That's an epic photo, damn nazis and their crazy scientists were really good at warfare R&D

Picture of the same plane after testing

From another angle

According the LOC, the photo was taken in 1940 at the "Hermann Goering" Aviation Research Institute, Braunschweig Source

Thanks for the extra info and pictures. The LOC date is probably the correct date as my dating of the picture is not based on an original source.

I think it's the E variant (Emil) so 1940 makes perfect sense :)

[–]Kornstalx 1 point2 points ago

Yeah that looks like an Emil, those points on the wings are the converged 20mm cannons. The F and later models removed the wing cannons and mounted a single one centerline, through the prop.

[–]fennekeg 0 points1 point ago

yes, 1940 makes more sense than 1934 because of the nazi writing on the wall.

"Because FUCK scale models."

[–]mypantsareonmyhead 11 points12 points ago

It is a scale model, it's just that the Germans had the balls to make theirs 1:1 .

Das deutsche Volk wird sich

durch die Eroberung der Luft*

seinen ihm* gebührenden* Platz

in der* Welt* erzwingen

I'm not sure about the marked words, maybe somebody can sharpen the text. It seems to say

The German nation will enforce the place, it deserves in the world, by conquering the air.

Most (big) industrial factories had writings like that in at least one hall as ordered by the regime, because as an owner you either cooperated or it handed over.

But as crumbleater says, it was taken at the "Hermann Goering" Aviation Research Institute, so it doesn't surprise me much, anyway.

What an incredible picture - can't stop taking in all the awesomeness

Now where exactly do they store the gold Jackie Chan steals 50 years later?

[–]roboduck 10 points11 points ago

There's something odd about one of the most fearsome weapons of the Third Reich that was involved in countless bloody battles and was responsible for untold numbers of deaths having been designed by someone named Willy.

Takes a bit of the sting out of how badass it was, right?
