basically took two Delta-class hulls and said "fuck it, we're going to weld these things together just for shits n giggles and make the biggest damn submarine ever." And they did.

[–]richmomz 1 point2 points ago

Russians don't take a dump without a plan, son.

[–]phoenixprince 39 points40 points ago

The russian remake of Jaws.

[–]AStrangelove 8 points9 points ago

A story told in the perspective of the shark and russia smacks you around for a bit with a submarine.

[–]ajayz 15 points16 points ago

Funny, this is an Akula class submarine (NATO class: Typhoon). Akula means "shark" in Russian.

[–]skillet42 15 points16 points ago

Thanks, Dr. Akula.

[–]sfurules 1 point2 points ago

You need so many more upvotes

[–]TimeForTiffin 13 points14 points ago

[–]GLaMSDOS 129 points130 points ago

looking around at people on the beach What am I looking for? I don't see anything strange here...

Took me awhile to spot the submarine ><...

[–]Langly- 65 points66 points ago

Then you'll never pass this test.

[–]wallybash 51 points52 points ago

I only counted 12, and I missed the bear. And why the hell are there so many bicycles hung up under my truck?

[–]tanskies 1 point2 points ago

I got all 13, missed the bear and didn't believe the video so I had to rewind to make sure it was actually there.

[–]WatsUpwithThat 26 points27 points ago

That sucker was practically camoflauged. That's probably a mob of pickpocketing gypsies. Also, what passes for moonwalking these days is pretty weak.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

They train you to ignore the blacks in the video then ask you if you notice them. Nothing impressive.

[–]had3l 5 points6 points ago

I passed. They told me to count the passes, not look for bears.

[–]jgzman 10 points11 points ago

Objection! I wouldn't have seen the bear even if only casually observing. The bear blends in with half the moving objects on the screen. The test isn't to see if I can pick out a hidden object, it's to see if I can observe the bloody obvious while concentrating on something else.

What is far MORE impressive is to watch a single group of players, all in colorful uniforms, passing the ball vigorously, and to have a black bear walk through the action, and have watched people swear that there was no bear. Seen it done. Was amazed.

[–]SuminderJi 3 points4 points ago

I failed.

[–]atatassault 4 points5 points ago

The test is flawed. It specifically asked you to zone in on the ball being passed by the white team. In Traffic, you should NEVER zone in on anything. Having good general awareness requires you to passively observe everything so you can quickly react to things that are a threat/aren't normal/shouldn't be there.

[–]twist3dl0gic 2 points3 points ago

The first time I stumbled across this, I counted the passes right and I saw the bear. It pissed off the person who was "testing" me because he had to watch several times to spot the bear.

This time, even though I knew what I was looking for, I somehow missed the damn thing. I have an inability to see what I'm looking for.

[–]Sleepwalks 1 point2 points ago

Same. I have a weird fear of overwhelmingly large machines, too... I've never had a problem with looking at one in a picture, but when I finally realized that was there, it really gave me a start.

[–]Stro77 1 point2 points ago

I just had to say I applaud your username.

[–]Back2BagDad 9 points10 points ago

Seems like a typical Street Fighter background for some reason.

[–]bigbabich 7 points8 points ago

I never go to the beach during Typhoon season.

[–]NoSassScooter 2 points3 points ago

Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk

[–]Osiris47 1 point2 points ago

Image of falling Typhoon class subs pelting Russian beaches is pretty scary.

[–]B1aec 1 point2 points ago

I heard they are all to be decommissioned. Who knows?

The Russian bureaucracy loves contradicting itself.

[–]I_CATS 1 point2 points ago

There was an interesting documentary about these submarines in /r/Documentaries a while back. Here is the link.

[–]C_T_C_C 1 point2 points ago

173m long! Bloody Hell!

[–]freerider 92 points93 points ago

[–]erikx213 3 points4 points ago

Thats some lifeguard they got there...

[–]redbeatles 4 points5 points ago

"And Ryan, be careful - thingsh in here don't rrreact well to bulletsh" CUE GREATEST REVEAL EVER

[–]Fuck_Onions 5 points6 points ago

I never realized how large submarines are..........

[–]poli_ticks 5 points6 points ago

The Typhoon is the biggest sub ever built.

[–]richmomz 1 point2 points ago

Well this one in particular happens to the biggest one ever made.

[–]TehPerfessor 7 points8 points ago

Me and a couple of friends went fishing off the coast of Hawaii to have an American sub surface about 50 feet away from us, oh man bricks where shat

[–]jgzman 14 points15 points ago

Bet you a dollar they did it on purpose.

[–]mikent 6 points7 points ago

they honestly probably they did. they knew the boat was there.

[–]ToucansBANG 3 points4 points ago

Were there other (big) fishing boats nearby? UK policy is to surface around fishing boats when exercising. Some time back a boat dived, taking a trawler and crew with it...

[–]lastwind 3 points4 points ago

[–]ToucansBANG 5 points6 points ago

It was a Royal Navy submarine and the incident was caused by diving caught up on nets, not surfacing under another vessel.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/submarine-crew-blamed-for-sinking-of-antares-1532324.html

[–]DirtyDenzel 2 points3 points ago

Didn't know Bill Paxton was the admiral of the USS Greeneville.

[–]theRZArecta 6 points7 points ago

I've never seen so many people not giving a fuck about a submarine

[–]Basetyp 4 points5 points ago

Wow, this picture reminds me of a sailing trip I had at school. It was near Kiel, Germany where we had our first sailing lessons when roughly 70 meters next to our boat a giant submarine turned up. The couch told us to calm down and that this would happen sometimes near his boating school because of the marine base about 5 kilometers away. Anyway I was shocked and yet pleased that I had the chance to look at that colossus of steel from close range!

[–]GeeBee72 3 points4 points ago

Comrades, our own fleet doesn't know our full potential.

They will do everything possible to test us, but they will only test their own embarrassment.

We will leave our fleet behind.

We will pass through the American patrols, pass their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city and listen to their rock 'n' roll while we conduct missile drills.

Then...

And when we are finished, the only sound they will hear is our laughter while we sail to Havana, where the sun is warm and so is the comradeship.

<<Catapillar Drive Engaged>>

[–]Skitrel 4 points5 points ago

There is a warship parked in the middle of London to defend the Olympics and Anti Aircraft missiles are on the top of a block of flats... London every day is weirder than this photo right now.

[–]Chad_Brochill_17 2 points3 points ago

Living next to a subbase, this has happened to me plenty of times before.

[–]JazzyNips 2 points3 points ago

Funny? Nope, just submarine.

[–]chimchim64 2 points3 points ago

Wow there really are submarine races!

[–]cybersquire 2 points3 points ago

Russian midshipman: [in Russian] Captain's scared them out of the water!

When I was in middle school, I went with the science club on a trip to Catalina Island. Came home telling my dad about sailors hitting golf balls off a submarine onto a floating green, and he didn't believe me! I was flabbergasted. Luckily, he came to a picture slide show at school, and he saw for himself that I was right. Never felt more vindicated, but did make me wonder if I was such a huge liar about everything else, who could blame him? Mom always said I was "imaginative."

This isn't even funny it's just fucking awesome. This would make my day if I was at a beach.

"A satellite caught Red October in Poliyarnyy Inlet this morning..."

[–]demonic87 1 point2 points ago

Took me a good 20 seconds to see that submarine.

[–]watwasthat 1 point2 points ago

Used to happen all the time if you went to the beach in Rhode Island. Subs used to surface to come into Groton Sub Base.

[–]trollmenot 1 point2 points ago

God, the "In Russia..." jokes aren't coming...They're just not coming!

[–]ActnADonkey 1 point2 points ago

If you look real hard you can see a black dude

[–]jack104 1 point2 points ago

I don't know why but I didn't notice that sub at first and when I did, I nearly jumped out of my skin.

[–]ilovealltoilets 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one that noticed the topless woman on the left?

[–]sargENT_shart 1 point2 points ago

To this day I have never seen a submarine in person, not a word of a lie, I would probably think we were under attack.

[–]erchall 1 point2 points ago

Never mind the submarine; I wish banana hammocks were more socially acceptable here in the United States.

[–]zentrout 1 point2 points ago

Even looking at a picture like this, it's very difficult for me to grasp how enormous those things are.

[–]downtowne 1 point2 points ago

Is there a waterskier behind that?

[–]richmomz 1 point2 points ago

"...and we shall sail to Havana where the sun is warm, and so is the... "comradship."

crew cheers and whistles

[–]ATpup 1 point2 points ago

[–]CoyoteStark 1 point2 points ago

[–]Tonypier 1 point2 points ago

Over a hundred Russians in this picture and not one bottle of alcho-.... oh wait, I found one.

[–]faaaaaakk 1 point2 points ago

Not a tan among them...

[–]ConsciousPilot 1 point2 points ago

"Do not be alarmed. Continue swimming naked... Oh come on! Continue!"

[–]Jaws666 1 point2 points ago

That's a Typhoon, the worlds largest submarine.

It has a swimming pool onboard. The pool is tiny, but still.

[–]ForeverAllOne 1 point2 points ago

It actually is a shoop, fucking retard.

[–]tomllm 1 point2 points ago

I saw a Russian sub on the surface while I was in Istanbul - they have to go through the Bosphorus on the surface cuz it's so damn narrow.

[–]flattop100 1 point2 points ago

"And Ryan, be careful. Some things down there...don't respond well to bullets."

[–]keepkalm 1 point2 points ago

I guess I'm used to seeing submarines. I grew up near Hood Canal in Washington State and the Subs would always need to open the bridge to go to Bangor.

Yes, submarines needed a floating bridge to open so they could pass, it's not a deep channel.

In Soviet Russia, Red October finds you!
