If you look closely you will see its a ucc church (united church of Christ) my gay father just retired as a pastor from his ucc church. They welcome everyone (open and affirming). Probably the least religious church I have ever attended. Pretty normal sign for them.

Congregational Churches have a long history of laissez-faire, and of reaching out to other faiths, including Jewish People (every Synagogue I've attended had a partnership with a Congregational Church) and Wiccans and Muslims. Going by my experience, they're pretty awesome... even if I could never be part of their religion because of the whole not-believing-in-the-divinity-of-Jesus thing.

[–]mgraunk 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My parents go to a UCC church, and I went with them until I went to college. Really helps put forward the better side of religion, in my opinion. I've done a fair amount of volunteering through that church. They're not too preachy most of the time, either (except on Sunday mornings, of course).

My wife's aunt is a Congregational minister. She performed our wedding ceremony for us, which was completely secular. It was a beautiful service. One of the few churches I wouldn't have a problem attending.

Someone was asking me why I felt so strongly about my denomination being the "right" denomination today. Of course I said that there isn't a "right" denomination - that isn't how it works. But in my mind I thought, "because every time a good church pops up on /r/atheism it's a UCC church. Every. single. time."

[–]IfThisNameIsTaken 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey I'm a member of the UCC. See not all denominations are as bad as some make it seem on here.

I wouldn't consider soldiers to be living freely. They are more sacrificing themselves to assure freedom of others.

[–]linux_add 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

WBC doesn't just picket soldier's funerals, but those seem to get the most coverage.

[–]holy_holy_holy 0 points1 point ago

Yes, I cant begin to tell you how absolutely fucking free that the Iraq war made me. Our freedom was in real jeopardy there.

[–]yes_thats_right 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree completely that soldiers are not living freely. I very much disagree that they are ensuring others have freedoms. They fight to be able to enforce the policy of their government which sometimes is pro-freedom, sometimes oppressive, sometimes commercial etc.

Honestly, WBC isn't even lying. The god of the bible REALLY hates gays. Anyone who reads and believes in the bible would have no problem understanding this.

I make this point all the time but if the bible is really true, then the fundies get credit for doing it right...or trying at least.

Being a sort of biblical moderate just invalidates your entire reasoning for supporting the infallibility of the bible as a source of authority in the first place.

[–]holy_holy_holy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure why youre being downvoted, both the old and new testament speak multiple times against the "evils" of homosexuality. I swear, sometimes r/atheism faps so much over Christ and moderate christians at this may as well be r/christianity.

[–]BilllyMayes -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even /r/atheism disagrees with you... This is the second time I have seen you trying to argue fundies are actually "better" than other Christians.

Yes, fundies are more predictable. Well, not really though, because of the contradictions in the bible. So no, fundies are not more predictable. If anything, they are less predictable because they will quote one verse for something, then a day later quote another verse that contradicts the first one.

Your opinion is terrible, and I'm not sure if you are just trying to troll or what.

Oh, your RES tag is now LOVESFUNDIES

[–]Negro_Napoleon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, any christian who disagrees with WBC is just a christian who hasn't read their bible.

[–]BilllyMayes 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And has half a conscious. Even WBC doesn't want everyone to agree with them (read that in an AMA).

[–]Dustn323 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem with that comment, is that Man wrote the bible. It WAS a bunch of scriptures, unbound by a cover. The church then took those scriptures and put them together under one book. They took the stories that fit their beliefs best. If god does somehow really exist, then there is no doubt in my mind that that the bible probably leaves out some of his word, and in turn, also includes some ramblings of some bat-shit-crazy old guys.... just sayin'

[–]Negro_Napoleon 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But its ultimately not my problem as i'm not the one who believes it, they are.

They're responsible for reconciling the holes in their faith/logic...not me.

They claim the bible is relevant...not me.

[–]Dustn323 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, totally. Their version of god and total belief in the bible is skewed. I simply wanted to point out that there are Catholics who tend to focus on the more consistent themes of love an acceptance in the bible. Any intelligent Catholic will see the bible as a foundation of moral code. (Of course the argument will be made that one: there are some terrible morals in the bible. AND two: men and women have moral fiber without the bible) It is this interpretation of the bible that allows many churches to focus on the teachings of love and acceptance. Sure there is much hate in the bible, but most ceremonies do not focus on any of this. I guess my point is, because the bible is for interpretation and learning, there are MANY gods of the bible...

[–]Negro_Napoleon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If we're going to liberally interpret the bible, then one could easily conclude that the god of the bible doesn't exist but that a six day creation was still reasonable.

[–]holy_holy_holy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So if the moral code can be modified to fit with current times, it really isnt relevant at all any longer since it just mirrors contemporary society.

[–]Dustn323 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not true. It's like any book. If a book is to stand the test of time, its themes must be able to be relateable to each generation that will pick that book up. It is why our grade school teachers encouraged us to read books from generations ago. The themes in the book have always been of love and acceptance. It is the society that changes around this set of morals. There are holes in these themes, found in certain scriptures, but overall, the theme is good. The people who misinterpret the book are the ones doing wrong. You can't condemn the teachings of Jesus for being ahead of their time. You can only fault people for taking so long to catch up and really understand. This is why we are seeing two groups of church goers: Churches like the WBC who are blinded by their own ignorance so much so that they are not taking the time to really anylize the right scriptures in the book; and churches who hang rainbow flags from their steeples. I am not a believer. I think its just a shame that there is a new prejudice rising. One against a good group of people who believe in helping their communities, and spreading love, because they have a few bad (really bad) seeds. It's just unfortunate that these really bad seeds are the ones who seem to have the most influence. That influence must be eradicated, not the religion. (Sorry, went off on a tangent, just felt like expressing my feelings here. Thanks for listening)

Congregationalism is extremely open and accepting. I used to go to a congregationalist church and we had an openly gay pastor. You can be of any race, sexuality, or faith and still attend and participate in all church events.

As long as you dont have sex outside of marriage or with members of the same sex, get drunk, steal, experince greed, or speak ill of others. Because if you do, you will go to hell.
