This video does not get enough credit: Powers of Ten

Please take the time out to watch this amazing video. If you think that all this mind blowing stuff is new, just check this out. Great video with great intelectual quality made in the 70s.

My uncle owns the rights to that :D

[–]Nakken 2 points3 points ago

According to reddit time you spent 2 hours. [5] confirmed.

[–]bonix 22 points23 points ago

Zooming around this while listening to explosions in the sky at 230am is quite an experience

[–]on_the_redpill 7 points8 points ago

Nice choice in EITS. I'm going to have to try this.

Also, have you ever listened to This Will Destroy You? They're a bit darker but awesome.

[–]Just_To_Say_Thanks 5 points6 points ago

This Will Destroy You is amazing...and Explosions as well, especially live. (I saw them on 4th of July a few years ago in Austin)
The fireworks added to the awesome.
Makes me proud of my home state. :)

[–]alexthealex 2 points3 points ago

Check The Mercury Program!

"you need a more recent version of Adobe Flash Player"

[–]Ricksauce 4 points5 points ago

Right? Jobs hated Flash. Called it "buggy."

I sure would like buggy Flash on my iPhone.

[–]Max1881 2 points3 points ago

That's wierd it works fine for me on my iPhone

[–]Flarehl 1 point2 points ago

Puffin Web Browser. Free, flash, and isnt like cloudbrowse where the layout is annoying.

[–]GaryDuder 4 points5 points ago

And I think you'll enjoy this then.

[–]sunnydaysGregory 1 point2 points ago

at an [8] i clicked this link and OH MY GODDD

[–]FrogGirl 1 point2 points ago

I can't believe how big the Minecraft world is.

[–]originaluip 1 point2 points ago

Why does this show an electron being bigger than a helium nucleus? Is that true?

[–]kautylia 2 points3 points ago

From wikipedia:

The electron has no known substructure.[2][71] Hence, it is defined or assumed to be a point particle with a point charge and no spatial extent.[10] Observation of a single electron in a Penning trap shows the upper limit of the particle's radius is 10−22 meters.[72] There is a physical constant called the "classical electron radius", with the much larger value of 2.8179×10−15 m. However, the terminology comes from a simplistic calculation that ignores the effects of quantum mechanics; in reality, the so-called classical electron radius has little to do with the true fundamental structure of the electron.

[–]RyanLikesyoface 1 point2 points ago

The fuck is a Japanese spider crab and why is it almost as big as a T-Rex?

[–]eatthischair 0 points1 point ago

OH MY GOD

[–]FartyNapkins 0 points1 point ago

Thank you, that entertained me for what seemed like hours [4]

[–]meganator23 0 points1 point ago

So if they estimate how large the universe is what is beyond it?

[–]frenchypadenchy 0 points1 point ago

what the fuck.. Japanese Spider Crab??????? Thanks for giving me nightmares.

Thank me later

[–]ricbenram 14 points15 points ago

At first, the gif wouldn't load on my phone, so I thought it was just an image of Earth with the caption "Earth"

Seemed acceptable here on r/trees.

[–]ABZR 14 points15 points ago

I kept expecting it to end with a comparison between one of the massive stars and my mother.

[–]whosBillHicks 3 points4 points ago

rofl haha that would have finished me

[–]undulate 11 points12 points ago

[–]cerealpunch 1 point2 points ago

XD [5]

[–]flypelicanfly 5 points6 points ago

Could anyone slow this down a little bit? I'd love to study it better.

[–]flypelicanfly 1 point2 points ago

Definitely was pretty awesome.

[–]Kirov666 2 points3 points ago

Lol it's awesome but it's going too fast.

[–]verydangerousasp 5 points6 points ago

Guys, get ready for mind_blown.exe v2.0. About that last, largest star, VY Canis Majoris:

"If the Earth were to be represented by a sphere one centimeter in diameter, the Sun would be represented as a sphere with a diameter of a little over a meter, at a distance of 117 meters. At these scales, VY Canis Majoris would have a diameter of approximately 2.3 kilometers (1.43 mi.), assuming the upper limit estimate of its radius."

AND YET... despite being so much larger than our sun in volume, it really isn't with regards to mass. The VY Canis Majoris has only ~30x as much mass as our sun.

[–]Lost4468 3 points4 points ago

Here's another one.

The largest star you seen, VY Canis Majoris would be less than 0.2 or a 5th of a pixel on the following.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b2/Eagle_nebula_pillars.jpg

And that compared to the andromeda galaxy (didn't think it'd be fair to use the milky way given we don't have actual photos from outside looking in). On the following the above image (pillars of creation) would be less than 1 tenth of a pixel.

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0905/m31_gendler_big.jpg

And that galaxy can be seen next to the largest known galaxy on the following (it's the second one).

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J1fuHULdoc8/TzT6IuLLlRI/AAAAAAAAIfA/1u6MrgRCGM8/s1600/galaxia+IC+1011.jpg

And that would be less than 0.2 pixels on the following, we don't know of anything bigger than the following obviously.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/8_Observable_Universe_%28ELitU%29.png

Most of those pics are very high resolution, click to zoom in.

[–]UnholyDemigod 1 point2 points ago

Here's another fun fact. If VY Canis Majoris was placed at the same location of our sun, its surface would extend beyond the surface of Saturn. The Sun has a radius 110 times the size of Earth. VY has a radius 2,000 times the size of the sun.

[–]AlecTheGreat94 6 points7 points ago

I kept saying to myself "There is no way there's something bigger than THAT!"

[–]Lost4468 3 points4 points ago

[–]viktorb 4 points5 points ago

VY Canis Majoris, followed by your mom.

[–]clakstin 1 point2 points ago

I guess I wasn't the only one disappointed when I didn't see this :P

[–]killzone259 7 points8 points ago

9/10

[–]messah 1 point2 points ago

Yes, yes yes!!! I've been looking for this for sooo long, came here hoping for the best, and as always reddit delievers.

[–]TXKush01 7 points8 points ago

i fucking love space.

[–]bejz 3 points4 points ago

I didn't know that URANUS is so big!

[–]eagleapex 8 points9 points ago

You are made of dust formed in the center of those stars.

[–]Fiercekiller 12 points13 points ago

Heavy elements (heavier than iron) are formed during a supernova. So we are formed from atomic collisions from star explosions.

[–]Wawski 1 point2 points ago

We're nothing more than echoes of supernovas

[–]UnholyDemigod 1 point2 points ago

I like to say it like this:

A star had to die for you to live

[–]Chick3nNippl3s 6 points7 points ago

Stars are the real Jesus.

[–]Hornetsmakehoney 2 points3 points ago

HOW can we not see something that big

[–]ThaBomb 6 points7 points ago

One of my favorite details to consider. Even though those stars are so large, and so bright, they are still too far away to see in the night sky.

[–]HighSorcerer 2 points3 points ago

That's only because of light pollution. Move out to the country, you'll see all kinds of shit in the sky.

[–]basshead37 2 points3 points ago

Because as unimaginably big as those stars are compared to us, they're absolutely nothing in comparison to the grand size of space as a whole. The human brain can't comprehend objects on that scale, we aren't even close to understanding how stuff like this is possible. There is seemingly no limit to how large or small things in our universe can get. It kind of makes my petty day to day problems seem irrelevant and makes me just happy to be alive.

[–]DirtySketel 1 point2 points ago

Because the largest star in that group is almost 30000000000000000 miles away.

When we look at that star, we're seeing it as it was thousands of years ago. Space doesn't seem to care about making its scale easily digestible for humans — humans have evolved to understand only medium sized things that you might find on the Earth.

[–]merlore 2 points3 points ago

I'm so small...

[–]mayhem45 2 points3 points ago

I was waiting for "Your Mom" at the end.

[–]HighSorcerer 2 points3 points ago

I don't know why this is a gif when it was a perfectly fine jpeg months ago.

[–]B2Dirty 2 points3 points ago

[–]BringerOfPaine 2 points3 points ago

Don't you think this post is a bit too sirius for r/trees?

[–]Henman84 5 points6 points ago

That blew my mind so bad i almost cried. no joke.

[–]jackp0t08 1 point2 points ago

Just to think, if we had a star exponentially larger than our sun, WE COULD GROW SOME HUGE BUDS

[–]actionaaron 2 points3 points ago

We would also burn to ash very quickly.

[–]sagmuffin 1 point2 points ago

ITS...TOO...FAST!AHHHHH!

[–]undersquirl 1 point2 points ago

I know this, but every time i see it my mind is blown, i forget all my problems for a second and just think of the universe.

[–]Sir_Jeremiah 1 point2 points ago

I feel like I could fathom this better if I was high.

[–]Volbeatsking 1 point2 points ago

Gotta love science!

[–]Boruski 1 point2 points ago

you guys will love this video than .

[–]iLizard 1 point2 points ago

Man I wasn't expecting my mind to get blown like that. Can't really handle it right now. [0]

[–]Fgame 1 point2 points ago

Somebody missed an opportunity for the best 'yo momma' joke ever.

[–]r1c3ball 1 point2 points ago

We truly live in a remarkable universe don't we?

[–]wisewizard 1 point2 points ago

less than a speck of nothing......think i'll go lord it over some ants to make myself feel significant.

[–]soc4real 1 point2 points ago

Original Give them a little bit credit. :)

[–]cumfarts 1 point2 points ago

Betelgeuse betelgeuse betelgeuse

[–]gmikeygdizzle 1 point2 points ago

Didn't realize it was a gif at first, but I didn't put it past r/trees to be fascinated with a picture of the earth

[–]MrBustnuts 1 point2 points ago

It amazes the fuck out if me that there are stars easily 100 times the size of our entire solar system. Hell they're probably even bigger than that, but I'm no astronomer.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Who's not a fan of getting their mind blown??

[–]SpunkingCorgi 1 point2 points ago

I never felt smaller 0_o

[–]yose21 1 point2 points ago

This amazes me, we are so big yet so small, we really take things for granted. Thank you for this post.

[–]Enti_San 1 point2 points ago

I am completely blown away, here goes the infinitely large.

[–]magicalbeautifulkibi 1 point2 points ago

It's fitting that the largest known star roughly translates as "Big dog".

[–]rafads 1 point2 points ago

I was expecting to see "your mom" at the end, silly me haha

[–]monkeymasher 1 point2 points ago

Uranus is quite large compared to the rest

[–]p1415926 1 point2 points ago

Still not bigger than your mom.

[–]kebbz[!] 3 points4 points ago

[–]Septem 1 point2 points ago

daaam gurrl, uranus is really big adolescent laugh

[–]Justinian2011 0 points1 point ago

Fuck dude this is an amazing gif to illustrate just how freaking tiny we are. A+ Thanks for the brain stimulation :)

[–]perfectconfusion -1 points0 points ago

Are you sirius?.... I'll leave now.

[–]emceeescher 0 points1 point ago

I don't know if I'm in awe or nauseated or what.

[–]Beaumont21 0 points1 point ago

I stopped recognizing names after Rigel

[–]eatthischair 0 points1 point ago

It would've been better if toward the end the starts came out 4x as fast. Just to stir things up, and blow everything

[–]ZappyKins 0 points1 point ago

Too much time on the internet. I was expecting 'your mom's butt' at the end.

[–]GaryDuder 0 points1 point ago

Damn Sirius be bein bright than a mother fucker.

Could you imagine living on jupiter? It would take like a fuckin month to cross the planet.

[–]alexsaurrr 0 points1 point ago

Wait.... I didn't know there were more planets past Planet X............ I don't think it exists.....

[–]ireland123 0 points1 point ago

Woah, what was all that stuff after the sun? Never heard of any of it!

[–]hey_gang 0 points1 point ago

I love how perfect the laws of physics are, that the same principles hold across such vastly different scales. And that space is big enough for each of these stars to have room to do their thing.

[–]Hazaa1 0 points1 point ago

I'm confused, it says sun twice? which sun is the first one then?

[–]octodat 0 points1 point ago

Motherfucking Canis Majoris. Fucking massive piece of glowing stuff. Awesome.

[–]Hrynkat 0 points1 point ago

How come I always thought Mars was bigger than earth? TIL....

[–]fulham 0 points1 point ago

Uranus is pale blue.

[–]OnlyAMuffin 0 points1 point ago

I much prefer this gif with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann at the end. It makes me feel a little bit better about being so small.

Edit - this one!

[–]torbot 0 points1 point ago

I feel so small and insignificant right now.

[–]Flarehl 0 points1 point ago

Whats with "sun" and "our sun"? Last time I checked there was only one. Am I missing something?

[–]EpicToastable 0 points1 point ago

It makes me feel short, for a stormtrooper.

[–]Malicious78 0 points1 point ago

Total perspective is dangerous. In fact, It'll drive you crazy :)

Space stuff always blows my mind

[–]jtv13 0 points1 point ago

[–]brittator 0 points1 point ago

I feel so...small.

[–]skullmonkey420 0 points1 point ago

i remember watching a show called "how the universe works" a few months back on netflix. i remember them talking about how small earth really is. (basically a better version of what OP put up here) i remember thinking, "so im like, not even a spec of dust?"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Wow, we are almost nothing, damn.

[–]KarmaAddict123 0 points1 point ago

You should put this in r/spaceporn or r/space.

[–]James007anr 0 points1 point ago

Wow!!

[–]henryponco 0 points1 point ago

Any idea why so many stars have "Cephei" in their name?

[–]JimmyJon12 0 points1 point ago

so superman lives under pollux, or alderbernam?

[–]ganjsta 0 points1 point ago

yes. so next time you have a problem, just remember how much nothing you are.

[–]kylelalala 0 points1 point ago

Blew my mind in the first frame.

[–]dinodann 0 points1 point ago

This post officially consumed more of my time than any other previous post. Thank you. Thank you everyone.

[–]pedropara 0 points1 point ago

yo my mind is full of fuck space is big as shit like, fucking big maybe, the fabric of space is in itself an ideal gas, and everything other then space is just matter inside the ideal gas but ideal gasses can't exist. an ideal gas has absolutely no attractions or relations between molecules. But everything is attracted to something and everything is related to something else. so space isn't a vacuum,it's just a really spread out gas that has close to 0 density, weight, and mass. so space must have a certain volume, but it's always expanding, so that certain volume will keep getting more and more stretched out. what happens then? and since the fabric of space isn't an ideal gas, it can't take up everything. so there are other near-ideal gases out there, fabrics of different spaces. if all of them (most likely an infinite amount) are expanding, at some point they will all have the same density and merge. and then what? it would cover everything. everything would be taken up by this infinitely huge gas. and then what? tl;dr shit man space is big. i have this bigass theory as to why. i am pretty baked. i love Dr.Pepper.

[–]rhettit 0 points1 point ago

I wish i could uptoke this more.

that last panel with VY canis majoris vs our sun just made me feel anxious. incredible.

[–]Scuttlebuttz93 0 points1 point ago

[–]zachm90 0 points1 point ago

It's impossible to even imagine just how big some of those largest stars are. Great post.
