Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

For the exceptionally lazy: Their eyes and mouths are actually upside down in the original shot.

You can't tell because of something called the Thatcher effect, where your brain's innate tendency to perceive faces prevents you from noticing the upside-down orientation of the features. Nobody is quite sure why this happens.

You can sorta tell. When I first opened the image I had to double take because for a second I thought their heads were upside down (with respect to their bodies) until I confirmed that eyes/nose/lips were in proper positions.

Either that or reading reddit when i should be sleeping is making me a bit batty.

EDIT: Probably I initially looked at one of the woman's lips, which of the flipped features is the one most visible especially now that I consciously know they have been flipped.

As long as you are touching the screen, the iPad and iPhone will maintain their current screen orientation, regardless of the position sensors. Basically, just open the photo and touch the screen with one finger to temporarily lock the orientation in place while using your other hand to rotate the device.

Mouth and eyes are upside down, which is why we see them as pretty but when u turn them around the eyes and mouth don't look natural because they are upside down.

We did this in my physics class. Everyone took pictures, and being the Teachers Assistant, I had to photoshop them all to look like that. We hung them all over the classroom. Ours weren't nearly as well done though.

Wow...you mean the Thatcher Effect is based in this idea that something that's upside down looks different than when it's turned right side up?

I mean...I realize it's supposed to be some statement on how society views beauty but any kind of image that's manipulated or turned upside down and then manipulated (or even non manipulated) is going to appear odd or skewed.

Doesn't really seem like it should have it's own name. Just call it what it is: photo manipulation that affects the way an image is perceived.

No, the Thatcher effect is that we perceive these abnormal pictures as normal when they're upside down. The special thing is that is DOESN'T appear odd or skewed when it's upside down (though to be fair, I noticed the eyes of the lady on the left and the lips of the lady on the right were a little off, but the rest was normal seeming).

My guess as to why it happens is that our brain attempts to flip the upside down picture so we can perceive it correctly. It them identifies the eyes and lips as already correctly oriented and doesn't flip them, so we get a normal image. However, when the image is right-side up, we aren't oriented to flip the image, so the eyes and lips just look upside down. Just a guess, though.

our brain is very specialized at seeing differences in faces, that's how we can tell people apart. there is on going research as to how our brains does it, because it is very very hard for computer vision to tell faces apart.

we are so specialized that we can't tell faces apart if they are upside down. faces have to be right side up for people to remember/understand faces.

this implies that our brain has a basic template for faces that we use to 'fit' faces into our memory better. This image, i think suggest that we also have templates for eyes, nose, and mouth, as well as relative distances of facial features. we don't notice the upside down-ness of eyes and mouth(relative to face) because our templates of them 'fit' great into our memory, but we have trouble remember the whole face still because it's upside down overall.
