I saw this happen once. It was an old man carrying a bag of melons. As soon as he stepped on the escalator, he lost his balance and fell backwards. I bolted over and managed to get my hand behind his head before it hit the metal stair. I rode up the escalator with him while he held on to my arm. I kept saying "you're all right, nothing to worry about" while his wife stood at the top of the escalator with her hands over her mouth.

Longest escalator ride of my life. Theirs too, I'm sure.
