There is a real valve there, its just very slim and its yellow like everything else so the camera kind of loses it, making it look extremely stupid (bad set design aside). I saw this explained before, but my GIS-Fu is failing me at the moment. It looks a bit like this but smaller and thinner and with two handles.

You can see the black box retreat. With the box covering his hands, it looks normal. I don't think the black was supposed to move like that. Hollywood shortcuts.

The black isn't moving, rather the frame of reference used to create the gif. The camera in the scene is moving, and in order for the gif to remain centered, it must move horizontally. This makes it appear as if the black itself is moving.
