Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Saddest thing i've ever read.

[–]Thepunk28 125 points126 points ago

This really made me question the amount of time I spend gaming, rather than making me have pride in being a gamer...

[–]Ibutsu 21 points22 points ago

Why would you have pride to begin with?

[–]Thepunk28 16 points17 points ago

I meant the post's tone was supposed to be inspiring, and prideful. "I don't need a life. I am a gamer! I chose to have many lives!" I didn't mean I pride myself on my video games.

I simply meant it had the opposite effect that the OP intended. It made me feel uninspired and made me think about how much time I've been spending on video games.

[–]ed4649 6 points7 points ago

Maybe this old Playstation commercial will suit you better?

[–]Thepunk28 4 points5 points ago

That was a really cool commercial. I've never seen it before.

[–]BoonTobias 13 points14 points ago

Time enjoyed is not time wasted

-Ancient chinese proverb

[–]TheMunch 1 point2 points ago

Still, you could get more enjoyment out of other things. Playing video games might be somewhat enjoyable, but that doesn't mean you should do it excessively and disregard other aspects of life.

[–]Cendeu 0 points1 point ago

Even still, there are some people who enjoy it more than anything. There are people who do nothing but fish all of the time. People who wood craft their entire life, people who do nothing but cook.

And there are people who find enjoyment in video games. I personally can't think of anything that's more fun than games, really. I'm still interested in actually having a life (job, family, and all) but any free time I ever have will most likely be spent on games. Not only that, the job I have will most likely involve games.

It depends what the person enjoys.

[–]TheMunch 0 points1 point ago

I mean,I love playing games too, I do it all the time, but I believe some of your free time could be spent better. People who play excessive amount might find other activities that they enjoy more

[–]Cendeu 0 points1 point ago

Just curious, like what?

They've probably tried other things...

[–]eljacko 0 points1 point ago

Why should they feel that they have to? Why is gaming not somehow worthy enough to be a full-time hobby?

[–]TheMunch 0 points1 point ago

Nothing is worthy to be a full-time hobby. Spending time only playing games would make your life somewhat hollow. It might just be me, but if I could take every hour spend on playing games back, I would. Playing games is fun but in the end, I don't think it is time well spend, I would rather explore other things and pursue more fulfilling things. If you spend all your time playing games, you might lose the opportunity to find something that would make you happier.

[–]PrimeIntellect 2 points3 points ago

That is an absolutely awful quote that in no way works in the real world

[–]tuscanspeed 2 points3 points ago

I wonder if a Nascar logo does that to a pit mechanic?

[–]bookObanana 2 points3 points ago

I had the sort of same Groan experience with This post

[–]DrPhilly 1 point2 points ago

It didn't start out well, considering something that he definitely did NOT learn from LoZ was the past tense of "teach".

[–]bultonic 83 points84 points ago

It is sad because it enforces the idea that not only does being a gamer mean devoting your life to video games, but also a sense of pride in devoting your life to these video games. Instead, it is healthy to treat them as recreational fun, nothing more, that you do enjoy in your free time. I enjoy the Assassin's Creed games. I enjoy playing as those characters to do things I could never do in real life. I do not think of them as an extension because I enjoy my life, have fun with it without video games as well, and understand the difference between my only life which I want to enjoy and a highly limited video game which I use to somewhat increase my enjoyment of this life.

TL;DR: Video games are a fun part of a healthy gamer's life, not their life.

[–]dispenserhere 19 points20 points ago

Absolutely. Couldn't have put it better myself. I love losing myself in the characters and their stories, but i've got my own story to play.

[–]Arcon1337 3 points4 points ago

What about pro-gamers?

[–]bultonic 7 points8 points ago

Letting your job consume your life is unhealthy.

[–]onicV 0 points1 point ago

The biggest assholes I've ever met in my life have been pro gamers. Seriously, I've never met even close to as big assholes as those guys, and they didn't even seem to fucking enjoy their game. Or their life, considering their assholishness.

[–]deepit6431 5 points6 points ago

There's nothing wrong with games being your life either though. If video games are my passion and I choose to spend most of my time playing them, it doesn't make my life any less enjoyable than yours.

[–]bultonic 10 points11 points ago

Nothing wrong inherently, but it isn't very healthy to try to live your life through a video game. I didn't say it was immoral, I just said the healthy way to treat video games in my opinion. You have to admit, considering your Black Ops character your own life that you are living is a bit of a red flag. That being said, you do raise a valid point.

[–]deepit6431 2 points3 points ago

Not living life through them, just that there's nothing wrong if video games are among your top priorities in life.

Also, black ops is the worst sort of example for this thing. :-P

[–]bultonic 1 point2 points ago

I know, that's why I chose it. OP included it, so I can totally spin that any way I want to in order to seem right.

But I do agree with what you are saying to a certain extent.

[–]Anon4Mudkips 3 points4 points ago

What if one devoted their lives to coin/stamp collecting? A hobby people can spend thousands of dollars on that does absolutely nothing but interest them?

If I choose to devote the majority of my time to doing something I might as well pick something I like rather than something someone else deems is an acceptable hobby.

[–]bultonic 2 points3 points ago

But the difference here is you are using your life to enjoy that. If you are truly seeing the lives you play in video games as your own life, that is a warning sign for social issues. You can't get everything you need out of life from a video game. I am not trying to say devoting a lot of time towards video games is wrong, I don't know how you got that idea.

[–]Anon4Mudkips 1 point2 points ago

Okay I think this was just a misunderstanding. I thought you were using a sorta holier than thou attitude toward hobbies. The fact is gaming is an escape rather than recreation for people which is pretty bad. I dont think OP's identity is being confused by video games but seriously dudes if your life and your characters are becoming muddled get help.

[–]Cendeu 0 points1 point ago

I got that idea up above, but I read down here and get what you mean. But I have a question.

I personally am completely devoted to video games. I want to spend my entire life surrounded by them. My dream job is becoming a game dev, or maybe a composer of music for games. I have no hobbies except playing games.

I get that that's cool and all (there are other hobbies people feel the same way about), but I don't get what you mean by "If you are truly seeing the lives you play in video games as your own life..."

Isn't that the point of games nowadays? To become immersed in them? I mean, developers specifically try to get you immersed into games. Amnesia, Limbo, Bastion... all are emotional because they immerse you into the worlds.

Am I "wrong" to cry when I finish Journey? Honestly, if you aren't touched in some way by that game, I think you have a problem (not you personally, "you" in general).

Er... anyway, my question is what do you mean by "lives of the video games as your own life"?

[–]bultonic 0 points1 point ago

I think the difference between people like you and I and someone I am discussing is that we may have video games as a focus, but we realize they are video games. Your life should be lived in a way you want to live it, but actually choosing to give up the life you are living to see yourself as Ezio is really unhealthy. You and I have video games, but we have family, friends, and some other interests I hope. It is the same as a tuba player letting his entire identity get wrapped up in the tuba, or a football player being completely being defined by his yards per carry. I guess my point is that enjoying and playing video games frequently isn't bad, but we have to be able to have some balance in our lives in some way.

That's my take on it at least. On another note, somebody is a pretty big fan of indy games, huh?

[–]BefuddledSeven8 0 points1 point ago

this! So long as I do some physical activity and try to get out and socialize every so often then gaming is just what I do instead of watching TV. Some people find themselves immersed in HBO series while I like to shoot shit and yell call outs with my buddies

[–]KKonMe 22 points23 points ago

[–]olommon 1 point2 points ago

What's also sad is the shoulder length....I mean god damn.

[–]zombays 0 points1 point ago

So, so sad. Oh well, back to playing CS:S with more than 400+ hours. I don't feel bad though, I started back in 09, and leave it on a lot of times.

[–]PyromaniacalSalesman 5 points6 points ago

Pfff, 400+ hours.

More like, back to play Tf2 with 1380+ hours.

(bragbrag)

[–]DaTScientisT 0 points1 point ago

Then you actually don't enjoy video games and are just looking for something to fill your time.

[–]midasMIRV 0 points1 point ago

It was because the legs were from the cover of Modern Warfare 3, wasn't it?

[–]cacarter1984 204 points205 points ago

i love video games. but this is just lame.

[–]GeorgeTaylorG 16 points17 points ago

Too late, it's already on my tumblr.

[–]Real-Life-Reddit -2 points-1 points ago

Tumblr?

GET HIM!!

[–]GeorgeTaylorG 7 points8 points ago

Easy man, I was only making a funny.

[–]Real-Life-Reddit -2 points-1 points ago

Ohh, a wise guy huh. Well i'll tell ya what we do with wise guys around here...

[–]Homeschooled316 4 points5 points ago

Fun fact: This was on 9gag yesterday. It's a repost of something from 9gag that is a repost of something from reddit months ago which is a repost of yet another thing on reddit a few weeks before that without the text layered over it.

[–]MrNoodleman 69 points70 points ago

Btw legs are backwards

[–]Venderpa 52 points53 points ago

He wouldn't know since he didn't make it, just posted for karma...

[–]Battletooth 23 points24 points ago

Ah. Someone shared something that the community enjoyed and he got karma for it. He is such a bad person because he showed people something they enjoyed enough to upvote.

[–]GatticusFinch 9 points10 points ago

I choose to have many legs.

[–]learntoplay 122 points123 points ago

So fucking lame.

[–]sdk2g 4 points5 points ago

Just when I actually though /r/gaming couldn't get any worse. I actually felt bad for playing games when I looked at this image.

[–]blubase 15 points16 points ago

i choose the words video game enthusiast. i feel like the word "gamer" makes it sound like i have no life.

[–]wasniahC 4 points5 points ago

The word "gamer" has nothing but negative connotations to me. I don't get all the "I'm a real girl gamer" posts etc; is that a good thing? When I hear "gamer", I think of people who want attention for the fact that they play games.. and the CoD demographic.

[–]deepit6431 0 points1 point ago

That is a horrible generalisation. I'm a gamer. I have a life.

[–]trustedsource 0 points1 point ago

I think the word "enthusiast" has been used to describe people with no life for almost a hundred years.

[–]blubase 0 points1 point ago

well i guess i did use a generalization with "video game enthusiast". for me it's a bit of particularly PC games. it starts with me having a massive enthusiasm for building "video game enthusiast" computers, which drifts into me playing PC video games constantly. i really don't know a word for playing video games constantly to test PCs, so video game enthusiast works best

[–]ganjcity 42 points43 points ago

This doesn't make me feel better about giving my life away to videogames..

[–]zepp3lin 8 points9 points ago

Real life doesn't matter any more than video games.

1000 years from now nobody will even know you existed so play up my friend.

[–]GatticusFinch 4 points5 points ago

Ancient Mayan bros playing that ball through a sideways hole game--"1000 years from now our civilization will probably not exist so knock that ball through that sideways hole all day my friend."

[–]Gooberpatrol66 3 points4 points ago

Weren't the losers of that game executed?

[–]GatticusFinch 1 point2 points ago

[–]ganjcity 4 points5 points ago

I would say real life matters WAY more than video games, despite what you're trying to say. But to each their own, I suppose.

[–]teganandsararock 0 points1 point ago

the meaning of life is what you make of it etc.

[–]PrimeIntellect 0 points1 point ago

That is the worst advice I've ever seen, definitely from someone with a cushy life and no responsibility

[–]bo87 26 points27 points ago

“Just think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are even stupider!”

-George Carlin

[–]Stoe 1 point2 points ago

what about the really smart people?

[–]privatehuff 4 points5 points ago

ALSO STUPID

[–]tennantsmith 0 points1 point ago

That's not how averages work.

[–]Fine_Structure 0 points1 point ago

Only if you're using the median.

We are taking videogames way too fucking seriously lately.

[–]Muricadaphat 41 points42 points ago

The virginity is strong with this one.

[–]theycallmestew 108 points109 points ago

Dear god this is the gayest fucking post I've seen on Reddit yet. This is worse than some things on 9gag.

[–]dan2737 19 points20 points ago

It's from 9gag. OP is a fucking faggot.

[–]cdr1598 72 points73 points ago

[–]ruderabbit 11 points12 points ago

I have no idea why this image makes me laugh as much as it does ...

[–]cdr1598 2 points3 points ago

I have to say, it's the same for me. I posted that, then chuckled for a good 30 seconds.

[–]ruderabbit 6 points7 points ago

We should start some kind of club or something.

[–]Givants 0 points1 point ago

"Super fag and friends"

[–]AlexthePwner 6 points7 points ago

[–]JonnyCrush 6 points7 points ago

Well... there is no need for homophobic slurs. Be better.

[–]fucking_faggot 9 points10 points ago

I agree, it's just childish.

[–]Omniduro 0 points1 point ago

Right thread, right time. :)

[–]trilobitemk7 -3 points-2 points ago

Consider this, what is worse, if it's homophobic slurs or 4chan slang?

[–]EightOh 0 points1 point ago

Oh stewity

[–]BarrelRoll3 -2 points-1 points ago

I didn't know that virtual submissions to a database could have emotions or sexual orientations, no less.

[–]Kolatorul 40 points41 points ago

[–]rabidassbaboon -5 points-4 points ago

Beat me to it.

[–]dan2737 11 points12 points ago

This is so pathetic it makes me want to crush my ball with a nutcracker and die in agony.

[–]Haz_ 5 points6 points ago

The COD to good game ratio is a bit off

[–]LgnTss 2 points3 points ago

In before some gaming magazine puts this on their facebook page.

[–]hieagie 21 points22 points ago

Copying from a 9gag frontpage post... Come on, we are better than that.

http://9gag.com/gag/4517138

[–]LawbringerSteam 42 points43 points ago

This was on Reddit months ago, just sayin.

[–]The_Director 21 points22 points ago

Yep, original was made by a Redditor. Text is just some sad thing.

[–]CinLordOfGwynders 2 points3 points ago

Wrong. I saw it on /v/ a week before it was ever on reddit.

[–]qwertywtf 5 points6 points ago

If you're better than that, how come you knew it was on 9gag?

[–]Pybro5ever 1 point2 points ago

"Know your enemy," or something.

[–]hieagie 1 point2 points ago

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

[–]jsusewitz 1 point2 points ago

I know it cos I was seeing how much on their top page was from reddit. That sounds like a decent excuse, ill go with that.

[–]eithris 1 point2 points ago

he should be playing angrybirds on his smartphone while descending

[–]eljacko 0 points1 point ago

Real life is pretty goddamn shallow.

[–]ravkal 4 points5 points ago

[–]Don_Andy 1 point2 points ago

What if the real life is actually one of them?

[–]ravkal 1 point2 points ago

Look into consciousness as a scientific topic, report to me your findings.

[–]Lunatic721 1 point2 points ago

The use of rhetoric in this is terrible.

[–]Hector_Kur 1 point2 points ago

"I've also chosen to have a very tiny head."

[–]MrWendal 1 point2 points ago

I'm a gamer because .... I have thousands of deaths

[–]pttguy 1 point2 points ago

I don't like the line you chose to put on this, but I like the idea of the picture itself.

[–]br00tman 1 point2 points ago

Very nice.

[–]branran 1 point2 points ago

I found the picture to be amazing. As for the words not so much

[–]Garroch 3 points4 points ago

Seems like a ripoff of a quote somewhere I read about reading.

[–]sniperdogruffo 5 points6 points ago

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies," said Jojen. "The man who never reads lives only one.”

― George R.R. Martin, A Dance With Dragons

[–]Garroch 1 point2 points ago

Knew someone smarter than me would remember it ;)

[–]classicaliberal 2 points3 points ago

Now I just feel bad that this is what's being used to justify my habit.

[–]SakeBomberman 1 point2 points ago

I have many lives... FALSE, you have 1 life, and its pathetically depressing

[–]BonBonSon 1 point2 points ago

Yea, video games are fun and good, but you should always be careful of how much time you spend on them and hoxw addicted you are.

[–]JiiZZi 3 points4 points ago

If anyone's curious the games are:

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • Skyrim
  • Battlefield 3
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  • Dark Souls

and a triforce in the middle?

[–]skawtiep 6 points7 points ago

The original image was meant to show case all the games that came out last fall, hence the the triforce in the middle for Skyward Sword.

[–]stryder3323 0 points1 point ago

Assassin's Creed: Revelations, to be a tad more specific.

[–]Mitiger 1 point2 points ago

how in the world does a cool video game pic mashup become a talk about life?

[–]Plyson 1 point2 points ago

The triforce is just terrible it doesnt fit in with any of the images used

[–]nightzirk 1 point2 points ago

That is pathetic.

[–]danman11 2 points3 points ago

Lame.

[–]HornyPoney 1 point2 points ago

I don't know why, but i'm ashamed of these comments. You guys are like the 9gag community.

[–]SpookyMcGee 0 points1 point ago

Looks like his feet are backwards

WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME WHILE WALKING AWAY?

[–]GAMEZW1ZARD 0 points1 point ago

the feet/ legs are backwards XD

[–]WelcomeToJazzClub 0 points1 point ago

Baka++

[–]Highwind4 0 points1 point ago

This is the sort of stuff that the bullies relish.

[–]melodeath31 0 points1 point ago

this just illustrates the blandness of video game cover art

[–]xelested 0 points1 point ago

"I don't have a life. I have many lives."

How does this shit get to the front page? Summer truly has arrived.

[–]KeithO 0 points1 point ago

Games are written by other people as entertainment. They are not "many" lives but escapism. Like movies and alcohol.

[–]ObliviousUltralisk 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that supposed to be a quote about books?

[–]pretzelguy1 0 points1 point ago

He wants be be a strangely dressed, barbarian assassin who has spaghetti sauce on his left shoulder.

[–]monty6447 0 points1 point ago

What Assassins Creed image is that?

[–]GAMEZW1ZARD 0 points1 point ago

Revelations

[–]JakeMeNow 0 points1 point ago

You're a brave man for including Mw3 in there.

[–]Rofltofflan 0 points1 point ago

would love to see this pic in 1920x1080

[–]saxxybeast 0 points1 point ago

I'm surprised that this is the first time I'm seeing this again since last fall

[–]DoctorPimpslap 0 points1 point ago

How does he get his knees to bend like that?

[–]gokuman4594 0 points1 point ago

So cheesy.

[–]SmurfRockRune 0 points1 point ago

FYI, his legs are backwards.

[–]trustedsource 0 points1 point ago

As much as I love disparaging all the stupid gamer pride macros on this sub, this one seems kind of accurate to the social phenomenon of video games.

[–]Kiplol 0 points1 point ago

I expect to see this posted on Facebook by IGN later today.

[–]Ridid 0 points1 point ago

I think the real test is if you can name all the parts of the picture.... I can

[–]Shkchp31 0 points1 point ago

Can someone link the original picture for this without the. Captions?

[–]mrwalrusface 0 points1 point ago

Dark souls man, dark souls. And you should play it, my favorite game all time.

[–]Cendeu 0 points1 point ago

Whatever others are saying, I don't think this is lame.

[–]triforce721 0 points1 point ago

...and all of those lives involve chronic masturbation

[–]onicV 0 points1 point ago

How'd the picture manage to get so many upvotes, but all the upvoted comments are people hating it?

[–]Matrix117 0 points1 point ago

The amount of self-esteem in this thread microscopic. What is with this "life" thing people need to get.

[–]onicV 1 point2 points ago

To be fair it's a pretty cool picture without the captions

[–]GAMEZW1ZARD 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only person who felt proud after I looked at this picture? I could identify every game that this poster was comprised of, and I'm PROUD of that. I don't understand all these posts of disappointment and sadness. We. Are. Gamers. There's nothing wrong with that....

[–]jhonka_ -1 points0 points ago

Nope.. not the only one.. so much hate here. I guess these people can't enjoy reading national geographic. Cause youre not "living it". Or an engaging movie. Let's all bash people who spend their free time reading too. What the hell man. The picture is valid.

[–]toadwarrior 0 points1 point ago

I'm sitting in a room with action figures and a pile of games while wearing a ratty old Mortal Kombat shirt and that's really sad if someone made that image with pride in their complete and utter lack of social interaction.

[–]CptnCanuck -3 points-2 points ago

It's also very embarassing that Call of Duty and Battlefield made it on there.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

A popular game....on r/gaming? BY GOD YOU'RE RIGHT!

[–]PossiblyTheDoctor -1 points0 points ago

Well you're a very sad person then. I'm a gamer because of what games can do with my emotions. They can give me an incredible high just to throw me on my face a moment later, only to pick me back up again. Games can tell epic stories of love and betrayal in a way no other medium can, because I experience it, and I'm lucky to be around at a time when they are starting to grow into something much more meaningful than before.

[–]tuscanspeed 2 points3 points ago

Is he really a sad person then?

Since you appear to back up his point so awfully well it appears you agree.

[–]PossiblyTheDoctor 0 points1 point ago

I agree that games are great, for very different reasons. If I didn't think games were good, I wouldn't be on this subreddit.

[–]tuscanspeed 0 points1 point ago

Well, to be fair though, life itself is nothing but emotional triggers and experience doing things.

If I can have these things virtually, it may not be "as good" as a real life experience of the very same thing (think Madden football vs real football), then I'd be hard pressed to call someone "sad" if they value such things.

[–]PossiblyTheDoctor 0 points1 point ago

I distinguish between real life and games rather than replacing my life with games, the same as any other reasonable person with any medium.

[–]tuscanspeed 0 points1 point ago

I prefer the term "augment", but yes. However, I didn't interpret OP's post as saying anything different.

Do you tell the same to a football player about the game he plays?

[–]stitchy1503 -1 points0 points ago

The hive mind is strong with these comments.

[–]ChuckFiinley -2 points-1 points ago

Actually I don't have a life too. But games make me feel like I have something.

[–]CertusAT -5 points-4 points ago

Not true for me.

I got a live, i got a place that i pay rent for, i got a place where i work a job i like with co-workers i respect (most of the time). A GF i love, i just choose Gaming as my hobby because it gives me the post pleasure with the least amount of trouble.

Gaming is my hobby and i don't see why we need to have posts like this in a gaming subreddit, isn't this just essentially patting our self's on the should "Yes, we have good reasons we are better than them!", how pathetic.

I game, because i like it and that is it.

[–]Grease2310 4 points5 points ago

You may consider taking some English language night courses instead of playing games actually... That hurt my head to read.

How did a picture with COD involved get so many up votes?

[–]DMthePerson -1 points0 points ago

Ironic since most of the games in this picture are ones that a lot of people do play and not ones you'd associate a "no life gamer" with.

Okay Moonknight.

I think someone is under the false perception that you can vicariously live life through characters in a video game.

Get out and experience actual life, you don't have to be batman or super hero to live an adventurous life. Just go try a new restaurant and a dish you've never had before or take up a new hobby like skate boarding, something you've never tried before but always wanted to.

Hate to say it, but liver and onions is not living vicariously.

I thought the picture-montage was meant to show how unoriginal the gaming world has gotten?

Why make it a banner of 'gamer pride'?

[–]okelfo -1 points0 points ago

The fact that all of these blend in in a single image like this shows the ridiculously pathetic state mainstream gaming is at. Every.fucking.game. looks the same.

At first I thought the bottom panel was darkwatch.
